All I know is UKTV are set to launch Ailbi HD in July 2012 on both Virgin Media and Sky.

I think Virgin will put Ailbi HD on Virgin Channel 131 with Ailbi +1 moving to Channel 193 or 194 (I forgot where Sony TV is)

I want HD channels really more HD content, I dislike watching SD now. But to be fair I don't have to watch SD very often.

I guess the channels I really want were not very likely to get soon if ever. Sky Atlantic HD, Sky Sports 3 & 4 HD. But I'd like to see the missing ITV HD channels appear this year.

Surely there can't be just me who isn't really that bothered if something's not in HD?!

If I have the choice I will record something in HD but I really don't care if it's not. If you see what I mean :)

For example, I would have missed two seasons of the brilliant "Rizzolli & Isles" and also "Covert Affairs" if I had insisted on only watching things in HD. (Of course, now WatchHD has started showing the latter from the start! If only it had been the other way round :(

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

It's not simply the visual aspect of HD Carl. All SD broadcasts are in 2 channel stereo. If you have a home theatre setup, even a lowly Panasonic 5.1 such as ours, then the aural experience is a great deal different. Although not all HD output is surround the 2.1 Dolby AC3 is richer.

I know what you mean, but it really bothers me when it comes to football and other sports, because imo HD brings out the best in sports, especially the football, and because we haven't got Sky Sports 3/4 in HD then thats a big letdown for me.

Did anybody noticed the advert in yesterdays Metro?. In the 'Collections' advert there was a tv with an 'Angry Birds' game on it. Could this mean there could be proper games coming soon?

I say this because my son can play it on our Roku media streamer http://www.roku.com/uk which had me wondering if it was coming to Virgin on Tivo.

You can add me to this group as well.

As I have a recording box, I feel the same about the +1 channels.

I'd much prefer a single additional channel with new content to half a dozen "new" HD/+1 channels.

UKTV strikes deal to air 350 hours of C4 content.

Quote:

UKTV is to take over from Discovery as Channel 4’s secondary rights partner for factual and lifestyle content, after signing a 350-hour deal.

The multi-year, multi-million pound agreement for programmes made by 16 indies will see the likes of Embarrassing Bodies, One Born Every Minute, A Place in the Sun and River Cottage air across UKTV’s portfolio of pay and free-to-air channels for the first time.

Home, Good Food, Really and Yesterday are being lined up as homes for the bulk of the shows in what is billed by commercial executive director Keith Porritt as a clear sign that UKTV is “coming of age again”.

Maybe now Discovery will axe Discovery Travel and Living.

And with Tivo, you don't have to spend time keeping an eye out for if and which channel they may end up on; just add them to a whishlist and job done. I did that with last years new US shows and it worked a treat.

Yes, as with HD - some like, some don't. I tend to watch rather than record (why I prefer V+ to TiVo, reminders and Red Button are important to me).

All such things have to be with regard to personal benefit.

On the 1st June, some music channels are moving packages:

Magic (340) going from L Pack to M+ Pack

Kiss (336) - L Pack > M+ Pack

The Box (335) - XL Pack > M+ Pack

Kerrang! (342) - XL Pack > L Pack

Smash Hits (337) - XL Pack > L Pack

jobbie8 18-05-2012 12:22

How come customers on lower packages get more channels whilst XL package gets de-valued?

XL customers got the likes of Eden HD, Good Food HD, Watch HD, Dave HD, SKY Arts 1 HD, SKY Arts 2 HD plus plenty of On Demand content last year which M+ and L customers didn't. The XL package was strengthened at no extra cost to its customers. Virgin added plenty of value to XL last year.

I don't have a problem with a few channels dropping into M+ and L. These customers need new channels from time to time, just like us guys on XL and VIP.

The 5 channels dropping down in package don't exactly attract major viewing figures.

Let's see what Virgin add to XL in the coming months to add more value. We know Alibi HD is on it's way, which is a start.

Great news, wanted Kerrang for a while but couldn't justify £20 more a month to go up to XL TV. £7 is slightly better.

I think VM really need a package between L and XL now. That has all the channels that XL has but without HD and ESPN.

It seems to me that Virgin are beefing up the M+ pack now that digital terrestrial conversion is reaching conclusion, with the London area just converted they may be trying to pre-empt customers who may cancel M+ and go to Freeview.

You could be right. Virgin has some really good M+ deals with TiVo all at half price for 6 months for new customers. With Euro 2012, Wimbledon and The Olympics all around the corner now is a great time for non-pay TV customers to join Virgin, to enjoy a summer of sport in HD, with 3 tuners to help catch all the action.

I think that Carl's reference was with regard to HD channels. I may be wrong, however the post would seem apropos saving money by going down to L. I'm on XL so I wouldn't know.

In my opinion, no. The V+ is noticeably better than TiVo at up-scaling.

That is correct, Jem.

As I have said before, I'm not that bothered if something isn't in HD but I prefer it if there's a choice :)

Actually a while back I did a test with a TiVo and a Samsung V+ connected to the same TV with identical settings on both HDMI inputs and the TiVo (since the 15.2 update fixed the interlacing problem) actually upscales slightly better than the Samsung V+ box.

Channel 4's 4seven catch-up channel to launch on July 4
Channel 4's bold new channel aimed at reinventing catch-up television will launch on all the main UK digital television platforms on July 4, it has been confirmed.

The channel will launch across all major television platforms on July 4, Channel 4 has confirmed. Channel numbers for Virgin Media and Freesat are not yet known, but it is thought that 4seven will launch at channel 47 on Freeview in post-digital switchover areas, and replace More4 +2 on Sky at position 269 on the EPG.

As programme schedules are "locked in" two weeks before broadcast, how the heck are they going to be be able to produce such schedules for this channel? You're simply not going to know if the programme you want will be made available on it. Nice idea, but not really workable, in my opinion.

Surely broadcasters can put out what they like when they like?

If so, its, in our case Virgins "problem" that they work two weeks ahead.
Perhaps look on line

FWIW my comparison was with my SA V+ box and my TiVo. I've never had the opportunity to compare TiVo with the Samsung box.

Yes but the way it is done, and has been done forever so far, is how I described it.

That won't help my Tivo set itself up correctly, will it ;)

There may be an argument that "the way it's been done" really should change to a more up-to-date way but this simply cannot happen whilst paper-based TV listings magazines are still selling well.

VM could buy all the TV magazines and make thousands of people redundant? Oh no, not really a sensible proposition and/or argument.

As with all things they evolve. The statement still holds good its Virgin/Tivos problem. They need to stop playing catch up & get ahead of the game. For the life of me I cannot remember what the EPG is called that responds to this:confused:
However that said, its not something I will lose sleep over :D

Right. And what about Sky+ and the other EPGs out there? It's not one rule for them and another for VM. NO-ONE currently gets finalised schedules more than two weeks in advance.

Quote:

You are referring, of course, to a dynamic EPG and VM's lack of one is a possible further problem but, as I am mainly thinking about those people who don't buy a newspaper, don't look on-line and don't own a DVR. How are they supposed to get to know the schedule?

This new channel will only have it's schedule decided the week before broadcast. So how can it be listed in the current crop of paper-based TV listings magazines?

True. But that would mean having WLs for all C4 programmes as opposed to a SL. Meaning more work for the customer/consumer/end-user. Not ideal :)

What I meant was that if someone is interested in watching a show then it would be on their WL already and as this channel only shows old shows this shouldn't mean any extra work fot the user.

Not really. They should have it Series Linked. WLs are for things like specific genres of film, or specific actors. 99% of my recordings are done by SLs.

You can't set a SL for shows that aren't on the EPG yet, i.e. new shows that aren't due to air until several months in the future. For me, that is the massive draw of Whishlists, but I also use them for the things you mention as well.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

I can't honestly see me having much use for 4 seven. It seems as though they're basically going to fill it full of the preceding week's most popular shows from across it's channel range. I would have preferred they stuck with their current channel line up but cut out all the dross. Given that they have the ability to drive buzz on social media, for example by suggesting hashtags on some programmes, I reckon we'll find the line up entirely predictable, and probably inclusive of those that attract the highest advertising revenues.

Sorry, I have to be honest and say I don't understand your logic.

As a previous user of Tivo, if there is a show that I know I want to watch and that has already aired (and the whole point of this channel is to rerun previously shown shows) then I would set a WL that would ensure that Tivo captures that show.

I think Carl has a point. In the scenario you've laid out you're going to have less than a week to discover that something you fancy has been on, and then set a wishlist for it. Unless what is on this new channel differs significantly from what's available on 4 od then seriously, what's the point?

Not everyone has 4oD.

To answer an earlier point, TiVo will cope fine with the schedule not being published two weeks in advance. It's normal for some channels to not publish the full two weeks.

Al Jazeera's push into French sports broadcasting is getting underway. Their new channel bein Sport HD1 is now testing in the clear on 13 east with both french and english audio available. Be interesting to see if the French market is enough for them for now, or if they will make a play for a Premier league package.

bein Sport HD1 are broadcasting the Catalan Dragons v Wigan Warriors Superleague game in Montpelier on 9th June. We should see, at least, highlights of that on Sky Sports.

My point wasn't that you set up a wishlist instead of a series link. My point was that for the shows that Tivo users really wanted to watch, they would already have set up a wishlist.

Edit: I read you post above re 7 day catch up and see your point. I thought this channel would rerun whole series of old shows (where WL would work) but it seems like this is just a catch up of episodes channel for which I see your and Carls point re WL.
