I think it was for the niche reason VM wanted to plug it a bit more.

As more people buy newer TVs, 3D seems to be coming as a standard part of it.

The 3D content I watch at home is mainly the animated feature films with the kids. But I would definitely watch more 3D content if it was available, but I know it's not the same for everyone.

Resolution changes will definitely be easier to implement. I hear VM are working with Tivo on the next gen boxes with 4k in mind.

3D glasses seem to be the barrier, plus only the animated films seem to get it right at the moment.

My colleague from the Netherlands says there are 3D channels in Europe as well as they have access to Sky 3D too

It is a shame, when I was with Sky, I did watch it quite a bit.

I'm sure there are lots of VM customers with Sports and/or Movies subs that would like to watch things in 3D as well as the other content that's on there.

The 3D on-demand that Virgin has is limited, but the quality is good.

With the news of Sky Sports HD plus the 2 news channels coming soon, I am surprised VM havent pushed harder for Sky 3D.

I remember reading that VM was trying to push it more, with more 3D on-demand content coming.

Or maybe they have and we just don't know about it lol

didnt the CEO or someone in VM state they weren't convinced on the merits of 3D and didnt think it had a long term future? Maybe it wasnt a case of sky trying to keep the channel exclusive but a case of VM not interested in going after it?

im sure there is an interview out there?? or am i going crazy?

This was from July 2013, so may not be relevant since the new take over

When we questioned Virgin Media as to why it is pushing 3D TV after the BBC said just last week that its service will cease at the end of the year because so far uptake has been minimal, the UK ISP said that although 3D "is not setting the world on fire" it still sees it as a valuable add-on to its service.

"The 3D market continues to develop and mature and, with one million 3D shows watched on demand since we launched in 2010, our customers have enjoyed getting a taste of the 3D experience from the comfort of their own sofas," a Virgin Media spokesperson told The INQUIRER.

I think it is important that VM embraces new technology to ensure that it remains a serious player in the market. Otherwise, Sky will continue to be regarded as the market leader and hoover up the much needed income from new subscribers.

I don't care if we don't get Sky 3D, but I would want to see a comparable selection of programmes on demand on Virgin.

Is it the 3D glasses that are the problem?
I'm a wearer of glasses so the 3D ones don't bother me. I have used the 3D glasses over my normal glasses and used them when I have my contact lenses in and haven't had any issues.

I don't use my 3D enough on my tv, but it's down to content more than anything.

If I had a choice, I would def take the HD channels (Nat Geo, Universal etc) over the 3D one ;)

It seems odd that VM are launching this service, yet, unlike Sky and Freesat, don't have the the BFBS radio station.

It's a pity about the rights issues preventing non military personnel from watching BFBS, they show Game Of Thrones on BFBS Extra.

Thought HBO was exclusive to Sky

I wonder if any UK based military people would be allowed to watch this channel :D

But like OLD BOY says, it's important for Virgin to keep exploring with new tech and new content.

I can't imagine there are many people who have VM that don't have access to a HDTV.

That's excellent news if true. I'd dearly love that to be closely followed by a clear up of the epg. I know that's not always within Virgin's control, but I'd like to think they're considering it in the negotiations that they must be having with the channel owners.

Edit - was referring to the 6 new hd channels, not Forces TV.

AFAIK, apart from having to prominantly place the five PSB channels, VM can set the EPG up however they like. Unlike Sky, who are required to ensure that slots are allocated on a 'Fair, reasonable and non discriminatory' basis.

Hmm, I'm not sure either, I never thought to ask!

I'd have thought that, as an organisation not driven by profits, that aims to put the ability for families etc to keep in touch/keep up to date with military operations first and the fact that it will be FTA on satellite makes me think it will be in M.

There again, apart from any FTA cable channels, aren't all the channels in M aligned with Freeview? So maybe M+ then.

Morning All,

After the 4K and 3D discussions, I stumbled upon this article.
Keep your money in your pockets at the moment, 4K doesnt look like its about to take off soon.

http://www.techradar.com/news/televi...c=rss&attr=all

"it would seem that Britain's TV companies are very reluctant to embrace Ultra HD as a format."

"Geffen goes further, suggesting that it's now Sky taking the broadcast technology high road. "The investment that they have put into 3D and subsequently 4K, is enormous. Sky is now doing what the BBC once did some time ago."

"All the broadcasters are keeping their plans close to their chest," he admits. "I'm sure though at some point 4K will come to Sky, because they're all about customer desire. However at the moment Netflix and other internet delivered outlets are beating everyone else to it."

This is i'm guessing means 4K is a long way from VM's mind

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

Forgot to mention that Forces TV will also show sport.

Negotiations between Turner and VM to get their new channel, TruTV, onto the platform are said to be going VERY well :)

TruTV was formerly called Court TV in America.

I certainly wouldn't be investing in 4K kit just yet.

I'm not even sure I'd bother investing in new equipment myself, the difference isn't as much as it was between SD (which can be terrible) and HD.

Sky will push it obviously, and then launch all their HD channels in 4K and keep them as exclusives and the process starts again.

It's a brave move from Sky if they do because we haven't completely moved away from SD yet. If all channels were in HD and it was fully established, I would say go for it. Just can't see 4K really picking up for a few more years, but by then the next thing would have come along.

Where would this leave VM? Do they plan for 4K or do they try to think ahead with what's after. It's a tough one.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

Movies in 4k would be a real stumbling block, many studios are loathe to let home owners own almost master quality copies of their property, it's the reason no real physical delivery format is available.
Another reason 4k might not launch in uk is 8k is on the horizon...

If VM and Sky were to offer the same channels, this wouldn't damage Sky at all. They would be opening their channels to a wider audience meaning they could earn more revenue.

People are a lot more money conscious now. If customers are moving between Sky and VM every 18months to make use of the half price deals, it makes sense for both companies to offer the same. Sky will earn money from their own customers and from VM for taking more channels off them.

All so this would hurt BT chances of making inroads into both companies market share

Exactly Blue...Sky wants BT to fail. VM being the middle man can only benefit from both of them.

Sky might as well hand VM the channels now lol :D

Its not that simple ,

Sky makes around £6 billion in revenue annually from Sky Retail subscriptions as opposed to £396 million on wholesale subscriptions and £440 million in ad revenue. The retail subscriptions are far greater than both wholesale and advertising combined.

I don't think Sky would agree with that! Their precious USP (Sky Atlantic) has been the dominant force in their thinking since the VM channels were sold to them!

Hopefully not though it may sometimes feel like that. :) Forces TV launch date has been advised and the launch dates for the three Sky Sports channels in HD are being discussed.

I dont know if members realise this. New channels may be coming out. It depends on what VM want to have for its system.

For some unknown reason VM pick and choose what they want, and NOT for what the subscriber wants.

And what l can never understand is WHY we have so many Indian and Asian channels, and yet we can never get channels from Scotland, or Wales for that matter.

I would love to see ITV Encore, which is FREE CHANNEL.

You will not get this channel Arthur due to ITV signing a exclusive 4 year contract with Sky.

No chance of itv encore for the foreseeable future it's a sky exclusive as they have invested in the channel and regards new channels coming since the new owners took over i have noticed only new channels we seem to be getting involve paying extra for ie Netflix, sky sports channels and it's ones customers pay extra not vm :(

I'm afraid I have to disagree with most of your conjecture. Firstly, VM obviously selects the channels that subscribers want or it wouldn't be in business. Everyone has unique needs so it won't satisfy everyone 100%.

What Scottish and Welsh channels do you feel you are missing? Presumably the Asian ones are there because VM feel they can make money out of them, which would be their basis for all channels (except maybe something like Forces TV which they may favour out of corporate social responsibility).

Regarding ITV Encore, this is exclusive to Sky so the likes of TalkTalk, BT and VM cannot have it for a certain period of time, reported by The Independent to be at least 18 months. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/bu...e-9093204.html
I'm not really sure what you mean by "free channel" as you need a Sky subscription for it. ITV's own press release describes it as "The new pay channel..." See http://www.sky.com/shop/tv/itv-encore?DCMP=knc

We have the Scottish and Welsh channels aka BBC ALBA and S4C, as for ITV encore no chance at the moment as it's a Sky exclusive plus do we really want anymore rubbish from ITV?

The Independent said "It is understood ITV Encore will air exclusively on Sky for at least 18 months, as the pay-TV giant seeks exclusive content in its battle with resurgent BT." http://www.independent.co.uk/news/bu...e-9093204.html

The partnership with Sky is for four years but ITV Encore will not be exclusive to Sky for that length of time. As you said, per the above article "It is understood that the channel will be exclusive to Sky for an initial period but could later be available on other platforms such as Virgin Media."

@Arthur, if Virgin took all the channels that subscribers wanted and put the prices up to pay for the content you would be moaning about the cost. So yes, they pick and choose what channels to take.
