Then you need to phone ntl for the upgrade. You will also need a Samsung STB if you currently have a Pace STB.

He would probably be charged the same price (£19.99 ) but if he decided to change tier then he might be charged full price for that tier. Probably best to ring CS for a definitive answer.

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)

1st attempt : Option 2 : Upgrades arn't happening till 15th March..suppose this whole thread is a figment of my imagination.
2nd attempt : Option 5: Guy Asked for my postcode and name and responded with "there all done". Great I said. Still no upgrade.

Can't use the online updater since NTL screwed up my account info when I first joined and issued me with a new user/pass which isn't recognised.
Guess I'll just wait till my mac address comes through the system. Don't want to risk getting the angry Scottish woman again from the first call.

Im a newbie, got a question to ask, hope someone can help.
I've just updated my internet speed using the link given on this forum from 750kb to 2mb. I think my box (Terayon TJ210) can only download at 1mb, because when i use IRC and Bittorrent to download files, i can only download at max 135kb, which is the 1mbs speed, and my box is very old..
But when i download on Internet explorer, i can download at 250+kb, what does this mean? isit my box?

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)

I went to the autoregister website and selected the 2mb option, worked fine for me, however i've phoned a mate down the road who's on 1.5mb and the website tells him that there aren't any upgrades and to phone CS, which he did, they've told him he can't upgrade yet and that nobody at all should be on the new speeds yet.

It probably means that the torrent you are using isn't giving you your connections maximum speed.

The speed at which you download things, is as only as fast as the server that can give it to you.

Have you tried using a really high end corporate site, like downloading MSN/Yahoo messenger, or a really popular torrent?

Upgraded via the web site. As previously pointed out in this thread the site was updated to show the proper options, however once you get by the password state, on the 750k option it offers to give you a 1.5 X speed increase to 2 MB - someone buy NTL a calculator please!

Yep, easily. I still use a Terayon, & it's easily able to handle my new 2mb connection :)

The *only* people who need a new bit of equipment are those who use a Pace set-top box (STB) for their broadband - if they want the 2mb or 3mb service, they need to have the Pace STB replaced with a Samsung STB.

All of the standalone cable modems (SACMs) that ntl use (Terayon, Motorola, "ntl:home" badged Ambits, etc) can quite easily handle the new speeds.

I'm still on 750k, as my new SACM isn't coming till next Wednesday there's no reason to cause a fuss.

Only a little slower, plus you have a bigger usage limit (1GB per day, rather than 3GB per month).

Although -

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/article/...from-8th-march

Quote:

750K customers with a black PACE Set top box and want to change to the new 2MB speed, need to arrange with ntl a Set top box swap, this will be a free swap.

Note that those 750K broadband customers with a black PACE Set top box, will receive a FREE automatic upgrade to 1MB if they do not arrange a Set top box swap as the black pace set top boxes are only able to provide the maximum of 1MB speed connection. Also note that there will be no change to the usage allowance (1GB daily).

Phone ntl, & check if this will actually happen for you (750k taken up to 1meg, with no change to the "cap") until you get your Samsung.

Are you sure you've been upgraded? I don't mean simply that you've done the online upgrade, but that you *know* it's actually been done?

After I did the online upgrade, I had to manually reboot my Terayon to get it to pick up the new speed (despite the website saying it would happen automatically).

What speed tests have you tried?

Yep, as the news article says.

No auto upgrade, as 300k users may want to stay on 300k & benefit from the old 1GB per day usage limit, rather than go up to 1meg, but have a 3GB per MONTH limit.

EDIT: Oh, looks like you can upgrade online, according to ian@huth :tu: :)

EDIT again: LOL, I'm a muppet. The news article does say 300k users can upgrade online anyway - only says they won't get done automatically.

You are presented at first only with an option to upgrade to 2Mb or 3Mb, but if you continue (ie by clicking 2Mb) after checking your connection it gives the option to upgrade to only 1Mb at the same price with thhe cap.

speed upgrade only applies to new customers as of today unfortunately,as i understand exisiting 750 and 1 meg will be automatically upgraded at a later to be announced date,300 will have to request the upgrade as they will be capped at 3gb d/l's per month, this is what i have been led to believe anyways!

Upgraded to 3Mbit here. Wouldn't let me do it via the webpage (something about the username not being recognised as belonging to the modem), so I phoned up customer services. Waited for three minutes. Spoke to a lovely Scottish lady who took about a minute to upgrade there and then. Asked if I wanted anything else, and if I wanted anyone to ring back tomorrow to make sure everything was okay! Restarted the cable modem, and I just downloaded my first MP3 at 358k/sec :)

Excellent stuff NTL. I'm really really pleased. You've got my custom for as long as you want it :)

To be honest my dabble with file sharing has gone a bit boring now - I used to down load quite a bit :erm: (no comment on what I downloaded) and the speeds were then important. I visted HMV the other day and it was great to actually look around the store and choose some stuff - like the good old days ....

I know that not everyone who uses these high speeds file shares, nor am I saying that those that do download or share stuff are sharing stuff they should not ... but I just have the feeling that this use is bottoming out and it will take newer / better uses (TV / video / video conference calls with family or similar) to make the best of the new speeds (which will obviously get even faster over the next few years).

I could do with some more upload bandwidth for my website stuff but I can put up with 200k (I think the current 1.5 Mbit service is 250k upload..).

I will be saving around £120 a year :)

cheers

Mark

Hi!

Personally, I think until it becomes clear to all that you will never get something for nothing, and in most other walks of life you pay for what you use, then this (your quote) is the reaction you will get. I think people will leave NTL and go to others without CAPS or those with more 'generous' CAPs. But in the end, market forces will dictate an 'averaging' of services through out ISP providers - just look at dial up now for example.......

mark

i'm exactly the same as you Mark, why spend an extra tenner a month for no extra cap?

Some people will find ANY reason to criticise this company. We've tried caps...oops that's seems not to be a big issue now. Then it was 'the upgrades will go wrong', but they haven't. So now we resort to the lack of big letters on the web page.. Someone call Watchdog fast, they're so desperate for material I'm sure they'd run it.

With all that's had to be done the last week or so, I daresay it's not been a priority.

They won't start heavily plugging it until they know for sure it's ok. Very sensible.

I am sure it will be screamed from the rooftops in due course, why wouldn't they?

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)

I voted No on the poll there as I reboot CM and nothing. It was not until I went to Upgrade my Speed online thing that it went to 2mbit/200. Unlike the rest maybe I wont be downloading like a mad man just to see it come down faster, Ive done a broandband test and uploading some files to my Web Space (something I was going to do regardless of the upgrades).

Choose option 5. Be very apologetic and say you realise that there's probably a million other people asking the same thing, but is there any chance they could perform the upgrade for you now?

If you get a scottish person, it seems you get it done :D

It's clear enough on NTLs equivalent BB sales page

Hi upgraded earlier to 2 meg and am very happy.....Done all the speedtests and everything seems fine, however web browsing has become much slower taking an initial 3-4 seconds before it decides to load up the page, and sometimes not loading at all. Now i understand there must be a hell of a lot more people using the web this evening but surely this shouldnt effect browsing. Anyone else experiencing these probs. Not having a moan up as am and have been very happy with NTL.

Cheers
