Demons has (apparently) been cancelled by ITV.

The Simpsons has been picked up for two more 22 episode seasons.

Who saw the season finale of Being Human last night? Absolutely superb, I thought, and well set up for the next series. However, one thing I want to know is:

Spoiler:
How did Nina get that scratch? And why didn't she transform at the same time as George?

Spoiler tagged for those who may have recorded the show last night and haven't watched it yet.

She got it when she ran in the room to get George. I think it was just before Mitchell grabbed her away into the corner.

I looked for evidence of that (I recorded it) but didn't spot it ... however
Spoiler:
I thought the scratches looked too far apart to have come from a hand that hadn't fully transformed into a werewolf claw ...

Figures ... the Tardis set has been re-jigged periodically throughout the show's entire run. And they needed to modify it anyway, to make it ready for HD filming. I have to say I'm not a massive fan of the current organic look. I wonder what they'll come up with now?

S/he would have to be, really ... The White Mountains is a bit of a boys' own adventure. The only significant female character only lasts a couple of chapters before coming to a sticky end. A modern family blockbuster would need there to be a strong leading young female alongside the boys. So it's either invent a fourth character to join them, or else change one of the three.

Anyway, look on the bright side, they might cast Clemence Poesy.

Well, yes, they would have to really, seeing as in the TV version Eloise's life is 'merely suspended', whereas in the book she and the other specimens are dead and on display like a case of butterflies. Far more chilling and sci fi but prolly not what the BBC wanted for Saturday teatime...

dilli-theclaw 30-03-2009 11:59

Well, with luck, they won't mess up any film like they so oviously have the new Star Trek film. But I suspect that's a pretty faint hope.

I'm not sure why they'd 'have to'. They didn't seem to have any problems with changing the books in other areas to. Adding Black Guards - expanding the whole chateux thing, shortening the time left before the ship arrived that kind of thing.

Still, I guess it was all designed to make it more 'interesting'.

At least they didn't make the prequel - now THAT would have been bad :)

Chris 30-03-2009 13:11

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other Snippets

Heh ... The Day The Tripods Came, or When the Tripods Came, or something? Talk about cashing in. I read that while I was at school. You're right, it was a bit poor. It had more holes in it than a colander.

As to why the Beeb would 'have to' have Eloise being rescued at the end of any third series, I only meant they would have to in order to be internally consistent with their own version of the story, seeing as she was seen in The City of Gold and Will's Master explicitly stated that she wasn't dead.

I can see why the BBC changed things around. The City of Gold and Lead, as written, is pretty bleak and alien and would have cost a king's ransom to film. The series was expensive as it was - it would probably have become prohibitively so if they had had to construct alien backdrops for every single scene inside the city. As it was, they were able to get away with some location filming and easily-constructed sets that could have been alien, but then could have been anywhere else as well. It would also have been pretty difficult to keep up the pace and the tension if virtually the whole thing had been performed with the actors inside helmets, which would have been necessary if they had stuck closely to the book.

As for the Black Guards, well they conveniently keep up the pressure on the heroes without the need for too many costly FX shots of the Tripods.

Mind you, some of the changes were gratuitous nonsense. The Cognosc, for example, completely shatters the whole premise. Nice one, whoever dreamed that up. Not.

2 bits of news here, the first about Dollhouse and the second is about Chuck. I'd provide a link but my laptop is going weird and won't let me. It's from E! Online though.

Quote:

• Dollhouse: For those Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles fans who are still hurt by its cancellation, you're about to jump for joy. Summer Glau is heading to Dollhouse this season, playing Bennett, a Dollhouse employee who shares a past with Echo (Eliza Dushku). Glau is recurring and joining the likes of Alexis Denisof, Jamie Bamber, Michael Hogan and Keith Carradine, who all guest star this season.
I think Joss listened to the fans on that one... It's like everyone knew about it before she did!

Quote:

• Chuck: Superman is mentoring Chuck this season! Not literally, but Brandon Routh joins the cast in a multiepisode arc as Shaw, the new leader of the Intersect project. Look for the man of steel starting in the fourth episode.

If the rest of the film is like that (2012) then i want to go see it.

I quite liked it, it looked fun. I thought the the bit where the pilot was checking his T&Ps whilst waiting for clearance and the quake was coming. Sadly, I know quite a few pilots would actually do this.

Don't know. I still wish to reserve judgement. It does look a little bit grittier, and somewhat edgier, but how much I don't know. I don't think it should go too far down that route, but we will see.

Did anyone watch defying gravity last night?

I did and I thought it was /ok/ I looked it up on wiki to find it doesn't appear to have a second season planned and ends on a cliff-hanger (so if you look it up watch for spoilers).

The Radio Times reviewer had it pretty spot on I thought - too much time and attention lavished on making it look good at the expense of producing a tightly written, believable script.

The tone and direction was all over the place as well, veering from soap opera one minute to oooh theres something nasty in the attic! the next. It was, as you say, /ok/ but unless it dramatically improves in the next week or two I won't bother following it to its conclusion.

Watchable but not compelling, I thought. I'm not keen on the jumping back and forth in flashbacks but I probably keep going for another couple of weeks.

I'd read that it was likely to be canned, so didn't bother with it.

It sounds like Dollhouse has been canned. Katee Sackhoff is going to appear on The Big Bang Theory, too.

If Dollhouse has actually been canned, then I hope they finish the story and not end it on a cliff-hanger like T:TSCC.

Well its just getting pulled off the schedule for a month or something.

Doesn't mean it will get canned but its looking likely.

The SyFy channel is making a US version of Being Human. Its ordered 13 episodes for later in 2010.

More episodes of Chuck are now looking certain - it seems there will now be 18 (or 19) episodes, and they may start showing in January [2010] rather than March.

Last i heard, they were going to show the planned 13 episodes, but were not happy with the ratings, so have pulled it for the November Sweeps, it should be back after them. Its not likely to get 22 eps ......

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other Snippets

ABC have effectivly cancelled Eastwick, they have opted not to order any more eps, which is basically a death sentance for it.

It looks like the film 2012 maybe followed up by a TV series, set [after the events] in 2013. Plans are apparently in development.

Trailer for "Kick-Ass", from the same comic book writer as "Wanted".

Quote:

'Kick-Ass' tells the story of average teenager Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a comic-book fanboy who decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name -- Kick-Ass -- assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There’s only one problem standing in his way: Kick-Ass has absolutely no superpowers.

I haven't seen much advertising for the new Day of the Triffids 2 part mini series on BBC.

Anyway it's on 28 / 29th of December on BBC 1 and BBC HD at 9pm both nights.

One of my most read stories ever, I am so looking forward to this.

Just as long as they dont wipe them out with sea water ;)

Well I watched the old 50's one with Natalie last night, and realised how far off the book it was lol.

Still it was more than made up for by the original bbc TV production.

Which you can get cheap here.

Once you've seen the new production you may also want to read the sequel by Simon Clarke - Night of the Triffids
