IMO, the most likely scenario over the next few months is:
  • BT Sport launching, as a standalone package
  • Sky Atlantic (& HD) added to XL, from money paid to ESPN
  • Some of the extra ESPN money being used for bringing in other HD Channels, such as Universal and History (i.e. companies who have recently signed new deals, waiting for ESPN to leave the XL pack)

Personally, I think that would be a pretty good result. Being a sports subscriber, BT in the XL pack would be a nice luxury, but you can't always have perfection.

Universal HD ??? I wish, given up all hope of seeing that sometime soon :(

BT Sports in XL pack but only for people who have subscribed for over a year imo

It would be a good result,

colin25, I personally wouldn't say yours is that good, infinity doesn't provide the speeds I need for my work. I personally wouldn't pay anything to Sky after the way I was treated doing freelance work for them a few months ago, but that's my opinion.

I see BT being VIP & Standalone
Sky Atlantic M+ with HD in XL
And a few more HD, probably History and CI coming when Lifetime launches

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

The only other way I can see it been free in the XL pack is if they did it for a year from the Launch other wise I suspect it will be a standalone channel.

Given VM's stance on not allowing companies to sell there channels direct like BT are doing on Sky negotiations are bound to take longer as a wholesale agreement will need to be signed

It's not VM's stance, it's the technical ability of the platform

Even in HD, still a good reason to fall asleep watching on a sunday. HD just makes the sleeping more vivid :)

Though, as with all sport, it does look better in HD, even if you aren't into the sport

What's with all the mb bashing at the moment?!

Anyone could have done? Then why didn't they? MB confirmed the arrival of Bt sports, citing a Virgin employee as the source.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

I bet BT Sport will be a seperate add on costing same as Sky users. They bought the football rights to sell broadband, can't use BT Broadband on virgin media.

We will get Sky Atlantic SD. They want give VM the HD version so they can have HD exclusivity similar to Sky Sports F1.

That is all.

Seems simple to me. Two options. One it will be on VM for £15 a month or two BT will not let it on VM at all and annoy advertisers viewers and sponsors all in one go.

If you don't get it, then there will be months of..virgin never gets us what we want etc etc etc

That scenario is looking very likely - Sky Atlantic added to XL, BT Sports as a standalone (like BoxNation)

Against my better judgement I'll be paying for it (:erm:BT Sports I mean) Unless someone from Virgin is reading this then I'm not willing to pay for it.

If VM do add BT Sport and Sky Atlantic then in reality all they need to add is Sports and Movies to TV Anywhere app on iPad and Android so it can compete with Sky Go

I've suspected all along that BT sport will not be on the XL pack, but as to whether I'd pay extra for it as a stand alone, it depends as to what's on offer.

Firstly I'd only want HD and all the channels, i.e. BT Sports 1 & 2 and ESPN. However at £15 a month I'd be put off as it's just under half the price of Sky Sports (HD) with much much less than half the content I'd want to watch (Just 38 games, no championship, no cricket, no NFL and no US open tennis or men's ATP 1000 events and limited darts). If I was into rugby then I can imagine the attraction.

I'm hopeful that VM will at least do a deal where XL customers get it at a discount say £8 to £10 a month. Otherwise I'll get it for a month just to see what it's like then cancel.

Have to say that if VM add Sky Atlantic HD, and SSN HD and SN HD then I think the XL pack will be very good value compared to SKY and BT.

Keeping fingers and legs crossed, hopefully we will hear very soon

BT has other football, including french, german and itallian leagues. Plus europa cup and FA cup.

I think sky has the better tv package. No contest.

I dont care about BT Sport as I am not a sports fan at all but I would really like Sky Atlantic as it shows so many great shows that I watch :erm: . Game of Thrones, The Borgias, Banshee, The Newsroom and Boardwalk Empire as all awesome shows and some of the best drama programs to come out of the US in recent years.

I am quite happy with my service from VM, its always nice to get extra stuff for little or no extra but i would much rather BT sport avoid the XL pack and go stand alone giving those that want it a choice.

My own personal opinion is premium sports from ESPN and Sky Atlantic are not of the same value (due to the huge costs for sports rights). Even though i am not hugely into the sports i understand that is adds value to the XL package. I would much rather both BT and Sky Atlantic avoid the XL package and we get a price freeze for the next 12 months. Sky Atlantic can't be that much of an issue for the 4million + VM customers otherwise they would be Sky customers.

Maybe if Sky had a box with the same amount of functionality as Tiivo, instead of a box that should be on the Antiques Road Show and broadband in the same league as VM's, then you could well be right... but they don't.

3 tuners, yes at one time i thought so too.

But a you have on demand, with lots of content, and plus 1 channels, not sure I agree any more.

I have the 2tb box...it is huge, even when recording all programs in HD (oh, virgins, that is a lot of channels in HD) :D

And I have never miss on sky, which reminds about show coming soon

None. But as i have said many times, HD is mainly needed for sport.

I have no real issue with standard tv for recording other programmes.

My issue isn't content, it is time to watch it all.

I almost need to do a Michael Keaton in Multiplicity

Not really IMHO. Not only does HD give you a better picture (important in itself), but also 5.1 surround sound; well except for ITV, who don't seem to care about the enhancement that 5.1 audio can bring.

I don't see Hd as important for entertainment shows, just sport. picture is perfectly fine.

On sound, I guess that makes a difference. i don't use 5.1.

My ears can hear the tv without it :)

I agree. I have a 2TB as well and with all the HD content i record i still have space and it would have been filled on Tivo by now. On Demand and Catchup are far better than VM's offering

I know bud, just personal preference don't watch sd channels my TV guide on TiVo is permently on favourites and there all hd channels.
Regarding sky Atlantic I hope is does turn up,It's sky that have lost out on the extra money I have watched all the big programmes off it by other means and in hd (of course) and so have others so if it does great but if its sd only well I will continue watching by other means there loss.Universal is the one I really miss loads of program's I would love to record on my TiVo but had to obtain again by other means sd picture for me is a backwards step(again personal preference)
The next few weeks are going to be very interesting me thinks I hopefully we are going to see the benefits of our new owners and show the way they are moving forward.
finally got a email back from ch4 regarding more 4hd today and basically they want to go on the vm platform but are awaiting a channel allocation from vm so looking good on that one, still awaiting a reply from universal hd owners(only been a month).could be they have finally got fed up with my monthly email regarding the channel:D gonna after start emailing vm now ;)

This whole HD/SD debate amazes me - Sky make such a big deal of HD, yet less than half their customer base actually take it?

Main reason for that is the £10 hd charge,if that was stopped there would be a lot more.Customers just look at it that they are paying twice for the same channel bud

Why would any normal household need 2TB? I have the 1TB TiVo which is currently holding around 35 HD movies and hours and hours of TV shows and series for me, the Mrs and the baby and still around 25% free. In all honesty, I don't think I'm ever going to get round to watching it all.

It is surprising how much you collect. Normally i would get close to 75% full on my old box (no HD recordings) when going on hols for 3 weeks.

I usually moved programmes to my dvd recorder's hard/drive, then either to dvds (for hols) or watched it later.

Now no worries, I will hopefully never get more than 1/2 full. But who knows.

I've got a 1tb TiVo. I think I'm right in saying that 1tb with Virgin is worth less than with Sky because of the way shows are encoded on cable?

Even so I generally run at about 60% of capacity (excluding suggestions, of course) and the truth is some of it I never find the time to actually watch.

The point I'm making is that I reckon you'd have to be watching an absolute shedload of television for 1tb not to be enough on either platform.

Probably right. I moved from 500gb box..so 2tb seems big (maybe bigger than a shed :))

However, if I had a family, I could see the need for 2tb (hands up who hasn't seen kids saving all the rubbish of the day, I have when younger, though it was my rubbish)

And being able to save a series or two, to watch when you get around to it is good.

I think it's only £5 per month now for HD on Sky. And then another £5 for Sky Premium HD on top of that

I do have a family - I've just lost the weekly baby looney tunes v. Andrew Marr Show debate, again! - and I still find 1tb enough, this despite the planner basically mirroring the entire weekly schedule of TLC and nickelodeon! I still have space for the decent stuff I want to watch, and that includes a couple of full seasons I haven't got round to yet.

I do think the od selection has fallen behind Sky now, but with over 200 bespoke suggestions currently on my TiVo I rarely go od now anyway.

Quote:

Liberty Global has launched its Horizon TV product in the Netherlands, with Switzerland to follow next quarter and Germany and Ireland next year.

The Horizon box, made by Samsung with a user interface provided by NDS, includes 1024MB of RAM, 256MB of Flash memory, six DVB-C tuners and a 500GB hard disk.

The box is based on an Intel PUMA core and includes two WiFi chips – one for LAN connectivity and another provided by Celeno to deliver HD content through the home. The box connects via 802.11-based wireless in 2.4GHz and 5GHz and also includes a MOCA 1.1 capability for in-home coax.

Introducing the product at IBC in Amsterdam, Liberty Global executive vice-president and chief technology officer Balan Nair said that the company was also launching Horizon.tv, a browser-based application that allows users to access content on Horizon on other devices over the web. He also said that Liberty Global would launch a companion box next year for multi-room delivery of the service over WiFi.

The Horizon STB is way more advanced than the current incarnation of Sky+HD I'm pretty sure its a far higher spec too , that said some of the underlying technology is the same. I believe Horizon uses NDS MediaHighway middleware which Sky also use. Its worth mentioning that NDS is now owned by Cisco and the Horizon box has 5 or 6 tuners doesn't it and also uses the Snowflake EPG.
