Anyway there is a thread concerning the new cards and another for dodgy boxes, will move this thread into that one

Threads now merged

My area must be switched over i have all the new channels, i have e4hd, scifiHD etc:confused: But no new card yet. I did say to him you'll need a new card. He has an samsung box, non v+ with a card and then the box plugged into it i think?

I did look for the dodgy box thread but couldn't find it after 3 pages.

I told him straight that he should pay for it like everyone else, he just thought it's very funny. Is it just coincidence that Wolverhampton switched over and his box went down temporarily?

we,re on the new cards and got the new channnels but the chipped boxes in our area are still working. Is there something else still to happen which will scupper them.

I hope it aint been hacked already!!

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

I suppose until your area has become NGTV, no new cards are sent out. In my case there was a good month gap between my area Luton became NGTV and me receiving my new card.

Going on this logic, unfortunately same of the pirates still have a few months left to watch, as there is still 50% of the network not on NGTV :(

Kymmy 02-04-2010 20:41

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

Remember this N3 system has been in us on the Euro sats for a couple of years and it's withheld upto any hacking attempt.. The new channels are not an indication of them going totally to the new system, if they had then anyone without a new card would NOT get any service

Ben B 02-04-2010 21:04

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

1. Area Switches to NGTV

2. New cards are sent out to area

3. Once satisfied that everyone in that area has a new card for their legit boxes old encryption is switched off

4. Dodgy boxes in that area become door stops

Yes.

After the new cards are sent out they'll turn off the old encryption which will stop the boxes.

There's a period where both the old and new encryption run side by side, and during this time both the new cards, old cards, and dodgy boxes will all work. Once they start turning the old encryption off though (and they do it in phases taking out sets of channels at a time) then both the old cards and the dodgy boxes will cease to work.

He said it went down on wednesday and so did a load of others but he put a dongle in the back and it's back up and working!

It's a digibox branded box. The thing is our area was switched over on Wednesday but we haven't got our new cards yet. I told him about nagra 3 but he already knew all about it and he said that he's got a work round from a mate.

I thought nagra 3 was so far unhacked?

I'm confused, our area has gone over yet he's still using a chipped box?

May i just say again that N3 is unhacked anywhere in the world at this time. Using a card to circumnavigate the encryption is not a viable option with N3. :D

Yes VM will ensure All Customers are on new cards then turn off the N1 encryption and then its door stop time for the dodgy boxes in that area.

And finaly a quote from a well known hacking site by one of there mods

Quote:

Important info regarding nagra 3
simple fact of the matter is this.
once your area goes over to nagra 3 and the older revisions are swiched off any box other than a payed for sub will cease to decode channels other than the terrestrial 1 to 5.
this includes after market boxes such as starview / kryptview and dreamboxes. it also includes modded original boxes and all cards from moscs to fun cards.

until nagra 3 is hacked this will not change. and for the record nagra 3 has been in operation on the european satellite networks for over 3 years so just because it's come to uk cable don't expect a over night solution.

any more threads opened asking the questions answered here will be closed and infractions will ensue.
So i take it the mods on that forum are ****ed with all the How can i get my box working posts

That is quite impressive to have an encryption that hasn't been hacked after a few years, didn'ty the studios spend millions on Blu ray security and that was defeated in just days?

The spotty guy at the car boot sale that sells boxes with software on a disk will hack it in no time, hopefully spotty guy wont and we all get better service :D

Please tell me this includes knocking modems off, theres loads around here and they must be downloading NASA database

One would hope so as they are a bigger threat to the network than a dodgy box ever was or will be.

Looking for an answer on this. Is the roll-out complete yet because Ive been seeing numerous dody boxes in Norwich still working. Is this the first signs of a crack or have they not been hit by Nagra 3 yet?

No its not complete and no its not been cracked. Also you post on the forums where the hackers post with the same name as you use here so why not ask them.

What gets me is when I overhear them cursing Richard Branson for having had the nerve to have deprived them of their premium TV channels and how they are paying him back by going to Sky. I wish I had the nerve to discuss the issue with them but I'm a coward and they can run faster than me so there's no safe escape route. :D

The good news Jo, is that new higher tier subs from previous "basic" accounts have been very good from what I hear.

We may have lost a few, but over-all it's going well.... VM have drawn a line in the sand with previous free-loaders, but they are very serious about any future theft.

:)

Hi, PLEASE help

I am a genuine Virgin customer and recently got my new updated smart card however I sold my old one and I figured they would re-write it but I am concerned now to know if it will affect my bill/connection, I read on here that the talk back is disconnected so I am hoping that means they cannot use paid for tv like the premium film packages and sports events.

Can the old card affect me in anyway or will it be totally re-written and not matter ?

Thanks in advance

OK you do realise that the money paid to the people who produce music, films, books and artwork are selling on behalf of the musicians, actors, film workers, writers and artists? That the money they makes is divided up into different pots and one of those pots are the Musicians, writers, actors etc?

Now why should any musician carry on and produce music if someone like you isn't prepared to pay him for his talent. They can't work for nothing,no one can.If you don't buy but just download for nothing you are literally stealing from that musician.

Now is that fair?Is it right?

Put yourself in their place and think how you would feel.

That would be fine if it was just the TV that ran on the cable. However it's shared with the broadband

Now why should any musician carry on and produce music if someone like you isn't prepared to pay him for his talent. They can't work for nothing,no one can.If you don't buy but just download for nothing you are literally stealing from that musician.

Now is that fair?Is it right?

Put yourself in their place and think how you would feel.

it has actually been shown that those that download illegally actually en masse spend more on actual product then those that don't.

presumably because the vast majority use it like browsing - hear something they like and then want to own the actual release.

:D

its a simple statement of fact.

there is a tiny minority who download this stuff to sell at markets etc. but the overwhelming majority who are net savvy want the releases as early as possible i.e. leaked and to watch TV premieres as soon as possible rather than wait 6 months for them to cross the Atlantic who will then go out and actually buy the box sets etc.

As always companies drag their heels when they should be embracing new technology.

However, what happens is that one person shares it. Ten people download it, then share it. Ten people download from each of them (so we have 110 people sharing it now), and Ten people download from each of them. Now we have over 1,000 people sharing the original file. A couple of steps down the line, we will have 100,000. A couple of further steps and we could be up to 1 million.

1 person sharing a file will not directly make a difference. A few steps down the line, when thousands of people are sharing the file (and this is how Bit torrent works by default: You share everything you download), companies start going bankrupt and all of a sudden all those singers, songwriters, actors etc are losing money. A lot of money.

That's an argument for another thread...

In the end though if you use your internet connection for copyright infringement they can find out and they can take action based on their own Terms and conditions in your contract.

Now lets get back on topic please which is Dodgy Boxes (i.e.. using modified or non-standard equipment to get services that has not been paid for)

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

A question people could ask themselves is why Virgin/Ntl etc left the network unsecured for so long?

Could it be that they were getting subs to phone and internet and the illegal boxes were actually costing sky money?

Another advantage was these boxes had was they were actually better quality and were updated more often than the official set top boxes.

Hugh 23-09-2010 13:20

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

Or could it be it is because Virgin (and NTL before them) are a conglomeration of smaller Cable companies, which came together due to the industry consolidation of the 90's and 00's, and it takes time to standardise everything?

So now all these dodgy boxes are going down would you think there will be an uptake of proper VM TV, if so would that mean VM would reduce their price.
Or do you think they would now go to Sky or BT as the dodgy boxes was just used on the line while they used phone line and broadband.
So if more leave VM would price's go up.

Without going in to too much detail... subscriber growth is healthy in areas where dodgy boxes are getting bricked ;)

Prices aren't going to come down, but more subscribers means more revenue, more revenue means they can invest more in the network, channels, VOD and customer experience, plus better hardware.

That's good to hear. As a result of the 'amnesty' on dodgy box owners, results have been good.

I hope, however, that there will be no further amnesty for those that are now choosing card sharing to defraud Virgin Media and that Virgin Media will pursue these people ruthlessly.

I pay full price for my 50MBps (well halfsies with my girlfriend) package but if someone can get it for free and can get away with it I dont really care, id never call Virgin to report them, no one likes a snitch :td:

Then your attitude says it all. You are condoning illegal activity. Stealing is stealing.

Those that have a conscience don't steal or break the law and hence are unhappy at those that do so without any remorse.

Im not condoning anything im just playing devils advocate to see whats got you guys all riled up. It seems to me its more a question of, "If I have to pay for it why shouldn't then" rather than some moral high ground.

If you have read this thread then surely you will have seen numerous mentions of the illegal boxes causing noise and interference on the network plus they are obtaining their services illegally and that is reason enough for anyone to be happy that these *******s are now losing their freebies.

Also why shouldan y company have to suffer a loss to enable *******s a free ride.

Hasn't it been said before that if one steals then they make a loss of say £30... if 10,000 steals then its £300,000.... etc etc... i hate thieves. if it gives me a better service then i like it... get rid of the thieves.

 totally agree there, it though is normal for those with an inclination to steal to have the "Why should I pay for it when I can get it for nothing" attitude..

The bottom line is that it is illegal and is counted as theft to bypass subscription protection without payment

Personally, I'm sick of the "The world owes me" attitude. And stealing is stealing, you aren't honourable just because you don't get caught

Those who are happy to steal cable, probably also think that lifting something out of my wallet is ok..as long as they are not caught

If a company used questionable tactics doing business, I wouldn't like that either..it is the attitude of some who I dislike

It is quite funny tho that Virgin is now more secure than Sky.Its all about cs Sky now,now that this cat is out of the bag people who were into cable boxes are getting into cs sky.loads of bars in the uk are now showing sat 3pm through buying (grey/legit) yearly itilian/german subscriptions and others are obviously cs those.

How do members on here who are 100% bonafida legit feel about not being able to watch sat footy at 3pm?
would you think about going semi legit by purchasing a sky itilia card and box?

I too have been a customer since about 1998 back in the analogue days on Cable & Wireless. Happy days!

As we were pretty much all capable of having TV service without paying for it but chose not to, the situation could be that VM would have only been making revenue from about 80% of those taking the service (allowing for those who take a basic package but steal the rest) and so by now there would be no service at all. I, for one, would have a problem with that. If VM were to have a write-off policy for 10% of service being illegally obtained then soon enough it would be 80% or more and the business would become untenable.

As Masque pointed out, some of these unscrupulous installations cause interference on the network and, hence, potential loss of service to genuine customers. I've seen a real humdinger of a DIY cabling job here in Aylesbury and I reported it.

The fact that VM have to invest in protecting themselves and their customers from this kind of theft is a crime in itself.

I remember when a baggage handler was caught on CCTV stealing from passengers' luggage at Gatwick the union threatened industrial action for him being fired stating that it was a perk of the job. In my view, any union member supporting that stance should also be liable to termination. They are in a position of trust and if they can't be trusted they should have that position taken away. Sadly, if you do a search for this kind of thing, you'll see it is still going on at UK airports as well as in other countries. Cleaners in Luton have been caught doing the same.

My point is that the crime is bad enough but trying to defend it or just turn a blind eye to it is as bad.
