Hi newbie here, i think the problem is, and the main reason people are getting angry is that NTL CS are not following the same script. If some people are being told December then everyone should be told December. By carrying out the upgrades in a lottery style fashion it is only causing hassle for themselves. :)

I rang customer Services last night about Quarter to Eight, no queue, straight through. Asked if it was possible to be upgraded to 10mb, and he (scottish Bloke) said No Problem, It'll take 2 mins.

He asked if a leaflet had gone out about the Upgrade because alot of people had called in about it.

He said give it 24 hours, and if it hasn't upgraded give us a call back. Modem restarted Straight away, so i restarted PC too, and the upgrade was complete.
I'm only getting about 5Mbps at the moment, and although it's not 10, i'm still quite happy with a free upgrade.

I have a Motorola Surfboard 4100 SACM which should go up to speeds of 36Mbps i think.

Hi & Welcome,

Yes, I think the main problem is they didn't set a date, I'm not talking about a month am talking about a certain date i.e 27th...of whatever! At least that way they could of communicated this out alot easier to CS agents.

I also feel this new 10Mbit speed has not been fully tested on all modem types before being rolled out. As my Ambit modem cannot use the full 10Mbit speed. I have a feeling this will be firmware related, and once again NTL have not taken the full testing phase and rolled it out too quickly before testing it on all modem/firmware types.

The rollout is being done on the fly.If left it will happen over time.3 meg has been enough for people for long enough why cant people just chill out and wait. When the 3 meg upgrade was rolled out in March me thinks I was one of these I want I want I want and I was totally out of order over it.People just chill wait a while and you will be upgraded

was told that 3MB was being upgraded in January and the others towards the end of 2006!! I said I know someone who has the 10MB speed; she said impossible because their modems don't support the new speeds yet... I hung up.. I can wait but I don't want to be lied to!!

Thats some nice ADSL speeds! Will have to keep me up-to-date on that ;) As for your upload yea alot better that was what I wanted more then anything. It just would be nice to have the full 10Mbit. (I have a feeling a replacment modem will be your only choice atm)

If you mess about with the duplex settings on the modem you will most probably find if you change it from "auto sensing" to 100M Full it will perform really really bad (mine did)

I just don't think its capable of coping with the full 10Mbit without the correct firmware.

NTL are so bad at lying. I got upgraded after phoning up about 10 times. In the end it was a woman who got me the upgrade. Also they told me that it was only available to new customers and the existing ones wouldn't be upgraded until the end of November/December/early next year (depending on who I talked to) so I said ok what about if I cancel and then renew. They said you'll have to pay the installation fee. I told them that I had just phoned sales (which I had!) and they had told me that it was free installation this month. NTL have one of the worst CS after 3 mobile!

Im in GU14 Farnborough area and CS upgraded my 3mb without question or fuss.
Not superfast speeds showing yet but fast enough to show that ive been upgraded.
I use adsl for speed checks and i wonder what speed limitations there are with the speed check sites themselves.

The CS did make a point of the 75gb cap but im not too concerned about that issue anyway.

Use this people - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...speedtest.html

It will be the most best one to use atm as its hosted directly on NTL's webservers :)

Again only showing 5-6Mbit here as my modem can't handle it

1st 128K took 218 ms = 601248 Bytes/sec = approx 5002 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 266 ms = 492752 Bytes/sec = approx 4100 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 250 ms = 524288 Bytes/sec = approx 4362 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 266 ms = 492752 Bytes/sec = approx 4100 kbits/sec

Have you stopped to think that each area is different? Some areas may still need additional work doing before they release 10 Mb in them. If that work is not being done until December then it is correct to tell customers December. If the work isn't being done until January then customers should be told January. Just because some customers are receiving different information doesn't mean that the information is wrong or that CS are working from different scripts.

Even people in the same area could receive differing information from each other when they call. This could be because of the equipment the customer has installed or because of several other factors which only become apparant to the CS agent when they try to do the upgrade.

Many customers are posting that they can only get a fraction of the 10 Mb when they upgrade. This can be caused by many factors including the setup of their computer, router and CM. A more likely cause though is that there are a lot of people doing speed tests which can max out the speed test site and if more than four of them are on the same UBR card can be maxing out that card.

I can visualise areas where several customers on the same UBR card are doing speed test after speed test and trying to max out their connection by downloading from newsgroups or similar. If this is the case then none of them will get anywhere near the max. Just think what would happen if every single customer had been upgraded to 10 Mb at the same time. What speeds do you think they would get if they all tried to max out their connection?

Everybody is getting irate and angry at NTL for giving us the possibility of having the fastest internet connection any UK supplier offers to the masses; and their arguments are based on rumours that NTL didnt even start themselves.

Next time a bloke in a pub tells you something dont listen - then you wont be bitterly dissapointed when it does not arrive when 'he' said it would.

Did you call customer services and ask them if you can get the upgrade?

A) NO I payed 37.99 for there best service they can offer. And still paying £37.99 is just not on, I'm paying premium rates for a service that I'm not getting.

B) I wouldnt put this forum in the same category as a pub, As its not heresay people Are getting a better service and paying the same as me.

C) I've called CS and Tech support yesterday and Today, The answer was the same on both counts, Sorry sir its not available, until end of december, I put my point across on both occasions regarding those that already have the service, there answer was that "this is merely a TRIAL period. And not the proper rollout".

No wonder people are getting Upset. about this.

OK. Now I am starting to get annoyed.

Yesterday evening I was told that I would be upgraded - could take upto 24 hours. Called just now to check that this would be done, and have been told that it is not available, and the notes on my account are that I made an enquiry, not that I am to be upgraded.

Well, after all my calls yesterday to CS I phoned again to see where my upgrade was, one operator said 'You are still on 2 meg and can only go to 3' the next operator said 'you are already on 10, phone tech support'

I called tech support and they said I wasnt upgraded, speak to CS, I told them CS told me to speak to them, they went away, 2 mins later my modem reset itself and now i'm getting 8869.6 Kbps.

I'm in Warrington.

I'm on the Ambit 120 using USB, and getting 2.7mb. But i'm not sure if it's the modem or my area causing the problems. It seems strange, as i used to get 3mb fine before the upgrade.

I suppose i should buy an ethernet cable, anyone know what cable i need? I've never used ethernet before. I have the following set up:

†¢ nVIDIA® nForce3 NV Gigabit LAN controller
- Integrated Fast Ethernet MAC and PHY in one chip.
- Supports 10Mb/s, 100Mb/s and 1000Mb/s auto-negotiation operation.
- Compliant with PCI v2.2.
- Supports ACPI Power Management.

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

I'm confused about this whole situation, the reason i say this is simple, downloading a game clip (40-50mb) however the site i download from usually only get about 175kbps - 200kbps, now last night downlkoaded from the same server but was getting 200 - 250kbps, again not just 3 mins ago i downloaded another game clip at roughly the same size but i seem to be hitting over 700 kbps, i just did a test but the test says i'm still getting 3mb......

What gives (i love it)

you'll need a ethernet patch cable (as opposed to cross-ver) with an rj45 connector (don't worry they only come with one connector, so you won't get the wrong one). Then plug one end into the modem, the other into the pc (a light should come on next to the port in the back of the pc). You may have to set your net settings to automatically detect settings for it to work, or it might just work right off the bat.

Good luck.

Being impatient doesnt make NTL CS ops give differing stories.

Being impatient doesn't make NTL incapable of rolling out products with effective communication strategies.....

NTL being crap does that.

Hi there, I have it on very good authority that this is the case, you can not get 10 meg through a settop box, it has to be a stand alone modem.

Being impatient is when the service is not available in my area.

What really rocks me off is that my next door neighbour is on 10mb and I cannot get it becasue Im on 3mb and he upgraded from 2mb,

So the 2mb users have prefence over the 3mb users, which cant be right!

NTL being crap does that.

I'm rapidly losing the will to live reading this thread.

What is wrong with people who are getting a whacking great big increase in speed (for free) but might have to wait for a little bit longer to get it.

Just because you aren't immediately getting the service is no excuse for toys to be thrown out of the pram. And some of the comments on this thread have been pretty disgraceful.

It is entirely possible that Ntl CSR's have the ability to upgrade customers and have been told not to until full rebalancing has taken effect. Have any of the whingers thought of that?
Would you like to be on a 10Meg config file that does nothing as the local network is congested badly?

Personally I can't believe how many of the "Ntl are rubbish", "I knew they would screw up" crowd this has brought out the woodwork.

How are we to know when we have downloaded 10 linux DVD isos worth in a month.

It's likely not to be out until January the monitoring software. That doesn't mean people will be able to abuse the service for a month though, people going way over will no doubt be brought down.

People want the lastest and greatest mate :) NTL should be more then aware of this and should accomadate such things. As you say its happend once before so they should of lernt from the mistakes they made last time. Which it seems they have not.

Again it comes down to one thing - communication and the CS agents have not been given any!

Greetings All.

Live in the Reading area. Have 3 MBit connection with a standalone modem (silver).

Phoned up CS half an hour ago and asked for upgrade. Was told it could not be done, it was not on their system etc etc. They were very friendly and helpful ... but said they could not help. I said I knew that people in my area had been upgraded and asked if they could dig deeper. Eventually the CS rep told me to wait while he read his emails.....

....
....

And then ''arrrrhh I see - yes I can do this for you". He stated that this was new info via email and many simply do not have time to read through their emails before starting their shift.

So - was upgraded on the spot. He also mentioned they would be trying 20Mbits by summer 2006??

Problem - my modem has been updated (I have checked config) - but no change in upload or download speeds using various checks. So I guess I will wait a while and see if things improve??

cheers

MArk

Again a date should of been set (once again NTL not providing a date has caused this)

It's not the customers fault if they want the best speed for there money. And people who browse forums are going to be the first thats for sure and the "hardcore" gamers who browse this site as well.

NTL could of known this and planned for it. which they did not. They never communicate the right way and when they do its in small amounts of information so the CS agents get a half story of whats going on.

The increased bandwidth from 3 to 10 meg is not going to make a difference any hardcore gamer should know that. The only benefit you may get is if you personally run a server the upload may help

Does their fantastic communication plan include changing the upgrade link to say 10 meg - without advising their CS staff that they've done it?

And THAT has nothing to do with US lot.

If you're going to make patently stupid posts on here - at least make some effort to think your point through.

I'm locking this one down temporarily because I've had complaints about flaming, trolling etc.

I'll reopen this, but I'm going to be watching. Don't blame ntl's frontline staff for not knowing about the upgrades as they only pass on what they're told. No having a dig at anyone else.

And most of all, be patient. You are getting a huge upgrade for no extra cost. This is a big step for ntl and I understand that it cannot be rushed.

Thread reopend. Play nice please. After yesterday's 'incidents' I'm hardly in the mood for messing about

As I've repeatedly said for the last day - this whole 'huge upgrade for free' argument doesn't cut it. As things stand today NTL are not competitive - they HAVE to up their speeds. If they didn't have to they wouldn't do it. They are not doing anyone a favour and it's wrong to imply that this is the case.

I agree its a big step for them - and I agree it can't be rushed - but their communication once again is appalling. They should have learned by now that it's vital they give front line staff the correct information and that hasn't happened.

You can hardly blame people for getting frustrated by this.

Fair enough Russ, but did you read this post http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...&postcount=858

...and that's not the first time in this thread that it's been reported.

Now I have never worked at a call centre, so I don't know what kind of pressures they work at, but to start a shift without reading emails which will affect their response to customers questions is ridiculous.

I hear you - honestly I do. But I have no interest in this upgrade (or indeed, this thread). My only involvement here is to make sure people behave. I don't have an opinion on the upgrade other than when I get it, it'll be nice.

OK I'll give you an example of when I worked on the phones at Ntl (and it was BETTER than most call centres)

You come in for a shift (say 10-6) about 9:45
You log into the systems (5 minutes) and go and get a coffee (5 minutes)
Then you come back to your desk and open up your E-Mails.
On a normal day you can have upwards of 30 E-Mails about various things. If you are a fast reader you can skim through them, if you aren't then sometimes you will get a pre-shift brief but normally you are onto the phones bang on 10 to get calls answered.
About 1/2 way through the shift during a quiet spell you get a team brief to go through the E-Mails and any other announcements with your team.

So either you get everyone in earlier and pay them (not likely) or live with the knowledge that not every announcement will be read before the CSR's start their shift.

You can't expect everyone to know everything before their shift and I'm sure these calls are probably not the biggest call driver into the call centres right now as most people won't know/care about the extra speed.

Hi all,

Just Though i would share my story. Have rang NTL about 5 times since yesterday, finally got aome sense out of them. as Paul M originally said, speak to retentions and tell them you want to cancel if you cant get 10meg , they have agreed to give me the new tier and they are coming to install a cable modem next tuesday (the STB's are NOT being supported for 10meg) The new tier will then be added to my config file.

Hope everyone else has the same luck as me

I have worked in a call centre, and believe me, at times like this, when the call queues are ridiculous, you dont get half a minute to look at anything. Call centre's have targets to meet as do all the agents taking the calls. It's not much fun either when people get arsy with you over something that you have been told is not available yet.

But as for putting down the agents on NTL CS on this forum, it's not really a good thing considering a lot of them read it and give up their free time on here to help people.

A chill pill should be taken by a lot of people around here.

Callcenters can be very busy at times. (posting during a quiet spell right now :))

Just be polite, advise them you have info that suggests they CAN upgrade, and be patient while they check.

If you start the call by being short tempered or moody, the agent is not likely to want to help you as much as if you were polite to them.

You could even drop a hint that he/she may have an Email regarding the upgrade.

No one likes a moody customer

I don't necessarily agree. That all depends on whether this 75GB usage 'cap' remains. If it does, it isn't competitive.

Have been following this thread with interest as am on 2meg at the moment.
It was said in one of the earlier posts, but seems like nobody noticed, that NTL are offering to upgrade your speed with the first month free.
This offer expires on the 31st December.
The offer does not say what speed you can upgrade to but this is available to anybody on either the 1 or 2meg connection.
Have just finished watching channel 120 and this is what they are advertising.
So anybody that has upgraded, to be able to get the 10meg connection when it rolls out, have missed out on a months free surfing.
I will probably wait until Christmas time and then get mine upgraded with the first month free.
For anybody thinking of upgrading their speed I would advise they check out channel 120 first before they ring.

NO, that is incorrect! His computers don't say that, ask him to read his email right to the bottom! 3mb customers can demand to be put on 10mb and CS have to do it. Phone them until you get a decent employee or wait if you want.
