Just answered a knock at the door to find a young lad aged about 12 standing there. We'd left the front door ajar on a security chain to allow some fresh air into the house and he and his 2 chums had seen it and thought they ought to warn us our front door was open just in case any dodgy people were about. I thanked them all for their concern and was left thinking how nice it was that they took the time to tell us. I'm hoping they weren't casing the joint... :)

Nope - but then, I think most phones, if you put them in your back pocket and sit down, may exhibit bendy tendencies....

There's an ancient Japanese proverb which roughly translated goes like this: 'He who buy big expensive mobile phone need buy manbag for keep it straight' :)

Well I've almost finished my porch and thought it was time for a picture. I'm very happy with the results even though I say so myself. Of course I've learned a few things along the way and would tackle certain aspects differently but I'm a hell of a lot better with a silicone gun now than I ever was before I started this. :)

Thanks Jo. :)

I'm so well insulated I don't feel the cold too much but Mrs Osem is the complete opposite and it was she who finally cajoled me into getting on with it. Now it's done I'll be thinking about changing the old front door I've always hated and replacing all the old white paintwork surrounding it with stained wood to match the porch. That's probably a job for next year though...

First 1/2 Marathon in over a year and managed a 1:47 ish time.

WELL under my 2 hour target and a bit surprising given my almost entire lack of long training runs.

I'll see if I can walk in the morning before I'm totally happy but right now it's looking good for my 16 mile torture session (aka the Southside Six) next month.

So pleased you were under your target time, well done.

Decided to get the living room all done for Christmas :) only problem is that I would like to move the tivo box to the other side of room but the problem is I do not have enough cable. My question is can we do this ourselves or would it be better to get VM in to do it?

The excitement on Drew's face today when I gave him the deposit for the China 2016 tour as he did not know what his father and I had decided. He has been told that this will be the only school trip he will get. We felt this was a trip of a lifetime for him to have a truly educational and culture experience. I just wish they took the parents LOL as I will never experience the great wall of China, walking through the streets or the Shanghai night boat. The downside is no holiday's for us for the next two years. When I was at school, our school trips if we were lucky was to Stirling Castle or Edinburgh Castle.

What a fantastic experience you have gifted to Drew. As Osem says, I too am sure Drew will never forget such an amazing trip and it takes special parents to make such a sacrifice in order to enrich their child's life. :tu:

My parents sent me to Paris when I was just 11 and to this day I remember the feeling of awe I had when I stood on the uppermost observation platform of the Eiffel Tower looking out over all those places I had only seen in books prior to the trip. Nor will I forget the feeling of sheer terror I felt climbing back down the spiral staircase then those endless steps to ground level. :D

Yeah, she's pleased because we thought that even though we showed proof we had a ticket they would have said it was our job to make sure the ticket was displayed properly, so that is a relief that they cancelled it. Thank God, money is tight enough this month for her as an unexpected electrician bill and new tyres on her car has made money really tight.

Been taking Osem Jnr out for some lessons in his shiny new car covered with L plates. I'm happy to say he's done pretty well and I've still got what little hair I had. :) Fingers crossed he carries on the good work.

I must say it's a really nice car with loads of kit and much to my surprise the tiny 1.2 engine copes well with 4 adults. It seems solidly built with no nasty squeaks or rattles evident so we're hoping it'll be a nice reliable car for him to keep a few years.

Yes he owes me more than a few miles I can tell you... :) I dare say there'll be a few more before he passes his test but I don't want him to rush it and would far rather he gets plenty of experience before he's on his own.

Very wise Osem, unfortunately it took our Steven 3 times before he passed, and when he did we bought him a wee second hand Corsa 51 plate that was 4 years ago now Gosh time flies by he still has his wee car although he is buying himself a brand new one at the of the year and they students are poor  bank of Mum & Dad LOL can't complain he works part time at Sainsburys and has saved hard.
Once he passed we limited his driving for the first few months till he gained some more experience as my brother in law who is a policeman advised us to do that.

Yup, good old fashioned thrift. :) It's a subject far too many folks have forgotten about. Our lad doesn't smoke, hardly drinks, doesn't change his phone every 5 minutes etc. and consequently has managed to save up for a rainy day. They should teach it in schools because clearly a great many parents can't.

Hugh 12-10-2014 10:31

Re: The Happy Thought Thread Part 4

Hard to teach common sense - kids learn by example (mainly), and they mirror their parents behaviours.

When my lad wanted to go work in a South African horse farm for six weeks, he had to get two part-time jobs (whilst in sixth form) to pay for the flights; similarly when he wanted to go visit his college chums in South Carolina (he did his 2nd year of Uni there).

He wanted these things, he had to work to get them - and I think he appreciated them more for it.

He wanted these things, he had to work to get them - and I think he appreciated them more for it.

Yes I think Steven saves some of his wages each month is because he can still remember going to the building society each month with me putting money in his cash builder account the very same account he still saves with today. Young Drew has the same savings account with the Nationwide building society and like his big brother will be given the book when he is 18 if we feel he is sensible enough if not it will be 21. I know many of the young have no idea about savings nowadays as buy now pay later schemes are so easy for them to get IMO.

Yes - it's the "pay later" bit that causes problems.....

All too often nowadays, it's more of a "have now, walk away from the debt" scenario. :erm:

I was brought up it you have not got the money for it, save for it and then you will appreciate it more. I must admit I think that is true.

Scottish school holidays (October week) and Drew is bored already and it's just the first day. He asked what he could do so I suggested that he cleaned the car out and he said how much, I said £1.00 to which he replied £5.00 and you have a deal LOL so then I said £3.00 to which he accepted. So he is out in the driveway cleaning the inside of my car if you ask me £3.00 is a bargain :)

Nice. Maybe next time they will free your other footsie so that you can have a matching pair. Just take care sweetie and don't take any chances with this newly exposed foot. :)

Well against all the odds Yodel have delivered a VM HD box self install kit this afternoon. :)

Looks like a cinch to fit but it then needs a phone call to VM high command to enable it. :( Hope it's not Bagara Bob.)

Why can't I login to my VM account and enable it from there? Why does it always need a pointless phone call?

If it is like a modem self install then the phonecall is automated and very quick.

Opening the back door and letting the dog out to the quietness of the early hours of the morning, and the only sound is the odd bird singing just beautiful :) even is the weather is slight drizzle.

Sorry for those of you who have less than perfect weather but we have a clear blue sky with the sunlight turning all the trees into beacons of red and gold. I think this may be one of my favorite times of the year. :)

You can all send your dodgy weather here :)

I don't like a bright sunny day as it hurts my eyes.

So as I say - send all your dull overcast / rainy days my way ;)

I still had to talk to an operator but at least he spoke and understood English. Couple of reboots and we now have glorious HD channels. :) Nothing there that couldn't have been done on-line through myvirgin account though.

I'm also happy that it has a number display so I can set a channel for remote viewing without putting the main TV on.

Now I just need to tie in the RF modulator to the DVD recorder output SCART (outputs composite video of cable feed when DVD is off) and set it to the same channel the old Samsung box was outputting (52) and the new installation is complete.

It wasn't 'John' then... :)

Presumably you'll be offering heavily discounted installations to CF folks on your friends list... ;)

Actually I think it was Jock. :D

Fitted the modulator this morning, set to 52 and all the other TVs now get the VM box output (SD while the box is on an HD channel) as well as the DVD HDD recorder output. Job done. :)
