Hey, I actually like some of those. The Crystal Maze is a classic, and Takeshi's Castle is the precursor to Total Wipeout, the only difference being it doesn't completely suck. :D

Also, it's fun to watch the strongman contests and speculate exactly when the contestants will die of heart failure or hemorrhages from straining so hard to pull planes or whatever.

Just had an email letting me know that Sky anytime has NOW launched on VM... Absolutley no mention whatsoever of movies in HD, either now or in the future. Surley if this was going to happen they would be whistling about it.

A question on VM do you get the Sky Premiere movies delivered on Friday in the early hours ?

My son is addicted to some of them so shows if you wait long enough you can get a new generation enjoying these shows/competitions they have never seen!

Re: Sky Anytime

Unfortunately, with quiz shows, you tend to realise that you still don't know the correct answer 30 years on! :o:

I used to attend a pub quiz where the quiz master, Ron, cited Ron's rule. If he asked a question that he had used only a few weeks previously, Ron's rule stated that, if you didn't know the answer last time, you probably wouldn't know it this time either. It was true about 90% of the time. Once in a blue moon one team might get it right but it was rare and usually not because they remembered what the correct answer was but because they remembered the incorrect answer they gave last time and tried something else this time.

I watched a few episodes of Blockbusters recently and amazingly recognised all of the contestants and some of their antics, mascots etc. from the original airing of the shows in 1992.

A version of Blockbusters with adult contestants is coming to Challenge in 2012. This was previously tried by BBC Two for one season in 1997 and was hosted by Michael Aspel.

Back To The Future Part II, right? What Lorraine says to Biff? It's one of my favourite insults because it doesn't use bad language but is still offensive.

Agreed. It's a shame Challenge doesn't have Strike It Lucky, that was pretty campy and fun. Classic 80s theme tune.

The other problem is you answer correctly, but that answer doesn't apply to an episode made years ago because that person/event hadn't occured yet!

Now S7:Ep2 has gone missing altogether and the subsequent episodes haven't appeared yet either. Me too, but it doesn't mention Movies in Hd in any of Virgin's dialougue or web sites, not even a coming in the future, so i won't be holding my breath. To be honest the quality of sky movies in SD is poo and so are the Anytime streams as well, it's like watching VHS.

You know how people recently received pop-up messages suggesting Boardwalk Empire season 1 was available via on demand, just how did an error of that size happen? I never witnessed the pop-up myself but my wife did and mentioned it to me.

I'm sure this has already been addressed somewhere on this site, but I can't find what the outcome was. How can Virgin make an error advertising content they simply don't have? Or is it actually coming soon and someone let slip?

The main reason I left Sky was the fact that I had to pay them to repair (by which I mean swap out with a refurbished box, losing all of my recordings in the process) the poor equipment they supplied in order to continue to use their service.

I threatened to leave three times whilst I was a Sky customer and got free call outs. On the fourth occasion I threatened to leave and they told me I was free to go!!!

It cost me about £20 to replace the cheap components which made up the inside of the box and that's about what I got back when I sold it. Not entirely sure where the benefits of owning your stb are supposed to lie!

Will never go back.

Yeah, I was referring to Sky. The response I got here to my complaints about Bones and Lie to Me seemed to place the blame firmly with Sky. However, VM still have a responsibility to their customers and should be chasing this up.

You have too much going on in your life! :( You should be able to fit 24 episodes into a week and still have time to eat, sleep and watch a few other programmes. You're just not trying! :(

Hi everyone, was just wondering if the sky movies on demand available on virgin player are the same on the tivo box, looking through there does seem to be some discrepancies, anyone have any info?

The differences will be down to the rights clearances

thankyou, for that, but I would have thought there should be no difference

Well tell that to the content owners i.e. the Movie studios and TV channels as it is they that set where and how their content can be shown

So are you saying you get better choice on demand with a V+ box than a TiVO?

We're talking about the difference between the content via the TiVo and at www.virginmedia.com/player as far as I'm aware

TiVo and V+ should be the same other than iPlayer

Hi- am new to cable forums and to virgin media
Recently split with wife and temp back at dads in a tower block with 1 tv feed which ive decided to use for my sky+ in bedroom to record when am out and have joined virgin tivo
for the living room- Anyway, enough of me rabbiting on and back to topic,
Ive took the L pack on virgin and so looks like i wont be able to see sky anytime??
My sky hd box has been selected as 1 lnb feed so i lose anytime on that.
Will Virgin L tv pack be able to access sky anytime programmes via box or online, or is it only for xl customers?

From the press release http://mediacentre.virginmedia.com/S...line-21da.aspx

From early 2012 selected programmes from these channels will also be made available to M+ TV customers and above through Sky Anytime on Virgin Media

I must admit, I (mis-)interpreted the OP's question as being about a difference between the VM On Demand service on a V, V HD or V+ box and a TiVo box but, if he did mean the VM Player on the web, then I can understand why there might be differences based on rights issues.

However, essjay has now raised the question of why the BBC iPlayer is different on a TiVo from a standard box. Is the content different or just the presentation?

The contents different. An updated I player app on Tivo means more content than on the v+ box.

TiVo pulls its Iplayer content from the web version while the other STB boxes get fed by whatever gets uploaded to VM servers.

So do the web and TiVo versions always offer more? The original impression that I got was that the VM Player content on the web had tighter rights restrictions over those of the TV based On Demand content. Now it sounds more like the flawed upload process for On Demand content is what makes the difference, not rights issues. This would match my experience to date with the Sky Anytime On Demand content and may also now explain occasional missing content in BBC iPlayer.

roughly 950 hours of BBC programmes compared with roughly 350 hours of BBC programmes on Virgin Media legacy boxes.

Re: Sky Anytime

As far as I understand it the main reason in the difference for the iPlayer is mostly down to space and what the BBC convert for Virgin to put on On Demand rather than rights

People will know the reasons much better than me, but my experience with iPlayer on V+, whilst still very good, was that there was nowhere near the content that was available on the BBC's own iPlayer website. My experience with iPlayer on TiVo is that its much more comparable, and normally includes 4 or 5 pretty reasonable films as well as all the normal catch up stuff and other content. This app alone has really opened my eyes to some of the seriously good quality programming the BBC produces, particularly on BBC4.

In my opinion it is a real shame that iPlayer on TiVo has a bit of a PR problem because of some teething troubles but then as a still relatively new customer to Virgin, I'm beginning to learn that this is just their way. Like TiVo, like broadband through superhub, iPlayer on TiVo is an excellent product that wasn't right to begin with and now suffers from a bad press it no longer deserves, but for which it only has itself to blame.

More on topic, iPlayer on TiVo really demonstrates what the box is capable of and, if anything, further underlines how disappointing it is that more hasn't been made of this capability.

Is there a specific list online of the new movies that are being added every Friday to Sky Movies on Demand? I've found the list of all films available but for someone like me who doesn't really keep up with new films it's not easy to identify the premieres.

It would be nice if there was a "new" section in the Sky Movies on Demand menu when searching through my TV.

Re: Sky Anytime

I have to say that I have been put off using Sky Anytime in On Demand because of the unreliability with the few series that I have tried to follow on it. There have been missing episodes, episodes that came and went within a day or so and duplicated episodes.

It's even worse now that I find that there is a disparity between platforms with the BBC iPlayer content too. I felt sure I could rely on the consistency of this but have been surprised that some series on the on-line iPlayer are not available on the VM OD version.

Seemingly there are problems with the uploads from both the BBC and Sky but VM aren't taking an active interest in pursuing the selective uploading from the BBC and the failures in uploading from Sky.

I'm not entirely convinced that this is how the mechanism works. Do VM really store the programmes from the other broadcasters on their local hardware and expire them on the appointed date?

Never mind the quality, where's the content? If all of the SD content was there then HD would be a bonus so let's get the supply mechanism working first!

When will On Demand integrate with Explore This Show listings? So far only films seem to.

When upload fails are spotted, they are corrected. Depends where the fault happens, sometimes can be a local headend copy failure.

VM have rights for so many days for programmes/series, they do expire and have to be removed.

He got caught out registering a new account a few weeks ago on the official forums.
I said I wondered where Gerald had got to but seems he had popped up again as another account.
A Virgin employee asked if he was the same person and about a day later he seemed to be gone and all his 'new' posts also.
My comments pointing out it was him were also deleted!

Anyway to keep on topic......the missing HD and the still missing content compared to the real Sky version need sorting and once that happens it will be amazing

Oh i see. That makes sense.

I would be could as well if they could add old F1 races and maybe highlights of them on Sky Anytime as well when the actaul channels launches. It would be good to see some of the old great races again

Looking at the VM Sky Anytime offering it would appear that VM content is from Sky Anytime+ which has HD movies but nothing whatsoever now in the entertainment , the official line from Sky is over the coming months HD content will be added to Anytime+ starting with Sky One content. Sky customers get their HD content delivered via satellite (no downloading to be done) on Sky Anytime however I would also like to see HD added to Anytime+.

I noticed that some of the 3D content has been taken of over the last month with more to be removed this coming week. (ESPN X Games)

There will be nothing left at this rate unless new stuff gets added.

For the channels that Virgin Media carry (Sky1, Sky Living, Sky Arts, Sky News, Sky Movies & Sky Sports) ‘Sky Anytime On Virgin Media’ carries most of the programmes as the Sky Anytime and Sky Anytime+ service on the Sky Platform. There may be a very small number of exceptions owing to some rights clearances.
