Re: Plane Spotters Corner

I was just watching a cat play chicken by sitting in the middle of the lane when I saw to the South what I thought was a firework going off in the sky. It was travelling from South to North and flew right over me at a relatively low height, below the low clouds. There were just 4 very bright crimson red navigation lights grouped closely together in a N.S.E.W. Formation, not touching each other but very close. Within just a few seconds it had flown over me in total silence, my question, what was it?
WE are on the flight path to Manchester Airport so I am used to seeing aircraft fly over, in fact far in the South a plane had just turned onto it's final approach, I have seen flocks of birds flying in a V formation at night which take on the appearance of salmon coloured lights and we see the police helicopter flying around a lot and that cannot be described as silent, even ignoring the silence I have never before seen anything flying at night with just four very bright crimson navigation lights grouped so close together, so again, what was it? I'm sure one of you will know.

More likely that they used technology from B&Q and the local timber merchant.

Magnifico Post..Thanks.

I've only on one occasion seen a Vulcan in real life flight & that was by accident, my car had broken down about 3 miles from RAF Valley.

While under the bonnet this most magnificent aeroplane did a fly by over head, I'm not sure if it landed or a touch & go on the runway but OMG those engine rattled my head for ages. :)

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

First one I saw was when I was very young, I was playing on the local common and a shadow passed over me, when I looked up there was a Vulcan flying slow at low level, next day it was in the local paper, the Vulcan was doing a flypast over the local AVRO factory as a thank you to the workforce who had made parts of the plane there. I knew what the plane was because I used to collect Turf cigarette cards, we were producing new models of aircraft what seemed like every month back then so it was a very exciting time for a young boy.
Last time I saw one was at the opening of the Manchester Air & Space Museum, again it was a low speed low level pass, incredible how they creep up on you almost silently then as it passes all hell breaks loose, I think every burglar alarm for miles around the museum went off.

My two favourite aircraft of all time are the Vulcan and the English Electric P1, the P1 always looked very futuristic to me. On the way to Blackpool on the A6 there was an English Electric showroom at a busy road junction, a P1 was on display outside in front of the showroom for a number of years.
Happy days....

I passed out at Swinders 1974, and the fly past was five Phantoms at low level, and when I was Digby afterwards, we could see Vulcans take off from Waddington when we drove to/from Lincoln.

Horrific indeed. :(

The wide-angle lens of the camera used for that footage may be distorting things somewhat, but the aircraft's angle of attack seems quite steep to me. It does appear as if the plane stalled and came to almost a complete standstill in mid air.

I don't think you even need a rumour mill to establish this was a maintenance failing - both cowls came loose within minutes of take off, the odds against that occurring as a result of mechanical failure must be vast.

The future of flying?
Quote:

An aircraft with a lace-like structure may not seem like the best way to fly, but it is one of a range of radical ideas about how we may travel in the future.

A model of the aircraft, designed by Airbus, was shown off at the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh.

Taking inspiration from the human skeleton, the design is both strong and relatively lightweight.

This means it could, in theory, drastically reduce the fuel costs of flying.

The European company said the aim would be to 3D print the composite material that would make the structure.

The concept aircraft was created by a team of structural engineers at Airbus.

There has been a 'problem' on an Egyptair 777 from Cairo to New York.

Quote:

Police are in attendance at a Scottish airport after a plane was diverted from Egypt on its way to the USA.

A spokesman for Prestwick Airport confirmed that the flight from Cairo to JFK in New York had been diverted.

The A79 has been closed "until further notice" by police and ScotRail's website notes that shuttle buses between the airport and Glasgow have been suspended.

BBC New York producer Nada Tawfik, a passenger on board, found a note in the plane's toilet with the words 'I'll set this plane on fire'.

Looks like an accident waiting to happen.

Clearly a fake, the jet wash coming of that would damage the building.

Plus the flaps aren't deployed, thus cgi from somebody who knows squat about 747s

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

You're better off on the other side of the airfield from the avp, up on the bank past the crash gates. Under the runway tunnel towards Wilmslow and first left at the small roundabout onto the service road then up onto the bank. There will be nowhere to park up there though so it means dumping the car (there's a pub and a hotel if you're discreet) and a bit of a trek on shanks's pony. The light is far better in the morning for photography and videos plus you won't have to fight the stinky crowds in the viewing park.
