If it shows Blue Planet instead of the football, your TV doesn't support WCG/BT.2020. Go through the checklist here:

Interesting question, but I would think so, as coverage will be on different channels.

However, there could be technical problems with capacity issues, I guess.

RobboEdin 01-07-2018 20:48

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

I suspect Wimbledon is easier as the BBC are the broadcaster and won’t have to convert the HDR format to HLG as they are having to do for the World Cup.

DVD Cinema 01-07-2018 23:01

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

The BBC are not the broadcaster anymore for Wimbledon. It is being broadcast in house and hence the Eurosport showing i assume.

The UHD FA Cup loop is still available whilst the World Cup UHD is on. So it is possible. Another test of the systems.

I agree.

When i go back to HD, it’s like SD in Dynamic Mode.

The tennis looks a lot better than the World Cup UHD though.

I thought this too! Is it a technical issue. Looks rubbish.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

I would imagine it's a bit rate issue: Tennis is rather static in terms of pans unlike football and panning is where an inadequate bit rate is fully exposed.

So two UHD broadcasts now on bbc1.

Out of interest, what's the lag between BBC HD and UHD tennis compared to the football?

mot12 02-07-2018 18:39

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

I have one of TVs that isn't on the official BBC list to get the world cup or tennis, for whatever reason I couldn't get it through the V6 or the native TV app.

This TV(Sony XD93) has an awesome picture for 4K/HDR and everything really, the processor for apps and streaming isn't so hot though. So I bought the Roku Streaming stick+ and can now see the world cup and tennis in 4KHLG it's awesome, great picture no buffering issues. I'd imagine this stick is better than most TVs at streaming so I'm not too bothered that I had to fork out £80 in order to see the world cup and tennis in 4kHLG.

I agree...the UHD stream has been visually so much better than the HD one. You can really tell when you switch back.

If the HD feed is better, something is definitely not right.

There's nothing wrong with my TV set up mate, the PQ just looked a bit dull compared to HD, my HD is excellent quality.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

On an HDR tv?

The settings for an HD picture will mean nothing if the tv switches to UHD mode as the settings for each will be save differently.

The picture here is amazing in UHD/HDR - if you not seeing the bright colours and dark blacks then the tv is not setup to process the HDR signal correctly.

I get the exact same clear and bright images on the V6 and tv direct.

You don't know that. It is only your assumption.

I am expecting more UHD content later this year if all goes well, so keep your fingers crossed. Hopefully, (from my perspective at least) it's not just sport this time around. I have no idea which channels are involved in the current negotiations.

I guess from a UHD, HDR perspective, live sport is the hardest thing to get right. Maybe they want to make sure they can do the more technologically challenging things right first

With things like Movies, TV shows & documentaries they should be easier as everything has already been filmed, edited and ready to broadcast.

I know. I can't wait to get some subscription based dramas and films in UHD. The BBC will make a real difference if it starts to schedule or create on demand material on a regular basis as there will be no extra charges for that. I expect ITV will lag behind, but Channel 4 might rise to the occasion after the BBC get going amongst the terrestrials.

I dare say that these glitches will be sorted out when the trial is over, Gavin, but it does take away the enjoyment of the match somewhat.

I am sure the BBC won't roll out UHD until all these problems have been ironed out.

They don't call it a trial when they plug it on the channel so it's no longer a trial to those who try it via the announcement.

The delivery platform is always going to be the issue as it's relying on outside variables, I just hope to god it's going to be part of a wide platform but I doubt it.

It is two-minutes out for HLG.

My amp (most amps) allow you to mix and match the video and audio channels coming into it.

So simply delay the audio input using a device live TiVo or Sky+/Q - and add it to the live iPlayer UHD/HLG video.

And then close the windows so you don't hear the cheers two minutes early. :)

I did confirm what I meant in post #879

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

They currently show about 3 hours of an old event each evening - but it is loops at any other time when nothing is showing live.

During the football season there was a lot more programming with repeats of matches etc.

Perhaps not the best choice of words by me , it's permanent in the sense that you can tune to it all the time however last time I heard it was just a brief loop played over and over when no live event is on not sure if that's still the case.

Great news and it remains in the top two bundles!

Now for Sky Sports and Movies!

Thanks for confirming , has that always been the case as a friend with BT said it was always the same on a loop this was a while ago though to be fair.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

There is always something at 7pm for a few of hours - but usually a repeat. Some days have 2-3 programmes during the day - but the promo usually.
They have live Scottish League Cup football this Friday evening.
Coming up is occasional live Speedway - but too late for the Grand Prix in Wales.
30th July is the middle of their live daily coverage of multiple matches from the Women's Hockey World Cup.
No schedules available beyond then yet.

Fantastic news, I'm glad Virgin are starting to take 4k seriously and it's a linear channel so I'm very happy :-)

ozsat 11-07-2018 16:33

Re: UHD on Virgin Media

In contrast to today's 4 hour evening only line-up - on Friday they have 13 hours of non-promo programming in 4K including the live football.

I think, muppetman, that it is time to realise that VM is getting ready for the UHD splurge when it comes.

I am a little disappointed that you seem not to acknowledge this development.

I am sure that there would be plenty of people on this forum who would criticise Virgin if they were not ready to screen UHD material when it arrives.

I definitely think that Virgin deserves credit for this new contract with BT. Detractors need to explain themselves.

What are you going on about , I haven't criticised Virgin over this deal I was merely asking Ozsat the makeup of the channel.

The fact is most sport currently isn't shown on BT Sport or Sky Sport in UHD , I agree in time this will change but at the moment it's very expensive hence why both mainly just show their Premium rights in the format.

At the end of the day any UHD is welcome in my eyes at this stage.

Sorry if I misinterpreted your position on this as distinctly underwhelmed! As far as Sky is concerned, well, I am sure you understand how most of us feel about that!

It’s true virgin should be going to sky to renogiate the contract changes due to UHD being massive addition to sky cinema and sports

It’s would be but life doesn’t revolve with sport so far what has come has pleased sports fans but if you don’t like sports and enjoy 4K movies from
Sky cinema or 4K shows like the blacklist and more it’s a damp squib

Small steps!

Next target would be Sky's UHD services!

I agree. Hopefully the UHD movies and shows from Sky will come soon, but getting the technologically challenging live sport in UHD sorted first probably seems sensible.

I expect VM to pull something out of the bag and secure a deal with Sky for UHD content. Then the Full House/XL package will then look really tasty
