I have those small and large reusable bags that Tesco & Sainsburys bags in my boot, they also get used on holiday for bits and bobs as well as the first shop.

I doubt there is a law saying if they have their name on it they cannot charge.

If you don't want to advertise you can buy canvas bags from charities or whatever but they won't be 10p.

Good idea, i've seen a few people do this.

After seeing the problem of UK landfill sites from the 1950's onwards going into the sea due to coastal erosion and killing sea life I think that it's a good idea.

Lots of clothes, plastics etc that we threw away decades ago are now finding their way into the sea, as are poisonous chemicals from batteries etc.

As time went on, landfill methods improved, but declined again in the 80's when the Thatcher administration forced councils to use the cheapest option for refuse collection and disposal. It was simply cheaper to bury the waste and not recycle it, so that's what the private companies who bid under Compulsary Competitive Tendering did.

Thankfully, the environmental impacts of doing this are now being taken seriously again. Some places are even mining old landfill sites to recycle materials and reclaim precious materials that we are running short of :)

Oh Chloe you are getting a fair bit wrong here as first of all l don't actually eat that much as l just like what l like and that sometimes is exotic.;)

Secondly l have looked in the mirror lately and it does fit the description of a male although sometimes l am accused of acting a bit like a drama queen.;)

And thirdly My Dad is from Yorkshire and l am from deepest Devon.;)

I've seen people being charged for bags in almost every shop (and takeaway) I've been in, not just big stores. A nice little earner for the shopkeepers.

Anyway, 5p bags don't exist in most of the big stores anymore.

It's not a nicer earner for the shops at all. It's a tax that goes to the government.

They have to charge for bags.

It does actually depend on the size of the shop as to whether it's compulsory (big retailers) or voluntary (smaller ones):

Here in Scotland anyway even local small corner shops charge for bags.

Larger shops are supposed to donate it to charity, after certain costs are removed.

Small shops and takeaways pocket the cash.

"If you’re a small or medium-sized business, you can charge and follow the scheme voluntarily. You don’t have to report or keep records for carrier bag use".

Plus if the shop charges over 5p for a bag, none of it goes to charity. Tada! Big stores now sell them for 10p....
