I wonder if this is why there are lots of offers around at the moment to get rid of the old stock??

Billions is available until August. GOT season 6 ep 1-3 no longer available, ep 4 has five days left

I don't think I will be bothering with Now TV, I just looked in on their forum and lots of people are complaining that they cannot watch the beginning of some shows, for instance if you joined now to watch G.O.T season six, you'd miss the very first episode as it has expired, that's about as useful as a chocolate teapot!

So why is Billions available until August when it first aired in January, yet you cannot watch G.O.T newest series and it started in April?

Agreed, considering the amount of money Sky paid HBO, they should have the rights to ALL back episodes and season. Services like HBO Nordic have all episodes.

But because Sky have the rights until 2020, the chances of a similar service are zero for the UK.

Sky didn't start to air Billions until a few weeks ago. Also, I think Billions is a Showtime show, not HBO; the deal with Showtime is probably different

Absolutely ridiculous that ppl have to go to all this trouble to try and watch some decent shows, all because the money grabbers cannot agree amongst themselves to do a deal, and make the content available for those who wish to view it without forcing them to join Sky, really makes me mad!

Does anybody have any updates on Tru TV? It was reported here that it was testing off the EPG, how long do these tests take? I would like to be able to record America's Got Talent when it starts on the 16th

The fragmentation is likely to continue. Winners are consumers who want niche channels, losers are consumers who want lots of content from many different providers.

Still no confirmed launch date for Tru TV appearing on Virgin Media UK.

I simply cannot understand why VM doesn't give customers a choice of channels. I know for a fact that there are more True channels, than we have.

I know that when VM took over the Cable network on the Isle Of Wight (I think it was IOW) The network had True channels, that wasn't on the VM network here

The only cable companies VM have taken over have been UPC in Ireland and Smallworld in NW England and Scotland. It's possible that Smallworld had the True channels but they had fewer channels than VM and did not have BT Sport. (I appreciate that UPC was owned by LGI which also owned VM but VM did assume management of UPC Ireland.)

It called "WightFibre".

Here more information:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WightFibre
http://www.wightfibre.com/

Look like "WightFibre" has move to be like Sky Fibre and Talk Talk - re you need to BT Phone line as the channels listed on "WightFibre" very poor website only list Youview+.

Virgin Media UK did remove following channels from Smallworld areas when they join them up with Virgin Media UK.:

•Sky1 +1
•Pick TV +1
•MTV +1
•Travel Channel +1
•Food Network +1
•Ideal Extra
•Movies4Men
•CCTV News

I don't think it's to do with the contracts, Max, which provide exclusive rights to Sky. The missing episodes will be back.

Sky seem to take off programmes on the on demand section when there is a planned transmission due on their linear broadcast channels. They return to on demand afterwards. The good thing about it, though, is that they at least tell you when the on demand stuff will be pulled, so you can plan your viewing. If you miss the date, the series tends to return when the series ends on the main channel.

Game of Thrones seems to do a lot of coming and going because they keep repeating the various series on Sky Atlantic.

Annoying though this is, don't let it put you off the Now TV service. I thought the same as you before we had it and now I wouldn't be without it! Brilliant choice of dramas on there and all for £5.99 with the Entertainment Pass.

Agreed, Max give it a try - you'll only lose £25 max for six months and I'm sure GoT will all be back there at some stage. Or there's a 14-day free trial.
Just for the record Old Boy, the RRP of the Entertainment Pack is now £6.99pm not £5.99pm. But as others have posted, you can get deals cheaper than this.

Have got 2 other tivo and 200MB broadband so I'd think they know I'll probably stick with them

For anyone interested in Now TV, I use this website http://www.artesea.co.uk/nowtv/ to keep track of the boxsets as and when they get put on.

Mad Max, If you have a means of displaying it on your TV for free, ie connect a computer to your TV then give the 14 day free trial a go, nothing to lose.

I like the service and the PQ is acceptable at 720p, sometimes you are against the clock to watch shows so you need to take that into account.

I agree it is a pain that some shows are only on a 30 day catch up service but I guess if you want a comprehensive boxset service then a Sky sub is the only option. If Now TV was made too good then it would take business off Sky (even if it's the same company)

The programmes that were mentioned on page 54 (currently the penultimate page) of this thread Game of Thrones and Billions seem to be available until exactly the same dates on Sky Box Sets on a Sky box as they are on Now Tv. They are currently showing as expiring 13th June for GOT and late august sometime (sorry can't remember exact date) for Billions.

Thought people might find it interesting that this is the case with the two services being opposite ends of the price spectrum.

Sometimes not always I may add it's a case of content expiring at 12.00 only to continue under a new contract at 12.01 it depends on the show.

The newer content has shorter windows probably in part to do with DVD sales.

Once downloaded to the Sky box not all content expires even if it's been removed off the On Demand service.

Replacement of the remaining SA V+ boxes is planned to take until the end of the year. Sky Movies HD On Demand have been MPEG-4 for a couple of years.

Maybe good news for viewers who want History HD to launch on Virgin Media UK.

Community channel was given Virgin UK Channel number 269 that right beside HISTORY on Channel 270.

VM gift the capacity & EPG slot allocated to the Community Channel, so I wouldn't be surprised if this includes a clause that they can be moved if neccesary.

Got an e-mail earlier from SKY. Can only assume this will be the same on Virgin Media:

"From 8 July, we're revolutionising the way you watch movies by launching Sky Cinema – the new home of Sky Movies.

Don't worry, you'll still get all the features of Sky Movies you know and love.
We're just changing our name and adding exciting new improvements to make it even better. All at no extra cost to your current subscription.

So sit back, fire up the popcorn and prepare to experience movies like never before.

Welcome to Sky Cinema"

"A new premiere every day
From the biggest blockbusters to family movies

More of the latest cinema blockbusters
Major films available 8 months after cinema release and over a year before you can watch them on any other subscription service

Over 1000 movies on demand
Ready to watch whenever you want

New improved HD with sound closer to cinema
We’ve improved our systems to make sure that you never lose a pixel of quality. Sky has moved to a new format for our movie master files, giving us a third more pixels (2m vs 1.5m) and 4 times the number of colour shades (1024 vs 256 for each primary colour). This means sharper and more vibrant pictures for a better viewing experience.

Our new improved HD gives you a crisper picture than ever before. This isn’t Ultra HD or 4k so you don’t need to buy a new TV – just sit back and enjoy.

Our movies sound is closer to cinema – we’ve increased the audio dynamic range to give you louder explosions and quieter whispers, so that it is more like when you’re in the cinema. Again there is no need to make any adjustments to your TV."

Sorry if this is old news. I'm not on here that much these days.

Hi all here we go more uhd content not for virgin but we are paying the same or more this is a sky q exclusive

As well as putting a time frame on when we can expect its first UHD offerings, Sky has revealed what 4K flicks will be available on day one.

Joining the likes of Spectre, The Martian and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation in Sky's early UHD movies collection will be Everest, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant.

That's not where Sky's UHD movie line-up will end though - it will remaster old movies for the new TV standard too.

"We are also now very deeply ingrained with many of our studio partners to go back to the original classic movies, and remaster them ready for Ultra HD in exactly the same way as we did with HD back in 2007," the broadcaster explained.

Sky Q customers can look forward to being the only people to watch sky cinema in Ultra HD by the end of the year

The improved service will feature a new premiere every single day of the week, which is a 75% increase on the four per week offered by Sky Movies.
Upcoming films include Spectre (8 July), Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (9 July), Steve Jobs (18 September), Bridge of Spies (30 September) and The Danish Girl (23rd October) will all premiere in the first few months alone. The Jungle Book, Zootopia and Captain America: Civil War are set to headline Sky’s most ambitious Christmas movie collection yet.

Major films are available just 8 months after cinema release, and can be watched exclusively on Sky Cinema for over a year before you can watch them on any other subscription service. 45 of the top 50 films at the UK Box Office in 2015 are exclusive to Sky Movies.

For those of you with a wider taste for world cinema, it’s not only about blockbusters. Customers can enjoy more of the best stories from around the world with a dedicated new ‘World Cinema’ slot every Wednesday from 10pm. Some of the critically-acclaimed films coming up include: El Ardor (Argentina); Theeb (UAE); Tangerines (Estonia) and many more.

Sky are also expanding their film*library,*with around 1,200 films available to view on demand. An*increase of 20% over the current Sky Movies system. More than half of all the films watched on Sky are on demand with one billion downloads or streams in the last two years alone.

Sky is now the*exclusive home of Star Wars (although I suspect most of you reading this already have them on disc!), adding*Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens in August 2016, with*Rogue Onecoming August 2017 and Episode VIII in*August 2018.

Because us and sky customers pay for sky cinema but we don't have access for sky cinema UHD or 4K, so for that reason the price should drop a bit to account for that

For one thing, the new Sky Cinema channels will be an enhancement to what you are currently paying for, and secondly, you will probably have to pay extra anyway for the UHD (either to access the UHD channels or for your ability to receive them on the new box, or both).

You also assume that the UHD channels will not be available to Virgin Media viewers. Although Sky have said that Sky Cinema in UHD will be available to Sky Q customers by the end of the year, they have not gone as far to say that it will not be offered on other platforms as well. There may well be negotiations taking place on this between Virgin Media and Sky as we speak, for all we know.

Just to be clear, a refund is definitely not on the agenda!

Good post. I think the OP intended to write "reduction" but wrote "refund" instead. ;)
As we know it works the other way round - not a reduction for the existing service but an uplift for the enhanced one!

Sky has not said anything about Virgin so I'm not sure where that comes from.

In terms of its direct customers, Sky has said "The typical monthly cost for existing Sky+ customers will be around £12 extra compared with their current Sky+ package"
https://corporate.sky.com/media-cent...t-from-just-99

Let's also not forget that the UHD films have not launched yet. That's only due to happen by the end of the year. http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/new...ter_this_year/

It costs extra on Sky you need the Sky Q Silver bundle to receive UHD in line with your subscription package so it's not just a case of having a Sky Cinema subscription.

So you now accept what Spiderplant said is correct , when UHD movies launch you need Sky Q Silver bundle which costs more hence is comment about paying for UHD.

Your argument is that as a Sky Cinema subscriber on VM you should get UHD movies included when in fact everyone on Sky who'll get them will be paying extra for the luxury.

Where is your source for that information?

I would be disappointed with Sky if they deliberately imposed an exclusivity period on UHD channels. However, it is true to say there will be a small period of time when the service will not be available to Virgin viewers because the new Tivo won't be available until around Christmas or early next year.

Have you really fallen for that spin? Obviously, the increased price is reflected in the considerable cost of the Sky Q box!

ozsat 17-06-2016 21:37

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

Sky have in their SkyQ FAQ - "There will not be any additional subscription charge for viewing any UHD programmes when they are available, they will be included in Sky Q Silver subscription bundle."

I would be very surprised if there are more than one or two UHD channels.

SkyQ seems geared up to download films etc. - so really only sport needs a live channel for UHD.

Mad Max 17-06-2016 21:41

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

We wouldn't be able to watch these movies in UHD anyway, would we? The Tivo afaik cant handle 4K at present, so what's the big deal?

OLD BOY 17-06-2016 22:49

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

Yes Max, but the new Tivo box will be UHD ready. Clearly, Virgin will need some decent content and will be heavily reliant on Sky for sport and films content.

I can answer that I was chatting to sky today saying I'm wanting to upgrade sky plus to sky q and got into a chat and he was explaining that material in 4K is rumoured to be an exclusive for a while at least then he estimated the extra from a team discussion was estimated at a extra £7 per month for 4K for movies and sport £7 or £12 for both

Will the content only be available via the app with all the problems that presents and also exclude non tivo customers ?

If it's an app in the same way that iPlayer and Netflix are, then it'll be TiVo only.

Which is not surprising considering TiVo is Virgin Media's main TV platform and is required for all currently sold TV bundles. The V boxes are legacy boxes.

But there aren't any specific details one way or the other in that web article.

I assume all the catch-up content will have aired on live TV before including Sherlock but I could be wrong.

The press release is on VM's website and I have copied it below. Three additional points I've noticed:
1. It also says that the channel W will be launched on Virgin Media Ireland.
2. The deal incudes the launch of the updated UKTV Play app on Tivo.
3. The VM quotes are from David Bouchier who was mentioned in a Telegraph article earlier in the year as saying that Tom Mockridge recruited him to sort out VM's TV offering.

UKTV will double the number of programmes available to Virgin Media customers, giving subscribers access to more than 10,000 hours of catch-up and box-set content across a range of award-winning UKTV Originals, US and UK acquisitions, and much-loved favourites from the BBC plus ITV and Channel 4. Hit shows include Taskmaster, Nev Calling India, Quantico, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Only Fools & Horses and Sherlock.

The deal also includes the launch of the updated UKTV Play app on Virgin Media’s TiVo platform, allowing Virgin Media customers to watch a wealth of catch-up and box-set titles from UKTV’s free-to-air channels Dave, Drama, Yesterday and Really. The wealth of shows available include Wonders of the Solar System, Parks & Recreation, David Starkey’s Monarchy and Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled.

Simon Michaelides, UKTV’s Chief Commercial Officer, said, “Virgin Media is one of our most valued customers and we’re delighted to have partnered with them to expand and enhance our pay TV offer in this way. Virgin Media subscribers now have unique access to the most comprehensive on-demand offer from UKTV anywhere in the market. This step-change in the volume of on-demand content is part of our long term commitment to growth in pay TV and we look forward to expanding on this in the future.”

David Bouchier, Chief Digital Entertainment Officer, Virgin Media, said, “Throughout this year we've been expanding the fantastic range of on demand programming which lets our customers watch what they want, when they want. We’re delighted to be building on our leadership by giving our customers more UKTV shows than are available on any other platform. With the arrival of the Play app and the doubling of UKTV catch-up content our customers can access more of the entertainment they love in the way they want.”

In addition, the broadcaster has expanded the volume of shows available from its pay exclusive channels, Gold, W, Alibi, Good Food and Eden, with brand new episodes from shows such as Murdoch Mysteries, The Strain, The Rebel and Rosewood. Virgin Media customers will also have access to even more box sets of UKTV Originals, including Dave Gorman Modern Life is Goodish, Marley’s Ghosts and Hoff the Record, and some of the BBC’s best-loved classics such as Doctor Who, Luther, The Office, Death in Paradise and Blackadder.

Following the launch of entertainment channel W – whose viewership has increased by 19% amongst its target audience since launch - distribution of the channel is also being increased to include Virgin Media Ireland.

Virgin Media customers will be able to enjoy UKTV’s enhanced content offering, from later this year.

Does the VM/UKTV deal start immediately?
Is there more content via on-demand already or do we have to wait for a certain date for it to kick-in?

Cheers

Maybe it's due to start later this year after the TiVo speed problems have been resolved?

Otherwise there's little point in adding another app that would only make TiVo run even slower, not that I wouldn't put this past them.

Found this from over a year ago, did this happen and was it a game changer?

It has diddly squat to do with any of that at all.

More apps do not make TiVo slower.

As Spiderplant has said on a number of occasions, the number of apps on the Tivo are not responsible for its slower performance.

On the HBO item, I don't see that this was even much different at the time. These programmes were already available on Amazon on a pay per view basis. Virgin are just as able to do the same but have chosen not to do so.

I think that's because traditionally, VM (and Sky) don't sell TV programmes on a PAYG basis just films. BT and TalkTalk which use a different model.

For all of you that love/hate the Sky Movies pop-up channels, they are here to stay and become even more frequent...lol

Sky's popular pop-up channels will also be growing in number with Sky Cinema. Instead of having one appear only a few times a year, Sky Cinema will see new ones appearing every month, with a dedicated Sky Cinema Pixar channel coming in October, a Sky Cinema Fairytales channel coming in the summer, and a dedicated Sky Cinema Star Trek channel to celebrate the launch of the new Star Trek Beyond film in July (and again in September for Star Trek's 50th anniversary). There'll even be a Sky Cinema Tom Hanks channel, following on from last year's Tom Cruise pop-up channel

Hi MB could you tell me if or when VM UK might be getting the missing VM Ireland channels?
