Re: Football Season 2010/2011

Great result and display (especially first half) from Man City today :) To win 4-1 at Craven Cottage is a result for any team but the manner in which City played was the more pleasing. It looked like the players really wanted to prove something and they actually looked like a team, not just a group of expensive footballers!
Someone mentioned it in commentary and i think they may have a good point. Mancini realizes that the team aren`t quite ready to go toe to toe with the big guns in a footballing sense so opts for the difficult to beat approach in these games. Then against the lesser teams he plays a more expansive pressing game with the knowledge that the quality of the opposition is unlikely to cut them to pieces on the break.
Maybe all the arguments and negative press that have been abundant in the press recently have made the squad stronger as a unit (obvious individuals not included).
Hopefully this is the start of a run of form that will help secure a Champions League spot. :erm: Why did i just say that, i`ve been a City fan long enough to realize they never do things straightforward

Braga V Arsenal......

Sorry, but I have seen better games at Conference level.
Arsenal, or more than likely Wenger has got it all wrong, I almost fell asleep.
Edit: Braga have just gone 2 - 0 up, serves Arsenal right.

It was a boring game but they didn't get it all wrong. Getting it all wrong would mean Arsenal were being outplayed but that clearly wasn't the case. Instead the usual defensive failing and mental strength was lacking, it was a very poor game.

Re: Football Season 2010/2011

I think Arsenal's time will come in a season or two. Overall it's a very young squad but the potential is definitely there and with a bit more experience they'll surely be up there challenging for the premiership title.

Strange match last night with Rangers v Utd in that Rangers played, in the first half at least, like a team who were playing away and not needing a win to keep qualification in their control. Sooo defensive, it was strange to watch.

With anything Donkey does? Not a chance, he's had more than 2 years to prove himself.

My cynical nature says without his goals today we'd have still won 2-1. But seriously I'd rather he play (and score) consistently week-in week-out than have a blinder of a game once every 15 games.

Brilliant Performance and win from Barcelona. The scale of the win also means gives them a big advantage if they finish on equal on points.

Awful from Madrid. Made worse for their pathetic approach to the game, awful tackles and behavior from their players.

I`m glad this is the "Entertainment" section because what i watched last night was some of the most exciting football iv`e seen in a long time :)
The way the Barcelona players have confidence in one another, they still pass them the ball on the deck even if they have 3 opposing players around them, the general level of technical ability and movement from front to back is frightening, if they carry on playing like that they will be exceptionally hard to beat in the Champions League.

Why, why does Harry keep on choosing Crouch over Pav or Keane, he has only scored ONE goal in the premier league, l think that Bill Nicholson should come to WHL, and have a word in Harry's, Crouch if you don't start scoring in the PL, you should not keep strikers that can score goals out of the team.

punky 05-12-2010 00:26

Re: Football Season 2010/2011

Crouch isn't that bad. He's just not played to his strengths. He's constantly getting balls pinged at his head for to knock down to someone. When the ball is at his feet near the goal his scoring record is much like it is for England (21 in 41 and mainly small sub appearences)

I hate seeing the constantly long-ball-to-Crouch game but sadly nothing much we can do about that for now.

BTW you do know he set up the goal today, don't you?

That's a great plan, superb in all but one minnor detail, Bill Nic is dead. Btw Crouch and Van der Vaart looked like a great combination earlier in the season...

Re: Football Season 2010/2011

TWO points state, One l know that there great Bill Nic is dead, BUT, under his realm, if a striker didn't score after so many games, they would be dropped, this for some unkown reason Harry wants to keep Crouch playing, and yet Pav is on the bench, doesn't make sense.

On the Hughton saga, this is typical of Ashley, he doesn't know what is good for him, the fans like him, but after the game at the weekend, Ashley felt he needed someone else, the only way back now is for toonfans to get back against Ashley, in the only way how - don't go to the game in protest.

Damien 06-12-2010 19:55

Re: Football Season 2010/2011

I think he has been wanting to do this for a while, however his results were decent enough to make it difficult. Winning 5 - 1 against Sunderland, winning away at Arsenal. Since then he has gone 5 games without a win, one of them a draw against Chelsea, but superficially the 5 game streak serves as a excuse for Ashley.

Shambles of a decision. I don't think it further needs saying how absurd this firing is.

The ref in the Spurs game was very bad, but arn't all European refs, The own goal that Twente gave us, it would have counted if Clattenberg was in charge.

To say that Spurs have had a hard group is no surprise to me, but we must learn from our mistakes, WE must have a good strike force and a defence, and this has been our downfall.

Spurs are doing doing great, lets hope that Harry can keep the 'kick up ass job' as some of the team are not performing as if we were a good team.

Well I don't think the group turned out to be as hard as we thought. The two teams I thought would finish above Spurs have been awful in their domestic leagues as well as European competition.

I think Spurs haven't had many mistakes to learn from, they will continue to concede goals but this is a result of the way they play and leads to their high-scoring games.

I don't think there is anyone that hard that Spurs could face in the last 16 either.

And the 5 and a half year contract had nothing to do with it, honest...

Absolutely shocking. There's few nice guys left in football, but Hughton seemed like one of them. Hope he takes Ashley for everything he can get out of him.

Newcastle is in the top 5 clubs in England. It's only about 50 miles from Scotland.

I do not follow football and even I know that someone called Alan Pardew has taken over the reins at Newcastle.;)

I suppose it was inevitable really:

Carlos Tévez stuns Manchester City by handing in transfer request after growing disenchanted with management

Carlos Tévez has rocked Manchester City by submitting a formal transfer request. The club captain and leading scorer is adamant that he wants to quit Eastlands after growing disenchanted with the management.

The 26 year-old, who signed a five-year contract on his arrival from Manchester United in July 2009, has struggled to build a relationship with chief executive Garry Cook and manager Roberto Mancini since the sacking of Mark Hughes last year.

It is understood that the written transfer request was submitted several days ago and ahead of Saturday’s 3-1 victory over West Ham United, which Tevez missed through suspension, and which lifted the club to second in the Premier League table.

The revelation that their leading player and figurehead wants to now quit exposes the tensions at City and will be a severe test for Mancini.

I`m wondering if this has anything to do with Kia Joorbachian seeing the whole Rooney incident and thinking more ££££`s for his boy.
They go on about him being "home-sick" yet in the next breath link him with Real-Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea. Are they much closer to his family in Argentina
He goes on about respect from the manager while also complaining he is playing to much football. What about respect for the club that is paying his wages?
Bobby Moore must have turned in his grave so many times the sides are probably worn out!!!

Man Utd 1 Arsenal 0 :D

Not a bad game.......Arsenal were not that good, and United need to improve a bit.

Personally, I would like to see a spearhead from United of Rooney and Hernandez, with Berbatov as a stand in, I think that might work.

As for Arsenal, who cares :p:

Well the Arse outscored United in two areas, 17 fouls to 8 and 4 yellow cards to 0.

Mind you the challenge by Ferdinand on Sagna was a bit iffy.;)

And Wenger claims its Arsenal who are roughed up :erm:
Most Arsenal fans make me laugh, they seem to forget that they haven't always been knowing for the flowing (but ultimately useless) football they play.

Whatever. Rio did a flying kick on Sanga and Fletcher should have been booked for his reaction towards the ref when he lost it. Wouldn't affect the game but did affect the statistics regarding fouls and bookings after, it was a rough game on all sides.

It was an appalling game, I've never seen two top sides give the ball away so much, you'd never have guessed it was a top of the table clash.
Though Man Utd were the better side.
As for your "whatever" response, does that mean you're one of the fans who "forgets" anything pre-1996?

Just winding you up ;)

Just like how Clichy should have been booked for taking down Nani from behind in the first few minutes. I think there was something like 12 fouls from Arsenal in the first 20 minutes or so with no bookings, the ref was extremely lenient. We all know what Wenger would have said if it had been the other way round. Instead he blamed the pitch.... ;)

No. It means I am one of the fans who can't see what the pre-96 Arsenal teams have to do with the current Arsenal team. It's irrelevant. There is a dramatic difference between the style of football then and now.

Wenger blamed the pitch for the poor 'technical' quality of the game. Such as the passing for both sides and the players falling over.

Quote:

"The intensity was high but it was a very bad pitch,The technical quality suffered as a result and that's why you saw mistakes from both sides."
As per usual the press has taken a quote out of content as they usually do with Wenger and used to do with Benitez. Nice copy for papers playing up to the 'moaning foreigner' stereotype. Both of whom should have taken a leaf from Ferguson's book and refuse these press conferences altogether.

The thing is, you'd think he would know better by now not to make such comments as it comments like that which will almost certainly be taken out of context. In my opinion there was no need to criticise the pitch, it was the same for both teams and because it was the first thing he said in the interview it does seem like he was making excuses and deflecting criticism from the teams poor performance.
