Hi Media Boy,

When you say "All BBC Radio and TV Channels will launch in all areas of Virgin TV" in post 1, does this mean just the BBC TV areas "England", "Northern Ireland", "Wales, "Scotland" - or will we be getting all the regions (ie. "South East", "London", etc)?

Also does this mean Virgin will finally have BBC Two Wales, etc - or just the BBC One channels?

Just what is in ntl areas, region spefic like souith east and such will not launch as they are only required for that area, it iwll be scotland, england etc

I have been hearing a few times today that the BBC are making their HD content available on iplayer. Will that only be the internet based iplayer or are we going to see it on the VM catch up TV implementation of iplayer?

Any ideas?

BBC HD iPlayer is only on the iPlayer web site right now but will come to other network (Virgin Media) soon.

BBC has still to set an launch date for it to appear on Virgin Media.

Quote:

At present, the new HD servce, which also includes HD downloads of some programmes, is only available on the BBC iPlayer at present.
There are plans to roll out the HD streams to devices such as the Virgin Set Top Box and PlayStation 3, but no date has yet been set.

Two days after it's on FX - starts April 26th. Series will stack as its broadcast. They're also add season one to Virgin Central this month, but I believe only in SD. (I've put the press release from Virgin up on the VMHD blog.)

I think the FX HD announcement is quite significant. FX is owned by Murdoch's News Corp, which of course also controls Sky. Perhaps some Sky HD content, at least tv content, is not far behind??

I think that you mean Star Plus and Star News. Star Gold and Star One are not available on Virgin and if I remember rightly Media Boy has stated that Virgin are not interested at this time.

So simply put not for a while yet.

Hi Media Boy,

Many thanks for your enquiry and interest in our Channels.

It is of course our interest to have all our Channels available with each of our providers and as such we are in active discussions with Virgin Media in relation to both Military and History HD.

We hope that our discussions will be successful, but in the meantime would suggest that you also express your desire to receive these Channels directly to Virgin Media.

Many thanks for your continued support and interest.

Are Virgin Media testing an new channel for launch?

Last night I look at my setting to see the number on ''Total Channels'' and I got 310.

Then today Virgin Media removed ''PPV Event'' from Channel number 980. But my ''Total Channels'' still says 310.

So I think Virgin are going to using that channel for an Ex-ntl channel to launch in Ex-Telewest areas.

IF VM want to bring in HD channels, but can't as they claim there is no room, to add these channels, what is the damn point of bringing in +1 channels, that are just repeats of the main channel, it's pointless.

Arthur do you happen to be about 2 years behind in time? that was the reason just over a year ago, however they now have room to launch i think up to 10 hd channels in mpeg2 however thye wont have room for other channel so i think they plan to launch maybe 5-8 and that give them room for about 20-40 new sd channels, the regionally difference have already got allocated space so do not count ot the 20-40 channels. The reason for no luanhc of hd yet is cause the contracts have to be finalised first whihc i believe isnt to far off

No, it's not pointless. Only the other day I had a clash of programmes at 10pm. I wanted the News, Flashpoint and Sarah Connor Chronicles. By switching Sarah to Virgin 1+1 I was able to record all 3 programmes on my V+ box.

You really shouldn't get so annoyed. The +1 channels are not preventing other channels from appearing on the EPG.

It's worth pointing out that, if the platform is currently bandwidth constrained, they could be preventing new channels from appearing altogether.

Unlikely as it'd be more for those "free" thieves with illegal STBs. It's more difficult to crack it on Sky boxes, hence why Sky wouldn't be willing to let Virgin broadcast it on their network.

You are right, but 'if' is the appropriate word. We were told a while ago that there were bandwidth constraints, then suddenly we were told that more capacity had been added to the system and we could get up to 30 new channels. (Only some of these have appeared).

We know that VM are negotiating contracts for a number of new HD channels, which should come to us within a few months. If they were that bandwidth constrained, they wouldn't be able to do this.

I think the bandwidth argument is not one we need to worry about, and with the forthcoming analogue switchoff, if it is a problem at all it will soon go away. New contracts for new channels means more expenditure for VM, and this is the more likely explanation for the lack of channels.

Have we already forgotten what was said last December? Or that VM have already announced (back in 2007, no less!) that they have the right to carry Channel 4 HD, linear and VOD?

What shocks me is that we have been having these sorts of discussions ever since I joined this board, and in that time I've seen very little to indicate that VM are serious about HD.

Is it me or is there still very little on the HD catchup section of iPlayer. I know that this is out of virgins control (BBC have control over content not VM).

But it is now a week on and according to my planner there are 12 programs available - more than a quarter of which are childrens programs.

A total of 7 hours programming (and that is being generous as I have rounded up). There is approx 9 hrs programming per night on the BBC HD channel, so over the week a total of 63hours of programming. Even if we assume that 3/4 of it is repeats that should still be 15 hours of "catch up".

Now dont get me wrong I am happy that there is a bit more HD programming on the system (and as I said I dont blame VM for this) but it does feel a bit poor.

Granted there isnt much more on the iPlayer website - but overall pretty poor.

I do find it slow when I go through the red button on a BBC channel. However, I usually access the BBC content through the Home button, option 2, then option 3. Yo have to search through all catch up content, but at least don't have to wait for the i player to load, which does take ages.

Anyone else found that the search option on the iplayer never finds the results you want?

As someone recently mentioned about FX an HD, i too think it could be a new channel on the horizon...however far it may be.

lately ive had issues where my V+ box has been freezing on iplayer when its loading and the only way to fix it is to reset the box. this happens 2 or 3 times a day and is at a point where i think the box may well be on its way out.

as for FX in HD i would be over the moon if that happened even if it was the only other channel we get as i watch it often.

This was posted on Reuters this morning regarding Virgin Media:-

"We are working to ensure our TV service stays ahead of changes in consumer

behavior. We expect to increase our High Definition (HD) content steadily to

complement our existing linear and on-demand line-up. We are currently

negotiating with several broadcasters with a view to launching at least five new

HD channels in the third quarter of 2009. We've recently had some positive

results from our VOD advertising trial and this offers the potential for an

attractive revenue stream in the future."

It now appears to be the 3rd quarter before anything will happen. Perhaps!

Don't forget they don't lie at Virgin - they said they would have more HD in 2007, then 2008 and now 2009 - it's only 1430 AH in the Islamic Calendar so only 579 years to go until the wait is over.......

We are currently negotiating with several broadcasters with a view to launching at least five new HD channels in the third quarter of 2009.
First i remember seeing spring time, then may, then by summer, now 3rd quater, arggg. Least they are in talks as some sort of positive.

It has no more meaning than "coming soon," though. It seems as if VM have a whole book of non-committal phrases!

Even though the website's still The Wall Street Journal, there is another link - http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-...05-703200.html - which works fine (no subscription needed).

I like the way they say "plans to launch as many as six new high-definition channels in the third quarter of 2009".

---------- Post added at 15:22 ---------- Previous post was at 15:11 ----------

Hmm, for some strange reason the link lets me read the full article when going via Google News, but doesn't let me view the article if I go to that URL normally.

So if you want to read it you need to go to http://news.google.co.uk/news?pz=1&n...=all&scoring=n and scroll down to the "INTERVIEW: Virgin Media To Launch 6 New HD Channels -CEO" article from Wall Street Journal.

probably will be 1 channel launching on september 30th. I really do hate virgin and their constant lies about hd channels and that their network having lots of capacity even though they dont and have to throttle internet connections, wish the government would step in and stop them.

they already have rights for itvhd and channel4hd, they should have launched many months ago.

they do not have the rights for itvhd

they aint lying they are like any business they ssay wha tther eplans are but contractrs are problem for all companies untiol they are signed they cant launmch them. many virgin insiders can assure they are working on it now they are taking hd seriously now they have 20% pentration for hd boxes so that says to them hd is wanted now and is worth paying for

yes ITVHD is exclusive to freesat and as ITV are one of the founders of that I suspect that will remain that way for some time.

I've never seen a quote to confirm VM have the rights to Channel 4 HD either

Anyone any ideas whay % of Sky customers have Sky HD?

It seems wrong to me that any buissines has to be completely honest in paid advertisments, yet in press releases, which I assume cost nothing, they can offer potential customers anything they want, whether they deliver or not.
I'm not saying VM aren't working on getting hd channels, and I'm sure they fully mean to deliver on these claims, but they are saying things to encourage people to take or continue taking their service which they do not deliver. Hints of false advertising to me. virginruinedntl is right, the government maybe should step in and make some rules on what can be said in press releases.

that is adifferent matter, i believe they can not falsely claim something they can not back up, so i am guessing they can back it up, your best bet would be to complain to asa if they come abck and uphod it then they ar elying if they dnt then they truly are working on it (sacarism of there words)

well sky are kicking virgin's ass in the HD department, miles more channels and they increased from around 500,000 subscribers to 1.02m in the last 3 months, mainly due to their £50 Sky+HD box pricing, i can see virgin's V+ subscribers jumping ship if they dont offer more hd channels soon.

acutally its only about 200000 to 300000 extra in the last three month, and the £50 is fairly new i dnt think there will be many leaving the ones that will leave have odne there only a small few that will leave now

Cheers Andrew, so does that mean that Virgin actually have more % of their customers in V+HD than Sky have in Sky +HD

If SkyHD is 1/8 = 12.5% and V+HD 17% (Maths not my strong point)

I thought a big reason Sky invested so heavily was lots of people took up HD...

Hmmm...maybe Virgin have done the math and realised they need to pull their finger out...

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

The V+ is VM's only DTR, so the figures for it will include everyone who uses it as an SD DTR. In that context, it's not nearly as impressive, since I think about half of Sky customers have Sky+ in some form.

I'm from Nynex days (here that preceeds C&W) - and have broadband, tv (XL), telephone. But my latest contract expires in August, so if no HD by then, I'm off to Sky. Hate to do it, but if Virgin Media wont give its customers what they want, they can expect more to leave.

HD Channels on Virgin Media:

I have been given info on the list of broadcasters that Virgin are in talks with for they HD Channels.

All I can say is Channel 4 HD is coming but no Sky owned HD Channels will be appearing any time soon.

Virgin Media is planning to change its electronic programming guide so that catch-up TV content is as easy to find as linear television channels. The company has also been testing tying adverts around VoD content, offering another potential money-spinner.
"We are seeing catch-up programming driving things forward," Berkett added. "But HD on demand is also becoming important and we are launching, in July or August, another half a dozen linear HD channels as well. We think it is time to start to join the evolution of HD viewing. Economically it is about the right time."

Like yourself lemarsh I'm also a veteran from the original Nynex days, and back then cable was certainly on a par with Sky's TV offering.
The sad part of all this is that VM were the "first" to bring their customers HD!! In my opinion Sky also stole a march on VM in 2001 by grasping the nettle and turning off their analogue signal, I believe VM are intending on keeping their analogue on until the end of 2010.
This can't have helped over the years as bandwidth has been at premium recently.
Anyway my contract also finishes this year, end of September, as much as I'd rather stay at VM if these almost "mythical" HD channels still aren't here and the line we are getting from VM is " don't panic, we will be releasing ten...yes count them, ten HD channels in the very near future", then I'm off to a provider who delivers on HD.

you're right, i mis-read. Here's the correct info: http://www.hdtvuk.tv/2009/04/sky_hd_subscrib_1.html

i also hope Eurosport HD comes as i love tennis and it would look far better in HD especially as the resolution and bitrate are so low on regular eurosport.

my wanted 6 channels are:

Eurosport HD
Setanta HD
Channel4HD
ITVHD
Discovery HD
National Geographic HD

MTVHD would be a nice touch too, but hardly any content on it, mainly just music from festivals on it, would like to see mtv's own tv shows on there.

scrap Satanta HD (setanta is in financial trouble and wond be around much longer by the looks of things) and replace it with History HD (as Media Boy has already stated that VM are in talks with them) and then you may have a list that looks pretty close to what we should get.
