Santos to fly in tomorrow ahead of a medical and signing a 4 year deal. Apparently hes solid defensively which goes against those saying he sucks but I'll reserve judgement until I've seen him play.

Eljero Elias on the radar, talks on going.

Eljero Elia has been on Dutch TV tonight admitting Arsenal and HSV are in talks and he'd prefer a move to England.

Apparently the Mertesacker deal is around £6/7 million. If true then it makes a mockery of Bolton's valuation of Cahill!

Not really. Players are always going to command a higher premium moving to clubs in the same league, don't ya think? Watching Sky Sports News this morning, it seems Arsene has hit "panic buy" - I don't think I have ever seen Arsenal do this.

There would be a premium but not that high. Bolton value Cahill at £17 million whereas this deal looks to be around £10 million. :erm: Nice bit of business there. I think Bolton overestimated the strength of their hand, as I mentioned previously there are many players of the Cahill class - Mertesacker being one - and he has one year left on his contract while Bolton are mired in debt. They better hope the deal fall through or Spurs/Liverpool match their valuation by the close of play tomorrow.

I don't think 'panic buy' is apt. The Korean striker has been in the workings since last week and we've been chasing a CB for a while now, if anything the insistence not to overpay for Cahill is an example of the club continuing to operate calmly and in character. Whereas the deal for the left-back Santos has also been on the cards as Traoré has just signed for QPR.

Which in my view is the only drawback. He is commanding, tall, excellent reading of the game and the direction of the ball and as a consequence of all that he is excellent at set-pieces. Not only that but is a pretty good and clean tackler.

Two CBs apparently incoming. I can see Wenger going over the quotes amount he stated in the press conference the only thing is Cahill should be having a medical!! Bolton will play hard ball but until when, the last minute or will they risk letting him leave for practicably nothing in January or as a free agent come end of the season.

Ok, maybe not quite panic buy, but it does seem Arsenal are being linked with everybody in a desperate attempt that something comes to fruition. Linked with Benayoun, but if I were an Arsenal fan, I'd be thinking "if he ain't good enough for Chelsea.."
As for Mertesacker's lack of pace, well they will pair him with probably the finest defender in the league in Vermaelen so shouldn't be a problem.
That Santos could be a good signing, experienced (well, compared to Jenkinson ) and apparently able to cope with the physical demands of Prem.

Yes I don't like Benayoun. However I think it's best to ignore rumours of signings until they seem more realistic.

I agree. He is big, strong and a quality defender. Great signing (if it happens). Also means we have Koscienly has pretty decent back up!

Mancini loves defensive players, he was annoyed after the Tottenham game because they conceded a goal. He's going all out this season. To be honest I'm not surprised he's signed him just for the sake of an extra body.

Another bid for Cahill from Arsenal has been rejected.

Mertesacker is leaving on a jetplane to London for a medical. I not sure about getting two center backs unless he wants to play Vermaelen (aka the Verminator) on the left....

I'd be incredibly annoyed if Tommy was to play left back which just kills off his talent!

Keep your mind open Damien, theres a lot of smoke around but it seems like more than what was quoted is incoming. I'm expecting 2 center backs. I just hope we don't go and buy Alex and then see Chelsea buy Cahill!

Chelsea can have Cahill at that price. He isn't a bad player at all but he isn't 'world class' so I am not too concerned if he ends up elsewhere as long as we have what we need. Alex would be further back up so if we got Mertesacker then Alex is more realistic can Cahill...

Indeed. I was just making the point because 1 flaw and the player is dubbed as a flop. We don't know how he'll do and any way, Squillaci looks as though he's on his way out so having this giant as depth isn't all bad.

He's a leader and an organiser as well as being a top notch centre back, just what the doctor ordered. I think this deal was going to happen regardless of the Utd result, he's been linked all summer and Chu was supposed to be signing for Lille, the deal was in place, price agreed and everything, they went to pick him up from his hotel only to find he'd left for London so I wouldn't abnk on Hazard siging this window...

To be honest Wenger was in a no win situation as soon as they decided to leave it this late. There is nothing that suggests panic in the players chosen, they have clearly been scouted for some time and they address specific weaknesses that critics have been pointing out all season. Mertesacker is exactly the player pundits have said Arsenal needed, now they are changing the narrative to dam Wenger for getting a 'cheap' player who isn't fast.

Don't think we need another center back. We now have Mertesacker, Vermaelen and Koscielny to choose from with Djourou as 4th choice center back. We have two full backs and cover for those full backs. I think that's enough depth in defence now.

We're probably getting another midfielder, although not sure we need another winger. We need a creative playmaker and maybe a holding defender.

Plus Miquel isn't half bad for a youngster but he needs loaning out. I still reckon we'll go back in for Cahill. A holding mid and creative as you say. I still feel we're short, it happens every season. Wenger goes in with way too much faith. He's got this thing where he wont stand tall against players, he massages their ego but he says he doesn't want to ruin their confidence. Someone needs to point out to him that players at Arsenal have been robbing the club for years now because of the lack of incoming transfers.

Chamakhs apparently going out on loan, time for a new striker. Wenger wanted Benzema before he quashed rumours so Arsenal must be looking to sign a top quality forward :D

Rumoured to be. To be honest if he stays I am happy with the forwards we have, we can always push Walcott up if we have a problem and Gervinho can play as an out an out forward.

All the more reason to sign a winger ;) Whats your thoughts on Yoann Gourcuff? Hes currently injuried and unhappy it seems at Lyon. Lyon also need to cut costs... I reckon we should take a punt with a reasonable offer for him. He can play across the midfield as well as on the wing. Hes got decent quality.. sign him Wenger! M'Vila deal is back on but their still holding out for 30mil.

Good riddance as he was a nobody when Liverpool signed him and is a nobody now.

First refusal. They get offered him if Lille decide to sell but other teams can still bid and Liverpool would have to match those offers and Lille's asking price. All it effectively means is they get a headstart.

The Hazard transfer request is fake. The Joe Cole > Liverpool first to Hazards probably fake too.

Well Twitter feeds are suggesting someone called Montolivo could be the one Arsenal are looking to sign.

Montolivos in the last year of his contract and Fiorentina doesn't want to deal with other Italian clubs. Could be a cheap coupe.. Juan Manuel Vargas at Fiorentina is being lined up too.

These rumours have been off and on for days. Time is running out and we have done nothing other than random players being mentioned on Twitter. It's absurd. We had ages to replace Nasri and Fabregas and a large amount of cash to do so - we should have gone after players like Hazard and cheap castaways from Chelsea or players at midtable Italian clubs. It's a joke.

Arsenal tried doing deals early on but other clubs come in and offered more money and blew us out the deal. That said theres been an issue with the final stages of contract deals since Dein left... in fact a year before Dein left. We had Ribery at the table, right infront of us and the arrogant board let him leave thinking their big boy status would win him over but it didn't and backfired with Bayern coming in and offering him mind blowing wages. We had a bloody deal there!! Anyway thats how they've been doing business for a while now which sucks and is incredibly outdated.

1715 DONE DEAL Looks like West Ham and Tottenham have been speaking to each other a lot today. It has just been confirmed that, as revealed by BBC sports news correspondent Dan Roan a couple of minutes ago, out-of-favour Spurs midfielder David Bentley has joined the Hammers on a season-long loan.
Quote:

1717: More from BBC Sport's Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta. McNulty says: "Everton's Mikel Arteta is emerging as the latest big-name target for Arsenal as they seek a midfield man to complete their signings. Word on Merseyside is no deal as yet - but Everton are vulnerable to a big offer and £10m may yet be enough. Will be a tense few hours for David Moyes if Arsenal press strongly."

Arteta has been independently mentioned by many reporters. A bid was probably made but will it be enough. Arteta is better than nobody, really wanted a bigger player like Hazard through.

I understand that should it happen then it's likely to be an England-based player. Arteta clearly falls into that category. Watch this six-hour space!"
