Why would they need to get rid of them for bandwidth anyway, sky has loads of bandwidth, so does virgin and any new channels on freeview hd would need a new mux unless they are planning to make the video quality even worse for freeview hd and have 5 channels on 1 mux instead of 4.

analog will be switched off in around 12 months anyway, so i don't see why the red button needs to go other than cutting costs.

I'm sure they'll show the Wimbledon matches elsewhere, I can't see them just dropping coverage of however many matches.

The BBC could be looking at more HD output, as it has started to leak out that Ofcom is releasing more spectrum to Freeview over the next 5 years.

C21: BBC may drop Red Button to make room to launch more HD Channels.

The following is from the C21 Media web site:

http://www.c21media.net/

Isn't this just the Freeview service losing the red button? There's no need to affect Sky or VM viewers is there?

They've been in talks with Sky since before Sky Atlantic was launched. Nothing new here, martine93, I'm afraid.

Wish there was though :bigcry:

Would be typical of VM to give us Mickey Mouse HD channels instead of the decent ones!!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcintern...sat_astra.html
In short, the BBC are to reduce the number of red button streams to five due to the closure of one of the satellite transponders the BBC uses and squeezing everything else into the remaining transponders that have a tight footprint on the UK. Virgin need to make some 'technical changes' as they recieve all SD broadcasts from the Astra satellites.
There is meention that one of the 'mosaic' multiscreens is being culled but news multiscreen is safe, so it may be the sport multiscreen is canned or suspended if other events (say multiple coverage of proms in the park) needs it.
