The TiVo is a bit difficult to get into as they tried to make it tamper proof (I assume the V6 has too?), but it's still possible to get into them. A fair few have done this to get the HDD out to re-use before scrapping them.

Thinking about it this might be why some turn up on eBay etc.

Forgot, I also did it with the 1st TiVo.

Do you mean that you put a larger HDD in or recycled the old existing one?

How difficult was it to get it open?

I put a larger disk in, downloaded the software and away I went.

A word of caution though, this was a series 1 TiVo long before VM started using TiVo software. I seem to remember the only problem might have been that TiVo software couldn't calculate the space used on each recording correctly (but not entirely sure about that.

I changed from a 40gb disk to a 120gb disk from memory.

There were instructions how to do this on the Internet at that time.

I upgraded my original S1 TiVo as it was way too small and there were lots of help pages at the time back in the early 2000s.
I seem to remember the biggest faff was getting the software onto it.
I still have it in my garage along with the remote and should probably just bin it as no good for anything else now.
I had the lifetime subscription on it also

Same here, but it had a good run - don't remember any particular issues loading the software - but it is a long time ago

Well, to be fair, Virgin do bring this to you, via You Tube. No need for a separate channel, even if BT let us have it.

You need to be patient. There are technical issues with UHD which need to be put right. You will have read on these forums that the quality of some of these broadcasts leaves much to be desired.

It is very likely that up to three UHD channels are testing already on Virgin Media and they are likely to launch this year. However, don't get yourself too excited, there's not a lot of content to be had yet. So I don't know whether the programming on these channels will appeal or not.

The technical issues must be to do with the 'UHD ready' V6 as sky have been showing live premier football for most of last season.

About time Virgin sorted out access to these games in UHD.

Thanks for the link, OB.

Even though I don't follow tennis, it's good news and possibly means that UHD content will start to appear more frequently.

I'll probably have a look to see what the V6 can do when put to the test :D

Presumably the V6

1) will be able to record this channel?

2) be able to downscale the UHD channel onto a non-UHD tv

1) From the reports - it does seem to be a proper channel so I guess you can record

2) The coverage is being simulcast on SD and HD channels

Agreed.

If you are thinking of recording UHD, you'd better make sure you have plenty of space available because you won't have much left when it's finished!

That was the point of doing it - to see exactly how much space it takes.

I also want to see if the down scaled picture is better than HD picture.

Good article, thanks for sharing.

"David Bouchier, chief digital entertainment officer at Virgin Media, said: “The UEFA Champions League final is the biggest night of the year in international club football and we know our customers will relish the opportunity to get as close as possible to the action by watching in Ultra HD. And for some reason H2 (SD) is on a lower TV package than History. I'd have thought the main channel would always try to be the most widely available.

There have always been these anomolies. We don't always come out worse than Sky, though.

For example, we get Eden and H2 in HD, whereas Sky viewers can only access the SD version of these channels. The reverse is the case for History and CI channels, both of which are available in HD on Sky satellite.

Well said, Callum. Some people just have the mindset that everything will stay the same and nothing can be changed.

Theone's contributions to Cable Forum will indeed be sorely missed. He was a pretty good source of information, so that's our loss on a thread which so many rely on to get information on what may be happening behind the scenes.

As stuff doesn't seem to get announced officially these days until it's about to appear (or even until after it appears), we can ill afford to lose guys like him.

I thought that - tried it for a couple of minutes, trying to ascertain if the down scaled UHD picture would be better than HD.

Shame we couldn't record the UHD - possibly because Virgin didn't want us to see how inadequate their disc size is?

I can see why he and others don't post here anymore, bit of egg on your faces now isn't it?

Part of this problem was caused by VM themselves as they first announced the UEFA Final would be in UHD on TV Edit, then withdrew the statement from the page a couple of days later.

Live sport is the future of UHD - it will drive acceptance or otherwise.

I understand you don't like sport, but a lot of people do so to say "people want movies and entertainment" is your opinion not fact.

In reality people, especially those who have or are about to invest in a UHD TV want more UHD channels and content of all varieties (not the odd thing hidden on the red button)

The point of that Exclusive was to

A) Confirm the launch date of Eurosport UHD
B) At time of posting on May 16th we did not know at a516Digital has an story up about BT Sport UHD.
C) If you look up all my posts I did not called Theone an liar.

I don't think the comment was necessarily aimed at you, MB. The point is that theone gave some useful information on some intelligence he received and he was rubbished by some members of this forum, which seems to be the kneejerk reaction we get from flagging up what may happen in the future. Strange, given the nature and intent of this thread and the fact that if we relied on official announcements, there would be virtually no news to report most of the time.

As a result, we lost a good contributor to this forum, because he was pretty upset by the remarks made. But he was quite right - events have now proved it. Cable Forum's loss.

For starters There needs to be a dedicated UHD channel, where any UHD programmes of any genre are available to record if the customer wants to.

As more UHD programmes become available then more UHD channels should follow.

If sky can do regular football in UHD then Virgin should get it, or people will vote with there feet

Sky shows Football and F1 in UHD but viewers with Sky Q have to press Red to view it.

Sky UK or Ireland do not have an UHD broadcasting channel.

Is there a dedicated red button channel on the EPG, muppetman?

On SkyQ you can either press RED or select via the menu system.

The menu system also gives you recording options.

This happens with red button options on sky - sometimes there may be 3 rugby matches on the same channel, with the menu option you could record all 3 with the requisite number of tuners available.

Really useful unlike virgin's offering

That could chamge, I should imagine. When the Olympics were on, VM allocated channel numbers in the 900 series for red button options, which meant you could record from them.

It’s true I get the feeling virgin will for a while on 4K play catch up with red button random sports and stuff sky doesn’t want. We pay for sky cinema sadly then 4K which is a big section we don’t get but we pay as much or more

Maybe Virgin will get the rights to Sky Sports UHD when it deal is up with Sky. The old Five year deal is up in May 2019.

If you mean the roll-out of the software level that is being piloted in some areas, that doesn’t include recording from red button.

ITV is considering entering into a £1bn joint venture with the BBC by buying half of the Dave broadcaster UKTV, in a move to fortify British television against the increasing power of US tech giants.
It is understood that the long-standing rivals are considering a deal that could redraw battle lines and accelerate attempts to create a homegrown competitor to Netflix.
The window of opportunity to seal the partnership will close within a fortnight, however.

Virgin can if their wanted to but their run business like Telewest - they do not add channels until it deal is up.

Virgin Media's deal with Sky for all Sky own Channels is up in May 2019.

Sky own Sky Sports, Sky Cinema (It was called Sky Movies in 2014) and Sky Basic (Sky One, Sky News and Sky Sports News)

Not yet! The BBC has two weeks left to buy Scripps' 50% share which it can then sell onto someone like ITV or keep for itself
There is a change of ownership clause in place for UKTV. So when Discovery purchased Scripps, the BBC has the option to acquire Scripps' 50% stake.

The article says that the BBC has an automatic 90 day window to purchase the stake following the sale to Discovery. There are 2 weeks left for them to do so - the BBC would then immediately sell the share on to ITV.

I simply do not know how VM run there business. They don't add channels until a deal is up.

What a way to run a company. Customers want new channels to come onto the next network. Does this mean that VM wont add SA until 2019 ?

If l was running a company, and there were channels out there that customers would want. I would contact that company - discuss a deal and then put the channel on.

No wonder customers are looking elsewhere for companies with better service and better channels

THe HDR update is in the latest software which arrived here several weeks ago. Netflix has it working fine.

But there are no HDR channels available - no even on Sky.

Actually, reading your post did remind that when I used Netflix on the V6 app, the tv did go into HDR mode.

I usually use the Netflix app on my TV so completely forgot :D
