Ayoze Perez scores in 23 seconds as Brighton concede, Newcastle 3 points clear at the summit as it stands. It's 1-1 at Newcastle. Wouldn't be Newcastle without two horror mistakes.

Barcelona got steamrolled by PSG last night. If PSG played like that over the course, they'd win it outright. Barca were lucky it didn't finish 8-0. Messi got absolutely skinned from the offset. Never a good sign.

Scratch that, the yearly cave in commences.

What do you reckon? 5-1? Arsenal need to shut it down asap, Bayern are awake.

Damn, Arsenal are hanging on by a thread. Ruthless from Bayern. Lewandowski should have 7. The amount of chances they're getting though.

Edit: 4-1, second half destruction and it'll only get worse, Same old Bayern, same old Arsenal. It's alright saying they need a goal.. Bayern are trouble every time they come forward.

It's gotten so much worse since Kos came off too and the bigger concern is how long is he out for.

Re: Football Season 2016/2017

Needing 3-0 at home to a team like Bayern isn't an impossible scoreline, it's just unlikely. Bayern just need a single goal at the Emirates and it's done and that's the more likely :erm:

Lewandowski is a right dodgy one isn't he? He's always looking to go down and play dead as well as taking the chance to give someone a good kicking when the opportunity arises, sly bugger.

If not for Ospina, this is 8-1.

Can we talk about Wenger and the future of Arsenal with it's loyal fans after last night?

Obviously alerting Damien to come in.

I feel like after last night, there's never been more uncertainty around Arsene Wenger and this comes about having watched this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ps97etOjV_k extremely NSFW language.

I wouldn't question it normally but these are obviously not the armchair type fans.

Re: Football Season 2016/2017

I think those fans are extremely out of order. That's is not a balanced reaction to last night, it's not a balanced reaction to football in general, and people need to get a sense of perspective. Even if we weren't talking about one of the best, if not the best, managers in Arsenal's history that video is wrong. I don't like the reactionary traits of Arsenal Fan TV. It's an internet comments section made live. I also hate the ways fans are lifted onto some sort of untouchable guardians of football no matter how nutty their rants are.

At the same time I do think Wenger should leave at the end of the season. Announce it ahead of time as well so that the vast majority of the fans can get behind him and the team for the rest of the reason. People like that guy in the video will still abuse him but most fans will not.

Well that game won't live long in the memory, still a 3-0 win when playing as badly as that, the gods are smiling on us for once. Stuffy free kick, good work from Rashford for second and a very dubious penalty. Possibly the first one awarded at OT this season and there have been three or four much clearer ones than that not given .

How so, United won the FA Cup last season, the Charity/Community shield so far this season, in one final on Sunday with another two still to play for. Just because Liverpool are once again out of everything doesn't mean others are. ;)

Meh. Poor performance from Arsenal, great performance from Sutton. Arsenal still had enough about them though. You go down far enough and you realise how much we take things like crossing and first touches for granted at the top levels. Arsenal were poor but basic technique essentially did it for them.

Someone threw a water bottle at Wenger for some reason and a pitch invasion. Problem with playing at those grounds I guess.

Always support English sides in Europe, ref was pretty useless, it was never a 10 card match.

City might just have done enough as long as they can score over there which given the defending from both sides should be possible.

People are talking nonsense. Do they have to become Villa or Forest before it's acceptable to sack a manager of a team that's won 5 league games all season and are literally destined to be relegated in their current form. They have a single win in their last 11 games, have lost 6 in a row, have failed to score in 11 games this season. Something is rotten and something needed to change. Claudio failed to develop the team, came back into a season against improved sides whilst he changed relatively nothing, now he's paid that price.

Sadly, this happens in football. Hopefully after tonight gme with Gent. Spurs sack Poch. Spurs could be 5-0 up and Ali, nearly breaks a players leg - red fully deserved.

Yup. He would have been fired already if not for the league win. It's very sad, it's horrible and given the fairytale of last season it's hard for many to understand but they've been awful.

Arthurgray50@blu 23-02-2017 22:12

Re: Football Season 2016/2017

Nufc, Totally agree. City won the title. And as far as l know they are the bookies favourites to be relegated this season.

Claudio should have cleared out the squad and started again.

The funny thing is, City won the league last season, and sack the manager this season due to poor results.

But think of this. Arsenal fans have been crying out for Wengers head for not spending money, and they have been poor this season. He still has a job

adzii_nufc 23-02-2017 22:28

Re: Football Season 2016/2017

Huge difference. Arsenal aren't putting up a title fight, that's akin to your typical top four/six dismissal, i.e Brendan Rodgers, LVG, Moyes, Mancini and so forth.

If either of those teams were sat in 17th they'd dismiss the manager including Arsenal. Wenger is there because they're the last club with the Fergie mentality of sticking by their man. Sometimes the grass isn't greener either.

Jose Mourinho wins title, is sacked with Chelsea near the bottom months later. I thought it was a bit early for him to be shot off but there's an example.

Football today is all about MONEY. if a club chairman/directors know that relegation is on the arisen then its there money in the club that will be effected.

So bang goes the main man.

Damien 23-02-2017 22:45

Re: Football Season 2016/2017

Wenger consistently meets the realistic, but unambitious, expectations of the Arsenal board. Champions League every year is decent enough even if us fans are disappointed. Ranieri wasn't being judged relative to winning the league but the reasonable expectation that they should not be drawn into a relegation fight - a expectation that wasn't being met.

I think had Leicester stuck by him then few would have objected but equally this isn't totally unreasonable either.

---------- Post added at 22:45 ---------- Previous post was at 22:40 ----------

Also Arsenal can literally afford to back Wenger, can Leicester to back Ranieri if relegation is on the cards?

Arthurgray50@blu 23-02-2017 23:17

Re: Football Season 2016/2017

Damien.
I may be a Spurs fan, but Arsenal used to be a powerful force. But with fans being mad at the lack of spending (WENGER thinks its own money).

He hasn't brought in any decent players for several years. And Walcott or Giroud are not playing regular. And for Ian Wright the legend in view, to critise Wenger. There must be something behind it.

I used to love going to derby games of Spurs v Arsenal, but its not the same anymore. Both are the same - burn out each season.

Its like tonight game with Gent. Spurs paid 17 million pound for Janssen. In the last three games he has played - approx. 15 minutes.

And Spurs fans are whining he hasn't scored from normal play. Players are NOT robots. For Janssen to have any effect. He should have gone on with twenty minutes. Kane, yes he is a striker. But he should have come off.

I always compare our strikers - Son is like Walcott - as poacher. Giroux like Kane- you feed the striker, then he will strike

I'm a bit surprised really.

I really don't get the shock from so many Leicester fans. Take last year out of the equasion and they are exactly in the position you'd expect. You can't deny how well they played last season and yes he's experimented (IMO) unecessarily this season but.....and their fans need to understand this no matter how bitter a pill it would be to swallow... Leicester City FC is NOT a big club.

Don't get me wrong, they have a big club mentality and again no matter how you view it not only did they win the league last season but did so with authority. But similar to the slightly-bigger Spurs, they won't ever be consider part of a Premier League "Big 4" collection of teams.

After living there for years I do have a bit of a soft spot for Leicester and certainly did not want to see them finish less than mid table and definitely not in/around the relegation zone. But like the title-winning sides of Leeds and Blackburn of the early-to-mid 90s, it's essential they know their place.

Mourinho does it again.

Hope everyone enjoyed club football at Wembley... one day lads. I take it you went from Waterloo tube straight to Wembley Park and just walked down? I tend to stay in that Premier Inn on the right when you're coming down the steps from the station. Naturally it's either a week away or boxing seen as though football is off the cards there for me :erm:

Third visit in less than three years. Always stay at my brothers in Woking for a few days.

United played very poorly for long periods and Saints deserved extra time at least. Just boarded the train back to Woking, returning home on Tuesday.

Would still prefer a better performance but it did look like five games in two weeks finally caught up with United. I wouldn't have fancied them in extra time. Couldn't see anything wrong with the disallowed goal from my seat either.

No it looked a fair goal most definitely.

Not as much or even really as expected. The armchair fans are out though, especially on BBC's re-tweets.

Disgraceful from Leicester. If they had played before with half of this effort Claudio would still be there.
Yet, any other manager sacking at the bottom of the table that then follows with a new guy winning is absolutely applauded as genius... See Sunderland every season. :erm:

The way people are still on this is ridiculous.

As for the game, it's not the way it's being made out either, Leicester aren't suddenly champion level quality again, Liverpool are playing absolutely rotten. The passing is shocking, players slipping all over and Klopp's just stood there not saying a word or doing a thing. They won't be pulling two back like this.

Hmmm, according to this extract from an article in todays Telegraph, Leicester have performed better than lots of sides in the past 20 years, Spurs and the Hammers included. ;)

The notion that Leicester are a nonentity who should simply be grateful is somewhat undermined by their place in the trophy roll call of recent years. If one goes back to 1997, taking into account the three domestic trophies won in that year, and every year since then, the picture is quite striking.
From the 1996-97 season Manchester United have won the most with a combined total of 17 Premier League titles, FA Cups and League Cups. Next come Chelsea (14); Arsenal (9); Manchester City and Liverpool (5) and, in sixth place, are Leicester with three.

Leicester have more trophies than Spurs since 1997.
Historically they are ahead of clubs such as Tottenham, on two trophies since 1996-97, and Swansea City, Middlesbrough, Blackburn, Birmingham City, Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic, all on one.*
It should be said, as politely as possible, that the likes of Everton, West Ham, Southampton, Stoke City, Sunderland, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion – we could go on here – have won none at all in those 21 years
.

Re: Football Season 2016/2017

Hey, Spurs are fair game now. But us? Sunderland? WBA

Fair enough in the 90's we came close and probably should have won the title on occasions as well as the FA Cup and repeated Semi finals and QF's in the Uefa Cup but using us now is no comparison for making them look better. We're a fallen club that's taken near enough 12 years just to get itself out of a hole. Sure we can lay claim to having a hefty stadium, a loyal fanbase and decent profits with cash reserves but by Christ we've been a broken club for years.

In better terms, Newcastle were once what Spurs are now...:erm: We're not expected to win trophies, the big club mantra that people talk about is non existent, it was just entitled people thinking Newcastle were owed a trophy, deserving of one maybe, but entitled to one? nah We've had the champions league nights, the close finishes and so forth, absolutely no different from Spurs rather than silly comparisons to United, Liverpool and so forth. Chelsea quickly rose and took the gap we left, after that we never came close to taking it back. It's fair so say they solidified it too.

Sunderland are in an absolute mess, the owner has no desire to fix it and they've all been thrown under the bus. Sunderland are not exactly shy of the experience in going down but they're in real trouble at the minute, similar to the Aston Villa meltdown.

But then the hammers are only one of seven teams iirc who have never been relegated out of the top 2 divisions (might not be 7 but it's low and Leicester aren't one of them), besides which my post was actually a joke about how dreadful it was to treat a manager that way when he'd brought them something they could only dream of etc

Never relegated to third tier ever let alone 21 years. It's not what you want on your cv it's what you want to watch, I've enjoyed previous relegations as at least you watch the team win most weeks but that last season under fat boy was to much and no fun at all, I wouldn't swop it for anything let alone a poxy league cup.

Tyrone Mings stamp was disgusting. Glad he at the least got an elbow for his troubles. He looks back when running over Ibra too, he knows he's there and in my opinion it's borderline deliberate. Credit to Ibra for not acting like a fanny though and delivering the people's elbow as fair justice.

Both will likely get bans on Monday for clear sending off offences missed by the ref. Ref had no control over the game to be fair.

You best tell Alan Shearer that then, the master at sticking the elbow in when he got crunched from behind. That's exactly what Zlatan did, good old fashioned retribution from a classic strong forward. I much preferred the more physical side of the game we got 10-15 years ago over this ''I'll flop on the floor because he's blew on my shirt nonsense''. I miss the now rare breed of physical centre forward. Zlatan is exactly that though. I don't take it back, someones stuck one on him and he's done it right back.
