LOL! So after the initial delerium of 10meg (well hopefully) for only a few minutes, as you use up your quota, before getting STM'ed, most people will then be back on 5meg for the next 5 hours making the upgrade to be, for all intents and practical purposes, only 1meg.

Unless the allowance is upgraded in line with the speed it seems it's all a waste of time and effort and will be just another castrated product from VM. :(

The traffic management can affect you for a maximum of 35 hours per week. That gives you a minimum of 133 hours where traffic management doesn't affect you. If it's all a waste of time, call up and tell them you're happy to stay on 4MB. I'm sure you'll be picking the phone up right after reading this post! ;)

For normal people working, say 8.00 till 6.00, and maybe sitting down at their computer by 7.00pm and then after a few minutes getting STM'ed till midnight, at which time they should be thinking of bed, please explain how your calculation that they have a minimum of 133 hours where traffic management doesn't affect you works. Maybe they don't/can't stay up till all hours, maybe they dont want to leave their machines running all day and night.
What is the point of 10meg when all it good for, at the time when most people need to use it, is browsing and emailing. Geez 512k is good enough for that.

It's not that hard to understand is it? Your straw man argument still doesn't change the fact that everyone has at least 133 hours a week where their connection is unaffected by traffic management. There are plenty of people that work nights, or that work twilight shifts, or that don't work, or that are students, or that can manage how they use their connection to get the best out of it, and so on.

So is this you you're describing? A quick glance at your posting history on this board would suggest otherwise.

It'll be great for me. If I know I'm going to be downloading a file that's likely to get my line traffic shaped, I wait until 9PM to start it going. When the 10MB upgrade hits, assuming I'll get close to the maximum speed, my downloads will finish up to 2½ times faster than they do now. Assuming the traffic shaping doesn't change and the limits don't get raised, I'm still more than happy with the free speed boost, because I'm not one of the "normal people" who has to fit everything into a 7-9PM window.

Unless watching progress bars are your idea of fun, downloading stuff when you are at your pc is a pretty stupid idea, if i want to download stuff I do it when I'm not siting at my pc and then use/watch/listen to it when I am. This way even if I do get traffic managed I probably won't notice.

I dont understand how people say they dont get their full mb internet speed. When i was on virgin 2mb bradband it was allways just over around 2.05mb. On the 4mb which i am on now i get just under 3.95mb. Note my broadband goes through a wireless router my whole family can be on runs up to 5 computers.

Have a look at this thread.

For those of us suffering with contention, on over subscribed servers such as Baguley, not getting our full internet speed is a way of life. In my case getting the 'threatened' stm speeds would actually be an improvement at times.

Talking about the upgrades is there has anyone heard from anyone in Preston??? It seems strange that no-one from Preston has been screaming "I HAVE 10Mb!!!!!!"

Perhaps the upgrades are actually VM terminator squads hunting out all the complainers about the system :erm:  :erm:

Don't upgrade if you want to live (to paraphrase) ;)

Apparently, the limit is to rise from 800MB to 1.5GB and when limited, the speed will drop to 2.5Mbps instead of 1. I don't know what the upload limit will be. These figures come from VM technical support via newsgroups.

Ooh, now that's much better. Isn't it?

Just rang to order my cable modem on the strength of this. I was holding off ;)
Apparently the modem will arrive followed by an engineer to fit it.
Not sure I'm going to need an engineer to be honest, but hey.

Mon, 25 Feb 2008 20:33:12 UTC

Test 1: 1024K took 11957 ms = 85.6 KB/sec, approx 705 Kbps, 0.69 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 6882 ms = 148.8 KB/sec, approx 1226 Kbps, 1.2 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 7910 ms = 129.5 KB/sec, approx 1067 Kbps, 1.04 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 18813 ms = 108.9 KB/sec, approx 897 Kbps, 0.88 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 974 Kbps, 0.95 Mbps

why oh why do they do these upgrades before the system can cope?
and can anyone confirm that the 20meg service is going onto docsis3 or whatever it is
tia
