Re: What are you eating now?

Yesterday I roasted a nice rib of beef in the braai, smoking with a mixture of cherry and hickory. Beef coated in a coffee rub and served with potatoes, par boiled then crisped up over the braai with a mix of oil and mild curry powder (want the curry flavour not heat).
With the warm evening we sat outside to eat until it really was a bit too dark but still mild.

So do you do it properly the Goan way where the name translates as wine (vinegar) and garlic and you get a really hot but quite light curry (often pork) or the less good Indian restaurant one with potatoes?

I make it the Goan way as I find restaurant curry tend to be to rich and heavy.

I marinate the meat, usually chicken, but sometimes lean pork, in a mix of red wine and crushed garlic for a couple of days. Just as the Portuguese transported pork to Goa in barrels.

Then I make the spiced gravy, to which the meat is added unfried. Potatoes? Ugh, that is due to someone not being able to differentiate between Portuguese and Hindi. ;)

I like the way you think. And enough chillies to dissolve untreated metal so your seasoned pans are OK but you need to use a wooden spoon to stir it?

Please forgive me if this is the wrong thread,I searched the bases for "EAT" and I was looking for "What did you last eat?" but couldnt find one so ill just put it here.....

I last ate a can of SLICED CARROTS and I get the one with NO SALT ADDED because the one with salt IS NOT SALT,its Calcium chloride which is a DE-ICER and has caused me problems!!

Why they put this garbage in our food is beyond me....... I get the one w/o added salt and add my own NATURAL SEA SALT....

I swear they do this on purpose to hurt people...... Why else put this crap in food that doesnt belong there??????

Sorry Dude calcium chloride is a salt, an inorganic compound. It can actually be a medication used to build Calcium in the body. Used for building strength in the bones.

It is not harmful.

That is also why it is used in deicer as it is very water soluble and of course salt is very good at melting ice. That is also why it's used in foods as the salt water you find food stored in ie brine.

No weird harmful chemical at all. I was on Calcium tablets for a few years when I had kidney failure and needed supplements.

However why on earth would you eat tinned carrots? Just buy some fresh carrots then peel and slice them yourself. I love eating raw carrots as its so tasty.

What you refer to as 'salt' (Sodium Chloride) is also a De-Icer, a very common one.
Its estimated the average person consumes between 160 & 345 mg of Calcium Chloride a day.

The 2 times I ate sometihng with "Calcium chloride" it made my bones burn/ache for days... The first time it made my teeth feel wierd...... Then a moderator on sitcomsonline told me that stuff is de-icer... So why are they putting this in our food??

Just use reg salt which doesnt do this!!!!!!

As stated its not bad for you. It's NOT de-icer. It's a chemical compound and is just salt. It's easily dissolved in water which is why it can also be used in de-icer. After all you can just drop rock salt on your drive to melt ice as well.

It is NOT dangerous. Calcium chloride is just a salt. It is also used and good in the cheese making process. Also as previously mentioned it is good for increasing calcium levels in your body, which is what's in calcium tablets.

Better yet, est some real carrots and not processed tinned ones. They taste better and have more nutrients

We have some very sweet sherry in our larder so used it last night to cook a pheasant with mash and multicolour carrots. The sauce was still far too sweet so needed a good squeeze of lemon juice to balance it out. Very nice, BTW my wife did the cooking as I am (trying to) revising for an Old Testament exam on Wednesday. Failed this twice before, hoping I have got enough done to pass this time.

Just been to Tharavadu (Keralan restaurant in Leeds) for a late Christmas get together with friends.

I had Njerippan Kozhi for starters, Adu Cheera Mappas for mains, accompanied by a Kerala Paratha, washed down by 3 bottles of low alcohol Indian lager (I volunteered to be the designated driver).

Food was outstanding, and very good service.

NK - pieces of chicken in a gravy made with peppers, onion, & ground Kerala spices
ACM - boneless lamb cubes in a fresh spinach & a Kerala sauce,
KP - made with a dough of plain flour, oil, ghee, and water that is beaten into thin layers and rolled into a round bread; flaky, layered, and crispy on the outside, while soft and fluffy on the inside.

Puttanesca, or 'Prossy Pasta' as we call it.

As it states... "Because puttana means roughly 'whore' or 'prostitute' and puttanesca is an adjective derived from that word, the dish may have been invented in one of many bordellos in the Naples working-class neighbourhood of Quartieri Spagnoli as a quick meal taken between servicing clients."

Whatever it's meaning, it's one of our staples. Cheap as hell too, just like it's namesake, lol.

Strange though, my wife hates anchovies, capers and olives.... Yet she loves this meal. Saying that, it just works all together.
