The red parts are when the SH was offline and then rebooting during the change from 4 downstream channels to 5.

I started doing this again yesterday (I couldn't when port forwarding as that seems to break the ping response)

It's pretty good though VM could quite clearly do much better when looking at monitors from other ISP's I count my blessings I don't have to put up with what many customers have to on VM.

Damn. If Sky run compulsory interleaving on all lines I'd be disappointed too. If it's 8ms interleaving then I guess that's in both directions = 16ms in total. Even so, your green is almost exactly the same as mine, and I'm in Scotland (high green minimum because of distance) and I've got 15ms of interleaving too.

Yeah they do unfortunately force interleaving on the line. Apparently its set at 32ms by default :dozey:. I emailed Sky last night to check the interleaving issue and got a reply from an advisor who never answered the question and sent me a bog standard slow speed checklist. Probably didnt know what interleaving is.

So am i correct in thinking then qas that the higher green on mine might be because of the distance from the exchange and therefore i cannot get it lowered? Im in Scotland too and Samknows says im 1.58km from the exchange although that is straight line distance. Im a total noob with ADSL having been with Virgin for my broadband since the Cabletel days.

I've worked there too (Winnersh Triangle). Nice to work 2 minutes from home. I'll check to see if VM are still there. The site is due to be pulled down in 2013. The backbone runs through that building. They've also moved the Reading hub from Boulton Road. Where to? I'd like to know. Big works in the Reading area.

what the heck is my connection doing today? Those spikes are so regular, and at a time of day nobody was using the net within the house. I've never seen anything quite like it before on TBB monitors.

upstream congestion so the extra DS wont have helped.

No, distance from exchange doesn't really have much effect. Speed of electricity in copper is almost the speed of light, so 1.58km would still be covered in way less than 1 millisecond.

Given you're in Glasgow and have 16ms interleaving, your minimum latency looks about right. Your minimum latency is comprised of:

Inherent latency of ADSL itself - approx 8-10ms
Additional latency of interleaving - 16ms
Distance to London - usually around 9-12ms depending on ISP.

The first and third cannot really be changed - without switching ISP - but on the other hand interleaving makes up almost half your total latency and that can be changed, if you complain enough to Sky, apparently.

Do you happen to know if FTTC is coming to your area? If so, that reduces line latency to about 4ms, and usually comes with no interleaving, leaving you with a total latency of around 16-20ms.

Many thanks for the info qas. No mention of FTTC coming anytime soon but you never know.

As I understood, FTTC has interleaving which cannot be disabled

Negative. Interleaving on FTTC is automatically controlled, but by default it is off.
