Re: The 5p bag charges...
I have those small and large reusable bags that Tesco & Sainsburys bags in my boot, they also get used on holiday for bits and bobs as well as the first shop.

Re: The 5p bag charges...
I doubt there is a law saying if they have their name on it they cannot charge.
If you don't want to advertise you can buy canvas bags from charities or whatever but they won't be 10p. |

After seeing the problem of UK landfill sites from the 1950's onwards going into the sea due to coastal erosion and killing sea life I think that it's a good idea. Lots of clothes, plastics etc that we threw away decades ago are now finding their way into the sea, as are poisonous chemicals from batteries etc. As time went on, landfill methods improved, but declined again in the 80's when the Thatcher administration forced councils to use the cheapest option for refuse collection and disposal. It was simply cheaper to bury the waste and not recycle it, so that's what the private companies who bid under Compulsary Competitive Tendering did. Thankfully, the environmental impacts of doing this are now being taken seriously again. Some places are even mining old landfill sites to recycle materials and reclaim precious materials that we are running short of :) https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0bgpc2f |

Re: The 5p bag charges...
I've seen people being charged for bags in almost every shop (and takeaway) I've been in, not just big stores. A nice little earner for the shopkeepers.
Anyway, 5p bags don't exist in most of the big stores anymore. |

Here in Scotland anyway even local small corner shops charge for bags.

Small shops and takeaways pocket the cash. "If you’re a small or medium-sized business, you can charge and follow the scheme voluntarily. You don’t have to report or keep records for carrier bag use". Plus if the shop charges over 5p for a bag, none of it goes to charity. Tada! Big stores now sell them for 10p.... |
