It's not really a direct comparison though is it. If VM gave you the option of a 1TB 3 tuner PVR or a 1TB 3 tuner TiVo, how many would go for the TiVo and pay the £3 extra a month (assuming same upfront hardware costs).

Excellent point that.

But the software for the third tuner was done by Tivo, so your comparison should be a two tuner PVR and a 3 tuner Tivo at 3 pounds extra

Then Richard Branson needs to think more carefully before he makes claims of TiVo being a real weapon against Sky.

I don't see how a premium product will attract that many new customer's to VM to make it a genuine weapon against Sky.

If they want to take on Sky they need forward thinking technological advancements like TiVo but marketable to the widest possible customer base, not a niche market of technophiles. I believe that VM charging £3.00 per month + £239 (inc install) to new customers and insisting they take the top XL package will not significantly increase their customer TV base. Certainly not enough to really worry Sky.

To be honest I had no idea V+ had three tuners before I got it, all I knew was you could watch one show while recording another which I assumed was the same as I could do with BT.

I agree some people would find it handy having three tuners but is it a massive selling point for an average punter?, I honestly doubt it. VM mention it on the V+ sales page but they don't exactly go overboard promoting the feature do they.

But it's a nice feature but I doubt it's a mainstream deal clincher, no one else provides it as far as I know.

I find 2 enough as even when it's taping two were generally watching things we've recorded from previous nights.

I do too but as ever it's down to the individual, the guy earlier said he records three shows at once so it's essential for him. I don't ever recall wanting to record three shows at once but if you do then it's a great feature, i'm not sure it's widely required though as otherwise everyone would offer it.

Agreed personal choice.

Most of the people who would need 3 tuners are people who are really into their telly, and watch loads of programs/series, which will be the people on the top packages anyway.

I can't see anyone on less than XL pack needing it, because I doubt they have that much telly to watch, through either not being that bothered or perhaps not having the time.

I personally don't but there are many who will and being able to record three things is a great feature of TIVO for them who need it.

Re: £3.00 Tivo Charge

The 9pm to 10pm slot can get busy with recordings and even with +1 channels, I've had 4 recordings between 9 and 11pm a good few times and a couple of times have actually wanted an additional programme to be recorded on top. Not every channel has a +1 channel or catch up e.g. the Sky channels right now. So 3 recordable tuners and Tivo auto searching for repeats will basically eliminate any risk of clashes for me in the future as I see it. That will do nicely!

Someone on the VM forums says he was told by CS that a 500GB Tivo is being launched in May for £49 plus install cost. Page 3, post 28.
