OB doesn't like to accept things but until such a time that the Premier league sees it's UK rights drop significantly his idea of the Premier League having a streaming service in the UK remains a pipe dream.

It seems to me that the ability to stream effectively is dependent on having a good broadband connection as well as the quality of the stream itself. Until the whole of the UK has access to superfast broadband, there will always be a significant level of dissatisfaction at the quality of streaming (or its total non availability).

That doesn't mean that the problems we have today are necessarily the same problems as we will get in a few years' time. If the PL is actively considering this as an option, then perhaps this idea is not as problematical as you think it is. Today's problems are often tomorrow's jokes.

Well, I did say that today's problems are not necessarily tomorrow's problems.

I don't watch sport at all. But I do understand the issues of blocking, stuttering, latency, etc. As I said, it's a problem now, but it's not permanent. You need to look beyond today.

What makes you think they won't? These are relatively new services, and of course the problems are being addressed. In a few years' time, streaming will work as well as broadcast linear TV.

To be fair as a Sky customer I think I'd sooner Disney bought them out , Sky currently averages the fewest complaints to Ofcom and Comcast has a bad reputation with customers in the USA.

How can you have a 'solid consistent source' when the parties to an agreement insist on an embargo, Den? We rely on leaks on this forum - it's the only way we can get any information on what may be coming.

With Sky Sports Racing launching next year there is highly likely to be more significant developments regarding some of the racecourses like Ascot , etc , etc as my hunch is they will sign a deal with Sky Sports Racing thus meaning RUK would lose one of its crown jewels before the launch next year.

Racing UK is owned by 37 racecourses who are its shareholders under the umbrella of the Racecourse Media Group so getting agreement on that would be nigh on impossible although some of the independent racecourses are highly likely to break off and join the new channel IMO.

PRO14 Rugby have signed a landmark partnership with Premier Sports and FreeSports to broadcast every game from the Guinness PRO14 live in High Definition across the UK and Northern Ireland for at least the next three years.

The agreement from the 2018-19 season means supporters in the UK, including Northern Ireland, can experience the Guinness PRO14 like never before with all 152 games broadcast in High Definition on Premier Sports HD, with no less than 21 games (one per round) shown live Free-To-Air on FreeSports.

This is a quantum leap for the Guinness PRO14 and continues the remarkable transformation of the Championship which continues to grow its appeal after the successful expansion into South Africa.

Premier Sports are going to make the Guinness PRO14 its No 1 property and will therefore be launching the Premier Sports 2 channel with innovative High Definition production of games as well as highlights shows to take supporters right into the heart of the Championship.

Premier Sports is available in 16 million UK homes across Sky and Virgin platforms and to everyone via the Premier Player https://www.premierplayer.tv/ while FreeSports will be available to 22 million UK homes from next season across seven different platforms.

In addition, FreeSports will turn High Definition on Sky and Virgin from July.

From the beginning of next season Premier Sports and FreeSports will deliver unpredented coverage of the Guinness PRO14 with extended pre and post-match analysis. Ahead of next season Premier will confirm the recruitment of their on-air talent and commentators – characters who know just what it takes to compete in the Championship.

Martin Anayi, CEO of PRO14 Rugby, said: “The partnership with Premier Sports will be a watershed moment for the Guinness PRO14, our clubs and their supporters. As an innovative global rugby championship full of world-class players we are always looking to raise our game and this relationship is a bold step for us. This will take coverage of the Guinness PRO14 to a new level and unlock the tournament’s vast potential.

“By better resourcing our clubs through increased central revenue, we will ensure sustainability so they can further invest from the ground up to drive success on and off the pitch so they can retain supporters and attract new fans of all ages. Now rugby fans will be able to watch every game in the Guinness PRO14 which offers them more action than ever and that’s a terrific achievement.

“The bidding for broadcast rights showed us just how much interest there is in the Guinness PRO14 since our expansion into South Africa and the significantly increased revenue will allow us to invest back into our clubs, a figure which has doubled over the last three years.”

Richard Webb, Chief Operating Officer at Premier Sports & FreeSports, added: “We are delighted to have concluded a deal to showcase what we consider to be the most exciting club rugby championship in the world. We believe having all 152 games from every round across our two Premier Sports channels for just £9.99 a month with high level, consistent production represents superb value and means that, for the first time, supporters have unprecedented access to every minute of the Guinness PRO14 all under one roof.”

Dermot Rigley, Commercial and Marketing Director of PRO14 Rugby, said: “Most major rugby properties now have a subscription model with broadcasters valuing the Guinness PRO14 as one of the premier club competitions in world rugby. We believe that Premier Sports and the availability of FreeSports will offer us the best of both worlds - incredible quality and value for supporters as well as reach for our Championship.

“The production standards will be like nothing ever seen before in the Guinness PRO14 with each game broadcast in HD and complemented by expert analysis, TMOs at every game and highlights programmes.”

PRO14 Rugby will shortly announce the Republic of Ireland broadcaster while negotiations continue with a local language broadcaster in the UK.

For greater detail about this landmark agreement please see our Question & Answer document on www.pro14rugby.org available at this link: https://www.pro14rugby.org/2018/04/30/broadcastqa/

I think one of those options is a good bet, it certainly won't be around without Warren's fighters.

As I think I've posted previously, the future of the channel has been uncertain after majority funder Bill Ives died last August. His family may not want to continue to subsidise it. Its registered office moved to BT Sport's hub in the Olympic Park last year signifying a very close relationship between the two companies.

Wimbledon's broadcasting infrastructure for 2018 announced. Will be interesting to see if the BBC broadcasts Centre Court in 4K.
Quote:

- The AELTC has taken on responsibility for the host coverage of The Championships 2018 under the umbrella of Wimbledon Broadcast Services (WBS).
WBS will, for the first time, provide multi-camera coverage of all 18 Championships courts, with Centre Court being offered in 4K High Dynamic Range to achieve optimum resolution and picture quality.
- A net-cam will be installed on Centre Court and No.1 Court.
- World-feed commentary will be provided on up to 11 courts at any one time and interviews and colour footage will also be produced.
- A total of 17 robotic cameras will capture the beauty and atmosphere of the Grounds, including three covering the Aorangi practice courts.
- The coverage will be distributed globally to more than 200 countries with over 50 organisations represented on-site.
- The Broadcast Centre has been revamped to accommodate these changes, with a content creation, quality control and distribution hub at the heart of the operation.

We have seen rumours on the web that BT may bid for the full rights to Scottish football when they are up (SPFL are up in 2020).

BT and Sky part own the rights to the SPFL right now.
BBC and Sky part own the right to the Scottish Cup right now (Two games on Sky and One game on BBC up to Semi Final).

Well, that seems to be your mantra, Den old chap, but given the Sky have done it and BT have done it, I don't think that your argument stacks up, because Amazon have pockets that are bigger than both of them combined.

I have already explained how a different marketing strategy could release additional revenue as well.

Its not my mantra as its basic financial reality which you don't seem to have grasped yet when it comes to the Premier League rights.

Just as we can all predict yours. Amazon may want to get involved in streaming sport, but the sheer numbers involved for the Premier League make the streaming model difficult.

Don't forget sky used it as part of a sports package as did BT.

At the moment, streaming alone is not a viable option as the UK’s digital infrastructure is not yet developed throughout the country. So it would have to be a mix in the first instance.

Eleven Sports is expected to bid for the remaining two Premiership packages and will bring us La Liga by streaming and/or a new digital broadcast channel.

The highlights show attracts just 500,000 viewers - much lower than expected

EFL have accepted an offer to broadcast highlights on freeview channel Quest

Well, I certainly wouldn't but then again I'm not a sports fan.

However, the bigger picture is what I'm interested in and where this may lead us to in the future. Eleven Sports is expanding, so this is an interesting development.

re: premier sports getting the pro14 rugby.....

I'm a bit cheesed off with the wording on their Q&A.:

Quote:

Q: How do I access Premier Sports & FreeSports?
A: Premier Sports is a High Definition subscription service available to 16 million UK homes and on the Sky and Virgin Media platforms and available to everyone on all devices via the Premier Player.
That reads like Virgin customers will be getting all games in HD. And we know that's not the case, despite having to pay the same for premier sports as sky customers :mad:

Premier Sports HD will be with VM in the Summer, I believe, so that wording is ok.

Discovery are preparing to launch a UK version of Quest HD, which will be useful for its sports rights.

I think it likely that this will come to VM seeing as I believe that Liberty Global own some (or all?) of Discovery.

Premier Sports have confirmed that carriage negotiations are taking place and that they are confident that Premier Sports HD, Premier Sports 2, Premier Sports 2 HD, Freesports and Freesports HD will join VM "by the summer".

BBC and Sky part own the right to the Scottish Cup right now (Two games on Sky and One game on BBC up to Semi Final).

There's been a "rumour" about this for years.

Neil Doncaster has been putting this about every chance he gets, whenever some football rights change hands.

Sky only really care about the Celtic vs :erm: Glasgow Rangers 2012 :dunce: matches as they draw a big audience across the UK.

BT to include Amazon Prime in TV offering as it unveils convergence plan

Quote:

BT is to include Amazon Video as part of its TV offering as it pivots its fixed broadband service to become part of a “converged network division” under new consumer business CEO Marc Allera.

In addition to the Amazon Video app BT said it would make Sky’s Now TV available to TV customers from next year.

The addition of Amazon’s offering makes BT the first UK service provider to embrace the e-commerce giant’s Prime Video service, allowing users to access TV series and movies including originals and exclusive series such as The Grand Tour, The Marvellous Mrs Maisel and Vikings.

TalkTalk, the telecoms and broadband group, has struck a £175m deal to offload part of its business-to-business (B2B) customer base to Daisy Group, a privately owned rival.

Sky News has learnt that TalkTalk will unveil the transaction on Thursday, alongside annual results that are expected to show a sharp fall in profits after a difficult year for the company.

Sources said the deal with Daisy consisted of TalkTalk's roughly 80,000 business customers with which it has a direct billing relationship.

The vast majority of TalkTalk's B2B arm by revenues and number of customers will be unaffected by the move, which is said to be aimed at continuing the company's efforts to simplify itself.

Led by founder Charles Dunstone, who returned to an executive role last year, TalkTalk has been drawn into a price war with broadband and telecoms rivals such as BT Group and Sky, the owner of Sky News.

Investors - the largest of whom is Sir Charles - have‎ had to swallow cuts to the dividend and a £200m share sale announced earlier this year.

TalkTalk is forecast by analysts to have made just £50m in pre-tax profit in the year to March, down from £161m the previous year.
