Definite difference in quality on the newer stuff, Sporting Reds etc. and on the few live games I've seen. Worth the extra quid for me anyway.

MB Views: Will Virgin Media Ireland mean new channel lineup?

On the back of last Friday news that UPC Ireland is soon set to be rebranded as Virgin Media Ireland we at Media Boy HQ thinks that Virgin Media will give UPC Ireland viewers the following new look EPG to stop ads saying MTV - Virgin 134 (UK and N. Ire) / 701 (Ireland):

To be fair on VM, this is the longest that I have known them to allow a dead air channel to remain on the EPG. I fear that this is the end.

Not surprised really, BT will play their competitive advantage for all it is worth. Bit strange though that as XL TV has BT Sport which is how the AMC channel is linked, then why not part of XL? But that would be a wholesale agreement (correct?) rather than a specific purchase of the Sports package from BT as has to be done for Sky customers I believe.

After Sky Atlantic, another case of VM being blocked from new content or VM not prepared to accept BT terms in this case? Understand Amazon Prime will also have first rights for the repeat viewing of "Fear of the Walking Dead" for example, so it could be some time before VM is able to show some new series now on AMC. Not good for VM I have to say.

Probably because BT Sport is a well known channel and it's addition will help VM add/keep customers.

AMC, outside the realms of forums such as these, is hardly known of at all and therefore probably not worth VM paying extra for at this point in time.

How are they? Like SKY BT are investing in content VM seem to like to just leech of SKY and BT for content, although VM seemingly got a good deal in the sale of their channels they really should of kept them as now they would have a strong bargaining chip, VM are getting left behind for content and do not seem to want to invest in it, there is loads of stuff that hasn't been picked up that VM could go for but they won't, they will wait until someone else gets the rights and then try to leech of them.
VM should just drop tv and stick to their strongest product broadband which they are investing in.
If VM don't want to pay the going rate then tough cheese they won't get the content.

l think you will find that Virgin will try to get us as much content as they can but when other companies start asking premium prices for mostly average content then they are right not to pay over the odds for the content even if it mean not getting it as customers are already paying over the odds for their TV subscriptions and will certainly not accept another fiver being added on to their bills that's for sure.

I was talking yesterday about thing like MTV.

MTV is on Virgin Channel 134 but on UPC Ireland it on Channel 701.

When NTL took over Telewest the new NTLTelewest took the Telewest Channel lineup as Sky Sports 4 was way up on NTL Channel 930 (I think) but Telewest has it on Channel 516.

When VM decided to sell their channels and rely on bought in content, many people were concerned.

In the USA, that would have proved to be a wise decision as all the TV networks are now starting to provide online access independent of a cable subscription.

In the UK, with BT acquiring AMC, we are seeing the opposite; a TV network tied into a specific TV provider.

But at least, the 'usual villain' associated with these things (Sky) is doing things right by providing independent access via Now TV. BT should do the same with AMC.

I feel we will not see any more new channels launch this year due to Virgin Media are busy working on the UPC Ireland side of the network.

Bar Lifetime HD we feel the following UPC Ireland will soon launch in all areas of Virgin Media:

-History HD
-CI HD
(With Lifetime HD launching in all areas)
-MTV Classic
-Disney Channel HD

We think Virgin Media will drop:
-Fashion TV
-EWTN

We feel that UCB Ireland will only be in Virgin Media Ireland areas.

(All information listed is the views of Media Boy HQ.)

Yes if VM want to compete with Sky and BT they need to play big. To be fair on BT I have been impressed on how far they have pushed into TV in such a short time, not just on the Sport side but the recent AMC deal as well.

Channels like Atlantic and AMC may show plenty of poor "fill-in" material, but they just need a few "star" series to make an effect. I am not a Game of Thrones fan but it is very popular. And for those zombie addicts (like me), Fear of the Walking Dead (even with mixed reviews in the USA) is a key attraction for AMC.

VM need to find routes into popular material or customers will just find other routes, like Now TV as you mention.

They (That's Oxford) said they were and I told them they were not - they then changed their story to "we will be later in the year" - but didn't say which year.

That's irelelevant as they were. merging in the same country. Ireland has different priorities for the main channels so it wouldn't matter about having the same numbers for lower range channels.

Well spotted! :)
It would make a pleasant change if it did make it onto VM; recent FTA channel launches like Spike and TruTV have skipped cable.

New information from Virgin Sources.

We was thinking tonight about Lifetime HD launching in October so we ask our sources if it sister channels that broadcast right now on UPC Ireland will also appear when Lifetime HD launch.

We got the following back:

As of 8pm tonight our Virgin Sources are not aware of HISTORY HD or CI HD launching on Virgin Media anytime soon.

There's currently speculation that the owners of the National Geographic Channel are to launch a free version of their channel. It should be noted that, as yourtv will be showing some National Geographic Programming, some believe that they are one and the same channel. Nobody knows for sure yet.

Another attempt to bring Irish programming to the UK is to be made.

Sky and RTE have just renewed their carriage agreement- the interesting bit for us is that they want to bring some Irish stations to the UK.

For rights reasons, I expect this to mean something along the lines of Tara TV as opposed to simulcasting RTE1 etc.

I would expect VM to pick up this channel if it were made available to them.

Well In September 2013, RTÉ did announced plans to launch the channel in the United Kingdom under the working title of RTÉ Ireland, as part of their five year strategic plan.

Yes, more likely to watch some programming from that channel than 'Your TV'! Assuming, that is, that we get some of their peak time viewing and not just the daytime TV reality shows!

Agreed! We need more good apps to be added to our Tivos. This should now be a priority for VM given the major change of pace (to dead slow) in respect of new TV channels.

I dont think the current Tivo can cope with the apps it already has. It is tempermental to say the least sluggish and buggy.

However with rumors of a new Tivo coming soon maybe that will iron out the bugs, I hope it does I like the Tivo but not its slugginess and lock ups.

I hope History HD arrives soon for Ice Road truckers. As lets be honest it no longer shows History programmes.

I've just looked at the Tivo thread from DS and this post from 2011, Tivo was released in 2010

Quote:

I think the new Tivo box which is smaller and a lot cheaper would be better value anyway. Who the heck wants to pay £149 for a box with a hard drive which can contain hundreds of hours of space? where would anyone get the time to watch all the recorded material anyway?

The new box sounds more realistic and at £50 isn't too bad. As long as it has an ethernet socket for Home Networking though, it will be a good buy.

Pretty sure it was still being tested in 2010 and wasn't made available to existing customers until 2011.

Fairly sure I paid £100 to upgrade in march/April 2011 (an offer that was only made to existing customers).

Initially Tivo cost £150. Later VM reduced it to £99. After a lot of complaints from people who had taken it from launch and paid £150, VM refunded them £50 per Tivo.

I can't remember and took the info from here

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TiVo#United_Kingdom

It does say VM released it in DEC 2010 which i guess would make strategic sense, enabling people to get one and record all the repeats over christmas :)

Catchup services were in their infancy back then and i don't think all the terrestrial channels had them?

One of the links from that Wiki page says this, from DS

Quote:

Any customers wanting to get the TiVo service will need to pay £199 (plus a £40 installation charge), along with a £26.50 monthly subscription for the XL package when bundled with a Virgin phone line, or £32.50 without.

They must have decided it was too much?

If I remember correctly, the Tivo's released in December 2010 went to VM employees only. Then in early 2011, selected customers were given a Tivo to trial, before the official release later in 2011 (April?). And initially, after the official release, only existing VM customers could get one. New customers signing up had to wait a while for a Tivo.

As i said i can't remember but it all depends on the accuracy of the wiki page. On there it says the 3rd tuner was activated, i remember a software update, rolling out from the 17th march 2011.

Good riddance. For all I know, I'm sure Virgin and Sky won't want rubbish like that given the content of channel. And a +1 makes it even worse! Right now, I'm feeling sorry for Freeview customers who will be suffering when these two channels launch.

The one thing i love about Youview is you can hide the channels so they never show in the EPG or can't be watched until you unhide them.
My Samsung tv goes one better as it allows you to organise the channels in the order you want (it's a EU model not UK) also you can delete the channels too if you wish.
However given that both FOX and Nat geo are involved in yourview i think over time the content will greatly improve with possibly nature docs etc being on it and possibly some FOX shows if there.
QUEST was a pile of rubbish when it first launched look at it now it's a decent channel.
Keep in mind VM and SKY both have endless shopping channels and the awful ITVBE so anything could happen.

RichardCoulter 05-09-2015 05:22

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 2

Having just read this thread, I have a feeling that Talking Pictures TV might be coming to Virgin Media around the 15th of this month.

They originally stated that they were coming to Freeview, then this was withdrawn and replaced with a statement that said that they were coming to a new TV platform, but that they were unable to say which one.

They go on to say that it's "good news for those without Sky", so i'm speculating that if it isn't Freeview, they may have meant Virgin Media. In addition, the 15th is a Tuesday- VM usually add channels on Tuesday & Thursday mornings. They say "around" the 15th- launch dates are pretty fixed with Sky- but with VM start dates are often more vague.

Of course, it may simply mean that they have had their nuckles rapped by Freeview for announcing the news prematurely!

Or maybe it's going on FREESAT?

It must be possible to manually tune it in already?

I must admit i was surprised when someone said a couple of weeks ago that it was coming to Freeview, the startup costs for that are very high, i didn't think it would happen.

Yes maybe but you would need the transponder number (I think that's what it's called) to be able to do it,and then it may be encrypted.

Just googled it's not encrypted

Could be so, many people use the terms for the two platforms interchangeably and often get them confused- even channel operators.

Well, I would imagine that both Freesat and Freeview would have cheaper carriage costs than VM.

Freeview is much cheaper for those going down the IPTV route with a Freeview EPG listing and the unused capacity on the HD mux must be going for a reasonable price.
