I’m pleased we (in Yorkshire) don’t do it this way - we’d be paying around £614 pa, rather than the current £408…

The charging system in Scotland is more similar to England and Wales than you might think.

If you don’t have a water meter in England your bill is based on rateable value. If you don’t have a water meter in Scotland (and very few do) your bill is based on council tax bands. Council tax valuation and rateable value are just two different ways of valuing your property. Council tax bands are derived from a sale valuation while rates are (more or less) an estimate of your property’s rental value.

AFAIK the difference is because water in England and wales was privatised before council tax was introduced, so rates were the only figure available for charging based on property value. In Scotland water is not privatised and bills are collected by councils on the council tax bill, so they have to use council tax as a the basis for the water bill.

Mines on the rateable value, £24 a month, if you lived in a council house in certain London Boroughs your water was included in your rent

Re: Moans and Pet Hates - Part 8

The paedophile hunting group I’m part of has been chasing one particularly nasty individual for coming up to 2 years. I mean yeah they’re shitbags by the very nature of why they’re on our radar but this guy has been extremely clever and evasive. We rarely encounter anyone with this guy’s methods which led us to suspect he was either ex-police or has a a strong working knowledge of how hunting groups work.

Anyway his trail went cold in the autumn but reappeared a few weeks before Christmas and without giving our methods away he made a fatal mistake and inadvertently gave us all the information we needed for a very likely prosecution. He even suggested a meet which of course we attended.

I never get involved with the chat, I tried it once and it turned my stomach so I agreed to never do it it again. Instead my role is to gather enough intel to ensure we have the right person, and I’m also the “muscle” on meets in case the perp (or passers-by) decide to kick off.

Anyway the meet went ahead a few days in to January, the police (as is usually the case) were very impressed with the evidence pack and how we conducted the sting.

Fast forward to today, the police called us to say the CPS had decided to take no further action

We couldn’t believe it, we had all the usual evidence we routinely gather, even the cop who called us was at a loss for words, he was convinced this guy would have his day in court, if not spending time inside.

Doesn’t happen often but when it does it drives me nuts.

Paul 11-02-2025 22:22

Re: Moans and Pet Hates - Part 8

Seems odd, did they say why ?

Russ 11-02-2025 22:35

Re: Moans and Pet Hates - Part 8

CPS are notorious for not giving reasons for their decisions. Keeping in mind the information we were given was second-hand it was implied their decision was based on the (perceived) lack of strength of evidence.

Again this was mystifying as we had him on numerous occasions discussing horrendous things he intended to do to our decoy, he sent about 10 to 15 obscene imagines of himself and arranged to meet 6 times, albeit he only followed through with one of them, aggravated by the fact he booked a double room at a Travelodge and when the police searched him they found condoms and lube.

I won’t go in to the other details of what we had on him but all that alone has been enough to send other predators down in the past.

Bl**dy recycling.

It used to be one big black wheelie bin.

Then a smaller black wheelie bin, and all recycling in one plastic bag because the council spent millions on a sorting machine.

Then a food recycling bin appeared.

Then a blue reusable sack for paper and card, and a red reusable sack for plastic and metal, and a blue bin for glass.

Then purple bags for hygiene waste.

The red and blue sacks were emptied into a lorry with 2 sides to keep the recycled materials separate, but one side always filled before the other, so the vehicle had to make extra trips back to the depot to empty it all, so now they use one lorry for blue and one for red.

So that means that there are up to 6 vehicles visiting each address once a week.

And now there are strong rumours that black bins will only be emptied every 4 weeks!

This is something that often gets brought up, especially by followers of hunter groups.

My take on it is that if judges, etc., were "in on it," then showing undue leniency would be like having a massive neon arrow over them saying, "Nonce!" and drawing attention to the possibility that they are active participants.

There's no real way of knowing why these things happen. Lawmakers and enforcers have to follow guidelines for all types of crimes. It's frustrating as hell, but it won't make any of us quit.

Ditto, and today I saw 2 council workers in hi-viz walking around hand-picking it all up again. Apart from the lot that had blown into my garden once again.

That's the first time I had seen that in a few decades.

In my Town we have a slim black bin with a black lid for general rubbish, a larger black bin with a blue lid for recycling and an all brown bin for garden waste, and a small green caddy for food.

They are collected every two weeks (The garden on is collect the same day as recycling), and the food weekly.

I could easily do monthly.

eBay and their ridiculous new buyer protection rules.

Sold my Samsung Z Fold 4 two weeks ago and the buyer has just reported the item and I'm being forced to accept a return and refund for the following reason 'a friend told me the phone should open flat'

I mean WTF! Phone was in perfect condition and totally nothing wrong with it having been warranty repaired by Samsung just over 12 months ago. 90% of the phone was replaced and renewed. Only the main board was kept. So i know there was nothing wrong and photos on the listing of course show it fully open.

Can I dispute or respond in any way? NOPE!

To compound things even further the buyer added this terrible photo. It actually looks like the phone has been dropped or damaged by them. Bottom edge by the hinge looks severely damaged and out of shape and even the screen, which is meant to have a crease down the middle where it folds looks like it is not right. Have also added the photo I took before shipping.

Well I managed, after searching eBay for a long time to raised my own case against the buyer and stated they have misused the return process.

Using the phone for two weeks then raising a return request using the details I posted before.

I already got a resolution and ebay ruled in my favour. Phew. They agreed they misused the process. I don't get the phone back, however eBay have issued a full refund to the buyer and eBay have covered it so I'm not out of pocket. So sort of good resolution.

I'm still mad they get to keep the phone though, essentially getting a free phone out of it

As set out in your terms, from 1 April 2025, the price of your Virgin Media main services will increase by the Retail Price Index (RPI) rate of inflation, plus an additional 3.9%.

RPI was announced at 3.6%, which means that from your April bill your monthly price will go up by 7.5%.

Made the mistake of updating my Bitwarden add-on today.
Seems that in December they made a moronic update to the UI.

Its absolutely horrendous, usability went right out the window.
Why do these people always mess with things that dont need messing with.

[Switchbot did the same at the end of 2024].

I dont think id recomment BW now, unless you run the older versions.
I could not stand it for long, and reverted back to the last version before the UI changes.

If it’s "competency based" selection, what they’re looking for (usually) is how you match in experience against the job description - I used to put the job description section (for example - budget management) then cut/paste the appropriate part of my CV against that (rinse and repeat for the "necessary/must have" sections, then as many as possible for the "nice to have" sections of the job description).

This makes it much easier for the application reviewer to see that you match the job description requirements, rather than them having to search through your CV to find (or perhaps, miss) the matching information.

Did you not know the XL was the same as a regular Pro but bigger?

Is it a good enough improvement over your old Pixel? Tried turning your dog into an Elephant yet with a click? Hehe

Only cloned it and set up the theme so far. I use Nova launcher and Icon Packer so it looks how I like it and with Novo it sets all the icons up how you like it

Leeds/Bradford 'airport'. They only have one bus to transport passengers off planes, hence an hour wait after landing going nowhere... It then goes downhill after going into the shed they call a ' Terminal'.

Stopped using LBA years ago hated the drive out to the A1 at stupid o clock in the morning. Much easier to go up the A1 to Newcastle instead

Re: Moans and Pet Hates - Part 8

I ran into Mr hero today. After getting off the Elizabeth line at Farringdon I took the lift to platform 3. It was busy at the lifts and I had around 5 minutes to get to the platform or I'd be waiting half hour for another train because as always a shortage of train staff meant a train was cancelled. Anyway at the lift there's two lifts. One came and I know these lifts don't wait around you need to jump on. Mr hero waiting at the lift said allow those to get off first which I was I just knew to get on quickly. This guy is calling the shots and the lift closes and goes with anyone on because Mr hero knew it all but knew nothing at all. I then got in a little argument with him but someone else observing it all came to the lift area and said ignore him.

The argument: "let the people off and allow those waiting to get on" "you're able to get on the escalators" "how do you sleep at night"

My response was simply "ok" "you don't know of any my needs"

The guy who told me to ignore him replied "I sleep well at night"

Mr hero is an idiot. While making time to address me he screwed those waiting for the lift. I wasn't going to let him ruin my day. I got on the other lift that came and simply said to him "well done". I had 2 minutes to spare waiting for my train.

Then someone who loves performing arts decided to start a musical on the train. Really loud singing. Luckily I was on the fast train missing a load of stops which reduced the time I spent on the train.

Why are some people so stupid that they think they are invulnerable, like us poor peasants?

A very shiny Audi TT was parked opposite my car, but something looked wrong. I walked over and saw that all 4 low-profile tyres were totally flat, and it had obviously been driven on its rims for a while. The tyres were a mess too.

I wrote a note "DO NOT DRIVE THIS CAR, IT HAS FOUR FLAT TYRES".

I was about to put it under the wiper when a tiny, irate lady shouted "NO NOT TOUCH MY CAR!!"

She stormed over, so I just handed her the note, She didn't even glance at it, but just got into the car and roared off at speed with the wheels screaming.

I wonder how long before she wraps it around a lamppost?

Surely it must have been making a horrific noise, and vibrating back through the steering too.

I had a car stolen when I was in my early 20s and when it was discovered, joy-ridden and with one shredded tyre, I drove it half a mile back to a friend’s driveway rather than pay for recovery. Just driving it on one rim made the worst racket in the world.

It "screamed" as it was driven away. A mix of metallic graunching and rubber squeals, but mostly too nasty a sound to fully explain. But it did sound very expensive. Quite a few people turned to see what was making all the racket.

Parking in my street is a joke, it's so bad that I sometimes have to park 2/3 streets away.

The biggest problem is the commercial vehicles that take up 2 spaces, then there to double yellow that are placed in wrong places.

Wow clearly people are abusing your street..... You should phone the police like Paul said...

Knobheads in the gym who hog the machines. In particular groups of 3 or 4 little chavs who use a machine one after the other and have a nice long chat with each other in between sets.

Even worse (like tonight) when you ask if they have many more to do, they give you a look as if you’ve steaming turds hanging out of your mouth then deliberately go slower and take their time even more just because they know you’re waiting.

Absolute bell-ends the lot of them.

I rage quit Pure Gym for this very reason . Sick of people with no clue doing 10 reps then 10 minutes in their phone. Just do my weights at home now and cardio outside

I used to be a member of The Gym in Swansea and I loved that place, massive gym, machines well spaced out and free parking but it got so bad I started going at 4am just so there’d be no-one else there. I kept that up for about 4 years but as I crept closer to 50 I just couldn’t keep it up and for the past year or two I’ve been going to a smaller independent gym that’s open 6am till 9.30pm and is around the corner from Mrs Russ. It’s a decent place if I get there at around an hour before closing time but I went earlier today (I rarely go on Saturdays) and the selfish chav knobheads seem to love the place at weekends.

A first world problem but…

Came downstairs expecting my coffee to be already and waiting for me but the coffee machine decided it needed a 15 minute security update

1. I told it to install all update types automatically
2. Why the hell does it need a 15 min security update in the first place ????

At least one person in our area is burning painted or treated wood in their wood burner. The stench is awful, but the council won't investigate.

---------- Post added at 11:16 ---------- Previous post was at 10:55 ----------

Uni students parking around here have made parking for residents, etc. a major problem. Petitions and aggro have pushed one of our councillors into action. A Public Consultation ended yesterday, with many living just outside the area demanding that their area is also included.

In other areas with the system in place, residents still can't find a parking space as there is zero enforcement. The annual fees have risen to £30 for the first car, £60 for the second, and no permit for any other cars.

And to top it all off, the council's own policy, apparently following UK policy, states "Resident Parking Schemes will NOT be installed in areas where a majority of properties benefit from off‐street parking". Only 2 houses in our street do not have off-street parking.
