I guess the optimistic way to look at it is that there are only a limited number of areas on the list and the more that change to Complete or have a date the nearer each of us TBCs get to joining the finished lot.:)

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
hey guys below is the current stm.
http://www.virginmedia.com/help/traffic-management.php As you know I recently got upgraded to 10mb. Now in day time everything is fine. However during night time, my speeds get capped to 2.5mb. Now according to the stm, 2.5mb is the speed users will be downgraded to if they download over the limit during 4-9 clock. I waited until after 9, around 10 clock to start downloading songs and booom my speeds goes down to 2.5mb. For the second night in a row, i was angry, so a quick call to technical support, and they tell me ive been capped. For what reason they dont have a clue because they can see from their end that I did not download anything at all. Whats the point of buying a service if they dont let us use it, and even if u dont download over their limits, they'll still cap you. Now i proberly understood that my speed was low, but what about thousands of others that dont know. Virgin media is taking the p!ss. Its like buying a banana but only being allowed to eat half of it. Is anyone else having problems like mine, cos im naffed. More of us should complain that we want Richard Branson out, and back to the Blueyonder days. So any info guys...............? |
Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
hey huys this is my ubr :
cpc1-bolt9-0-0-manc.cable.ntl.com btw from the monday in this week when I have downloaded something from internet explorer (rapidshare/megaupload) the speed starts off at about 1.2 MB/S then decreases to a steady 500-512 Kb/s. My area is still TBC but it's kind of strange don't you think. This has never happened to me before. |

What a load of rubbish VM are turning out to be. Just go tmy 10meg upgrade and jump on tonight and think 'this is slow'. Just tested and i have been capped. Now usually i would not mind as i do download a bit but the funny thing is i have done nothing in the last 2 days. In fact i have hardly used the net at all.
Is it possible that VM have upgraded but can't deliver what they promise? results here Fri, 06 Jun 2008 20:23:09 GMT Test 1: 1024K took 4078 ms = 251.1 KB/sec, approx 2069 Kbps, 2.02 Mbps Test 2: 1024K took 4359 ms = 234.9 KB/sec, approx 1936 Kbps, 1.89 Mbps Test 3: 1024K took 3391 ms = 302 KB/sec, approx 2488 Kbps, 2.43 Mbps Test 4: 2048K took 7516 ms = 272.5 KB/sec, approx 2245 Kbps, 2.19 Mbps Overall Average Speed = approx 2185 Kbps, 2.13 Mbps EDIT - Just tested again Fri, 06 Jun 2008 20:29:25 GMT Test 1: 1024K took 2750 ms = 372.4 KB/sec, approx 3069 Kbps, 3 Mbps Test 2: 1024K took 1641 ms = 624 KB/sec, approx 5142 Kbps, 5.02 Mbps Test 3: 1024K took 2344 ms = 436.9 KB/sec, approx 3600 Kbps, 3.52 Mbps Test 4: 2048K took 6594 ms = 310.6 KB/sec, approx 2559 Kbps, 2.5 Mbps Overall Average Speed = approx 3593 Kbps, 3.51 Mbps Not capped at all. Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
Hi People,
I have just noticed that my area (Glasgow) has been marked as upgrade complete. I am currently on the large 4mb package and when I do a speed test I am still on the 4mb package. Should I be starting to see my speeds increase? I am not a heavy user so should not be capped or anything. Also my modem does not need upgraded according to VM. Should I contact VM and ask for help? Thanks Johnny |

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
What a con this upgrade crap is. Broadband will be finished & warp drive starships will be roaming the galaxy before it arrives in Manchester.
I was promised 10 meg in January, if I upgraded to 4meg from 2 meg. 6 months later theres no sign of it on the horizon. My connection is 2 meg at best most times, a waste of money upgrading. |

Hi, I happen to have a similar problem with my area's upgrade.
I am in Stevenage- which has been completed for a few days now, and I have rebooted my modem several times, but no change in speed. However the Operation Configuration panel in the modem seems to suggest an upgrade of some sort: Network Access : Allowed Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000 Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 512000 Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600 Modem Capability : Concatenation Enabled, Fragmentation Disabled, PHS Disabled Maximum Number of CPEs : 1 But the Downstream Status panel still shows: Downstream Lock : Locked Downstream Frequency : 402750000 Hz Downstream Modulation : QAM256 Downstream Interleave Depth : 32 Downstream Receive Power Level : 13.9 dBmV Downstream SNR : 26.5 dB Does anyone know what is going on here? Thanks Dan |

And your modem looks to me to be setup okay for 10Mb/s. It's worth doing a 'proper' speed test by downloading several files from different sources at the same time while connected directly to the modem (bypassing a router if you've got one). Have you had your modem for a long time? Might be worth checking to see if it's compatible with 10Mb/s -- select "Broadband Size: L" and find your modem in the list? |

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
Hi,
I thought I'd keep you updated on what's going on in case anyone else has a similar problem. I gave Virgin a rang this morning and they sent a signal down to my modem and determined that it has received the 10mb upgrade, and that the problem lies with my computer. (Now I remember reading in this forum that someone had a similar problem in which they said 10mb, but the modem gave out 4mb) So I insisted that the problem can't be with my computer as why would the downstream channel read 4mb? The gentlemen went away for a while and came back telling me that my modem can't support 10mb-(so much for their website saying it IS supported), which has now landed me with a new modem due to arrive by next friday. I just hope this solves the issue, but regardless my old modem is over 4 years old so it would be nice to have a newer one. That's the story so far, I'll tell you what happens when I get the modem. Thanks, Dan p.s. Sorry about the brackets! |

Although my area (Glasgow) is showing complete, I am still only getting 4mb. I contacted tech support and they said that although my area is showing complete, not the whole of this area actually is....confused? me too. What makes it strange is that if I plug in another (spare) modem the Maximum Downstream Data Rate shows 10mb but when I plug up my existing modem it goes back to 4mb. I have been advised to wait until the end of June which was the original completion date. Why did they not just leave the update page alone.

Enable it, if not. turn everything off, connect the modem to the ethernet port using a normal 'straight through' cat5 cable. Re-boot the modem & allow it to initialise properly (synch & ready lights are lit & steady). Re-boot the PC & let it finish the initialisation tasks. - you 'should' now be able to connect using your normal browser.. |

Hi, I am happy to report that I now have my 10mb!
You may remember that Virgin told me that my Ambit 120 was not compatible with the 10mb upgrade, so they sent out a new one, which I received 2 days early- an Ambit 256. After plugging it in, a short activation call with Virgin and a few PC restarts, everything was up and running at 10mb. :) Thanks to everyone who helped- (or read) my posts, I hope the information and outcome can be used to help someone who may come across the same or similar issue. I've just looked on a map at the places listed under Baguley (Birkenhead, Macclesfield, Runcorn, Stoke, Warrington, Brombrough, Stretford, Wilmslow, Withington)
I assume that the places listed are the areas bounding it's perimeter. I never realised what a large area Baguley server covers. |
