BBC Radio 4 Extra to close on DAB, Sky, Freeview and Virgin (TiVo).

And stay on BBC Sound - only on V6, TV360 and Stream boxes.

My Sources has just told me "Viacom/Paramount are going to revamp Channel 5 within the next 3 years they plan to bring more exclusive dramas, and US content and return the movie at 10pm every night, they also plan to bring more live sport onto the channel 5 channels."

They have Paramount+ now so can't so can't see them bringing back US content ,they also already commissioned 6 UK Dramas for Paramount+

I feel this may happen:

*Merge Channel 5 & 5USA as Ch. 5.
*Merge 5Star & 5Select as 5Star (Women base channel)
*Keep 5Action as now (Men and Sport base channel)
*^Adding Paramount back catalogue.
*^New Shows Premiere on Paramount+ when shown on Paramount own channels later.

^Like Sky are doing just now with SYFY.
^WBD do broadcast Discovery+ shows appeared on Quest sometimes.

Alternatively, they could close 5USA & 5Select. Maybe?

Bit odd isn't it that BBC 3 a youth based channel (where majority of users can use online streaming) has come back to linear tv and bbc 4 which must have an older audience are now pushed to use streaming....

CBBC being axed is a bit sad. Should merge it with CBeebies. Cbeebies till 3pm and then CBBC 3pm till 6pm like the old days on BBC1

That's a good move IMO. The BBC News channel broadcasts far too much (expletive deleted) domestic politics and not nearly enough real-world events.

5USA is the highest rating of their spin-offs so it's the least likely to be one of the first of theirs to close.

CBeebies is significantly higher rating, they'd be reluctant to interrupt the schedule for that audience I'd imagine. I'd suggest they return a CBBC strand to the afternoons on BBC1, or more likely, BBC2. There's a lot of repeats on the latter, which this would reduce, and it would keep a regular broadcast element to CBBC content for those households for who on-demand streaming isn't an option.

Sure. I was really just commenting on Media Boy's suggestion that they merge Channel 5 & 5USA and call it Channel 5!

Re: Changes to Virgin TV (2022)

I honestly can't see Paramount closing any of their '5' branded channels as they are doing well as a portfolio and each of them has a defined audience. ITV have 6 channels and Channel 4 have 6 channels, so Channel 5 won't want to have any fewer than 5.

A very sensible idea angus! Probably so sensible that the BBC won't even think about doing that!

So VM are basically upgrading Mix customers to Fun and simplifying the legacy tiers.

More like upgrading the Mix tier to include the same channels as the Fun tier, otherwise they could have simply migrated Mix customers to Fun. There are still differences to "app" access codes - at a guess just Virgin's own kids on demand content.

That's why I used the word "basically", I didn't know the details and there was no mention of a letter being sent to customers like when M+ TV customers were moved to Fun.

I didn't know Fun gets Virgin's Kids On-Demand content, I've never checked.

---------- Post added at 08:52 ---------- Previous post was at 08:47 ----------

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if it's easier for VM to add services to a tier rather than migrate people to a tier in these types of circumstances i.e. large numbers of customers. That's probably why M+ is still on their systems, despite customers being "moved" onto Fun, they just matched the channels.

Shame if it is. It seemed like the right timing to simplify their legacy tiers too i.e. ages since they last did it. It certainly read that way.

It is a simplification to retire 'Fun' as a specific TV tier.

But it is a little different at the moment to those active package changes where customers get moved to Mixit or Maxit.

They were actually moved onto a different tier, the original M+ (& More) tier code(s) were unchanged with the redundant tier codes still added to new channels as they were added. M+ codes haven't been added to channels recently added to the Mix pack, so a departure from the norm.

The recent changes preserve the "Mix" pack but with "Fun" pack channel parity. I would think the best plan would be to migrate everyone to the Mixit (Player) + personal picks model and retire all of the old codes but that may be some way off.

I wasn't referring to tier codes when I said M+ customers were "moved" to Fun, I was referring to the wording on the letters they sent to us as customers.

I think moving legacy customers to Mixit and Personal Picks would be be a nightmare until numbers are pretty small. Best to wait until the numbers are small from natural customer churn. Writing to large numbers and getting them to understand and then pick Personal Picks, I can't imagine going well, either from a customer relations point of view, or administration-wise.

I wasn't really focussing on the tier codes either, just stating what had happened to them with each change. I think Ben summed up the current changes quite well as a "simplification". There is now channel parity, so a future migration to "Fun" wouldn't be too difficult. In the meantime, there is a marketing opportunity for customer services to inform customers of the extra channels and to offer them an update to a current package with even more channels. Virgin have already been seen to be rolling over legacy Full House customers to Maxit + Kids.

Probably better to offer them a newer package now and get as many customers onto the current packs ASAP. Depending on how the change is "sold" it may even reduce churn. Prices could be held at the current level with any increase built into the annual price increase. It doesn't make sense to hang onto legacy packages when Virgin are moving into new areas such as IPTV, with entirely new subscription tiers. "Mix" users determined to keep their existing bundle can be rolled over to "Fun" with channel parity, kicking the migration of "Fun" down the road. As I said, retiring all of the old codes may still be some way off.

I posted the current differences between Mix and Fun on DS Forum, if anyone wants to follow Media Boy's earlier link to that thread.

As far my Sources know - Virgin Media UK has still to start talks with Warner Bros Discovery after a merger over a new deal.

So Virgin has to pay out two times per month to Warner Bros Discovery as far as I know.

I am pretty sure the agreements currently in place will be honoured until they are complete, although they are part of the same group they will be different companies in their own right.

Maybe further down the line things will change

If 'Mix' has been given the same channel line up as 'Fun', then it'll be the other way around. Current 'Fun' customers will end up moved to a bundle including 'Mix' without losing any channels.

Looking at what is in the Mix/Fun line up, there is no easy way to move those customers to Mixit + Personal Picks, unlike Full House which easily went to Maxit + Kids.

No easy way to migrate them other than upselling to Maxit. Which is why I suggested that the extra channels now available to "Mix" customers is (or could be used as) a marketing opportunity to offer them even more channels. Although the channel lineups of Mix and Fun are now the same there still some differences to the "on demand" content subscription codes.

Due to today news that BoxHits will close and E4 Extra set to launch plus 4Music to close on Freeview on June 29th. Here is Channel 4's Monthly Reach numbers for May 2022.

Channel 4 > 39,311
E4 > 19,154
Film4 > 14,767
More4 > 13,718
4seven > 9,797
4Music > 6,196
Magic TV > 1,442
Box Hits > 1,136
Kerrang > 912
Kiss TV > 725
The Box > 759
Kiss TV > 725

With The Box having a same idea of things it broadcast on 4Music if I was working for Channel 4 I would also axe The Box to launch E4 Extra +1.

I think it is more for the benefit of the Freeview audience who will loose 4music in favour of the new service.

If they had said it will replace Box Hits it ain’t on Freeview so I can see how they have announced it this way.

It's about broadcast space and channel number prominence. 4Music is more widely available and in more prominent EPG channel numbers on the various TV platforms than Box Hits, and they deem the new E4 Extra of more importance than 4Music, so are passing on those benefits to the new channel.

4Music hasn't really been 4Music for a long time. What with the lack of music broadcast and all. So this isn't a case of staying the same, it's restoring it to what it used to be.

Wasn't expecting Forces TV to close entirely, just on Freeview, but that's certainly how it reads.

I bet this has to do with Paramount+'s imminent launch. No doubt they'll want to use the CBS brand and free up some shows for Paramount+.

But here in UK Paramount only own 50% of CBS brand and Horror Channel.

AMC own the other 50%.

Based on Digiguide,

It look like Horror Channel will be on Virgin Channel 192 from 30th June, with Horror Xtra broadcasting on Virgin Channel 148.

You can access the UK service by downloading the international (non US) app , although It occasionally comes up with error messages

There is no CBS branding, not even a CBS logo on the small amount of Paramount owned CBS shows that are available on it.

On the back of yesterday's news at Forces TV UK is set to close on June 30th I have been thinking that Talking Pictures may make a bid for Forces TV in a coming days to keep Forces TV on Sky, Freesat and Virgin with a later rebrand to Talking Entertainment that would keep Talking Pictures to broadcast Movies 24/7.

Not convinced their finances are up to buying anything, they barely managed to stay on Freeview during the first year of Covid because many of their advertisers were for things greatly affected, like cruise holidays. It was pretty widely reported at the time, as I recall.

They won't, if they wanted to include shows they would just simply change talking pictures name, they don't have the finances to run another channel.

They wouldn't even have to do that, they already show Shows these days, though heavily outnumbered by films.

If a shop that sat nearby another one that suddenly announced it was closing the one that was staying open would unlikely be able to just buy them out.

However they might start stocking some things that they didn’t use to, however Talking Pictures remit is of programmes a lot older than what ForcesTV was showing some of which I am sure are now public domain with no cost to them whereas buying something like Quantum Leap or the like would eat up their budget very very quickly.

Talking Pictures have found their niche and it works for them.

More info about the schedule changes

Quote:

30th CBS Drama renames to RealityXtra (but keeps the same schedule of reality/drama that it shows now)
30th CBS Justice closes and is replaced by Legend (which is essentially the current Horror Channel moving the the entertainment section)
30th Horror Channel is replaced by HorrorXtra (which is just films from 5pm-5am)

Hmm.

That can't quite be right, they wouldn't have a HorrorXtra without Horror surely?

CBS Reality > Reality
CBS Drama > RealityXtra
Horror Channel > HorrorXtra
CBS Justice > Legend

While it doesn't make much sense it's possibly correct.

Digiguide itself says 'Legend Lowdown' on CBS Justice and horror channel says 'This is Horror Xtra' from 30th

EXCLUSIVE: Virgin Media UK News.

My sources has confirm a following is set to happen on Virgin:

LaLigaTV - Channel 554 will be removed from VM's Premier Sports add-on from July 1st. La Liga games will still be shown on Premier Sports 1 HD (551) and Premier Sports 2 HD (552).

Changes to CBS channels on the 30th June:
149. Horror Channel is being replaced by Legend.
192. CBS Justice will become HorrorXtra,
197. CBS Drama will be replaced by RealityXtra.
202. Horror Ch +1 will become HorrorXtra +1.

Changes to some UKTV channels on the 30th June:
125. W (SD) to close on Virgin.
126. Alibi (SD) to close on Virgin.
127. Dave (SD) to close on Virgin.
211. W HD to move to Virgin Channel 125
212. Alibi HD to move to Virgin Channel 126
227. Dave HD to move to Virgin Channel 127
245. Eden (SD) to close on Virgin.

Seems to be very last minute as they are still advertising the La Liga channel on their website - bearing in mind not long ago it was coming off prime channels as well, which has since been changed due to the new agreement between Premier Sports and La Liga.

You could have simplified this by just sayin the SD Versions of these channels will be replaced with their HD version.

Bearing in mind those on 360 only have one version at the main number depending on their subs.

Another possibility the channels are no longer a joint venture with AMC Networks , perhaps they now solely run by AMC Networks or someone else.

When Sony sold their channels ,the Sony brand was removed , and Virgin 1 became Channel One after Sky bought VMTV

As I recall, all these channels were formerly owned by Chello previously and branded as Zone e.g. CBS Drama was Zone Romantica. So it won't be the first time.

Yep, that sounds right to me and probably suits both parties anyway.

Paramount have their Ch5 branded channels, so don't need any others and on the streaming front, the new Paramount+ is about to launch and Pluto is going strong too.

I wouldn't be too surprised if Paramount buy AMC at some point as Lionsgate who currently own it, are looking to offload it.

As odd as Horror Channel showing Star Trek and the like, which is presumably why Legend came about, to show a sci-fi/horror/fantasy mix like HC did.

Yeah I totally get rebranding Horror, and Legend is quite a good name.

Legend and LegendXtra sitting alongside Reality and RealityXtra would have kept things nicely focused on two core brands.

Surprised the International app isn't even on LG TV's - you would have to use Prime Video or Apple TV app on LG TV's to access Paramount+ as a 'channel'

Unfortunately, that doesn’t allow you to bookmark any content on the box, so it’s no better than you get on a smart TV.

Still waiting for Disney +, let alone Apple +, Discovery +, Acorn, etc. What is the big problem? Virgin need to do better than this if it’s not to lag even further behind Sky.

You can't even bookmark content from streaming services as you describe on Sky Q.

That's a pretty poor solution, as it's only suitable for Prime subscribers. It's of no use to anyone that just wants Paramount+.

For someone who proclaims the app world is the way to go it does baffle me why you still have Virgin TV.

I do get that, but until the standalone app appears, it's at least possible for those that do - although until they sort out the UHD support for the UK I won't be getting it via any route.

I still have it mainly for my wife, who has an aversion to accessing streamers by herself. She can access programmes from Amazon and StarzPlay because I can bookmark these programmes through the 360 box that I have.

I think we are now at a stage where all the content I personally would want to access is now on the streamers. But I really would like to have a box with all the streamers that allowed you to compile one central watchlist for all of them. My wife could certainly cope with that.

Nothing on the market at the moment, sadly, but the day will come eventually.

This article, if correct, suggests that the 'new' channel E4 Extra will be on Virgin Media 337, in the music section...

https://rxtvinfo.com/2022/first-look...ras-launch-day

It's actually a rebrand of the current 4Music, with a new version of 4Music launching on Virgin Media 336, which is itself a rebrand of Box Hits.

Come on VM, use some common sense and put E4 Extra in the Entertainment section like it will be on Sky.

Yes it's actually a rebrand of 4 Music , the listings confirm this.

RXTV did report yesterday (On that link you posted) that Virgin are keeping E4 Xtra in the Music section down to E4 Xtra broadcast Music from 7am to 9am.

Confusingly, RX:TV is now saying that CBS Reality won't drop CBS from it's name...

https://rxtvinfo.com/2022/cbs-channe...mp-end-of-june

It says that the lineup will now be:

Legend
Horror Xtra
CBS Reality
Reality Xtra

Unless that's not actually correct, it's a complete mess!
