manxman - I can check what tier you're on if you send me either the MAC of the STB or the smartcard number (066xxxxxxxxx). Check with a moderator if you want confirmation that I work at ntl.

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

A couple of weeks ago, we had big problems with our connection dropping every few hours and generally falling over when attempting to do anything. We rang up tech support then, and they apparently created a new account for us, seemingly deleting the old one (as the homepage.ntlworld webspace that came with it has now disappeared). However, I don't seem to have any details at all for the account now - I've tried to upgrade with my old username/pass, but get a "Unable to identify the cable modem MAC (or Ethernet) address. Please reboot your PC and Cable Modem and try again." error.

Just wondering if there's anything I can do to resolve this, MAC address in hand, as I don't have time to call up tech support right now..

I phoned CS yesterday to ask when my Pace 750k STB would be "Automatically Upgraded".I was told that I needed a new STB and was told that the earliest it could be installed was April 12th!!

Is this the "norm" at the moment and what would have happened, if anything, if I hadn't called? Would I have ever been upgraded?

New Samsung fitted half an hour ago, reprovisioned but still getting 750 on robin walker test.

I hadn't spotted the new blue shark remote the engineer left on the side and was trying to change channels with old remote.:dunce:

You would have been upgraded to 1MBit i beleive as that is the fastest the Pace boxes can safely support. They are producing Mailshots in the near future telling you what you need to do to get the speed upgrades, this more than likely would have told you about the need for an STB upgrade.

Forgive me if it has been mentioned already but if you have firewall such as ZA Pro with a new Samsung STB you will need to re enter your UBR, DNS & DHCP server addresses to the firewall trusted zone as thet have changed.

Got a date of 3 May at the absolute earliest, subject to confirmation by the engineering department before they can deliver a new STB. Haven't even been offered 1MB in the interim, which I can live with, given the bandwidth limitations of the 1MB service.

Still 6 weeks out is a long long time :(

Why are the upload caps not in multiples of 128K or even at all proportionate to the download rate?
The old 1mb service had 256K upload, now this will be 100K! Even the new 2mb is only 200K!

it appears you're attempting to compare the old top tier with the new bottom tier. yes it will have a lower upload speed and that's why it's £20 cheaper!

all the tiers have had their upload speeds increased. although the top tier does have a fairly pants upload speed for the price - not worth paying the extra £13 for in my opinion.

the 1mb service is being marketed as a light service that would in the most part be used for e-mail browsing etc , why should they be in multiples of 128k  , :welcome: to the site btw :)

Leaving aside the fact that by comparing the old £37.99/month premium tier with the new £17.99/month bottom tier you're comparing apples with cantilever bridges, the uploads *are* proportionate to the downloads.

1024/100=10.24
2048/200=10.24
3072/300=10.24

So the download speed is always 10.24x the upload speed.

128k multiples are irrelevant for bandwidth control purposes, which are measured purely in bitrates, not bytes or any other power of 2. The UBR and CM file will accept any valid number.

Recently came across the forum and read the first few pages on NTL upgrading broadband. It was the first I knew of this and this evening used the link on the NTLWorld page to upgrade to 1M. Very easy and automatic (I use a cable modem via USB).

This thread is huge to wade through to find specific information. Is there any way to find out how much use of the 3G monthly limit I use as the month progresses.

Looking forward to reading the other topics.

hirfryin, The 3g limit is my only worry, but i read on the ntl site that they don't plan to implement it until the end of the year, by which time they expect to have a monitoing program for us to keep track and some alternatives for people who go over the limit.(by their examples- could be nearly everyone)
Mind you seeing how often they change their mind, the limit could be changed by the time they implement it (I hope) Otherwise they will almost be inviting us to go to AOL!!!

I don't suppose NTL have a rollout plan for the speed increases that they would care to share with us.

I have the 750K service and a Pace STB.Their home page says that upgrades will be automatic i.e. no need to take any action but it would be nice to know what timescale we are talking about.

Anybody on the Cableforum team know when they will be upgrading Manchester please?

You'll need a samsung stb or a SACM to get the full 2meg service. I don't know if ntl will automatically swap it for you, (someone might be able to tell you), so you might need to ring cs and ask them to swap it over.

Yes, I believe the Pace STB will only handle upto 1Mb, so a change of box is on the cards. I vaguely recall that NTL did intend to charge £25 for the upgrade then I heard it was free. Looks like it's free if you have the Samsung already. I will have to contact Customer Services, but it sounds like things are happening if Oldham are already geared up.

Does the Samsung STB give any other advantages apart from broadband speed increases?

I think the swap is free now.

From my experience, the samsung is more reliable, but other than the speed issue, there are no added extras.

Check here: http://www.home.ntl.com/page/broadbandfaqs

And just to repeat the original speeds for the equivalent price level were:

64/128/256 (on the old 300/750/1.5M download services)

1st 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec:)
2nd 128K took 530 ms = 247306 Bytes/sec = approx 2058 kbits/sec:tu:
3rd 128K took 541 ms = 242277 Bytes/sec = approx 2016 kbits/sec:D
4th 128K took 521 ms = 251578 Bytes/sec = approx 2093 kbits/sec

These results appear to be rather fast: maybe this page was in the browser cache.

All together, "Oh no it wasn't" :)

Yes, I've upgraded too but because I have a Pace STB I have had to book an appointment so they are coming on May 5th. Still, it was quick and simple to organise. It was free and the new Samsung box will no doubt be more reliable and suited to future developments.

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

Very Bizarre.

I've just phoned NTL Asking for the upgrade from 300k to 1meg (I rarely download over 3gigs/month anyway, so fair enough I recon)

Spoke to Christine (have her ext too) who told me it's procedure that EVERY SINGLE PACE BOX is being changed to a Samsung box.

I did query this a couple of times, and she agreed saying she did know that people can go at 1 meg on their Pace boxes, but she's not allowed to increace my speed until I get a new box out.

Trying to book in a box-swap (which is actually handy cos I have a week off in a week) "There's been an error - nothing to do with you or the box, but the booking system isn't working"

So she takes my number and appartently I'm to be phoned back in a couple of days to arrange the new box to be delivered.

I asked as she had already said it was possible to get 1meg through my box if I could just be put on the new tier now... was on hold for all of two seconds while she "checked"...

"No, it's now policy to change every person's box"

Anyone else having this kind of thing?

I'm currently recieving 300k BB through a Pace 2000 in Leeds - and frankly I like my box!

BBKing 17-03-2005 12:47

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

Not heard that at all - the job gets substantially bigger if someone wants to do all Pace boxes to Samsungs! If they were OK to do 1Mb in 2001 why not now?

I suspect she's got her wires crossed, but by all means have a Samsung - if you later want to go to 2 or 3Mb it'll save you some hassle.

The main reason I wanted NTL over BT was beause NTL offered 750k same price as BT's at 512k. Then I reliase that customers who had 512k BT and 750k NTL will both have 2MB. I have been looking for the differences:

NTL Monthly Cap: 30GB/1GB Daily
BT Monthly Cap: 15GB

BT CS owns NTL CS, well that what I heard from I heard from most people.

Uploads?

you get 200k upload on the NTL £25 option - there are ADSL suppliers out there that should be able to give you 2mb with a slightly higher upload (256k area) for a lower price than NTL. if upload isnt an issue then I'd stick with NTL.

Good question - I think they'd take the opportunity to take the discount off you though, as they don't offer it to new customers any more :(

Ah man.. this sucks!! My mum phoned NTL on Wednesday around 4pm and asked about the upgrade so the girl explained it to her and said she will upgrade it for us right there.. so my mum said okay, and the girl said okay and done it, after she done it she said it might take a while to come through as the upgraded speeds..

It's now Friday 5:15am and no new speeds :P I think she lied to us! Damn NTL! I know it don't take 2 days almost to come through as a new upgraded speed cause when i upgraded from 128k to 512k it was instant..

I hope todays call will have better results.. Just curious.. anyone else been told their net has been upgraded and it still hasn't come through with the new speeds?

I would bet you'd be moved to the new price Cosmic. When NTL first trialed 1mb, they offered existing NTL punters the chance to test it out, but it ment renewing your contract when switching tiers and you couldn't get back you're previous one when/if you wanted to switch back.

I'm in the same boat as you and I'll be waiting for the auto upgrade in my region, don't want to lose that £5 discount if I can help it, even it I have to wait a month or two.

Oh the confusion of it all.

Rang NTL last Friday to get my Pace box swapped and was told that another Dept was handling all upgrades and they would call me this week.

Heard nothing all week so called back to chase up and was told by a very helpful young lady that she could schedule an appointment for me but it would be about a month.

So I said no problem, could I downgrade to 1Mb for a month whilst I waited for my Samsung and she said the Pace couldn't handle 1Mb so I couldn't.

Then she had a problem with her PC and had to call me back. When she called back she said that I'd have to have a Cable Modem because they weren't supplying Samsungs in certain areas.

Is she right about the Pace boxes and 1Mb?

Is the cable modem thing correct because if it is then it's probably the end of me and NTL cos my 12 months is up and my missus won't want "another box cluttering up the lounge".

She is incorrect about the Pace boxes not being able to support 1mbit. Pace boxes support speeds *up to and including* 1mbit. As for the comment about the Samsung boxes not being supplied in certain areas, it would seem strange that they wouldn't be supplying certain areas with the Samsung boxes. That's just my opinion though.

With a lot of broadband users with Pace STBs wanting changing it is highly likely that Samsungs are in short supply and they are only using CMs in some areas.

Well, I called back to ask when my 12 Months is up (13th April apparently) and when the guy asked why I was thinking of cancelling I told him and he said he didn't think it was right that I had to have a Cable Modem so I'm waiting for a call back to confirm.

Pace boxes can support 1Mb and beyond but NTL are limiting their use to a maximum of 1Mb.

The cable modems are quite tiny, one member on here slipped his into a 5.25" drive bay on his computer.

Ian - That's what I tried to say to CS, but they were adamant that it was policy that everyone getting BB through an STB was to be moved to samsung...

... and after being told i'd be getting a callback to arrange a swap time, have I had one?

Have I heck!

Ok, have had a reply.

Apparently in my area even if I get a Samsung set top box they still can't supply the 2Mb through it because of the cabling in my area so if I want 2Mb I have to have a cable modem.

I think I'm about at my limit with NTL. No interactive, No PVR, no VOD, can't get faster broadband through the STB. I could get a persecution complex.

Phoned thru for the upgrade (750k to 2meg) to be told it could take up to 2 weeks for the speed to take affect. Without me asking tho', nice guy on the other end of the phone says he's gonna credit me £12.50 as I'm only getting half the speed others are :)

I can wait 2 weeks.......

Mind you I had to do it twice.

I would also like to keep my 750 k with no cap as the whole upgrade is usless as why do you need the speed to download only 1 Gig as I can do that with 750k quite easily

"My Upgrade Experience", hope it's of some use as although it's quite easy for some it may prove daunting for others :) :)

Was on 750kb, wanted to upgrade to 2mb obviously as it's costing me the same price :dozey: no brainer.

Needed a new STB as mine was the old Pace box which could only deliver 1mb MAX :(
Called customer services last week Thurs 10.03.05 & requested an upgrade & a replacement STB. Was told it would be Fri 18.03.05 am (that's brilliant i said).

Was called by NTL the day before to confirm the install (very nice touch) & they (two lads) arrived at 08.30 the following day with my new STB
Installed & set up for TV in minutes & went through the controls etc with me.
I asked what about my computer connection & they said yeah it'll be on, nothings different, or words to that effect (very early in the morning to remember exactly) no problem.

Was it on, well No
Powered down, shut computer down. Powered up started computer up.... no luck, tried again no luck.

I was left an info sheet & after reading it called the Team Leader (answer phone message) & then called the Team Manager, yes your ahead of me (answer phone message).
So i called the Tech Support line (0845 £ÃÆ ’‚£Ãà¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£Ãƒââ‚ ¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£Ãƒâ€š £). Very nice guy talked me through a few things a got me to the Provisioning Page (would have been nice to know that i would have to re-provision my computer).
Anyway re-provisioned & now back online, was it at 2mb? ran a speed check & well no it wasn't.

I'd read here on the forum recently (did my homework before i upgraded) that you may have to wait a while for the speed increase & if nothing happens then give them a call (call who ?).

Well nothing happened so i called Tech support (0845 £ÃÆ ’‚£Ãà¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£Ãƒââ‚ ¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£Ãƒâ€š £) who said i had not been turned on for 2mb & was still on the 750kb service & needed to contact Customer Service (ah that's who i need & it's free).

Again contacted someone who was extremely helpful & sent a "HIT" to my box & told me to Power down the STB, shut computer down & Power up & re-start computer up. I then had to re-provision my computer again. Then finally i was surfing at 2mb phew :dozey: :dozey:

I've been using computers for quite a while now & what was a little bit exasperating for me, would i feel, have been avery BIG ORDEAL to a novice.

Questions i feel i must ask of NTL, although everyone i spoke to was really helpful would be:

1. Why can't we have more information of what is required before or during the upgrade, what was the upgrade procedure in step by step detail the provisioning, the hit for the speed etc

2. Or better still why don't the guys who install the new STB not sort the Broadband internet connection before they leave i.e. the "HIT" the provisioning etc then they could deal with any issues that arrive (stress free for the customer). I wrongly presumed/thought they would just turn up and sort it all out???????????

I really hope this is of some benefit to others who will go throught the upgrade experience & also prompt NTL to think about ways to improve their customer service.
Don't get me wrong i'm a loyal NTL customer & overall the service etc is pretty dam good, but like everything in life it can be improved to the benefit of all.

Thanks for listening - Stan :) ;)

I don't think I've got the stomach for it!

As I see it there are two cables coming into my property, 1 for TV / Broadband, 1 for Telephone. Is this correct?

If it is then presumably they don't run in an extra cable if I have a Cable Modem so the 'cabling can't handle it' argument sort of falls over at that point.

Could someone confirm whether I'm correct?

Anyway, I've decided to drop down to 1Mb until all the fuss dies down but after another call to CS I've been told I can't even do that until 4th April! Are they picking on me?

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

OK,

Just called CS to move from 750k via STB to 2mb. My STB replacement is scheduled for 4th April.

In the mean time she has put me on the 1mb service at 17.99. She told me a I may have to enter my PID and account password which I presume means re-registering my computer. She also told me I would get one month free on the 2mb service.

When the STB install takes place, I should call up CS and have the 1mb service taken off. I think this means I have both 1mb and 2mb on my account so I will get a month at 1mb @£17.99 + 2mb @£0. So effectively I don't get anything free.

So anyway, we shall see.

Just called CS and they have scheduled the 26 April for my Samsung STB. I didn't want to risk downgrading to the 1Mbit on my STB in the meantime. I don't fancy any potential cock ups just for the sake of saving £7.

 What aren't you getting free?

You're getting a discount from the normal £24.99p m and your speed has increased, all for no extra charge. (That is if you were on the 750k tier)

:)

One month 2mb service free, like she said.

She seemed to suggest I'd have one month at 17.99 on 1mb then one month on 2mb free. But I think she meant I'd have both services this month, one at 17.99 and the other free. effectively I save 7 quid.

Whatever... so long as the upgrade goes smoothly... what are the chances...

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

Currently on 750K £24.99 a month Broadband.
Phoned NTL up last week, mentioned the fact that I would need a new Samsung STB as my current Old PACE STB wouldn't cope with the 2MB Speed Upgrade. Certainly, will arrange an engineer to come round and replace your STB next day.
Cut a long story short, the engineer did come round, but only had another PACE STB box  and said he had to swap it (even though I already had a PACE box and it was a like-for-like straight swap) because that was the job he had down to do.
I then couldn't get internet or my premium Sky Sports Channels on this new PACE box that he replaced. A week of 4 missed engineer apointments and quite a few phone calls, culmilated in me waiting in all day Friday, after booking the day off work. No engineer called yet again, but my 15th phone call to the faults deparment, resulted in the fact that my newly replaced PACE box hadn't been activated when the engineer installed it. So he re-activated it, and I have at least got my broadband and Sky Sports Channels back.

Apparently all the missed engineer appointments were because they were out of stock of Samsung Boxes due to an unprecedented increase in demand for them. They could have least had the courtesy to tell me that in the first place, instead of me waiting in for them.

I'll now just sit and wait until one of the engineers turn up to replace my PACE box with a Samsung. I ain't having anymore unnecessary time off work.

Is there anyway to get upgraded broadband via email?

I'd like to get the free upgrade from 750k to the 2mb
I currently have broadband through an old STB (Pace)

Unfortunatly, I just switched to longer hours and am not at home until Sundays, which is when NTL is closed.
I emailed their customer service department via NTL's site, but like normal, never received a response.

Is there any chance an NTL employee can help me out here?
