Talk about much ado about nothing. As mentioned previously you only have to chenge the file extension. In my workplace all attached executables and *.zip are stripped from emails. Our workround- zip everything then change the extension to "zap" and tell the recipient to change it back. Takes a couple of seconds each end.

I'm in two minds about this. I hear that Google Email has weird copyright law (basically a law unto themselves) which allows them copyright over your emails and their contents. If this is the case, I don't want anything to do with Google.

The point is, I don't want to be forced by VirginMedia to have Google Email. I didn't sign up for that when I joined Virgin.

From the Gmail terms:

Google does not claim any ownership in any of the content, including any text, data, information, images, photographs, music, sound, video, or other material, that you upload, transmit or store in your Gmail account. We will not use any of your content for any purpose except to provide you with the Service.

The same term would apply to any mail hosted on the Virgin Media Mail service

You will get an email to say that your account has been migrated to the new platform.

If virgin media want to protect people then tell them how dont limit there ability to send particular files!

I often create .cmd files to automatically do things on friends pcs so I dont have to explain something technical to someone who doesnt care.. .bas files are useful as this is the standard file format for Visual Basic Files allowing me to create custom functions and pass them on to my friends.

There has go to be a way to stop this?? No??? Why not...

Looks like I am going to have encrypt them and send instructions on how to decrypt my attachments! or password protect the ZIP file!

Pathetic and completely useless VM

If you are doing this type of thing then use a more suitable email provider (plenty to choose from). Most mainstream email providers have similar attachment policies now. Just because your internet connection is with VM you are not forced to use any particular email provider.

I doesn't change the fact that I am the customer and as a customer I am not getting what I pay Virgin Media for, especially since their services are overpriced compared to the competition. So I will take my business to any company that will give me what I require. Since my so called 10meg connection only gives me 3 or 4 meg on a good day with wind in the right direction, I may as well move to adsl. To a company that respects the customer and gives them what they pay for. Goodnight Gents = I'm off before this becomes a flame war ;#}

You pay for an internet connection and email, you get an internet connection and email. SIMPLE

You will not have Google mail. VM are just outsourcing to Google. Its a common practice throughout industry. Your contract, terms and conditions etc will remain with VM. Google will just provide the VM service on VMs behalf. Hopefully it will now be run by a company that actually knows what it is doing :)

How long is it before some idiot gets a message along the lines of:-

Please follow these instructions to view/watch your sexy naked women/men for free.

1. Download the attached file
2. Unzip the file to your desktop
3. Rename imagonnafcukyou.exz to imagonnafcukyou.exe
4. Double click imagonnafcukyou.exe

And he/she follows the instructions?

Sorry, but trying to protect idiots is a losing battle.

You'll always get people stupid enough to do that. There is no helping them. If people are really determined, they'll stuff up any system.

These measure do actually work. They won't stop viruses dead (no one is saying they will), but they do slow the spread of viruses. Simply because they reduce the amount of people who get infected emails apparently from people or companies they know, and, without thinking, click the attachment..

You signed up for an account with email. AFAIK, it does not specify *anywhere* on all the paperwork and pages involved in signing up exactly who will be hosting your emails.

Virgin will still be providing you with email, it's just Google providing the back end.

Google's terms and conditions are irrelevant. Your contract is with Virgin, not Google.

Well this sounds better. I've been generally pleased with the VirginMedia service over the years since I joined, never had any real trouble with their email, but not a fan of Google.
