I'm sure he would be better than Carragher who was on soccer saturday the other week, for a start we won't need subtitles to understand what hes saying.

Bent for £24m, Carroll for £35m. It's hard to adequately express how ridiculously overpriced English players can be.

But to put it in perspective:

Inter received Samuel Eto'o AND £40m in exchange for Ibrahimovic.

Barcelona bought David Villa for £34m.

Chelsea bought Didier Drogba for £24m.

Arsenal bought Robin Van Persie for £2.75m.

Neither Bent or Carroll are fit to lick any of the above player's boots and there are countless other examples.[COLOR="Silver"]

So does Darren Bent's goalscoring record count for nothing? He's not perma-injured like Robin van Pers...sorry, RvP.

I am actually.

Gave you a run for your money.

Not that it will stop AF disrespecting lower sides by putting out his second team.

MU are, and always have been under his management, arrogant.

They, and SAF, can afford to be though ;)

Nope, his goals certainly do count. But there's a reason why Bent has never and almost certainly never will play for a top team or succeed at a team which plays anything other than basic, direct football. The top strikers have far more to their game than Bent does and that includes those who score less.

...Maybe. But, and this is the biggie, he scores goals, and lots of them. That's something every team needs, surely?
Look at this way, if Darren Bent scores 20+ goals (next season), which is he capable of doing, and, I dunno, Villa fluke a Champs League place, surely that's value for money? Big if's and buts I accept, but he is a proven scorer at Prem level.

They're such big ifs and buts, i can't answer the question. If Villa made the CL, it clearly wouldn't just be down to his goals. If he'd be able to provide more to his game, maybe it actually would be possible.

For £24m, i'd expect a striker who scores, assists, links up play, etc. He only does the former to any great level, as his opta stats will back-up. Like i said; hence why the biggest and best teams have never once shown an interest in him. At least Andy Carroll, to some degree, has shown he's got a bit of depth to his game.

I'm not saying I disagree, but whichever team buys him are gonna get goals, and lots of 'em, yes he is lousy at everything else, but compared to some transfers, his fee isn't that bad. And I do like Andy Carroll, typical No.9 but I think £35m is slightly inflated..But, again, he has massve potential and if he gets 20-25 goals for the next 5 years, that equates to £7m a season. Not a bad figure to pay for (potentially) that amount of goals.

No amount of trophies or money can buy class though, there is never a need to be arrogant imo.

Anyway as some of you may be aware the popular BBC 606 sports forums are closing soon due to the budget cuts, luckily a replacement has been launched....

Thanks Russ btw.

Strange old bit of logic applied to that transfer window. There's no way Torres was worth £50M based on current form but that was the asking price because he was "not for sale" and it's what what City probably would have paid in an intevitable summer bidding war. Similarly Andy Carroll was "not for sale" being Newcastle's key goalscoring threat but Mike Ashley knew what the remaining cash balance would have been after the signing of Luis Suarez so that became the going rate.

To summarise: Roman's wallet is £50M lighter on that one transfer, Ajax have a decent pot of cash to work their magic on some more young players/pay off some debt, Newcastle have a pot of cash to strengthen their squad providing Ashely doesn't blow it all at the roulette table and Liverpool have 2 good players. Everyone's a winner.

Everyone's a winner presuming Newcastle don't blow it and get relegated ;) , they can't spend teh money until the summer now. That really will burn a hole in Ashley's packet...poker anyone

why do I have the funny feeling that Newcastle are in trouble????

Newcastle vs Arsenal started at 1500 and the Toon are already 0-3 down.

They don't have a first team striker I don't think. It would be unfair to suggest that this is their season from now on though. They were with Carroll for weeks prior to the transfer, they can cope.

This game isn't over yet but the first goal may have disrupted their plans somewhat. I am guessing that they were going to try and hold Arsenal at bay and go for a draw, maybe get a break.

They are now 4 - 0 down as I wrote that. Ouch.

4 - 4 Shambles from Arsenal.

First time a team has ever lost a 4 - 0 lead in the Premiership.
