Left it installing overnight on "gathering info", until it failed. Then I realised AVG was stopping it. Suspended AVG and it installed fine.

Always best to uninstall any antivirus and disable a software firewall when upgrading windows, i certainly wouldn't leave the install unattended though, which is why i will do it tomorrow when i am not working.

OK may sound silly were do I get the 8.1 from?

I did a windows update and it didn't show there.

will it require me to enter a product key, as this machine was preinstalled and I don't have it.

I accessed it via the Microsoft site which launched the store, and I downloaded from there.

I'm currently on gathering data.

When you go in the store you should see a box that mentions 8.1. It was the first tile I saw when I went to upgrade.

From Sys Info:

6.3.9600.16408

Let me know the reg key and and I'll double confirm that version number.

that is interesting the build number in the link earlier was 16384

if you do not mind try the AIDA64 software ( it is safe) this will give the date the RTM was 130821 or 21st August 2013

cheers dude that will do :) has not got the build date but it does show a change . Will have to check make sure it is different on mine

As it turns out the previous link was wrong and the RTM was really the RTM after all built 21st August . So there was no need to wait lol

Does it ask for a win 8 key when doing an upgrade from the store?

I will install this in the morning, i will happy to be able to boot to the desktop and have the start screen set to Apps view so essentially making it similar to the old start menu, hopefully i wont run into any issue with the upgrade.

I don't know if this is a Windows 8 issue or just an IE11 thing but when I do a Google search all the results are squashed over to the far left (see pic). It doesn't happen in Firefox and Google seems to be the only page so far this happens on.

I still cannot get my Asus USB-N53 to find my 5GHz network.

I've reinstalled it, I tried to change to the 32-bit drives (so I could reinstall the 64-bit) but it wouldn't have it.

I've even been in the same room as the router (Asus RT-N66U) but no joy.

Unfortunately upgrading an OS over an OS is fraught with problems. Some will go smoothly and some will not always the case

I used the ISO in August and used the telephone method to activate my key. Clean install perfect except for downloading of NZB sites

Don't bother. Only just getting all my apps back onto my laptop after having to reinstall it. I always turn off System Restore, but have left it on now.

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion

All installed now and have reinstalled Avast beta and Comodo, no issues at all, extremely pleased it went so smoothly as always. :)

The whole install process at a guess probably only took 30mins or so and all my apps got carried over without issue, all in all very very easy installation.

EDIT

Where is the option to boot directly to the desktop?

---------- Post added at 11:19 ---------- Previous post was at 11:00 ----------

I found it, so i am well happy i can boot to the desktop and i love the start screen now you can set it to 'apps view' all the time and use my desktop wallpaper for its background, so please that i got Windows 8 for £25 last year as it now costs £190 and that is without media centre lol.

I have no reason to install a replacement start menu now as i think it all looks great. :)

I tried this earlier and it worked fine but just tried again and mine does it too.

Luckily though i hate IE so always use Chrome so it won't be an issue as the blurred fonts in IE do my head in.

Edit

It appears to be a Google webpage issue as the search works fine in Bing.com and Yahoo.

All the settings are in the Modern UI now I think but you can still access your SkyDrive folder from Windows Explorer, I checked to make sure it's still syncing if you change files from there and it worked

Microsoft gives a start button and taskbar with one hand, and takes away the reset feature in the other. Balance is once again restored to a ying/yang state.

Actually it is. Just can't reset the image if you made it in v8 and are now running 8.1, it won't let you. Guess you have to make a new one for the new version. Didn't read the whole article, don't use windows 8 here so only a glancing interest :)

I think I'm not the only one, others cannot find their 5GHz network

And just to add to this.

I am not brave enough to try it yet as i don't want to mess things up here, and also not sure if it works with an upgrade version of Windows 8.

I have misplaced my disc for my USB Samsung Blu-Ray player, and I cannot play BRs on the installed Cyberlink DVD player.

Until then can anybody recommend a free player that supports BR?

The 8.1 upgrade has been pulled apparently, due to it bricking some of MS's Surface tablet thingys

it has certainly been shown to be a proper screw up all round. Remember the XP sp1 rollout? broke more pcs than it upgraded on lol

Is it not just the RT 8.1 upgrade that has been pulled? I can't check properly while at work.

I'd be interested what percentage of regular computers it has broken?

True, consumers have the choice not to upgrade at all. However, with the minor tweaks needed on the original Windows 8 install to make it look like earlier versions was running perfectly fine for me. I only installed the 8.1 upgrade as someone told me it was mandatory to upgrade. Well, I will now wait before trying to install that upgrade again.

I must be one of the very few people happy with the upgrade

The only thing that doesn't work is my Kaspersky Pure but that's their issue, not that of 8.1.

The way Metro works now is much better - I would have preferred a proper start button but if this is what we're given it works well here.

Well I've had a %50 success rate with the update. But even on the laptop I soreted it out in the end.

I like my tiles though and wouldn't want to loose them ;)

Hom3r 21-10-2013 16:09

Other than my WiFi issue I'be not had any problems.

I did discover that it had removed my av, but I just reinstalled it

Not one of these is it?

If you get stuck let me know and I'll copy my disc for you and send it in the post.

I'd also say that users never do either by jumping on the relentless "upgrade" escalator when their computer is running fine on an older OS and end up destroying their setups and data. Then having to learn a new UI and where M$ have hidden the settings this time.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If we all had that thought we would be all on Windows 3.1 still. ;)

Personally Windows 8.1 is an improvement over the awesome Windows 7 and for £25 i would have been an idiot to have turned it down.
