Sky 3D audience growing, new channel hinted

Quote:

Sky is looking at the possibility of splitting its Sky 3D channel in two, creating a dedicated Sky Sports 3D channel in the process.

Both Simon Rexworthy, controller of acquisitions at Sky Movies, and Ian Lewis, director of Sky Movies, separately confirmed the move to Pocket-lint at a recent behind-closed-doors event in London.

Although neither man would say when such a channel might be created, both hinted that Sky 3D could be split within the next 12 months.

The reasoning behind the possible decision - which is far from certain to happen - is to allow Sky to show the growing amount of 3D content to which it now has access.

Really Mr Stokes l am surprised by you this morning in your assumption that us VM customers need a dynamic EPG as to be perfectly honest its low on many customers list of priorities of things they would like with regards to the TiVo box and although it would be nice at some future stage we can cope quite easily without it as the TiVo has many other considerable advantages in other areas over Sky's somewhat limited box.:)

Are you mad? I was out last night so I assume you can figure out what happened to my recording of the match? The TiVo EPG is costing upto £5 a month per box. Yet it cannot automatically update.

Explain to a Sky customer how advanced your EPG is, then sit there totally fed up as your football recording finishes 30 minutes early while your mate on his inferior sky EPG relaxes and enjoys the entire game.

I tell ya what this is sooooooo annoying I think its the nail in the coffin, as some of the people I was out with had Sky and we had all set it to record. An NO we couldn't watch the game whilst we were out as we were at a new retail product launch.

That's great you were in watching the game you were recording so were able to change the recording manually. Most people record programs they won't be at home to watch or are watching something else.

One of my friends last night was actually able to set the game to record whilst we were out via his phone. Why can't TiVo do that?

Sky: Second screen experience in front of TV key

Quote:

Sky*has told Pocket-lint that it sees tablets and smartphones as key in enhancing the viewing experience in front of the TV.

Ian Lewis, director of Sky Movies, told Pocket-lint that partnerships with companies such as Zeebox are all about "creating a full comprehensive second screen service", and that we should expect plenty more "second screen" offerings in the future.
Quote:

Lewis, however, warned that many aren't ready to start using their iPad or Android tablet in front of the television just yet.

"Most customers don't want to do anything, but some do," added Lewis.

Those that do could be in for a treat, with Sky looking at several ways to enhance the viewing experience when you are sitting on the sofa.

One such area hinted at by Lewis is providing additional information such as what shows actors and actresses have appeared in previously, or more on the story of the movie you are watching.

Movie fans probably already used the popular Internet Movie Database app, but Lewis implied Sky could create its own version for customers.

It would make sense if the broadcaster were to use the service's Electronic Programme Guide to show when other movies by key people in the film are showing elsewhere.

BSkyB posts profit of almost £1bn.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012...fit-almost-1bn

Quote:

BSkyB has delivered profits of almost £1bn in the nine months to the end of March, fuelled by £31m that Rupert Murdoch was forced to pay out after News Corporation failed to take full control of the satellite broadcaster.

BSkyB, which grew revenue by 5% year-on-year in the nine-month period, has reported a 25% surge in operating profit to £939m.

The company said that the performance, which far outstripped the £752m it made in the same period to March 2011, was fuelled by the £31m break free News Corporation paid after having to drop its bid for the 60.1% of BSkyB it did not already own in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal that has engulfed the company.

BSkyB, which reported a healthy 27% increase in pre-tax profits for the nine months to the end of March, added 78,000 new customers in the first quarter 2012 to take its total customer base to 10.55 million.

"In what remains a tough economic environment, strong and consistent execution of our plan has delivered good growth across our product range," said Jeremy Darroch, chief executive of BSkyB.
Quote:

In the first quarter of the year BSkyB added just 15,000 TV customers in the first quarter to take its total to 10.23 million.

The company signed up 159,000 customers to its high-definition TV service, taking the total base to 4.2 million.

BSkyB managed to add 212,000 broadband customers taking the total to 3.86 million and 220,000 to its telephony services taking the total to 3.6 million.

Just over 30% of Sky customers took a triple play of TV, broadband and telephony from BSkyB as at 31 March, up from 26% in the year to the end of March 2011.

Average revenue per user, a key metric monitored by analysts grew by £9 year-on-year to £546m.

Analysts at Bank of America Merrill Lynch said that ARPU should have increased by £34 given increased number of products that BSkyB has sold to its customers.

BAML said that this implied "spin down" – meaning customers looking to take cheaper packages – and discounting by BSkyB to retain customers

Very true but their lack of new TV customers has to be a worry for them as the Tivo increasingly starts to make its mark in attracting new TV customers.

I'm not sure they will be that worried as they will probably start to hit the same problem mobilephone companys are having. Saturation- bassically everyone has a mobile-phone now so getting new customers is a struggle.

With 10.5 million customers on Sky,VM have 5 million, BT Vision has a million or 2 an so on. The days of massive quarterly growth may well be over for Sky.

But the results are good I would say.

The company signed up 159,000 customers to its high-definition TV service, taking the total base to 4.2 million.

BSkyB managed to add 212,000 broadband customers taking the total to 3.86 million and 220,000 to its telephony services taking the total to 3.6 million.

Well one of those problems on the horizon willl be a 'fit and proper' test to see whether it should keep its UK licence.

Thats no surprise as Sky have been using a large amount of discounting to keep customers.

Quote:

BAML said that this implied "spin down" – meaning customers looking to take cheaper packages – and discounting by BSkyB to retain customers.

Darroch rejected the idea that customers were shying away from pricey TV packages, although he did admit that there was less viewing of pay-per-content such as Sky Movies premieres year-on-year.

He said the market was promotional, meaning that Sky was having to offer cheaper introductory offers to snare customers, and added that over a three- or four-year period, the company's ARPU growth was fine

The 1st quarter results of 2012 are in for Virgin Media, and the TiVoizlation of the Digital Cable Network continues, with 677,000 subscriptions to TiVo, up by 242,000 from the previous quarter. 18% of Virgin's TV customer base now has TiVo, and that number will only increase thanks to the new Collections packs which all feature TiVo.

So you really think there is any chance at all of Sky losing its broadcast licence and putting thousands of UK workers out of work and forcing 10 Million consumers to lose there TV service? REALLY? Not a chance...

Its Tom Watson who has mentioned the "unfit" thing not Ofcom and its only about Murdoch being a major share holder. Worst case senario is Murdoch sells all his shares in BskyB.

BskyB is a big successful company run by a board of directors that has just made a record £1billion pound profit. Companys making £1 billion profit in 12 months do not get shut down.

Getting the Murdochs out of Sky and out of our country is a good thing though.

As per their facebook page, the Sony Movie Channel is to be FTV.

...looks like Sky are putting them on the one year probationary period to see what the ratings are like, before giving them a cut of the subscription money.

I've got to say I was surprised how little space the Anytime+ content was taking up. Although I've also noticed that the Anytime+ content is better quality than the broadcast material so I'm unsure why it takes up so little space.

Better encoding. Broadcast TV has to be encoded in real time, which limits how well it can be encoded. For VOD the encoder can do multiple passes to improve the compression and/or quality.

When I'm back home again I might try and find something I recorded in AT+ and download it to compare.

How do I report faults with AT+ content? S3ep2 of Sopranoes is corrupt.

You really can't fault them when it comes to content. :)

You take HD for granted , just watching ESPNA at parents on TIVO the PQ makes me glad ive got the channel in HD with Sky.

ESPNA is perfectly fine on my TiVo box so to be perfectly honest l suspect there is not much difference between that and ESPNA HD on Sky.:)

Trust me there is a big difference ;) the SD isn't that bad , I've seen worse but it certainly doesn't come close to the channel in HD.

Do Sky have a dedicated website for their Sky3D channel, similar to the Sky Atlantc site?

I assumed that they would have but can't seem to find it.

Also is there any 3D content on Anytime+?

Also, we will be looking to introduce 3D content within the showcase section of Anytime+. Due to the nature of this technology this is something we are looking to slowly introduce, again to enable us to ensure the content and quality of delivery is at a high level. The 3D content that we are able to broadcast through this feature is also restricted by the broadcast rights that are apparent. We appreciate that you are all looking to have more of this content shown. We are always looking to improve on our content where possible.

Whatever gave you that idea? :D

Well the missus was complaining about us needing a smaller TV, so I've used that as an excuse to give 3D a second chance. I was with VM the last time I had a 3DTV so now I've got Sky 3D there's much more content available.

I've got to say that I'm extremely impressed by the amount of 3D movies showing over the next few weeks, I've just added all the movies from the link above in to my basket on HMV and they come to whopping £275 if I bought the 3D blu rays!!

Two new comedies are headed to Sky Living HD, Gates and The Spa.

Quote:

The 5x30-minute comedy Gates stars Sue Johnston (The Royal Family), Tom Ellis (Miranda), Joanna Page (Gavin and Stacey) and Adam Deacon (Kidulthood). Ellis and Page play parents who moved to the South East, where their 9-year-old daughter is starting school. They soon discover what happens when your children choose your friends

The Spa is written by Derren Litten (Benidorm, The Catherine Tate Show). The comedy is set in a Hertfordshire spa that claims it can cure anyone—the fat, the thin, the lazy—but the truth is quite to the contrary.

It's not 100% known yet , it's linked to the new EPG which several of us on here are currently testing I'm led to believe , think they mentioned towards the end of the year.

Ofcom: Sky's Local TV proposals, Virgin Media and Freesat respond: Updated

Quote:

Discussions between Ofcom and Sky have taken place over where the proposed new Local TV stations will appear on the broadcaster’s EPG.

Currently, it’s proposed that Freeview Channel 8 will be the new home for local TV, bumping ITV2 off to elsewhere in the programme guide. Naturally you’d assume that Sky, Virgin Media and Freesat, whose guides begin with 101 for BBC One, would follow suit placing Local TV on Channel 108.

This however doesn’t look to be the case. Sky’s own flagship channel Sky1 occupies position 106 on the EPG. This is followed by Sky Living and Sky Atlantic, the latter of which would be relegated to page two of the guide. Sky Atlantic is home to HBO-owned shows such as Broadwalk Empire and Game of Thrones which Sky has aggressively promoted; moving any of these channels off of the front page will undoubtedly mean a ratings drop.

Sky 3D will broadcast Eurosport's live 3D feed from Centre Court at Roland Garros from May 28 to June 10. This is the third consecutive year that Eurosport has covered the French Open in 3D, but the first time that the feed has been made available live to UK homes.
