How dare they have a soft launch of a new interactive sport service :D

Indeed but I wonder why they have done so.

I am not imagining it but there really are 14 streams alive and kicking right now.

What are they showing?

There's loads of new hardware and software required to deliver SSRB, and although it has been well tested in labs, you can never be sure it will all work in real life. A soft launch minimises the impact if something does go wrong.

Imagine the fuss there would have been here if a big launch had been announced then it hadn't worked.

That's the way I see it, and why its being described as a "soft launch". Sky have never written a proper red button app for VM's platform so they're using it sporadically initially to see what works and what doesn't. Once they have any maor kinks ironed out it'll probably be used more frequently. I would imagine a similar thing will happen when they start to write the TiVo version of the app. Same with the BBC red button functionality - I think it will build up in small chunks, probably with alternate video streams being a priority as they seem to be what people are complaining about the most.

EDIT: And I see spiderplant has said pretty much the same a couple of posts up.

I think this is down to VM and it could be for any manner of reasons.

I doubt it's Ruperts fault this time. He has provided 15 HD channels AND red button in the last 12 months so the old chestnut of Sky witholding content is starting to wear a bit thin with me.

Yes we cannot blame Sky for eveything as sometimes we have to hold Virgin to account and ask them questions which half the time they don,t seem to answer or are very vague in their press releases and communication.

They show the main game on a linear channel at around 8.25, then at 10.15 match choice is available.

It must be down to rights that they start at 1015 as when I had BT they didn't make match choice available until around the same time (it was their own version though and nothing to do with Sky Sports, I don't think they have the rights to this anymore and it didn't include any games that had been shown live on Sky, games shown live on ESPN were available but not for a day or so, in fact I think these games are still available on BT but obviously they are a bit thin on the ground).

A bit of publicity wouldn't go a miss though but it's early days and it's obviously a pretty 'soft' launch. Maybe they are being cautious publicising red button events so not to rub Tivo customers noses in it.

Let's face it for such a genuinely major new service launching it was low key to say the least but it's launched which is the most important thing.

I'm really quite impressed at VM getting it. It isn't often I overly praise Virgin but I wouldn't underestimate it's importance. The sports offer wasn't good enough without it, in my opinion.

What Sky do to counteract it is anyones guess though, if and when News Corp get Sky I expect the gloves will be off once again, they seem to be being too nice for me (maybe to keep the regulators sweet)

I don't think if counts anymore

But August will be a better indicator in my view once TiVo launches Red Button services.

Because we are nearly at the end of the football season my belief this is a soft launch until it comes onto tivo and the football season restarts in August.

Football will NOT be on the Sky Sports Red Button until next season.

Info from Virgin Media.com

Quote:

We’re giving you more control with Sky Sports red button.
Soon it will be even easier to catch your team on telly, thanks to the Sky Sports red button.

If they’re not showing on the main channel, all you need to do is press the red button on your remote control, and Bob’s your uncle, you can scroll through all the games and select your side. It’ll work for all 2011-2012 Barclays Premier League matches, plus any UEFA Champions League match, ATP tennis, US Open, Heineken Cup and more. Plus, your clever red button unlocks loads of news and stats, too. And an extra bonus, from late spring you can use it to track down smaller sports events, games or highlights, too. Just keep an eye out for the red button appearing on your Sky Sports premium channels. Nice one!

There are 2 masters tennis events in may the madrid and rome masters but the madrid master is the only event to have red button facilities so it must be the tennis tomorrow.

Re: sky sports red button

I'm pretty sure you'll probably find that it's Sky who are coding the red button software. It's a "soft launch". In other words, they'll try out the software on the live system a bit at a time to see what works and what doesn't and then refine the software for the next event they test it on. Liberate is a completely different system to OpenTV (or whatever Sky are using these days) so everything has to be written from scratch to work within the capabilities of VM's system. From a software development and testing point of view they're doing things correctly; you develop and test the software in small, easily manageable stages rather than trying to do everything at once.

It was a similar situation back in the NTL/Telewest days with the BBC red button when they had to try to recreate similar functionality to the red button app on Sky on 3 different cable systems (Telewest, original NTL, ex-C&W). Those of us in the original NTL areas had to wait absolutely ages for various upgrades to hardware at NTL's end and software on the old Pace boxes before we got the same functionality as the Telewest and ex-C&W customers got.

I'm sure Sky will have received feedback from VM about how well the first trial worked both at VM's end and on the various STBs so that they can refine and optimise it for the next event, where the process will repeat until it's at a satisfactory level to be used full-time. Then they'll start working on getting it up and running on the TiVo boxes, although I'd hope that it'll be easier for them to code for Flash.

Why they couldn't have provided psuedo red button in the mean time is beyond me. i.e. football is on, press red button - overlay appears with basic list of what streams sky are broadcasting... fan zone... player cam.. etc, choose player cam, box retunes to a channel up the epg to show player cam, then returns back to sky sports + overlay on next press of red button. How hard would it have been to implement that system while they recoded it properley???

That wouldn't have been allowed by Sky, sorry. It is a phased rollout and that can't be changed.

It would be almost as hard as doing it properly. The STB doesn't know that "the football is on" or what streams are available at any particular time - someone needs to tell it. Also bear in mind VM has around 20 different STB models that need testing. That's a lot of testing on something you're going to throw away.

Doing what you suggest would be a major diversion from doing the job properly. Besides, it's nearly all done now anyway.

I think some of you might be expecting a bit too much from the service, things like player cam and camera angles are not provided anymore (or I should say I haven't seen such features in the near 2 months I have had Sky).

Basically during a live EPL match you get highlights (pretty poor PQ), stats and a choice of audio (i.e. no commentary).

Fanzone isn't available on all EPL games either, Scottish Football and Football League coverage has no red button at all (unless they throw extra games on behind the red button at the end of the season, there appear to be no 'interactive' features as such).

Overall it's very good and a great addition to VM but it's best feature is match choice and the UCL multiscreen, I think this is the main selling point for football fans as they provide actual content. A lot of the other features are OK but nothing more.

In my opinion.

I wouldn't rely on Sky's web site for info about what's coming soon to VM.

That page says there's 26 HD channels on VM and more 'may' launch soon. There's no 'may' about it, they have launched, I believe its actually 31 HD channels on Cable now.

That page says there's 26 HD channels on VM and more 'may' launch soon. There's no 'may' about it, they have launched, I believe its actually 31 HD channels on Cable now.

That webpage is many months old and has never been updated.

It has well done the rounds on here and DS.

Good it works, to be honest I often didn't get the red button icon on the BBC but it usually worked.

It is very good, especially for things like this that provide extra matches which is it's best point for me, stats and alternative audio are nice but the extra games are what I suspect customers really want. I will be interested to find out how V+ handles more than 4 video screens though.

BBC Multiscreen has never been able to display the full six miini screens, 2 of them have always been 'static' if that makes sense although you can still view the video streams.

It wouldn't be a major problem anyway, maybe that's what they are working on to provide the football match choice service as obviously there are more than 4 mini screens, usually there are at least 7.

It is visually almost identical to Sky's version except their red button merely says 'match choice' and there is a separate menu by pressing 'i' for stats and the draw (the options that VM have as 5 and 6 on their version).

Very good, i'm impressed.

It all looks pretty comprehensive to me.

It provides exactly the same services as Sky does, albeit in a slightly differening way.

Bodes well for the future when it fully launches.

I have Sky sports Red Button, however, both times I have used it I have had to reboot my Cisco VHD box as it froze all controls. After the reboot it works as it should.

I seem to recall I had a similar problem when BBC News Multiscreen launched in ex CWC areas after NGTV but it soon panned out and was mostly OK.

I am sure its just a teething problem, it looks really good.

I mostly had that problem when I had a V Box. I found if that box wasnt in standby when the EPG updated I had no choice but to reboot as the box simply locked up. Unlike the V+ i'm sure that box updated at 0600 so maybe the V HD box does too.

If I was awake and was using it the box always stuck for things like red button and needed rebooting just after 0600 for some reason, if it was in standby it was OK.

Sadly even us Sky punters don't even get it for all sports! Only EPL and UCL have it with the occasional La Liga match, Scottish and Football League matches are not covered let alone all other sports.

I am sure when it fully launches on VM you will get at least a comparable service to what Sky provided on their own platform when the deal was signed.

I have been with Telewest/Vm for about 15 years and I can honestly say the Cisco V HD box is the best I have ever had.

Cool, I found the V box great too with the exception of the reboot problem at 0600.
