Ive said it before, I doubt Sky will loose customers, it will just mean consumers will have a choice based on whats more cost effective for them, a lot of people cant get Virgin, a lot cant get Sky.

Personally having choice based down to cost will be a lot better for the companies and the consumers. Not only will it challenge the companies to be better and not have a "this is what we do, put up and shut up" attitude, but it will also help drive costs down.

of course sky will lose customers as VM much better value than sky it a no brainer better box better BB and bt sports free in XL did you not see chad post about it when sky was asking there customers lots will move to VM.

Sky want people to chose them and pay for the boxes and HD charge they not gonna give VM the withheld channels and lose their own customers

maybe we should ask the sky customers on here it they would change if sky give VM the withheld channels

Well I'm a sky and vm customer and hopefully juggle a few figures next sept and wrangle a couple of deals and I will stay with both, you will allways have people who prefer one to the other and end of day it's down to best deals bud.sky have milked sky Atlantic for 3 years and did aquire some vm customers at first but certainly not now,I have a lot of friends who have had problems with either company and said they will never go back.dont forget not everywhere can get cable and of course some places are not able to have a satellite attached to there wall.personally the only channels I can see sky keeping hold of is sky sports 3+4 and sky Atlantic hd,I can see the adverts now only available on hd thru sky !!!!!!!!!!!;)

But if the channel is available on VM, Sky can use that money as leverage against customers. Currently the cheapest way to get all the channels (non premium) is not decided, they are both the same price.

Add premium to that mix, Sky Movies, Sky Sports or both minus BT Sport, it's Sky

Add BT Sport, it's Virgin.

Both have their highlights in the TV market.

Regards Broadband, Sky Fibre can match the lowest available broadband speed on Virgin, which for some people is more than enough, and I believe (without line rental) it's cheaper from Sky.

Whereas Virgin can beat them if you want 120mb broadband.

I'm not really a sports fan, so personally all the channels and Sky Movies means by best offer is Sky, however I like fast broadband meaning my best deal is actually to have BB from Virgin and TV from Sky. I also have a dedicated line from BT for work purposes so don't really need the Broadband from Virgin.

The dedicated line is quite unreliable, so I leave personal things to my Virgin Broadband and work things to the dedicated line.

My best deal is to have a mix of both, however I was given a good offer by Virgin to get my tv and phone from them. If Sky could offer the same I would probably switch to them.

It's not about the channels, it's about the cost at the end of they day.

But if you read my post... The money from VM can be used in leverage to reduce subscription costs, driving in more customers who love a bargain

If Sky were to give up Atlantic and VM were to get free Netflix in XL i can see a lot of people switching. I know my brother is waiting for VM to get Atlantic before he switches. The Netflix thing is just a further sweetener for him (if true)

So if sky offered him a 12 month half price deal on a full package to stay .he would say no because vm have now got sky Atlantic and Netflix

<edited> i'm drunk ignore me lol i was saying i just decided to take that sky offer up as works out cheaper for movies and sport so by keeping my deal with vm xl tv , bb60mbs , phone for £45p/m and adding sky tv with their entertainment pack , movies , sports for £25p/m works out at a £9p/m saving if i took movies and sport with vm.
If gets a bit too much i can always drop down to vm starter pack.

New Rumour:

My Rumour poster has told me a deal has been struck between Sky and Virgin for Sky Atlantic and Sky Atlantic HD.

Both are expected to launch at some point in the Autumn possibly as early as end of October.

Sky Atlantic will be in the M+ package with Sky Atlantic HD being in the XL pack.

These will launch at same time as the other Sky channels aka Sky News HD etc.

Good news on the Sky Atlantic rumour. If movies are to launch on BT on 26th, it would be a good time for a Now TV Entertainment and Atlantic on VM launch. Especially for Sky as both companies will make a song and dance about Movies and Atlantic, while Sky can just sit back and watch consumers see the prices while flogging 50% off coupons at them!

WSJ is reporting that Netflix are now in talks with several US cable operators to put their app on stbs in deals similar to those they've announced with Virgin and Com hem in Sweden. An interesting point to note is that there appears to have been a recent carriage dispute between one of the cable companies (comcast I think) and cbs. The report suggests that if a deal with Netflix had already been in place it would have given the cable company greater leverage in the negotiations because they would have been able to point their customers in the direction of all the cbs content they carry through their association with Netflix.

It's something I hadn't considered, but I wonder if the inclusion of Netflix on Virgin's platform will put them in a stronger position when it comes to negotiating carriage agreements with channels who's content is also available through the app?

Good point , I reckon its certainly made Sky Movies look to strengthen their position hence their expansion onto the BT Platform , there's been a lot of talk about Netflix launching an app on YouView so maybe Sky's tried to get in there first although to be fair I guess they already have Now TV available on there.

Absolutely, and I think this is what may have led the Competition Commission to conclude that with Netflix on the scene, there is no need to regulate Sky in relation to their exclusivity deals.

I am speculating here, but I think that Virgin's ability to stream programmes from Netflix is forcing a re-think from Sky, and this is part of the reason for them relaxing their position on Sky Atlantic.

It's all looking good.

As of October 14th no new channels has been confirmed as launching on Virgin Media this week.

I was told by an other insider last week that News 18 was set to launch by October 18th.

I think it's all about the content. Linear channels I think will be in a long term decline soon as alternative methods of viewing content gain traction.

When we first got cable, we were wowed by the 20 or so additional channels available to us. Then we went digital and were bowled over by 100s of extra channels. Then in came video on demand, which was fantastic and started to change the way people watched TV - gradually at first, but now a significant majority use VOD on a regular basis. Now in comes Netflix. You can see where this is all leading, can't you?

I predict that within the next decade, the majority of all viewing by cable customers at least will no longer be through linear channels.

This is great news if true, but I am hoping that they have negotiated the full SA back catalogue for VM's on demand section. That will make it a top addition for 2013.

Has anything been said about adding SA On Demand with VM?

Care to elaborate? Or give us a clue? Is it really a big surprise (like the Sky channels or Netflix) or a tiny surprise (like a +1 shopping channel)?

Take this for what it is - just a rumour at the moment.

I've just been sent a PM from a usually-reliable source that said VM may be starting Netflix in some areas tonight. No idea what time or in which areas.

Also Netflix should launch (when it's official) with a major tivo update. Apparently no channels will officially launch tonight though.

Don't think it will be the Netflix/TiVo update.

Those in testing areas were informed by post to leave their TiVo boxes on to ensure the update came through. I think we will know well ahead of time regards the netflix rollout

Nope, just genuinely enjoy the speculation on here:). I guess it is about 80-90% accurate. I know some people do not like the speculation, but I think thread comes alive when people speculate and/or post rumours about what may or may not happen.

Apologies if my last post came across as negative. That was far from the case.

Whilst I doubt I would watch massive amounts of content from Netflix, I am really looking forward to it's arrival in the not too distant future. :)

I am gonna sit back and hopefully enjoy the rest of the day (and speculation) on here!!

Another interesting development today is the Canadian Government will soon require TV providers in the country to offer viewers the ability to pick and choose channels rather than being forced to take bundles of channels.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 5.

We might finally see TV bundles going and consumers given the power to pick only channels that interest them. In light of the shift toward more on demand content, it would make sense that channel providers will do all they can to retain their place and therefore their brand.

CNET are reporting that the Canadian government are considering ending bundled tv channels.

The consequence may be that the niche channels may not have enough subscribers to survive. But hey ho. If new "channels" or programmes can pop on YouTube and Netflix, then maybe it's not all doom and gloom.
