Sky reports rise in revenue and profits amid £26bn bidding war

The owner of Sky News says profits are up 7% in what are likely to be its final annual results as an independent business.

Quote:

Sky has reported a rise in annual revenues, profits and customer numbers, and sought to underline its growth prospects as a £26bn bidding war between two American suitors approaches its conclusion.

The home and mobile entertainment and communications company, which owns Sky News, said that statutory operating profit in the year to June rose by 7% to £1.034bn.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation were up 9% to more than £2.3bn.

Sky plc said that revenue had risen for the 29th consecutive year, with like-for-like revenue up 5% to £13.6bn.

I can't read the article but I'm guessing Eleven Sports are all over it. Expecting them to grab some NFL and WWE rights in the next 6 months too.

Wouldn't the current rights come to an end after the Super Bowl in February? If so I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the next rights are currently being negotiated. Looking back at when SKY and BBC have signed deals with the NFL it's always been at the end of August / start of September. I'm sure we'll hear something soon.

I'd imagine Sky would want to keep hold of it's current NFL Sunday night 6pm and 9pm games.

Apart from the last 5 year deal which was concluded in September 2014, starting in September 2015, they have all gone to the wire. Maybe we could hear something this year, but it could run into August 2019.
Before that deal we never knew if NFL would be on TV until two or three weeks before the start of the season.
I would imagine Sky will want to keep the rights that they have held for over twenty years.

Why should Virgin's Sky Sports customers pay extra when sky's own sports customers will not?

ELEVEN is also in discussions with other major platforms in the UK and Ireland to offer the widest possible access to the world-class action available on the service. This is in line with the ‘platform agnostic’ approach ELEVEN SPORTS employs in all its international markets, making it as easy as possible for fans to stay close to the sport they love.

Good question

Hopefully there will be some firm news either way before the early bird offer goes at the end of the month

Also possible of course that the app may have more to offer than linear channels

All to be revealed

Sounds awful. Online only. Nah i don't fancy watching Genoa vs Parma sat on my computer or lying on my stomach watching it on my ipad. Nah not overly into paying for that "pleasure".

Put it on BT sport or Sky sports and i'll have it on the background as filler on my TV. Why would i even want the hassle of turning my ps4 on to watch a lousy italian or spanish game? I dont have a smart tv.

Daft this whole enterprise and i really hope they get overly arrogant and do a Setanta sport on us all.

Surely Eleven Sports must realise that most sports fans sub to Sky and BT Sports so will be unwilling to pay out yet more money. My thoughts are that they will do their best to do a deal with sky and virgin to bundle their channel in with their sports pack. Then the on line sub will satisfy those that don't have sky or virgin.

I agree whilst lots of people watch Football the majority in the UK only have a passing interest in the league's Eleven Sports have acquired , if they don't manage to negotiate carriage on Sky , Virgin and BT I think they'll struggle. I just can't see many paying £5.99 a month for the rights they currently have especially those who already pay to Sky Sports or BT Sports or both.

Well, having read all the replies, unless I have missed one - no one is prepared to pay extra so Eleven Sports is doomed to fail as another Irish sports offering did.

It is a conundrum,

stick to streaming and not many will subscribe (maybe OB will put his money where his mouth is). Or

Get it carried on Sky/virgin and nobody will subscribe because they can get it free - of course they may do as Premier Sports, but how many subscribe to PS?

True but the overwhelming response to their announcement on Twitter today was essentially if they don't launch a proper TV channel on SKY or Virgin people won't be buying. Others are interested in the service if the launch a smart TV app. Not many shouting from the rooftop about the prospect of streaming the action on their tablet or phone.

The next few weeks will be interesting. How long would it take them to create a compatible app for V6 and TiVo?

I thought there were 3 BT sport channels and BT ESPN? I now find there is a BTsport 4k channel which has something completely different than what is on the normal BT sport channels? Am i missing something here....

BT sport on 527 has rogers cup tennis. Bt sport 2 has BT sport reload. Bt sport 3 has FIA formula E and BT sport ESPN has the X games.

I never knew there was another BT sport channel hiding on 555

It’s recently launched, basically when BT has the capability to broadcast sport in 4k that’s where you’ll find it

It will be a simulcast of the SD and HD channels in the usual places

When there is no live sport I assume they just show some sort of “this is 4k” promotion but I haven’t looked

Great news. Amazon arrived on my Youview retail box today and works even without a BT subscription

The app may have appeared but you will need to log in (having paid your subscription) or sign on for your free trial to view it.

Unless of course, Amazon is giving you the fee trial through YouView, in which case expect to be offered a subscription within 30 days of accessing Prime.

Yeah of course the standard Prime subscription applies.

The Express are reporting UFC may go PPV in the UK on SKY Box Office. The article suggests SKY could land the marquee events, roughly 12 per year, with Eleven Sports picking up the rest of the content.

I'm sure the fee will be similar to the big boxing Ppv fights - although I suspect with far less viewers.

I've been offered Premier sports at 89.99 for the season instead of the usual price as I am a season ticket holder at a pro14 rugby club. So I have a code I can get the discount under.

But guess what....this offer is only available on "the sky platform"

Look for this it's how I 'found' it. My virgin media, offers and upgrades, scroll down to sports packages. Box nation etc. There was premier sports price was £0 so ordered it :D

I have a 4K UHD TV, and to be honest I've been going from watching in HD to watching in UHD, and there's not really a huge difference imo, don't get me wrong the PQ is really good, but not what I expected.

The system works on algryms I think. So the more times you search of a deal/upgrade the more likely it is to bring something up. I try to log in on a daily basis .Using a tablet means I can't always get on I am not a robot being the problem +having to use hula to say I am in the UK.. Having done this for a number of years offers come and go all the time. This was the first one that caught my eye.Pro 14 rugby being the thing I wanted.Better that a mix of freesports, Irish tv channel & S4C.You should know how to work that :D:rolleyes:
