Possibly the reason the additional Sky Sports HD channels haven't arrived yet. If this does launch, maybe this will come at the same time. Watch this space I guess!

Yes, perhaps the reason for the delay of SS3&4 HD is because they want to launch them all altogether. As Sky Sports 5 hasn't been officially announced yet, I also wonder if this is the reason for the secrecy surrounding the launch of the missing Sky Sports missing HD channels.

As for Virgin getting the channel, surely it's a must. Just not sure about HD version of the channel I'm afraid.

It's crossed my mind that Sky have done another Sky Atlantic on VM and let them have the full stable of channels, only to launch a new channel afterwards.

There has also been speculation about where Sky will get the SD slot for thix channel, but I think that Sky may launch this as an HD channel only. Perhaps they are going to employ the same strategy as they did when wanting to migrate customers from analogue to digital ie the carrot of new services at no extra cost to those on the new service, then the stick approach of slowly dropping the SD variants.

The popularity of sport, the cost of dual transmissions and the length of time that HD has been around makes me think that this is a viable strategy for Sky to adopt.

But can we rule out Sky Sports 5 being a rebranding of the red button service/Sky Sports Xtra service? It's a possibility, surely?

The way that it currently loops through on the test/glitch to the info about the channel makes me think that the EPG could stay the same with SS5 being an "interactive" service activated via the red button is possible. Potentially you would just "activate" Sky Sports 5 by pressing the red button and it wouldn't appear on the EPG as a channel (as with their red button content currently).

It's a possibility yes, but I think that Sky would prefer to market that they are launching a brand new channel at no extra cost.

The saving on the EPG fee that other broadcasters would make by using this method of delivery doesn't really apply to Sky owned channels, as the fee is fed straight back into the Sky machine.

Seems plausible. Just not sure why I'd have to activate it.

Perhaps "activate" means press the button to launch, rather than 'activate' as in call Customer Services

It tries to connect but comes up with a fault after about 10 seconds. There is actually footage on the channel, it's SKY Sports 1. The shots I've posted is what happens when you push the red button so it could very well be the new "Red Button" facility behind SKY Sports.

Taking on board all the posts and suggestions, I think "SKY Sports 5" won't be on the EPG. It's red button with a new dress and make-up :D There just isn't enough European football to support a new dedicated 24/7 channel. Saying that Boxnation only shows about 7 hours of live content per week with the rest of the content being repeats so you never know.

I've not subscribed to the Sports channels since I dumped Sky In favour of VM years ago.

If Sky Sports 5 is a linear tv channel and if VM take it or at least leave space on the EPG for it, that tells us how VM will organise the numbering of the sports channels in their forthcoming rejig.

If VM don't take SS5, everything will stay the same except Eurosport and Eurosport HD will move down the EPG two places to make way for the missing Sky HD channels.

If VM do take SS5 or allow room for its addition in the future, then the Sky SD channels will be placed on 501 and the Sky HD channels will start on 511.

Place your bets!

Could it be that Sky Sports 5 will actually appear as the app mentioned in the press release below?

I think you're probably right. Sky have a good track record at strong branding so they are 'upping' the red button content as another Sky Sports 'Channel'. After all isn't Sky Sports Xtra still available as the online "Sky Sports 5???" Could be just the re-branding of that but available through the dish???

Now they are sneaky of course. It could well be that they don't give VM access to it's full content, or maybe not HD content.

That said the 2 parties have made a deal which includes an App/Red button facilities for VM, so who knows?!?!?

CHAD Have you Tweeted Sky Sports about it??? They might give u more info as you're a Sky subscriber?! :)
