HISTORY HD is on 270
HISTORY +1 is on 271
HISTORY 2 HD is on 273

209, 223, 274 and 299 are showing 'Channel Moved'.
221, 225, 272 and 275 are blank.

The pop up I saw clearly said Crime was moving to 209 on 15th and Crime +1 to 222 on 15th. Today is 14th

Presumably 209 needed to be left with the Lifetime message for a day

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2019)

SonicMaster 221,225,272 and 275 have been unused for ages.

I get the impression VM are leaving existing EPG gaps, and those vacated through these HD swaps/replacements, empty with the aim of making the EPG more logical in a larger scale, all at once, change later on. It's easier to do with gaps.

For example, there's a number of cascading changes that could happen just by Channel 4 finishing its switch to HD on 104 (it's currently just swapped in London). If that happened 141 would be empty, combined with 144 which is already empty, and all the C4 channels in the 140s could be shunted along leaving enough space for More4 HD and More4+1 at 146 and 147. All a cascade effect from one change and an existing empty slot.

Ah, you didn't mention the 15th in your original post. So a reshuffle today and then another tomorrow? That will confuse viewers!

Yes, I'm aware.

Hopefully a wider scale tidy up is coming, as the EPG is getting into a mess.

Channel 221 was rumoured to be set for Paramount Network before being given Channel 187.

Channel 225 was Lifetime +1

Channel 272 was Crime before being moved to Channel 223.

Channel 275 was Crime HD before being moved to Channel 222.

Not that I've heard, but there's a some BT-related developments (with 4K) I posted on the sport thread today. For all I know it's some rearrangement of existing services, but the wording they used is odd if that's all it is.

The other cascade effect is with streaming services.

I know this is not the streaming/linear channels threads, but streaming services will impact channels from here on out, especially if the media companies keep their own content on their own services, they could do the same for what linear channels remains, heavily impacting them.

Thanks for the info about Ch4. Now got the HD version on ch104 and ch141 is now vacant. Also noticed that BBC Four is HD on ch107, when did that happen? Ch 163 is now vacant, as the SD channel has gone.

It's what Sky have very firmly hinted at. That's all we have to go on, apart from the fact that the BT deal provides those customers with Sy Atlantic.

An announcement must be imminent, I would have thought. Brace yourselves and take a sharp intake of breath!

Within the next few weeks, you will come to understand that things can change. You can quote me on that.

Five months in and near on half of my predictions for the year have almost come to pass.

Starzplay
Prime
Sky Sports Racing

Suck it up!

By the way, I acknowledge that my hopes for AMC were incorrect. I guess you can't win 'em all!

Media Boy VIEWS:

But we feel Virgin Media UK may drop all Sky SD channels (if they also have an HD Channel).

We also feel UKTV and Discovery channels will be moving to new channels numbers this summer.

We also think Disney will axe FOX brand in UK and rebrand FOX as ABC.

I too could see the Sky SD channels being dropped. I can also see the remaining +1’s and Sky News Arabia coming over the summer.

Reasonable chance. Sky will be wanting to do this themselves at some point and won't want to keep them going just to supply a 3rd party.

The UKTV channels that Discovery got in the BBC deal might move I suppose. I don't see the BBC owned ones doing it too exceptnas part of VM-wide EPG reshuffle.

The ABC brand doesn't mean much over here. I suspect I'm in the minority for remembering and watching ABC1 many years ago. There's bound to be a more recognisable Disney-owned brand that would work if they wanted/needed to change. I'm thinking along the lines of Hallmark becoming Universal and C5 using Paramount brand. Touchstone maybe?

You can end up damaging a channel if you change too often though. Viewers don't like it and/or get confused and/or annoyed.

I have read on the web over the last few months that BBC have given Dave EPG on Freeview to Discovery as part of the deal to break up UKTV.

But UKTV cant sell they EPG slots for Virgin Media UK but they can always ask for move.

I've seen that too, they've all mentioned Quest in that context. The thing about Quest is, which I only recently noticed, their adverts for their shows only mention their HD channel number on Freeview, and only their HD number on VM too. And given the HD swaps happen automatically on Sky and Freesat, their adverts basically only mention HD EPG numbers.

Wanting a better number whilst not promoting current lowest one on two platforms is a little weird.

That’s one thought process, but how many people would realistically joined Virgin instead of Sky to sit and binge watch eight series (or seven plus the eighth weekly) in the last few months? A handful?

As part of the new deal, we may also get Sky's UHD programming as part of any deal.

Media Boy HQ has put this post down as "Rumour" until we see reports of any new Sky branded channel testing on Virgin Media UK.

It'll be interesting to see how Comcast and VM get on.

For those who like trivia, Comcast incorporates what was John Malone's cable co, TCI, which he originally sold to AT&T before Comcast took it on. Comcast and Malone have a good working relationship up to now, so lets see if that continues!:)

We also think Disney will axe FOX brand in UK and rebrand FOX as ABC.

As I'm sure you're aware, the breakup of UKTV is imminent now (weeks, rather than months) so Discovery gets control of Home, Really and Good Food while the Beeb gets the rest, so I agree that changes with those channels seem likely.

I agree about your view on FOX and to add one of my own, I think we'll get all the major US networks soon. They'll already here, just under different names at the moment:

Sky One -> NBC
Ch5 -> CBS
FOX -> ABC

So, how do we reckon the EPG will look over the coming months once the changes have all happened?

It looks like all the SD channels will get dropped if there is a HD equivalent with a +1 channel right next to the main HD channel and the 200s section is being reorganised back into a proper lifestyle and factual section again, or is it? VM placing their ultra HD ch on 205 seems to mess things up somewhat.

We feel with Virgin Media Ultra HD being added to Channel 205 under a Entertainment section.

Virgin Media may start to broadcast Ultra HD other things like Movies and Live Sports on Channel 999.

I have be given tonight an DNP order.

Den, I've said quite a few times now that there will come a time when I expect to ditch those packages. I've considered this quite carefully recently. As you may remember, I currently have VM, Now TV, Netflix and Prime.

My wife is not happy using the different streaming services, going from one HDMI to another and accessing different watchlists. I also find it a bit of a pain, but I do like to have everything together under one watch list.

Another problem with using Now TV, apart from the lower picture quality, is the lack of subtitles, which we find handy with some programmes where the sound quality isn't that good.

The advantage of staying on Virgin's Full House package is that everything comes together. You can bookmark everything from Netflix, Starzplay and on demand, and shortly we will also get that ability for Prime as well. When Sky Atlantic finally arrives, I will ditch Now TV and get all the Sky stuff from Virgin.

I do have an issue with paying for all the junk on the pay tv channels just to watch a few programmes from that source, but if I did ditch that, I would lose other services from VM, such as the UHD channel and all the other UHD stuff that will be coming our way.

I think it is about time that Virgin introduced a new skinny package without penalty in these areas. I would happily pay for Sky One, Sky Witness, Sky Arts, Universal and Fox, but I don't want the other junk apart from factual channels Discovery, National Geographic, Smithsonian and Love Nature. An important consideration is to get all my services on one box with the best picture and sound quality as cheaply as possible.

Ultimately of course, all the Sky and factual stuff will be transferred to OTT services. If VM carried all of them, I would be a happy bunny..

The table on that link you gave has the Sky Basics in HD only on Full House & up.

Though that table only shows Player+Drama and not any of the other combos between Player and (new)Full House, so it's not super useful.

Could well be. It looks like Sky are expecting a lot of churn or think that Sky Atlantic ratings will nosedive with GoT coming to an end.

Usually, those who cancel Now TV get offers to carry on subscribing, but recently they are now letting customers carry on viewing for nothing:

Yes, and with increasing difficulty in finding new content from the US with the impending SVOD explosion, there's not much prospect of them finding a lot of decent content to fill its schedules.

All the more reason to let VM and other platforms have it then, but I wonder how many will be that bothered now that GoT has finished??

It would still suit me though because I don't like GoT (I must be the only person in the country!) and only watch SA for Westworld.

NBC Universal will just distribute it's shows using Sky removing them from the likes of Netflix and Amazon when that problem arises , I'd imagine they'll also invest the money they are saving on more original content.

Well Sky have long term deal with HBO and, I think, Showtime, for Sky to be the home of all new shows they produce. And Atlantic is where Sky have chosen to put the content from these deals, so there is long term reasons for people to want Atlantic.

And that will include the multiple spin-offs/prequels to GoT that are in development.

I never thought about any GoT spin offs. I suppose it makes sense given how popular it is.

Old Boy conveniently forgets that in his proposed future everyone will have difficulty obtaining content because it’s going to be vertically integrated end to end. I don’t see why Comcast/Sky/NBC Universal are going to find that more challenging that Netflix or Amazon (or anyone to be honest).

I don't think the Sky name will be dropped by Comcast, far from it, but instead and despite Comcast's earlier statements that their streaming service will carry the NBC Universal branding, I think they will use the Sky brand.

Sky as we know it today will morph from a satellite tv service into a IPTV service probably using Comcast's xfinity branding and Sky will be the brand solely used for the global streamer in the end, or something like that.

I don't see in a future world dominated by streaming services, that people will find it difficult to find content, quite the opposite.

At the moment it's completely hit and miss about where to find stuff, but if the media companies keep their own content solely on their own streaming services and that is a if, then it will be easy. If you want Star Wars, Simpsons and Mickey Mouse, I think everyone will quickly learn that they need to head to Disney for that.

Take another example: NCIS. Currently that show and its offspring are littered about the tv schedules and are on several channels all at once each evening. Wouldn't it be easier if it were all on just one service, the CBS/Viacom (or whatever it will be called) streamer?

If we end up in 10-20 years with half a dozen main streamers as the primary method to watch tv, then six places rather than the current mass of hundreds of channels, seems a lot easier to navigate, if it goes that way.

I think Media Boy suggested it could be VM's way of marking the end of the Entertainment section of the EPG after they complete their reorganisation. Seems a reasonable idea. 999 clearly hasn't proved visible enough despite being one push up, and maybe they though it would annoy the other broadcasters if they took a lower number.

The most Eurosport shows on its broadcast channels is obviously limited by only having two channels, whereas their Player service will cover them all. Sadly it's only available via their subscription app and Amazon (AFAIK). I didn't know it was via Red Button last year.

Eurosport 4K (HDR) is now accessible via the red button on Eurosport channels and Virgin UHD (999 & 205)

Not really a tennis fan but just put the tennis on from Eurosport to find they've also made the UHD available on Sky although no HDR owing to the fact the Sky Q box still hasn't received the update for this.

I wonder if Eurosport will start to show more of its Sport in UHD going forward.

Both VM and Sky had it in 4K last year - just no HDR then.

Virgin Media's V6 box is already HDR ready.
