Exactly, my thoughts entirely - think you need deep pockets to be able to run at a loss (presumably 1st year payments of rights are expected up front?) while you attempt to build up a customer base.

This applies to all streaming providers imo

Agreed.

I have just read an online article stating eleven sports are negotiating a deal to have a channel on sky at no extra cost to the consumer.

If this is correct, I presume they will become a bit like Eurosport, but I do not understand the logic - how are ES going to recover any money that they have paid out for the rights? Who will subscribe to their streaming service when they can watch for free on sky?

Also, will this channel be available via VM?

Wonder if Sky would do this as an exclusive deal?

I would rather have BT Sports included in the Full House package than ES!

just took a call from an outbound vm sales team offering me sky sports for £15.87 a month or sports and movies for £19.63 a month

this price would be for 6 months and then revert to full price which is apparently almost 40 quid a month!

am tempted to be honest, told them I'd think about it

Does not include HD which is an extra £8 a month. Still not a bad deal though.

Due to BT Sports doing it when they was starting up when they took over ESPN (ESPN UK and Ireland network).

Until mid August the TV rights are up to the home team.

I mean Celtic are only broadcasting their game on Wednesday on their web Site CelticTV.

Premier Sports have just signed a huge flagship deal with the Pro14 rugby though. They're Irish owned and are marketing Premier Sports very heavily in advance of the new rugby season to us rugby fans. Why would they be taken over by Eleven sports? You obviously know way more about this kind of thing than me but I'd be surprised if they'd do all this then change the name / merge etc?

Eleven Sports seems to be operating well elsewhere, so not sure what you are basing your view on, unless you have simply selected a stock answer from your card system. ;)

I thought it would be, but it looks as though it's SD only at the moment.

The picture wasn't good when I looked at it on Freeview, so I hope VM's V6 box can upscale it nicely if HD isn't coming. We'll soon know the answer to that one!

Untrue. A few years ago, I did say that Sky Atlantic was coming, based on a Broadcast report, other reports I had received, and basically, the way things were going at the time. I was proved wrong and I have often admitted that, but in my defence, I would also point out that sometimes, channels are about to launch, and then something happens at the last minute, and the contract does not pan out. This happened in the earlier incarnation of Paramount, and the listings were actually carried in the TV magazines, but it was pulled at the last minute.

So I may have read this incorrectly, or perhaps there were last minute contractual issues. We may never know, but yes, on that occasion, I was wrong, and I have admitted that more than once. What do you want, blood?

There is renewed speculation now for a variety of reasons, but mostly on the basis of what Sky themselves have said, including the fact that SA will be available on all major TV platforms (which clearly includes BT) and their stated desire to monetise their assets, coupled with the fact that the 10 year contract between Sky and VM comes to an end next year.

So if you disagree with my view that we will get SA next year, that's fine, but you won't be taken seriously unless you, too, are clear about your reasons for being so sure. I'm sorry, but the usual refrain along the lines that 'Sky ain't never going to give up SA' won't wash, given that they have already agreed to let BT have it.

As for your remark about back tracking and changing with the wind (sigh) I expect that is reference to my view that our conventional channels will disappear in time. I know that Denphone confuses the present with the future, but this is the first time I've realised that you seem to do this as well! Nothing I predicted there was due to happen yet!

Just for the record, those predictions relate to 2030 or thereabouts. Are you clear about that now?

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

With the loss of UKTV channels on VM from this weekend VM have tried to sweeten the pot with some replacement channels.

Comparing the channels lost and gained I am not sure most customers will think they have got a good deal. But as always VM were never to consider a price reduction.

The addition of Freesports (which i sometimes watch on freeview/freesat) is welcome addition for me as a sports fan. VM are also giving Premier Sport HD for free for 2 months which i will take advantage of. If this was going to be a permanent arrangement with the channel bundled in a package that would have been great . sadly not.

But as I am already shelling out well over £100pm (and regular price increases to boot) I simply refuse to pay any more. I cant afford ay more tbh.

The problem these days with sports rights is that there are becoming too many players in the market. With Sky Sports. BT Sport, Premier Sport, Boxnation and now another provider in Eleven Sports coming onto the scene it is getting too expensive to watch everything via standalone packages for I would say 99% of punters.

I recall a few years ago Premier Sport was a available without subscription for a
temporary period. I dont think they were overwhelmed with new subscribers once the free trial ended.

And they wonder why people still go down the route of illegal streams.

Free for 7 days and thereafter its probably a tenner a month which is why they are extremely reticent about revealing how much it is now.

We don't yet know whether VM will agree a wholesale deal the same as with BT. So let's not get ahead of ourselves, eh?

Considering ELEVEN is primarily focused on European Football launching with a promotion focusing on a golf event is laughable.

Have they yet to recruit a marketing manager?

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Sky was the least complained-about pay TV provider in the UK in the first quarter of this year, and BT was the most complained-about, according to the latest figures released by media and telecoms watchdog Ofcom.

According to Ofcom’s statistics, Sky generated two complaints per 100,000 customers in the three months to March, compared with 16 per 100,000 for BT. Virgin Media and TalkTalk generated nine and eight complaints per 100,000 respectively, fewer than BT but above the industry average.

BRING BACK UKTV VM DIRECTORS - YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED. PULL YOUR FINGER OUT VM

Don't bother, nothing on I either haven't watched before or would want to watch.

Really pleased with 2 months Premiers Sports free instead.

I would happily play a tenner a month for eleven sports in hd.i like my serie a on a sunday and with ronaldo now with juventus the price of a couple of beers a month seems a fair price.Or vm could put it in the full house pack to make up for b.t. showing less premier league games for the coming season.

BT have the same amount of PL games this coming season they don't lose games until 2019/2020

Freesports is really welcome as they have been showing the NASCAR races NBC have the rights to in the States. The other broadcasting rights held by Fox are being shown on Premier Sports which, oddly enough appears to be free at the moment on Full House. I am not sure if this is just a trial or VM have added it as one of the sweeteners.

This is a pretty good result for Scottish Football and having the majority of Rangers matches must be a plus point for ESPN in what will be a very competitive Sports Channel market once BT Sport arrives.

This is good news for us, ;)

Far more economical to have a weeks pass if there is plenty on that week rather then have a days pass.

Better hope Sky don't loose any more rights as every time they do they seem to increase their prices

Rights lost for this up and coming season,

Football, La Liga, Eredivisie, Chinese and rumoured MLS from next season
Tennis, ATP Tour and finals
Rugby, European Champions Cup, Challenge cup and Pro 14

Purely personal but I can honestly say I rarely watch any of that so no great miss for me.
