Mmmm had this for years on freesat in HD and never watched it :erm::monkey::erm:
In Japan this channel is broadcast in 4k,I bet that won't be coming to virgin anytime soon.

There's more chance of getting that than Virgin getting Sky Atlantic HD :D :erm:

I think it's a great strategy by Virgin. BT are set to launch their new TV service in the summer. The more HD and niche channels Virgin add, the bigger the gap becomes between what BT will offer and what you can get from Virgin.

But BT have done deals for several 'XL' channels. I don't think the gap will be as big as people think.

A lot of the channels they have added this year are fta, the broadcasters where probably begging VM to carry them.

Can someone please explain to me why we are always getting new channels with the Zing and Zee background.

We have a French channel (dont know why ) then we have the Asain channels etc, then we have the stupid channels ie Africa Channel. But when customers want certain channels, we are kept waiting.

I can never understand that customers are crying out for channels ie Premier Sports and Atlantic the answer is a blatant no.

Possibly because there are some French, Asian and African people living in the UK who may appreciate those channels. Just a thought like.

Probably because the French channel, the Asian channels etc don't cost what Premier Sports or Sky Atlantic would cost to carry. If VM could get you Sky Atlantic, they would. It'd probably increase the price of your package though.

Good to see you consider anything that's not aimed at you is stupid. Or is it just because they're for "foreigners"?

There are also some Scots/Irish and Welsh people here in the UK, but we dont see those channels do we.

I live near Twickenham and would love to see some Scottish channels, as my wife is comes from Glasgow, we cannot see STV, but l can see FRENCH TV. See my point.

You do realise STV at this point is basically just ITV with different news and no English football.

If you want nationwide Scottish TV watch BBC Alba.

That's one for you to take up with ITV & STV, they have regional advertising and don't want other ITV Network regions available. There's nothing that VM can do about that.

TV5Monde is TV5 World, it's not a French TV channels as such, more a channel carrying programmes for French speaking citizens living outside France, Belgium, Switzerland etc.

What l am trying to say is that l believe that IF there are these channels out there, such as l can obtain channels outside London, on Freesat by adding in the signal that carried say CHANNEL ISLAND TV, So l cannot understand why VM cannot have this channel basis. I know it may sound stupid, but when l go to Great Yarmouth each year and wanted to watched what was happening in London, l couldn't as Norfolk has Anglia TV, and you can only get that on Sky NOT VM.

Is S4C not a Welsh channel which broadcasts with Welsh as the primary language? Or would be that classed as foreign to you? As for SA VM are still trying to get a deal which allow everyone the channel. Secondly, whilst I do not watch a lot of The Africa Channel etc, I enjoy being able to have the option to watch some of the varied and enlightening content they offer. It is odd though, that you were willing to join Sky which also have the same channels you begrudge VM attaining, plus many other "foreign"/"pointless" channels. :erm::confused:

So you are fed up when you can't see what is going on in London, but you begrudge people from countries having access to stations which will allow them to keep up-to-date with news and/or programs from their homelands? Seems rather unfair to me.

Why would you want Channel Island TV? Surely that is equally as rubbish as the Africa Channel.

If you go again, BBC1 London is available on channel 861 and ITV London on 853.

I agree that, now we have the extra capacity, that some more regional variations would be useful.

Alas, I doubt we will see any more ITV additions because of the desire to target advertising. ITV try to discourage viewers from watching a different region to the one intended for their area by not putting them on the Sky EPG. As they have stopped encrypting their satellite broadcasts, however, viewers can get round this by adding it to "other channels". I believe that they are available on Freesat by not being truthful about the correct postcode.

We only get ITV London and another selected region depending on the area you are in because of the need for Audio descripton and HD feeds.

Simple, it's up to the ITV Network to decide who gets what and they want the audience to get the region they where are selling advertising time.

This isn't rocket science, the other regions aren't easily available on satellite either. Other ITV regions aren't given channel numbers in the Sky EPG but can be received as "other channels" by anyone with sufficient technical knowledge. Similarly, they don't have channel numbers in the freesat EPG.

It's not going to happen.

STV's agreements for broadcasting with ITV simply do not allow Virgin Media to have STV in England.

In Wales ITV HD carries the news from ITV Central.

However ITV conditions of contract with VM is that they will only carry the feeds for the regions they serve. So STV won't be shown in London etc etc.

With the dawn of IP TV this may change.

Why don't they have these very niche channels available as a seperate foreign language pack costing £2 a month to people that want them and concentrate on securing what the majority of people want to see. Like i keep stating, most of these channels can be picked up on freesat, for a one of payment of £80 including dish installation, VM don't really need to provide them, the demand must be miniscule.

Instead of getting people to pay extra for niche channels, why don't they add Premier Sports and Sky Atlantic as two addon packages and let people who want them pay extra

People can't always receive Freesat for the same reason as not being able to have Sky i.e. you need a dish and a clear view of the sky

Some people are not allowed dishes on their rental properties. I would doubt the number of people who watch the channels are miniscule, the station owners/advertisers would not have expanded them out to VM if they were not in demand.
Other than the odd program on Sky 1 (previously fringe, the take, and mad dogs when it is shown) and the odd show on both Sky Arts channels, I don't watch the Sky basics. Lets charge extra for those, VM could charge a much higher price for them. Lets face, VM continued as a company when they lost the channels. (and yes, they would continue as a company if they lost the foreign speaking channels too)
Honestly, what will some moan about when we eventually get Sky Atlantic. We all know VM are trying to get it, like every other network. Unfortunately there seems to be something stopping it from coming to all other networks. As for the missing HD sports, we should be grateful we get SS 1 and 2 in HD. The only reason we get those is because Offcom forced Sky to give us them. It is highly unlikely we will ever get the rest.
Finally please tell me, other than SA, what is missing from VM that the majority of people desperately want?

I doubt Sky will let them, or they want a set amount no matter how many subscribers which would make pricing it difficult.

You did used to have to pay £1 a month extra for Sky 1 for a while in the NTL days. However I seem to remember when this was suggested again when VM lost Sky Basics they said Sky wouldn't let them have it as a standalone package.

How are they 'on the back foot'?

Their YouView service hasn't even started yet, and you know that BT Sports will be cheaper to watch on that platform. I doubt if BT are too worried about the additional channels VM are launching when they've done several deals to launch channels on their own platform. If TalkTalk are any indication then BT could do a triple-play YouView package for a very attractive price.

BT Sports might well be cheaper on YouView when it starts but overall its still a poor substitute thus when compared to what Sky and Virgin offer on their platforms on a overall basis plus you also have the scenario of a increasing bust up between Sky and BT Sports because where it stands there is no chance of a deal on the looming horizon between the two and BT without Sky Sports is a no no for many customers in my humble opinion.

Already losing ground to the established platforms, most unforgivably they're also losing ground to the only other operator on the same platform.

Not a legitimate reason, though. The likes of n power and British Gas both supply the exact same products (ie gas and electricity) and they access their products from the same source in exactly the same way. They distinguish their companies from other companies through pricing and customer service.

Similarly, it should be possible for Virgin Media to offer the same channels as Sky, should it wish to do so (or at least the same content).

Sky is attempting to suffocate the development of its competitors. OFCOM and the Competition Commission should be far more proactive in protecting the interests of the customer.

However business is business. Sky is allowed exclusives just as BT, VM and FreeSat are if they want to.

Remember if VM wanted to own content then they could have kept their channels and stopped Sky from having them. They chose to go where the money is. ie: broadband and an ip network, which Sky doesn't have and which could make VM a lot of money in the future.

When you look at Skys lineup there isn't much there that is missing on VM of any quality IMHO.

We know that Sky are allowed to do it HP, but the fact is that the law of the land shouldn't allow them to do it. How is this good for the customer? To get what we want, we have to subscribe to Sky and Virgin. Ridiculous!

The content we are missing is SA content. Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Blue Bloods, Treme.... need I go on?

You didn't mind when Virginmedia refused to allow Sky to use its network for ondemand, you didn't mind when Sky was stuck with ADSL services and its average speeds was 3Mb and Virginmedia refused to let Sky use its broadband network (in fact you actually gloated about it).

You don't mind Virginmedia have EXCLUSIVITY on Film 4HD, oh dear boy you are so one sided. Whilst some were complaining an trying to throttle innovation, others were busy innovating an now its paying off.

There has never been a one sided view from me dear chap as l speak as l see it and l have praised and criticised Virgin Media and Sky in equal measure before and will continue to do so in future and please remember Virgin do actually allow Sky access to their network as Virgin have just signed a five-year deal to provide Sky Broadband with network backhaul (between exchanges and the wider internet) so perhaps is now the time for Sky to provide VM with access to Sky Atlantic and those missing HD Sports channels to show actually that they have changed their spots

This might help Harry.

In a hierarchical telecommunications network the backhaul portion of the network comprises the intermediate links between the core network, or backbone network and the small subnetworks at the "edge" of the entire hierarchical network.

In contracts pertaining to such networks, backhaul is the obligation to carry packets to and from that global network.

Didn't Sky buy out Wannado in order to supply the internet to their customers? I'd have thought that would still have sufficient infrastructure.

Perhaps they now need extra capacity or more up to date equipment, or with the passage of time it is now cheaper to do it via VM

There's way to much Sky Atlantic discussion in this thread considering it's not even a channel that's coming soon...

But there will always be plenty of speculation. I'm not bothered about Sky Atlantic myself but I truly hope that those who have waited a long time for it will one day get their wish :)

Sorry, the only definate information I had concerned Zee Cafe and Zing. However, it does appear that, with some channels being downgraded to lower packs, the TV XL package is now being used to house the "added extras" for channels eg timeshift channels, the HD variants and some minority channels.

This strategy allows most customers to keep their channels and pay less by cutting out the "bells and whistles".

A wise move in the current economic climate.

But there is nothing else. Premier Sports refuse to be a subscription channel and Sky Atlantic is too costly.

We're getting Animal Planet HD, we're supposedly getting Universal HD & E! HD, we're getting TLC at launch.

Other than Food Network & Travel Channel I honestly can't think of any worthwhile channels we don't have.

Spot on Jamesh, it really is just the odd HD variant that will be missing soon, but I guess that wont be enough either. With BT looking very unlikely to be bundled in with XL, I would be surprised if we do not see Premier Sports come in for it. (that obviously depends on how much these extra HD have cost ultimately)

Oddly, when added early this morning, TLC and TLC+1 had programmes listed on the EPG, whilst showing a generic "coming soon" slate.

TLC HD, however, stated "coming soon" on the EPG, but was showing programmes (or a promo).

Is this the same TLC that we had many years ago, that has been dumbed down over time, or a completely new channel?

I believe it is a completely new channel from 'The Learning Channel' of many moons ago - broadcasts start at 8pm this evening

Indeed, VM does seem to be having some difficulty in releasing the "coming soon" HD channels from Sky exclusivity.

It wasn't a criticism of you MB, more a criticism of VM not wanting the details released until after the event.

The problem here is that someone at VM must have released the information to the TV listings magazines, as they show Animal Planet HD on channel 217 from today. So I'm guessing a last minute delay due to an exclusive deal with Sky still being active. It's quite possible that the deal will expire in the next few days and that the channel will arrive shortly.

The delay to the ITV HD channels was supposedly technical as it is a fairly complex process to take an MPEG4 source from satellite, un-encrypt it, convert it to MPEG2, re-encrypt and distribute it to all of the headends. Fair enough in the case of the ITV channels, but you would have thought they would now be prepared for such problems and would have planned ahead.

I'm just guessing but I would have thought it would have been sensible to add the Animal Planet HD channel at the same time as the new Discovery channels. Perhaps that's what VM and Discovery had wanted but if the exclusive deal with Sky still has a short time to run, it wouldn't surprise me if Sky threw a last minute spanner in the works.
