Yes he might have a big gob but it is backed up with far greater prize money being on offer and a much more competive environment to play in as well too.

The chairman of the Professional Darts Corporation, Barry Hearn, has confirmed that Ted Hankey will join the PDC for the 2012 season.

Hankey is a two time winner of the rival BDO World Championship.

The former BDO Championship finalist Bobby George told Radio 5 live Breakfast that he is not surprised Hankey is making the switch and that the BDO will "find another star to replace him".

George also praised BDO title holder Christian Kist.

Two-time PDC world champion Adrian Lewis will play world number one Phil Taylor in the opening week of the 2012 Premier League in Manchester.

The Stoke-on-Trent duo will meet on 9 February in a repeat of the first fixture in the 2011 tournament.

On that occasion, Lewis beat Taylor 8-2 at the O2 Arena in London.

Gary Anderson, who beat Lewis in the final to win the Premier League last year, starts the defence of his title against debutant Kevin Painter.

Elsewhere, James Wade will play Andy Hamilton and Raymond van Barneveld takes on Simon Whitlock.

The eight players meet each other twice in the group stages, with the top four moving on to the play-offs at the O2 Arena on 17 May.

Taylor is a five-time winner of the Premier League, but his challenge in 2011 was ended by Lewis in the semi-finals at Wembley.

However, Lewis could not follow up his 8-3 victory over the 15-time world champion and was beaten 10-4 by Scotland's Anderson in the final later that evening.

Three-time BDO world champion Martin Adams has revealed that a neck injury hindered his 2012 title defence.

The 55-year-old failed in his bid for a third consecutive Lakeside crown after going out in the quarter-finals to eventual runner-up Tony O'Shea.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "It prevented me from putting in the right amount of practice before playing Tony.

"I was in quite a lot of pain when I played Gary Stone [in the previous round] and got away with it."

Two-time world champion Ted Hankey has accepted his offer of a tour card to join the PDC circuit.

The 'Count', along with the other semi-finalists from the recent Lakeside Championship, has been offered a two-year tour card and will move onto the PDC circuit with immediate effect.

The 43-year-old from Shropshire, who won the Lakeside Championship in 2000 and 2009, has played in the Grand Slam of Darts for the past three years but will now compete full-time alongside the likes of Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis, James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld.

Former Lakeside World Championship semi-finalist Dean Winstanley has earned a tour card to play on the Professional Darts Corporation circuit.

Winstanley, who made the last four of the British Darts Organisation's Lakeside event in 2011, was one of four players to win a card at the PDC's qualifying school on Saturday.

The 30-year-old won five matches on day three of the q-school at the Barnsley Metrodome, his final victory - 6-1 over Matt Clark - earned him the tour card.

Winstanley, who had earlier seen off Simon Craven, Mareno Michels, Kevin Dowling and Dave Ladley, said: "I'm over the moon and I feel great.

That's interesting. Didn't he 'collapse' in the BDO? I heard the other day that semi-finalists onwards at the BDO have to hand back their prize money if they defect to the PDC (though Ted has been let off this - I think he threatened to not play his semi-final if he didn't get a waiver)

Just checked - he could have won the match he played and still have kept his money

Jamie Lewis, Bernd Roith, Johnny Haines and Dave Smith were the winners of the last four automatic Tour Cards on day four of the PDC's Qualifying School on Sunday.

Welsh ace Lewis, 20, will become a full-time professional in 2012 after his success at the Barnsley Metrodome - as he defeated former World Championship semi-finalist Andy Jenkins 6-3 to win a Tour Card.

Adrian Lewis has set his sights on being the world number one by the end of the year.

To achieve his goal, the 27-year-old must dethrone fellow Stoke thrower and 15-time world champion Phil Taylor.

But Lewis has made a flying start to 2012, successfully defending his PDC world crown as he beat another rival from the Potteries, Andy Hamilton, 7-3 in the final at London's Alexandra Palace earlier this month.

'Jackpot' still has his critics despite winning the world title twice, but knows that if he can claim the No.1 ranking and oust Taylor then there will be no disputing his status in the game.

Justin Pipe won the opening Players Championship of 2012 with a 6-0 whitewash of Paul Nicholson in Saturday's Spanish Darts Trophy final in Benidorm.

Pipe continued the form which saw him reach six of the last 10 Players Championship finals in 2011 by claiming his fourth ranking title and a £6,000 prize at the Melia Hotel.

The 40-year-old from Taunton showed strong form throughout the event as he picked up seven victories, having begun the day by seeing off Eduardo Sales Lopes, Michael Barnard and Michael Smith.
Quote:

"It's a brilliant way to start the year," said Pipe. "Paul's always a tough opponent so I'm delighted to have won the final, and it wasn't as easy as the scoreline might suggest.

"I couldn't have asked for anything else today and it's fantastic to have carried my form from the latter part of last year into 2012."

MICHAEL SMITH won his second professional title with victory in Sunday's Spanish Darts Classic Players Championship in Benidorm, denying Justin Pipe a weekend double with a 6-3 win in the final.

The 21-year-old from St Helens had won a UK Open Qualifier last February in Barnsley, and picked up the £6,000 first prize from the second PDC ProTour event of 2012.

Having missed double 12 for a nine-dart finish during a defeat to Pipe during Saturday's Players Championship, Smith gained revenge against the Taunton ace with a 6-3 win in Sunday's decider at Benidorm's Melia Hotel

On Friday, we see the return of live darts to our television screens, and the second bi-annual World Cup of Darts will provide us with a very exciting precursor to the start of the Premier League season, which begins in exactly one week’s time.

You will have to cast your mind back to December 2010 to the last World Cup, the inaugural tournament. Heavy snow had gripped the north, but that didnt stop the Dutch pair of Raymond van Barneveld and Co Stompe taking the title, beating the Welsh pair of Barrie Bates and Mark Webster in the final. Top seeds in 2010 England, who had paired Phil Taylor and James Wade together, suffered the biggest upset of the competition, after being knocked out in the second round by the Spanish pair of Antonio Alcinas and Carlos Rodriguez.
