Yup,

"A quarter of motorists committing 20mph speed offences have been caught on just two roads in Wales, figures reveal. Enforcement along the A4102 Swansea Road at Gellideg, Merthyr Tydfil - which links the A465 Heads of the Valleys road and the A470 - has caught more than 8,000 drivers in 10 months."

And fatalities are down, which surely is the main thing. https://www.theguardian.com/world/ar...t-figures-show

If drivers had common sense we wouldn't need any speed limits, but they don't, so we need them. On some roads, cars parked either side, kids about, even 20 mph is too fast.

We all know that these figures have been cherry-picked, and "The statistics only include road collisions reported by the police, which resulted in personal injury."

They have not been cherry-picked. Just because they go against your narrative there’s no need say such silly things.

Travels on the trains at times :banghead: It was eventful returning home on the train. First I just miss the tube, the next one was cancelled so I was waiting around. Then some trains to Brighton were cancelled (fastest route home) so I get on the amended train getting off at East Croydon to catch a connection to Crawley. Normally I arrive on platform 3 and departure on 3, very easy but not today. I arrive on platform 3 then get told to go to platform 2 to then be told while the train was pulling into the station to go back to platform 3. Plus the fact you can't even hear the announcements clearly when trains are pulling in and out of the station.

Well if nothing is moving, thats not a surprise. ;)

Also, unless you put the limit back up, and fatalities go up again, you cant really prove they are related.

The police were asked to provide data and they asked "What data? How do you want it collated?

Accident reports between pedestrians and riders/drivers have many criteria on what boxes to tick, including:

Lack of attention / loss of concentration of a pedestrian.
Lack of attention / loss of concentration of a rider/driver.
Excessive speed with relation to set limits or conditions.
Alcohol, drug and/or prescription use of a pedestrian.
Alcohol, drug and/or prescription use of a rider/driver.

"With regard to pedestrian casualties, ‘pedestrian failed to look properly’ with ‘pedestrian careless, reckless or in a hurry’ were named as factors in 4,100 casualty collisions – 23% of the overall total.

‘Pedestrian crossing road masked by stationary or parked vehicle’ with ‘pedestrian failed to look properly’ accounted for 1,961 casualties (11%).

‘Pedestrian failed to judge vehicle’s path or speed’ with ‘pedestrian careless, reckless or in a hurry’ caused 1,204 casualties (7%), while ‘pedestrian crossing road masked by stationary or parked vehicle’ with ‘pedestrian careless, reckless or in a hurry’ was responsible for 1,013 casualties (6%)."

All the while ignoring drivers being at fault? I wonder why…

Seems indeed like cherry-picking.

Paul 14-12-2024 00:55

Re: Moans and Pet Hates - Part 8

Drivers (cars) are supposed to be on the road, pedestrians generally are not.
There are exceptions of course, like a proper pedestrian crossing for example.
So I would think its unusual that a pedestrian getting hit on the road is the drivers fault.

Speeding of course is driver error, but even a speeding car cannot hit a pedestrian if they are not on the road in the first place.

Russ 14-12-2024 06:46

Re: Moans and Pet Hates - Part 8

Pedestrians on the roads are classed as vulnerable users. Vehicle drivers have to be aware at all times of hazards, that’s why the most common conviction in RTAs are “driving without due care and attention”. As unfair as this may seem, it’s the driver’s responsibility to prevent collisions with pedestrians.

And keep in mind colliding with pedestrians is only a percentage of RTAs. Plenty of other scenarios have contributed to the drop in accidents since the reduction to 20 mph.

Is it annoying that roads we drove 30mph on for decades are one we now have to go slower on? Absolutely but the stats don’t lie and they’re certainly not cherry picked.

My next moan!

Just got back home from visiting family for a week and it looks like my boiler stopped working yesterday evening. Smells like something is fried on the control panel PCB although I don't have a visual on it. Hoping that when I can get the plumber I want in that the PCB is easily replaceable because the boiler is 27 years old. Looked online and it maybe available to purchase but need a visual to check the model number.

House is 13c now with 1 oil radiator running and I'm glad I have a working emersion heater on my tank for the hot water.

27 years old ? Probably time you got a new one.
I replaced mine 2.5 years ago, when it was 21 years old.
They fitted it on that hottest day ever in the UK, 19 July 2022.

It's a 2 bedroom house and I'm trying to drag it out as long as possible considering the cost involved, but if I'm still in this house before Gas boilers get banned I will replace with another Gas boiler.

I've managed to work out what PCB control board is in it and ordered a new one, I'm amazed it is still available, so hopefully when I can get my plumber in that will fix the issue, so not a complete financial shock to my system.

However I've got an oil radiator as well as a fan in the living room so that's going to cost alot more on my electric bill as well as heating my hot water with my immersion heater but that's better than being home with a house that's 12c and no hot water.

Managed to get my vintage(27th year old) boiler fixed yesterday, the Fan was the issue.

This is still in the moans thread because some parts are obsolete, I have to plan to get a New System Boiler installed around May time as I don't want a heat pump.

Most people would get their plumber to diagnose the fault.

It needs to be swapped over as I believe I won't be able to install a gas boiler in 6 years with them being banned and doing it now my plumber thinks it'll be a bit cheaper.

I had something like this in my rib cage donkey years ago and it was murder every time I coughed, this lasted several months and then I sneezed and it was suddenly gone, I put it down to a trapped nerve. Hopefully yours will be gone in a few weeks.

I was not the only one being woken in the wee hours by a family yelling at each other in the street when they got back from work.

One big neighbour made a noise complaint, was ignored "due to racial sensitivities", and was then almost arrested for going nose-to-nose to the head of the noisy family.

It all went quiet for a few weeks, but now we are being subjected to an electric airpump being used to inflate car tyres well before dawn and after sunset. The same family!

Stupid Apple Devices.
We have an old iPad I set up about 2 years ago for grand-daughter.
She doesnt use it now as we replaced it with an Amazon Fire HD (Android :)).

I want to turn off the screen time now, but apparently I cant remember the screentime passcode I set.
After several tries its now locking it for 1,5,15 minutes, so I contact apple support for help on resetting it.
There is no way to reset it, or disable it, or change it, without re-installing the whole ipad. FFS

Chris 10-01-2025 10:08

Re: Moans and Pet Hates - Part 8

They assume it isn’t a problem to do a full reset because they give you enough free iCloud storage for the iPad’s top-level settings, downloaded apps and the way you group them, etc, to be backed up and recoverable when you finish the reset and log it back in. If you’re using any iOS device it’s advisable to create an Apple ID to take advantage of the free iCloud allowance. You don’t need to set up an iCloud email address to do this, you can create an Apple ID with an email address you already own and use that.

A bit of background - I’ve had knee problems for the last year (basically because from March 2023 to January 2024 I had carry my 30Kg Dalmatian out for his constitutionals three times a day), and when I got it MRI’ed last month, it showed the medial meniscus on my left knee was squashed and has complex tears, and basically it’s now bone on bone there (had a steroid injection a couple of weeks ago, now undergoing physiotherapy).

I read up on it, and it said whilst it can’t be repaired, the pain can be alleviated by using physio to strengthen the muscles around it (fortunately, the ligaments are are in reasonably good condition), and the less weight on it, the better.

So, since we came back from holiday, we’ve been avoiding eating stuff like biscuits, cakes, chocolate, etc., no booze in October, and smaller portions in meals.

Unfortunately, since just after Christmas (kept the weight off, somehow), my left knee has deteriorated (even though I have, and am, religiously undertaking physio exercises at home three times a day) - I'm in constant discomfort, frequent severe pain (not just in the medial meniscus, but now behind the knee and in the right meniscus, with discomfort above and below the knee as well. Even if I take anti-inflammatories, and rub some Diclofenic gel on both sides of the knee before bed, I still wake up frequently with the pain.

Managed to get an appointment with the Consultant for next Thursday evening (had to be evening, as I will be driving back from Glasgow after attending a funeral) - hopefully I can get an operation booked, rather than more steroid injections.

I hate the fact that I have proof that I have the right to work in the UK, the fact I was born here isn't good enough, I have to show a passport or birth certificate, then I have to prove I live at my address.

Seeing as all you have to show is a birth certificate, the fact that you were born here is obviously good enough

I went to see the Consultant on the 16th, and she believed further steroid injections/physio would add no value, so referred me to a Knee Surgeon - saw him this morning, he agreed that I need a knee replacement, but I can't have it until early/mid May because they have to wait six months after a steroid injection before operating (lower risk of infection).

So, good news, I'm getting my left knee replaced, bad news, it's not until May, so I will have to endure the ongoing pain for a while longer.

Re: Moans and Pet Hates - Part 8

I brought a Google Pixel 9 Pro XL 1tb off eBay for half the price listed on Currys, John Lewis etc. the red flags were out but I thought I could get away with it.

Some weeks into owning the device my network connection goes down. I contact Google they say the device has warranty so pack it up and send it for inspection. I felt something was wrong here so I gathered as much information as I could including the devices network lock. I managed to get a result on EE via IMEI number as the device has been blocklisted. I called EE and they say yes the device was reported lost or stolen on a certain date in January and it took sometime to filter, knock the network offline.

I contact the seller who denies any involvement but accepts a return for refund. I cancelled Googles return. I pack the device up how it came to me and placed it in a jiffy bag. Now at the post office the clerk did not weigh the item, he said it didn't need weighing so I proceeded. I took photo evidence at checkout of the parcel and receipt/proof of postage.

The parcel arrives at the sellers door in a royal mail bag sorry your parcel has reached you in this state. The seller claims its an empty bag. What I do understand is Royal Mail would not accept an open parcel so there's no way I could have sent it in an open state.

eBay were really nice. I spoke to a really nice lady located in Romania after the seller sent me what he had received. The nice lady issued me a full refund and said the seller and eBay can work out a resolution.

Since this I have been getting random messages from the seller and also calls from him. Some wording that sounds threatening are "you made a big mistake", "you should be ashamed being of a religious belief" "I leave my right in God's hands you wait and see"

I've reported it to eBay. I told EE the original owner is a fraud the device was sold to me not lost or stolen. I can just imagine had this block come into effect at a later date out of eBay's return policy I would have been screwed. These IMEI numbers aren't to be messed with.

Don't. I ended up biting the bullet buying one from Currys. Pricing of these devices is odd. All over a £1000 with a couple hundred pounds difference between storage capacities. I would have thought 512gb would be half the price of a terabyte.

I tried buying one direct from Google but they wanted an active photo id which I don't have. I only have an expired passport which was rejected.

Got my Pixel Pro XL 256 from Currys for £42 a month with free Pixel Watch 2 on ID , great phone and the camera tricks are fun, turned my sister's dog into an elephant with just a few clicks.

I never understood why consumers go for the lower storage amounts given the price difference isn't exactly astronomical. There shouldn't be a market there to be honest it's robbery.

I have two cases that have defects, ones Google logo on the rear doesn't align with the device logo and another hasn't got mmwave module cut out. If you want it let me know just cover postage please :)

It would have cost me alot more money to go for 512GB and frankly with cloud storage for photos which takes up most of the space on the phone it probably isn't needed in my case.

Did you manage to get any cashback from Topcashback ordering from carphonewarehouse(Currys)? I got £65 back but that maybe because it was a contract.

Already got a case which suits my needs thanks.

I ve just ordered the Samsung S25 Ultra. They were offering the 512gb for the price of the 256gb and the 1tb for the price of the 512gb. Dunno why they even offered the 256gb as a pre-order option.

Oh you're on a contact. I was referring to buying the device outright. £1,549 1TB device + £17 per month for unlimited everything SIM only deal.

EE for similar does it for near £120 per month on a 24 month contract.
I save near £1000 buying the device and using a SIM only deal.

No cashback here, nothing worthwhile showing on Quidco or topcashback. I went to Currys myself in hope that they may have the device in stock which they didn't. I then got a tech to order it for me next day delivery.

Yeah it's odd. They put it as the base cost is £1000 then whatever storage amount you go for which for me doesn't add up. I'm sure the device is cheaper than the round figure.

How much storage did you go for?, I want to get my dad a Samsung. He's happy with my OnePlus 9 Pro + his SIM only deal.

It is staggering how pricing for Samsung Vs Google differ. Google seem to hold value.

Probably because Google guarantee software updates for seven years (for the Pixel 8 onwards), and five years for the Pixel 6, 7, and Fold.

My previous phone (OnePlus 7 Pro) stopped rx'ing OS updates after 4 years.

Device updates for 7 years/versions is all well and good if the hardware can handle it after all that time. 7 years sees tech move a long way

I went for the 512gb as I'm only paying the price of the 256gb handset. 256gb is plenty but when there is no extra cost involved I thought it would be silly not too.

It is on a contract with 02 but still works out better off than what the 512gb would cost once the offer is finished. Also getting Buds Pro3 for £20 which is £200 off. Having a bit on the line rental as I'm ordering it before release. So only £45.39 a month over 48 months. £25.40 of that is the device. But on switchup so can swap devices every 90 days.

As for value my Z Fold 4 which cost a lot on release(around £1600)is only worth about £300-350 now and it's not even three years old.

Yes going on contract with a free Pixel watch was far better financially than buying the phone SIM free and when my contract finishes I'll go back onto a £10 a month sim, it was a no brainer as I was treating myself to a day one release of a top phone for the first time ever.

Paying £1549 for any phone + £17 a month on top is kinda mind bogglingly crazy in my honest opinion and I'm sure most people wouldn't even need unlimited everything and could probably save by not doing so.

Half a terabyte is plenty. I was looking at that storage amount after being stung buying the 1 terabyte but the pricing was still silly on eBay and I don't know how safe it would be. You're basically putting your fate in somebody else's hands which is mind-blowing.

Around £1200 for your device. I'd hope the cost would be half of its superior model

A nice treat for yourself. Google are upgrading their chips next model, ours may be the last of a kind

https://www.androidauthority.com/tsm...el-10-3445056/

I've not brought myself a brand new phone for many years. I too wanted to treat myself. I still save though as oppose to those on a total packaged contract.

I don't have home broadband, I hotspot off my phone where I usually do around 1 terabyte every billing cycle. I'm right next to a mast which is handy. Moving around is a little hit and miss.

Does the country it has been blocked in apply only so you can use it in another country? Was it unlocked to all networks?

Whilst we were away on holiday, the builders came to start work on the kitchen,
1st job was to remove the old tiles and get the floor levelled ready for the new LVT. A simple enough job. Alas , underneath the tiles etc was compressed hardcore but it wasn’t very compressed anymore and was crumbling. So all that had to be dug out and replaced which meant that in effect the entire kitchen has had to be ripped out and the new kitchen won’t be delivered until 20th Feb…..

I’m doing my best but there’s only so much takeaway I can eat….

Last year (Jan-Dec) we were paying £39 per month for a total of £468 for the year, and we got a refund of £58.15 in December, and this year’s monthly payments are £34 per month (£408 for the year) - we are with Yorkshire Water.

£800!!! Mines £343 a year currently and £81 in credit.

Compared to other regions water seems incredibly cheap is my area.

I find the way they do it in Scotland very strange.

How much is your monthly water bill including sewage if it's listed separately on your council tax bill?
