Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Can the BBC show the World Cup UHD and Wimbledon UHD at the same time i wonder, as they clash Tuesday?
|
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Did anyone see the Spain Vs Russia in uhd on the bbc iplayer I tried a few times but never saw the link just normal link?

However, there could be technical problems with capacity issues, I guess. |
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
I suspect Wimbledon is easier as the BBC are the broadcaster and won’t have to convert the HDR format to HLG as they are having to do for the World Cup.
|
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
The BBC are not the broadcaster anymore for Wimbledon. It is being broadcast in house and hence the Eurosport showing i assume.
The UHD FA Cup loop is still available whilst the World Cup UHD is on. So it is possible. Another test of the systems. |
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Loaded fine here on V6.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Wimbledon coverage will be interesting. Will it be a feed from Centre Court on iPlayer, or will the entire BBC1 coverage be in UHD?

Not sure ^ I'd guess so with either a live shot of court or a Wimbledon logo across the screen until the next match is about to start
Eurosport will be showing both the men's and ladies finals in UHD on Virgin Media via the red button |
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Tennis looks mighty fine in UHD.
Great news about Eurosport! |
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Here is the website Virgin Media just tweeted re: Eurosport UHD Wimbledon coverage http:// http://www.virginmedia.com/c...-ultra-hd.html

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
This 4K HLG is interesting, at times I think it's not all that at first, but once you get watching you realise how unbelievably natural and lifelike it actually is.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
I would imagine it's a bit rate issue: Tennis is rather static in terms of pans unlike football and panning is where an inadequate bit rate is fully exposed.
|
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
So two UHD broadcasts now on bbc1.
Out of interest, what's the lag between BBC HD and UHD tennis compared to the football? |
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
I have one of TVs that isn't on the official BBC list to get the world cup or tennis, for whatever reason I couldn't get it through the V6 or the native TV app.
This TV(Sony XD93) has an awesome picture for 4K/HDR and everything really, the processor for apps and streaming isn't so hot though. So I bought the Roku Streaming stick+ and can now see the world cup and tennis in 4KHLG it's awesome, great picture no buffering issues. I'd imagine this stick is better than most TVs at streaming so I'm not too bothered that I had to fork out £80 in order to see the world cup and tennis in 4kHLG. |
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
I still find that the HD feed is better than the UHD feed.

There's nothing wrong with my TV set up mate, the PQ just looked a bit dull compared to HD, my HD is excellent quality. |
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
On an HDR tv?
The settings for an HD picture will mean nothing if the tv switches to UHD mode as the settings for each will be save differently. The picture here is amazing in UHD/HDR - if you not seeing the bright colours and dark blacks then the tv is not setup to process the HDR signal correctly. I get the exact same clear and bright images on the V6 and tv direct. |
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Quote:
Don't get me wrong the PQ is very good, but I don't see a big difference. |
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
The big difference is the HDR/HLG stuff.

I must admit I tried the Tennis in uhd yesterday and thought how nice the picture was compared to the football in uhd does any one else think so?

TV app worked fine and HLG brightness was bang on and much better. |

A little more information here on Insight, which should launch soon in UHD on Virgin Media. No dates yet, I'm afraid. The new channel will be available through the on demand system. Hopefully, Virgin will provide this content free with specified packs, but maybe that is expecting too much!

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
They don't call it a trial when they plug it on the channel so it's no longer a trial to those who try it via the announcement.
The delivery platform is always going to be the issue as it's relying on outside variables, I just hope to god it's going to be part of a wide platform but I doubt it. |

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
It is two-minutes out for HLG.
My amp (most amps) allow you to mix and match the video and audio channels coming into it. So simply delay the audio input using a device live TiVo or Sky+/Q - and add it to the live iPlayer UHD/HLG video. And then close the windows so you don't hear the cheers two minutes early. :) Quote:
|
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Ok, i can see delaying the HD Dolby 5.1 feed from Tivo to AVR and then allow iPlayer UHD HLG picture to catch up.
It would be tricky to get in bang on, especially lip sync. |
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
But once the match starts it is only the sound of the ball being kicked to worry about.
You can work in from one direction wih quick pause/unpause use. Quote:

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
The BBC website crashed for me when England beat Sweden. The BBC Sport app did too. My BBC iPlayer UHD was fine, but the normal iPlayer crashed for some at the same time.

I only heard of website viewers having issues - don't know anybody whose app died.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
So BT Sport UHD is the first of our new UHD channels, and remarkably, it is a conventional rather than a streamed channel, which is very interesting.
I wonder if we will also get Sky Sports UHD this year, or whether we will have to wait for the end of the existing Sky contract with VM next year? I cannot wait to see what other UHD channels arrive this year. Anyone got any ideas? I think it might be Insight. https://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2018...ort-in-4k-uhd/ |

Perhaps not the best choice of words by me , it's permanent in the sense that you can tune to it all the time however last time I heard it was just a brief loop played over and over when no live event is on not sure if that's still the case.

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
They currently show about 3 hours of an old event each evening - but it is loops at any other time when nothing is showing live.
During the football season there was a lot more programming with repeats of matches etc. Quote:

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Great news and it remains in the top two bundles!
Now for Sky Sports and Movies! |
Re: UHD on Virgin Media

Re: UHD on Virgin Media
There is always something at 7pm for a few of hours - but usually a repeat. Some days have 2-3 programmes during the day - but the promo usually.
They have live Scottish League Cup football this Friday evening. Coming up is occasional live Speedway - but too late for the Grand Prix in Wales. 30th July is the middle of their live daily coverage of multiple matches from the Women's Hockey World Cup. No schedules available beyond then yet. |
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
Fantastic news, I'm glad Virgin are starting to take 4k seriously and it's a linear channel so I'm very happy :-)
|
Re: UHD on Virgin Media
In contrast to today's 4 hour evening only line-up - on Friday they have 13 hours of non-promo programming in 4K including the live football.

I am a little disappointed that you seem not to acknowledge this development. I am sure that there would be plenty of people on this forum who would criticise Virgin if they were not ready to screen UHD material when it arrives. I definitely think that Virgin deserves credit for this new contract with BT. Detractors need to explain themselves. |

The fact is most sport currently isn't shown on BT Sport or Sky Sport in UHD , I agree in time this will change but at the moment it's very expensive hence why both mainly just show their Premium rights in the format. At the end of the day any UHD is welcome in my eyes at this stage. |
