I wonder if this means there will be a Uktv app or section as previously pressing the red button or having to search for shows was such a faff on!

It will take time to set up. Red button currently shows "Press < to go back to live TV."

I see Dave HD and Gold HD are now in the Mix package - does that mean there's no longer a need for Gold SD to be carried on the platform?
It's an interesting development as it could signify a strategy-change away from putting HD channels in Full House. Time will tell.

Another snippet here..

Quote:

UKTV is jointly owned by the BBC, which holds back video on demand rights to its programming as it instead sells them to services such as Netflix, and Virgin Media has also confirmed today (August 11) that discussions are ongoing directly with BBC Studios to explore bringing full BBC boxsets to Virgin TV.

Well VM took a big risk but by getting 5x times the on demand content plus GOLD HD and DAVE HD on Mix I think most people (including me who was seriously cosidering moving elsewhere) that VM have played this well.

It might show other broadcasters that VM are no pushover.

"Cable customers lost five free-to-air channels - Dave, Drama, Really and Yesterday - as well as the paid-for services Gold, Alibi, Eden, Good Food and W.

A Virgin Media spokesman said the paid-for channels, which took longer to restore for "technical reasons", would reappear over the next few days.

The new agreement increases the number of catch-up hours available, with customers on the top-tier Full House plan gaining access to "significantly more" boxsets, the company said.

It also adds access to HD versions of Dave and Gold for customers on the cheaper Virgin Mix plans"

To be fair I did for some time, even after I moved off net, and I only left when they closed their off net ADSL service. If I moved back to a cabled area I’d rejoin in a flash. They’re worth it for the fast internet alone, quite apart from whatever TV they carry.

Good point Den. I assume the on demand/catch up tv stuff arrives on Monday? Haven't watched any of the channels which launched to replace the UKTV stuff. Saw Paramount tv is basically the gilmore girls tv and premier sports and free sports were .... well not particularly good.

Yes, it's interesting that VM now appear to be adding pay HD channels to packs below Full House. AIUI, the HD channels higher up the packs get a share of the subscription money. UKTV appear to have put this secondary to making their HD channels available to more customers.

This is what Sky did when their channels came back for popular series that had already started. I'm not too worried about the eight series that I missed having gaps in them, it's not the sort of programming that has to be watched in chronological order and the V6 should pick up the missed episodes when they are repeated.

I reluctantly accepted this abysmal sum in lieu of the missing UKTV channels. What i'm saying to those who think that the return of these channels should lead to the cancellation of discounts is that I now regard this as a gesture of goodwill for the inconvenience and annoyance caused by the incident and the appalling way that staff handled it.

Seems it all worked out in the end. Glad to see all the parties came to their senses.

Was looking like VM had scored a bit of an own goal and now they come out of it smelling of roses.

Wonder how much these deals to keep customers happy has cost them though?

Like Mr K and others this has worked out pretty well for me personally.

I was on the Full House package with Sky Sports. Upgraded to VIP and saved myself £10 per month. Got a £50 credit to boot. Now got my UKTV channels back.

Just need VM to get Premier Sports incorporated into the VIP bundle and if they can add Sky Atlantic while they're at it..............

UKTV channels have adverts ?

If so I would imagine their advertisers told them to get the viewers back or they would reduce what they pay for advertising.

I find that the staff at Virgin are always courteous when I have cause to contact them. Remember that those on 1st line support will only have briefing notes to rely upon and will not know the whole picture, I do hope that when you refer to "staff" you don't mean these people. In a perfect world the negotiations would have been concluded prior to the expiry of the contract and life would have gone on as normal. Regretfully we live in an imperfect world with UKTV and Virgin going eyeball to eyeball for 3 weeks has resulted in some channels not being available however all my recordings were still available to me to watch so as far I am concerned I have not been inconvenienced and it would have been churlish to demand a reduction in my monthly payment.

Getting £3 a month off seems hardly worth the effort.

Perhaps Richard is flagged on the system?

I had hoped for rather more tbh, but they were playing hardball, and seemed reluctant to even give me that! I did actually ask for £7.99 a month off to pay for the extra subscription to TV Player to get the channels back. I don't regard it as "churlish" for those who asked for a discount, why should they pay the same price for a lesser product?

I posted in this thread about how I was all but called a liar when I said that I would be losing programmes that I was in the middle of recording and how I was falsely told that all UKTV programming from the missing channels were available for free via the UKTV VOD app. It took me four times to get it to sink in that the programming from the pay channels was not available on this app.

Please indulge me.

The effects of my brain injury (cognitive brain function) means that I often have to 'skip back' to replay parts that I didn't understand or where I drifted off.

I doubt it very much. My multiple business and personal accounts aren't even linked or cross referenced.

As Ben says, there were channels before these that went HD only. I think in time all SD channels with an HD variant will be switched off. It makes sense to make better use of the bandwidth available as I imagine most customers now have an HD capable box.

Even those that haven't can still view the +1 SD channels where they exist, albeit an hour later!

The offer of a free V6 was the carrot and the gradual loss of channels will be the stick to get people to upgrade.

If so I would imagine their advertisers told them to get the viewers back or they would reduce what they pay for advertising.

Yep as you say once those advertisers flex their wallets it can quickly change intransigent attitudes.

Not just the advertisers, the sales house too. in this case, Channel 4.

I don't think the SD versions of Dave and Gold will be closed on VM, they will just move to different EPG slots, otherwise all Player customers would lose access to these channels because the HD versions are for Mix customers and up.

I think the point that was being made was that it was not appropriate to ask for compensation simply because channels went missing if it didn't inconvenience you. Therefore, he didn't make a claim.

I didn't ask for compensation either simply because I very rarely find anything on these channels worth watching (either because of the nature of the content or because I saw it originally on the Beeb). So I wasn't inconvenienced sither.

I dare say you will always get some who will jump on the bandwagon when even one obscure channel they never watch goes missing, helping to put up prices for the rest of us.

I was talking about compensation, not deals. Yes, I am on the best deals I could get with VM, and with my energy supplier. I go to our cheapest local petrol station.

So I do have an eye for the best deal, but I would not claim compensation if I did not suffer a loss. That is just plain dishonest. That's my opinion.

And that's the thing, Gold is one of my most watched channels. I just love things like Dinnerladies, Men Behaving Badly, The Royle Family amongst many others and I just didn't bother ringing up for a compensation because of the same reason of it being dishonest simply because for everything I like is on Netflix and I also have them on DVD.

For the person saying about petrol and getting the best deal, I use Shell V Power which is probably the most expensive.

Just a thought - are those people who (temporarily) lost a few channels and claimed discounts now volunteering to pay extra because they've now got more channels than they originally had

No to me it’s classed as compensation for loss of services

Anybody know best way to try and see episodes 2 and 3 of Harrow on Alibi? Managed to see episode 1 before the loss of UKTV and now its back can record/see episode 4 onwards, so have lost 2 episodes we would like to see? Checked on demand and catchup a few days ago and couldn't find anything so are there any alternatives?

UKTV/Virgin are saying on Twitter they are sorting out catch up over the coming days for missed shows. I want to watch this as well but didn’t even see the first one so hope they put that on as well.

Catch up and On Demand content will have to come from UKTV. VM can't conjure it up themselves.

Set up bookmarks for episodes 2 and 3 and they will appear in My Shows when they become available in Catch Up / On Demand.

1) l think that retentions can see your viewing choice or are they very good at guess what channels you use.
2) l also think they can see your monthly bill(s) in my case .in my case £100's a month .Number of accounts paid from one source.

When I called I simply asked what the situation was with regard to cancelling.Given that I had just signed a new contract .With a great discount. Without saying anything else £10 per month extra discount for 18 months was offered . Are you saying l should offer to increase my payment ?

Well what do you think !

Bit perplexed by those moaning about people trying to get the best deal and calling them 'dishonest'. Will they call VM dishonest if the next impending price is higher than inflation, as they have been in the last few years ?!

Think it's more to do with folks being peeved they didn't take the opportunity to get a good deal when VM were at a weak point. Don't worry VM will be clawing it back soon !

OK, but as long as you have a DVR STBm no worries. Which is what you get with everyone for the last 15 years so I would think that wouldn't be so much of an issue now. Good old technology.

For a couple of weeks of so, and which are compensated by any loss being compensated through on demand (from Monday).

So much fuss over so little.
