Ozsat is spot on , I've just watched the D-Sat test myself and it does indeed say available everywhere from August 4th , after having a good view I can't say its something I'll be watching.

Update from a Rumour poster source on TruTV.

Not 100% certain (That TruTV will launch on Virgin Media) but last I heard they were still in talks with both Virgin and Sky.

More about TruTV:
-On May 14th Broadcast did report that TruTV will launch in the UK will launch on Freeview, YouView and Freesat.
-TruTV got Sky EPG from Canis Media who sold Bid Shopping old channel number for Price Drop.

Lol, what delicious irony. Sky Sports News being moved to Sky channel 401. Who would have thought? Looks like Sky and their wonderful channel listings have become just as stupid as VMs. Guess we do indeed now know why VM have done it, looks like Sky wanted them to.

Cheers for the news MB, this will keep me chuckling for a long, long time.

Again, the reasons why particular HD variants are missing vary. The channel may be in a contractual agreement to be exclusive on one particular platform for a length of time, such as ITV Encore HD, the channel owner may be literally or effectively refusing to allow VM access due to unreasonable carriage costs charged eg Sky Atlantic HD or it may be that both parties cannot agree carriage terms for a whole variety of reasons (including financial viability) eg MUTV HD.

AFAIK, VM don't have any bandwidth constraints that are preventing them launching any new channels as they have been upgrading their network behind the scenes.

Morning All,

Thanks for the insight Richard.
Be interesting to see which part of that spectrum the non-high profile HD variants sit.

Hope VM can secure these one day. Would improve their already vastly improved TV service that little bit more.

ITV have had to do some re-gigging since Encore launched and with the launch of BE coming. Looks like ITV2 is going to be more comedy focused with ITV 3 becoming more general. We are already seeing that with them showing Long Lost Family, Love Your Garden, Dickinson's Real Deal and the soap omnibus showings on ITV3 now.

I fully expect Big Brother to show up on ITV Be. Viacom have already said they are committed to upping the quality of shows on Channel5 and have given them a sizable budget to do so. The rights are up for grabs after the next celeb series and it has been proven that it can hold an audience of between 1-2 million for the non celb shows and 2-4million for the celeb ones. Any show getting that on ITV Be i am sure they would be extremely happy.

It will be interesting to see what ITV show on ITV2. The shows they have bought in Mom, Dads, TVOD, Viral Tap have all been quite poor

If this is true, I am disappointed. To my mind, they should be using ITV2 for the best repeated programmes of the week, new original programming, films and perhaps some older stuff thrown in. It should continue to be regarded as their second main channel. If it's going to become another 'Comedy Central' then that is a big waste of an opportunity to improve ITV's reputation.

ITV 3 should continue to show dramas, most of them of the older variety from 3+ years ago is fine (I watched Jericho on ITV 3 and thoroughly enjoyed it), and ITV 4 could be used for programmes of other genres such as sport.

The way things are going, ITV1 and ITV Encore will be the only channels ever used in our household (although ITV Be might be of interest to my wife!).

The sad fact is that the majority of the British people are content to watch hours and hours of bilge. You can't blame the TV companies for capitalising on this as such programmes are a lot cheaper to make and to purchese.

However, you would have thought the likes of ITV would have more self respect than to reduce all its channels except ITV1 and ITV Encore to this level of bad taste.

Apparently ITV Be is at the request of advertisers whilost ITV Encore is designed to tap another revenue stream - subscription TV. Short answer is that by launching these channels, ITV will make more money than by not launching them.

No disrespect Harry but the hd variants are a must universal hd especially is past a joke how long vm have waited for that, this overrated sa really does make me laugh thou it has some of the best shows to grace our shores from the us ie,game of thrones, banshee, veep, true detectives, nurse jackie, blue bloods and penny dreadfull just to name a few.Granted it's not a channel I watch everyday but at the moment I am watching it more than sky 1.
Everybody has there own opinions personally do not watch sd channels only hd my epg on my sky box and TiVo only show favourite channels which are hd channels only ;)

Everyone indeed has their opinions Howard and I fail to see how any channel not currently on VM can be "past a joke".

I was missing Sky Arts 2 HD for some while but the alternative of a dish simply wasn't on. Then lo and behold the HD channel was negotiated on and added to the channel list. I was lucky. Perhaps this channel you want will come too but until then it is give up on VM or watch the SD version or do not watch it at all. Sadly those are the only options.

I also am a HD nut...Everything I watch and Record I look for the HD version first.
I agree that they are a must, just to improve the amount of HD channels available on VM. I know not all channels appeal to everyone and that's why there is such a vast choice available to us, but everyone should be able to watch what they want in HD ;)

If VM could target all the HD variants that we don't have, but still only be missing Sky Atlantic, that could push them above Sky, especially on top of the channels they have managed to acquire so far.

I'm not moaning, because what we have is fantastic, just from a personal point of view, this could push them even closer and maybe beyond Sky in terms of what channels and especially the HD content that we can watch.

The more HD the better...until 4K comes along :td: hahaha sorry guys.

I'm not moaning, because what we have is fantastic, just from a personal point of view, this could push them even closer and maybe beyond Sky in terms of what channels and especially the HD content that we can watch.

The more HD the better...until 4K comes along :td: hahaha sorry guys.

Great post,ex actually how I feel but worded better ;)

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 3

No offence taken mate, its all about opinions on here. Yeah, the HD channels will be nice, but if VM are not allowed to have them yet (they may be still be exclusive to Sky - I have seen no info to say if they are or are not), there is nothing they can do. The cost of the channels might be deemed too high as well. Thankfully, the only programs I have watched and enjoyed in the past on Universal are available on other HD channels, so if I choose to watch the odd episode now and again I can watch them in HD. As such, I can live without it. The sooner Nat Geo Wild HD gets here though, the better.

In all honesty, I have tried GOT twice now and I still find it very boring. I have started on the books and they are far superior. I watched Banshee and by the end, I could take it or leave it. The end was pretty predictable in my eyes, and I don't know where they can take the show in the second series. The main characters are still going to try and stay alive and stop Rabbit killing them. The cop will try and hide his true identity, and kill who ever he needs to. The only other option they have is if the cop and his girlfriend/Rabbits daughter teams up with Rabbit and they try and take control of the town. Either way, the show will just revolve around sex, alcohol and lots of fighting. I wont lose no sleep by not seeing it.

I must admit though True Detective (rented via lovefilm) was excellent and I have ordered Blue Bloods as well, based on friends recommendations. Penny Dreadful's premise seems ludicrous to me, and if it's adverts are anything to go by, Veep is certainly not for me. I don't know much about the rest of the programs because I am really not bothered by them.

As for Sky 1, I think the last time I even looked at that channel was when Banshee was on it.

It could be something to do with an exclusivity period as VM prides itself on having HD at no extra cost. Maybe Sky know this and wanted to keep those HD variants for themselves until VM can dive in and get them all :)

It would be funny if we end up with all HD variants and people start leaving Sky for VM. It can't be just Sky Atlantic that keeps the customers.

If that does start to happen, Sky will need to maximise revenue from Atlantic hopefully offering it to VM :D of course this is all my own thoughts and I don't mind being ripped to shreds lol

No it really isn't any exclusivity for the majority of HD variants the only exclusives to Sky are Sky Atlantic HD and ITV Encore HD. Do a bit of digging and you'll find most of the other HD variants are available on BT TV or UPC Ireland.

If that's the case, I wonder why VM wouldn't persue them. MM do you think it's down to money?

Guardian: BSkyB poised to seal ‘Sky Europe’ deal.

UK broadcaster to acquire sister companies in Germany and Italy in deal that could net Rupert Murdoch as much as $10bn

The deal will net Murdoch as much as $10bn, which is expected to be used by Fox to make an improved offer for rival media giant Time Warner, after its earlier $75bn-plus bid was knocked back in June.

You obviously have several sources - I wonder if you might be able to grade them on the basis of past accuracy? You know, something like "a source who has been 80% accurate about 15 things" or similar.

At the moment the only thing I can say is that when you say "rumour poster" I assume that means somebody who doesn't work for Virgin, but that doesn't give any other indication of whether they're worth listening to.

Agreed Den and the facts stack up... (Source: Broadcast Magazine)

Viewers watched an average of 98.5% of TV via a television set in 2013, down 0.3% from the previous year, according to research from commercial TV body Thinkbox.

Total daily viewing of linear TV in the UK was pegged at an average of 3 hours 55 minutes per person in 2013, according to the Barb-backed study, around nine minutes less than in 2012. The slight dip has been caused by the lack of significant sporting events over the previous 12 months.

Viewers watched an average of 3 minutes 30 seconds of the broadcasters’ VoD services per day via tablets, mobiles and laptops – equivalent to three 30-minute shows each month. Accounting for 1.5% of overall viewing, this was slightly up from the 3 minutes per day (1%) average recorded in 2012.

Just under 89% of linear TV was watched live, rather than time-shifted, compared to 90% the previous year. In the estimated 60% of homes which have TV recorders this figure was pegged at 83.6%, down from 84.4% in 2012.

Thinkbox claimed that the average viewers watched 47 ads per day at normal speed, up 1.6% from 2012.

Chief executive Lindsey Clay said that the research showed that viewing via the primary TV set was holding up well.

Oh for heavens sake. That bloke still has far too much influence over Sky in this country. If Sky launch a "Sky europe" channel and have exclusive European TV content, I will be devastated. Its a combined satellite business which will be in the UK , Germany and Italy rather than a channel.

Murdochs 21st Century Fox own 100% of Sky Italia and 57% of Sky Deutschland , BSKYB (UK) will buy these meaning 21st Century Fox will make a tidy sum leaving Mr Murdoch with his 39% (current BSKYB holding) in the then formed Sky Europe hope that makes sense.

Good summary, I would add that Murdoch does not own 21st Century Fox himself but he does own 40% of the voting shares. The company is listed in New York and like most listed companies most of its shareholders are financial institutions (pension funds, insurance companies, unit trusts etc). It's his large number of voting shares that gives the impression that it's his company.

Key thing is he's grown his companies and most have been very successful. Just being a shareholder himself in these companies would not guarantee success - he's used his management skills. Think about how Sky has grown over the years - this has been reflected elsewhere. He's made bold decisions with Sky and with his newspapers, eg by taking on and beating the print unions. We may not like all of his methods and politics but he's been undeniably good news for his shareholders - most of whom are pension funds and insurers.

What has Viacom got to do with any of those channels? Gold HD has been rumored for a while ever since the launch of Alibi HD.

As for Tru TV they show the US version of Impractical Jokers. The UK version is one of the funniest shows on the TV so have high hopes they will show the US version on Tru TV UK.

That's very much what I took from the survey......if it was the same one ;) Seems SKY are more aware than ever that people don't want to pay for HD. They also seem very aware there's plenty of HD content elsewhere cheaper. Netflix was my answer to many of the questions.

You would be surprised bud,Netflix and the vastly improving amazon prime are starting to hit the pay tv market.Vm realised it quicker and did the deal and if a agreement can be reached prime will follow,I think it's only a matter of time before they pull the hd charge(think it's more of a case of having to bud);)
