With the previous version both HD and SD where displayed exactly the same size. Went through the video options, switched all resolutions back on including 1080p accepted them which then had BC 1 HD and SD images the same size. Went through the video options switched back to just 1080i and BBC 1 HD and BBC 1 SD images the same size. Curious.

Had more chance to check this out this evening - with just 1080i as output from the Tivo there is definitely a difference to the internal scaling applied by Tivo with this release when it's up-scaling.

Got the update on the 15th finally - speed is vastly improved, still some menu screens in SD though that's the only negative so far.

Got offered the same deal when I rang yesterday:
£5 off for six months (on top of loyalty discount) = £30
1 month free NetFlix trial + 5 months @ £5.99 = £29.95

So effectively 6 months free NetFlix :D

Re: TiVo Update/Netflix

What I find really annoying and patronising is that Netflix Tivo doesn't have all the film genre, ie those that contain highly sexual content. This includes Steamy, Foreign and Gay and Lesbian.

Many viewers are adult and households with children will not have told their children the PIN. I find this nannying quite offensive and demeaning.

A work-around is to select films from such genre via your PC browser by adding them to your list in personalisation. Examples and comprehensive lists from these genre appear or get suggested by the TIVO app.

Netflix apps in Android, PS3, Wii, iPad, Internet TVs and Windows 8 and 8.1 do not appear to have the same restrictions as the Virgin Tivo app.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, if you experienced problems like slow response of switching between channels or menus with this update like me, just reboot your TiVo box, hay presto it then works fine! :)

Finally a dumb question about this energy saving feature, is it just for forgetfull or lazy people who don't put their box in standby mode when not watching TiVo, as if you put your box in standby anyway you are not saving any more energy after this update?

I rang VM yesterday to activate my free 6 months and was promised the code within "30 minutes". No sign of it yet and judging by the comments posted here it's going to be a long wait.

It's to save energy, apparently turning a TiVo box off will save the planet. Also when it's put in standby it's using considerably less power than it was before the update, because it stops the hard drive spinning and it doesn't buffer anymore.

There have been many changes to the video processing to allow it to support all the Netflix video formats. Also some people experienced the picture being cropped on the left-hand edge, so an adjustment was made for that. You may be seeing a side-effect of one of those changes.

There's something odd about the way Netflix chooses genres, but I don't think TiVo is to blame. On both TiVo and PC, I get Foreign and Gay & Lesbian, but not Steamy. On iPhone I only get Foreign. I turned the Parental Control slider up to the max, but I can't see that anything has changed.

Spacebar not working? Also it's 12 months not 12 years. For people already on Premier or vip pack or thinking of upgrading/joining then this indeed is a very good offer.
For someone like me on M+ then i'm better of just paying the £5.99p/m to Netflix.

Yes the picture processing changes think I've noticed a few things too. Weirdly maybe , to me the best picture is with 1080 and 1080p only engaged. I know 1080p is meant to only have any effect with Netflix. But to my eyes the TiVo picture looks bettter with both engaged rather than just 1080 only. Maybe just be placebo though or more to it , spiderplant any tricks where the best pic is at now then ?

I'm not aware of 1080p affecting anything but Netflix, but there are so many complexities to video processing that I couldn't rule it out.

Definitely can't explain. I don't get Foreign or Gay Lesbian or Steamy on my Tivo, except when I use the workaround I described.

Another issue is that the only profile I get on Tivo is my own. The profiles of my wife and 2 younger children, whilst present via my browser, do not appear in Tivo.

As I believe spiderplant has said elsewhere on here, profiles will come, it's just there were some issues with it so an earlier version of the app is the one currently available

Switching channels seems to be a lot faster too, but picture quality when using Netflix is definitely making the most of my TV now.
The quality is brilliant when streaming the "Super" HD titles.

Not sure on that. I'm sure I read somewhere that Netflix weren't bringing the new interface to TiVo until 2014, so there may be a middle update for VM boxes

Apparently, the new Tivo Romario has just got the new interface. The bitrate info has disappeared on the new interface on the Romario, which is disappointing IMHO.

You won't get the same menu speed you get from a games console, but its not bad I guess - about on par with the normal Tivo menus (which aren't top tier either, but not annoyingly slow).

Not too impressed with the new Netflix app on my Xbox 360 - it looks better but we've actually lost a few features from the old version, like not being able to bring up episode info for the currently playing episode. There's also no way now to see if the content is actually playing in HD.

Very variable picture quality when streaming Netflix on Tivo. Was watching the Hobbit lat night (Saturday 8PM onwards) and it was really struggling to get to even 720 let alone 1080p - most of the time it was at 480 which is very disappointing. Certainly won't be going beyond the 6 month free trial period if this doesn't improve. Hemel HP23 area.

I noticed last night from 7pm that a super hd film, The Princess & The Frog, mostly stayed at 720p, jumped to 1080i for a few minutes but returned to 720p. I also watched Charmed around 10.30pm which played at 420 SD according to the info button which was like watching a poor Youtube video.
Teesside got Netflix just before the roll out started, last saturday we watched 2 super hd movies back to back without any loss of picture quality.

Thanks for the info. Yes 380SD info was via the info button. Guessing there is congestion on the link the internal modem is using then, not good. Assume this is segmented from the main broadband network?

The Netflix offer is itself an offer to get people to recontract.

You've already done so and in addition, as you've said yourself, your offer is better than the Netflix one.

Offers VM do aren't random, they are there to achieve specific business goals, so I don't see why there is an expectation that you can always stack them up.

I think they do loyalty discounts purely to keep customers who have stayed with them for several years now. It's becoming the norm now for customers to be jumping ship from sky to virgin to get 12 month cheap deals. If virgin offer a loyalty discount in the longer run for them its better for business.

I could say to virgin "well sky are offering me free broadband for a year but its hassle to leave what can you do" "well how about a tenner off your bill?" it just makes sense to keep long term customers from becoming "bed hoppers"

Another question: what have VM got from the netflix deal other than being able to say they offer it?? This just seems to be a great deal for netflix being able to offer their services to more customers??

I agree with you over the current situation. The so-called 'loyalty' discounts are, in my opinion, the exact opposite.

I have advocated for some time proper loyalty discounts, applied to all who fit the criteria. Say £5 discount for 5 years continued business, £10 for 10 years, etc.

No discounts for threatening to leave or saying I'm hard up or .......

Interesting that Nationwide have just such an account for their loyal savers with a higher rate for those with 5, 10 or 15 years continuous custom.

I guess not the kind of comment you were expecting but I, too, will sit back and wait for the flaming.

Actually, this is the exact reason I meant ... I'm all for long standing loyalty discounts, but IMO, these should be automatically applied along the lines of what you stated.

To call and say I am leaving or give me a cheaper deal, well, Virgin should call their bluff.

Anyway, how often is Netflix updated with new content ? - We have taken out the 6 month Free offer. I have no plans to leave Virgin, so recontracting for a year is not a problem.

Interesting that Nationwide have just such an account for their loyal savers with a higher rate for those with 5, 10 or 15 years continuous custom.

I guess not the kind of comment you were expecting but I, too, will sit back and wait for the flaming.

I agree with you both.

I wish VM would name a price for a service and you either take that service at that price or you don't. If all discounts were discontinued, then the overall price of those services could come down. A loyalty discount related to the number years of being of a customer does make sense though.

But sadly, the days of non bartering over price, have long gone and you either take part in the game or loose out by paying full price.

I'd agree with that to be honest. I don't know whether virgin don't follow that at the moment tho??? i've been with virgin/telewest since 2000. I was given £10.00 p/m off about a year ago after hearing people mention it on here.

i dont think they'd give loyalty bonuses to people who have been with VM for less than 3 years???

You imply that you had to ask. In my system, everyone entitled would get it, not only those that ask.

Currently, there is no entitled reward for loyalty at all.

My pricing system would have fixed prices for each of the three services (maybe even 4, including mobile) with loyalty discounts as previously described and bundle discounts, dependent on the number of services taken, say £5 discount for two services, £10 for three services.

So.....

TV XL £40
BB XL £20
Phone M £15

A ten year loyal customer with those services would pay monthly:

£75 less £10 for loyalty less £10 for three services = £55 per month.

The numbers are examples, not what I would expect them to be.

I don't agree with loyality discounts at all, you get what you pay for. Don't like the price don't pay the price.

l have been a Virgin customer for many a year and l have no loyalty discount at all but our savings come from us having the VIP pack because as the old saying goes the more services you have the more you save.

...and I absolutely agree with that too but there are so many people today who think that, if their cost/benefit analysis says the product or service is too expensive for their perceived benefit, they have a right to a reduced price.

Back on topic, the good news is that Netflix is back running in HD for me today. Looks like the network issues have gone, for now at least.

I never ring demanding reductions , I do however ring to cancel once a year if I've seen a cheaper deal elsewhere its usually at this point I have something offered to me which I usually accept , I've never paid full price in years. :D

If you haven't got your code I think you can still use the one month trial and then simply apply your code when it arrives giving you seven months free. I've got this image of people not using Netflix because their code hasn't arrived yet?

I thought the offer was 6 months free, but it appears that it is actually in effect a £35.97 voucher. If prices rise then that won't be worth 6 months any more.

Just think people should be aware, is all.

Well Andy we will just have to take that chance and remember the 6 months offer free is on top of the 1 month offer when you join Netflix so in my mind that's good enough for me.:)

You will get your email on your normal Virgin email account but check your spam every day just in case it arrives in there but that's highly unlikely.

They should actually ask you / confirm the email address you want it sent to when you arrange it via Customer Services.

However, by default it should be the same one that your ebill notifications go to.
