Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Do we know when this "Suprise" might happen today???

---------- Post added at 09:49 ---------- Previous post was at 09:46 ----------

BTW, iu've just read this advert only says something special is happening to Virgin 1, so it's doubtful that it might be the long awaited HD linear channels then...

Who the flip wants Virgin 1 HD????

There's bugger all on it...

I would not say i watch much tv but i certainly do have clashes a lot usual because the stuf fi want is on primetime ie about 4-6pm and +1 helps me a lot to watch the shows i want withpout clashes or missing any

Believe it or not, to a great extent I agree with you. I don't watch a vast amount of TV by any means. But, as I don't own a PVR, I do find +1 channels useful for the odd occasion when I find something I do want to watch, when it's already about halfway through. It's good to be able to go away and do something else for half an hour and then come back and see the thing from the beginning.

That argument doesn't work in the context of HD on Virgin of course, because you can't receive HD without a V+ which is also a PVR, so the need for HD+1 channels is reduced, unless, as I said earlier, you're a real telly addict and doing a lot of watching/recording. However it is possible to buy a non-PVR HD receiver for Freesat, so a few HD+1 channels on that platform would be useful.

It could well be - aren't they testing 7 or 8 channels using sky Sports as the feed at the moment.

It would make sense as it would be there in time for the Champions League in September.

Surely the Red Button services were discussed during the Sky Basics shenanigans ?

Virgin Media was testing some Sky Movies Channels but they stop testing them months ago.

As far as I know Virgin are not testing any channel at the time that I post this.

It's an aspect of the dispute I've always found difficult to fathom. I only want Sky Sports to watch the Champions league but the games I want to watch are only available through the red button. Result is - I don't subscribe and haven't done for years. I have paid for the occasional feed over the internet, and watched the odd game in a pub but that revenue is nowhere near what Sky would have collected from me if they made the red button available.

I know i'm not alone, especially in Scotland where the Celtic and/or Rangers games tend to be shunted to the red button when all 4 English teams are still involved.

I think it all goes back to OFCOM and the rate card. OFCOM didn't include the red button content as part of the rate card and so Sky don't have to make it available. I guess Sky's thinking is anything extra they have that VM don't is a good thing.

I think Sky are only making it available now, if the rumours are true, in order to make themselves look better to OFCOM ahead of their review into pay TV

That's the most sensible post I have read in this topic for a long, long time.

I've repped you for that :)

I have, on occasion, missed a programme because I forgot the start date. Then hunted around for a +1 channel.

I would welcome HD +1 channels on Virgin (although let my one year contract run with Sky first :) ) because that would mean that Virgin had more HD channels (otherwise where do the +1 come from). And even Sky don't have them, which can be rather annoying when trying to record two HD programmes and watch TV.

It's a bit late in the day for Sky to play nice guy on this: the OFCOM Pay TV review is due to be published this month and any gestures now are waaaay passed the consideration date.

I agree, it could be they've got wind of what's coming and are making a gesture to save face.

The Virgin Media twitter, when asked when the HD channels would appear, replied with Autumn.
