Having said that independent speed test sites, such as speedtest.co.uk and namesco speed check all give me 10mb, so why does the above one give me a different result, man im confused any experienced folks to help me out?

It was most likely read from your browser cache, rather than directly from the site :)

I guess the optimistic way to look at it is that there are only a limited number of areas on the list and the more that change to Complete or have a date the nearer each of us TBCs get to joining the finished lot.:)

is the 10meg download limit going to stay th same as it was on 4megs? 800mb down during the hours? or will they increase to at least 1GB or 1.5?

In areas where 10Mb speeds are available, the top 3% of downloaders download at least 800MB of traffic each during the peak period each evening, with the top 3% of uploaders uploading at least 400MB of traffic in the same period.

Any users hitting this amount during peak times (4pm till 9pm) will have their broadband speed temporarily traffic managed – their download speed will be set to 2.5Mb, with their upload speed set to 128Kb. This will last for 5 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied.

I realise that this'll sound bizarre but there are currently three STM policies under discussion:

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

hey guys below is the current stm.

http://www.virginmedia.com/help/traffic-management.php

As you know I recently got upgraded to 10mb. Now in day time everything is fine. However during night time, my speeds get capped to 2.5mb. Now according to the stm, 2.5mb is the speed users will be downgraded to if they download over the limit during 4-9 clock.

I waited until after 9, around 10 clock to start downloading songs and booom my speeds goes down to 2.5mb. For the second night in a row, i was angry, so a quick call to technical support, and they tell me ive been capped. For what reason they dont have a clue because they can see from their end that I did not download anything at all.

Whats the point of buying a service if they dont let us use it, and even if u dont download over their limits, they'll still cap you. Now i proberly understood that my speed was low, but what about thousands of others that dont know. Virgin media is taking the p!ss. Its like buying a banana but only being allowed to eat half of it.

Is anyone else having problems like mine, cos im naffed. More of us should complain that we want Richard Branson out, and back to the Blueyonder days.

So any info guys...............?

hey huys this is my ubr :
cpc1-bolt9-0-0-manc.cable.ntl.com

btw from the monday in this week when I have downloaded something from internet explorer (rapidshare/megaupload) the speed starts off at about 1.2 MB/S then decreases to a steady 500-512 Kb/s. My area is still TBC but it's kind of strange don't you think. This has never happened to me before.

If you can somehow get the STM to trip-in before 10pm, I'd recommend you immediately get onto the newsgroup and ask TS to confirm the time it started.
If their logs show it cut in after 9pm, they'll have little argument against reporting it as a fault.

Oh, and Blueyonder effectively sold you out to NTL.

I'm not really in a position to advise you MaX as I do my downloading in the early hours of the morning. As long as the downloads are there in the morning when I need them I never really worry how long they take. I am probably one of the least techie people around here but I am sure that other members will be able to advise you. :)

the only way to find out is to swap to an ethernet connection - just make sure if you do, that you uninstall the USB drivers so there are no conflicts, and that the ethernet card is showing no issues in device manager before re-booting everything - modem first, next the router if you have one, then the computer. Remember to allow plenty of time for each device to initialise before moving on to booting the next one ...

Not yet. I'm one of the unfortunates on the Baguley server. VM did some work a couple of weeks ago the result of which was that my connection was moved from cpc 1 to cpc 4 and since then my speeds have been far more consistent giving me 3.7 whenever I check.

To be honest I am almost dreading the upgrade now in case I start loosing all my speed due to contention again.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

What a load of rubbish VM are turning out to be. Just go tmy 10meg upgrade and jump on tonight and think 'this is slow'. Just tested and i have been capped. Now usually i would not mind as i do download a bit but the funny thing is i have done nothing in the last 2 days. In fact i have hardly used the net at all.

Is it possible that VM have upgraded but can't deliver what they promise?

results here
Fri, 06 Jun 2008 20:23:09 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 4078 ms = 251.1 KB/sec, approx 2069 Kbps, 2.02 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 4359 ms = 234.9 KB/sec, approx 1936 Kbps, 1.89 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2185 Kbps, 2.13 Mbps

EDIT - Just tested again

Test 4: 2048K took 6594 ms = 310.6 KB/sec, approx 2559 Kbps, 2.5 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 3593 Kbps, 3.51 Mbps

Not capped at all. VM can't deliver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi People,

I have just noticed that my area (Glasgow) has been marked as upgrade complete. I am currently on the large 4mb package and when I do a speed test I am still on the 4mb package. Should I be starting to see my speeds increase? I am not a heavy user so should not be capped or anything. Also my modem does not need upgraded according to VM. Should I contact VM and ask for help?

Thanks

What a con this upgrade crap is. Broadband will be finished & warp drive starships will be roaming the galaxy before it arrives in Manchester.

I was promised 10 meg in January, if I upgraded to 4meg from 2 meg. 6 months later theres no sign of it on the horizon.

My connection is 2 meg at best most times, a waste of money upgrading.

If you check the "downstream bit rate" from the config pages of your modem, you'll see the speed that you are connecting to your UBR.
You'll find some tips in Annie's Broadband FAQ.

Have a hunt around the pages for something described as the bit rate or a number followed by "bits/sec"?

You actually want the Operation config. page, looking like this:

Network Access : Allowed
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 768000
Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Modem Capability : Concatenation Enabled, Fragametation Enabled, PHS Disabled

If you're on 10Mbps the downstream data rate will be 10240000...

Right enough ceedee.

Hi, I happen to have a similar problem with my area's upgrade.

I am in Stevenage- which has been completed for a few days now, and I have rebooted my modem several times, but no change in speed. However the Operation Configuration panel in the modem seems to suggest an upgrade of some sort:

Network Access : Allowed
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 512000
Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600
Modem Capability : Concatenation Enabled, Fragmentation Disabled, PHS Disabled
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1

But the Downstream Status panel still shows:

Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Frequency : 402750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM256
Downstream Interleave Depth : 32
Downstream Receive Power Level : 13.9 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 26.5 dB

Does anyone know what is going on here?

Thanks

Dan

I'd guess that's most unlikely.

Recommend you contact Tech Support (now free on 151 if you've got a VM phone) and let them know that your modem is still showing the 4Mb configuration despite your area showing complete in the schedule.
(They'll probably tell you to reboot the modem and your computer again but humour them...)

Cheers for the replies ceedee. I contacted Virgin on 150 who then spoke to tech support and they informed me that although my exchange is showing as upgrade complete it is not actually complete....me thinks they are taking the proverbial.

I think the upstream level is okay.
And your modem looks to me to be setup okay for 10Mb/s.

It's worth doing a 'proper' speed test by downloading several files from different sources at the same time while connected directly to the modem (bypassing a router if you've got one).

Have you had your modem for a long time?
Might be worth checking to see if it's compatible with 10Mb/s -- select "Broadband Size: L" and find your modem in the list?

Thanks again, I'll try this out tomorrow and see if it makes a difference.

I have had an ambit 120 for over 4 years and it seems to be compatible according to the link you supplied.

Other than that I guess I will have to ring them up and see what they suggest.

Thanks

Dan

If you don't get anywhere on the phoneline and don't have a problem with using usenet, you could try asking for assistance on the VM Tech Support newsgroup (8am-10pm every day).

Need help getting onto VM's Tech Support newsgroup?

Good luck!

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Hi,

I thought I'd keep you updated on what's going on in case anyone else has a similar problem.

I gave Virgin a rang this morning and they sent a signal down to my modem and determined that it has received the 10mb upgrade, and that the problem lies with my computer. (Now I remember reading in this forum that someone had a similar problem in which they said 10mb, but the modem gave out 4mb) So I insisted that the problem can't be with my computer as why would the downstream channel read 4mb? The gentlemen went away for a while and came back telling me that my modem can't support 10mb-(so much for their website saying it IS supported), which has now landed me with a new modem due to arrive by next friday.

I just hope this solves the issue, but regardless my old modem is over 4 years old so it would be nice to have a newer one.

That's the story so far, I'll tell you what happens when I get the modem.

Thanks,

Dan

p.s. Sorry about the brackets!

Earlier in the thread ( post 846)you recommended someone tests their speed by downloading files. I have just noticed that the site that I use has added a 'download test files' option to their speed test. Do you think that it will give an accurate result?

I don't think he was actually referring to a 10MB limit. More, what were the limits on the 10MB BB.

well looks like the renfrew area of G81 has been updated, as I rebooted modem and the configuration is now up to the 10mb.

it is faster but not as fast as I thought it would be, maybe a rendering issue

Yes, they should (as it says) be more representative of real usage. Also note (again, as it says) they'll count towards your download limit until STM kicks in.

Best to do it out of the proscribed hours...

Cheers for that Coggy. I tried it yesterday and was surprised at the reading as it was almost the same with the downloading going on as with out it.

:erm: With the amount of up loading I am doing at the moment I am being really careful of my timings. Otherwise I would have a permanent STM.

Although my area (Glasgow) is showing complete, I am still only getting 4mb. I contacted tech support and they said that although my area is showing complete, not the whole of this area actually is....confused? me too. What makes it strange is that if I plug in another (spare) modem the Maximum Downstream Data Rate shows 10mb but when I plug up my existing modem it goes back to 4mb. I have been advised to wait until the end of June which was the original completion date. Why did they not just leave the update page alone.

first thing is to uninstall the USB drivers so there are no conflicts.

secondly check in device manager that the network adapter is present & showing as working with no problems. Enable it, if not.

turn everything off, connect the modem to the ethernet port using a normal 'straight through' cat5 cable.

Re-boot the modem & allow it to initialise properly (synch & ready lights are lit & steady).

Re-boot the PC & let it finish the initialisation tasks.

- you 'should' now be able to connect using your normal browser..

Hi, I am happy to report that I now have my 10mb!

You may remember that Virgin told me that my Ambit 120 was not compatible with the 10mb upgrade, so they sent out a new one, which I received 2 days early- an Ambit 256.

After plugging it in, a short activation call with Virgin and a few PC restarts, everything was up and running at 10mb. :)

Thanks to everyone who helped- (or read) my posts, I hope the information and outcome can be used to help someone who may come across the same or similar issue.

I've just visited the 'where's my upgrade' page, and noticed that Baguley has a listing now. Still in the month of TBC like most other things, but at least Warrington is listed, so maybe they haven't forgotten after all.

I've just looked on a map at the places listed under Baguley (Birkenhead, Macclesfield, Runcorn, Stoke, Warrington, Brombrough, Stretford, Wilmslow, Withington)

I assume that the places listed are the areas bounding it's perimeter. I never realised what a large area Baguley server covers.

Well it has been in my area (Bexleyheath) - which is on the Bromley platform.

Getting 9.9 MB downloads now on BBmax.

Try 192.168.100.1 and root/root (user and password) to have a look at your modem config. Look in operational config/Downstream data rate - should be 10240000 if it has been upgraded.
