This is probably the only machine out of all of them that actually worked as it should. The Graphics card was only the built in Intel 945G but 3D is fast and works out of the box. The mouse by luck is your normal 2 Button / scroll wheel wired - so again no problems there.

Sorry I meant the Screen (TFT) Max res was only 1024x768 :)

It runs 100% fine once I have given it the driver etc - ATI are working on the problem and I am sure given time it will 3D'erizse....

Nope - But there is a way to add in some stuff and eventualy get some control but not the fine control that is fully needed - Blame Microsoft shall we :)

We use Debian as a back end @ work instead of Microsoft so using Linux is something I Just have to do anyhow, the main problems for the "home" user would be mainly then the 3D Graphics. The Situation given Linux from what I understand is both ATI who are only now starting to come through with some sort of Decent Drivers and Broadcom - Closed Source in an open source world type thing. As per the Ubuntu Forums though, I had more luck with 7.04 and bolting on the additional then 7.10 on many of the machine above.

Yes it does as the Compaq laptop there had all them choice's from a fresh Install.

I'd guess it depends on your wireless chipset, rt2500 works for me.

Network manager is a bit klunky though, I found this guide to ditching it & replacing it with wpa_supplicant. I'm going to try it this weekend...

I'm loving this, I installed the previous 7.04 on this laptop before which didn't include the restricted drivers bit and I had to hack a driver together for my Broadcom wireless to get it to work. With this latest version, I installed it, installed the retstricted driver, and I got online today without even thinking about it. If the Ubuntu team carry on this way, I might ask for their hand in marriage (yes, all of them!) :p:

Yeah I stuck with the old fashioned display driver, as I wasn't having much luck getting Compiz running with the restricted one (ATI X300 onboard here)

I have to use the default ati drivers for an old ati(agp) card we have in a pc the girls use.It`s only some 64Mb thing and dosent require any restricted drivers although it does run compiz fine, out the box as it were.
It wont do TVout with those default ati drivers but it will using the vesa driver.

Which is still more than my own fx5500 will do, with it`s shiney restricted drivers.:)
It does do it`s dual monitors just fine though.

AFAIK, the built-in Compiz Fusion won't work with the fglrx ATI driver, as fglrx doesn't (yet) support AIGLX.

To use Compiz Fusion with fglrx, you need to install XGL.

I didn't even get as far as fiddling with Compiz, I was just trying to set my monitors both to 1024x768 in dual screen [instead of mirrored with both showing the same thing] mode when things went pear-shaped.

Being using this for about a week now, and i must admit i rather like it... Smaba seems like it's taking the mess though, took me ages to add an account so i could share one folder with it... Yikes.

Compiz or whatever it's called feels clunky, and the desktop cube simply refuses to work correctly, displaying one desktop over and over, except with all apps minimised if it swaps to what you would think was another desktop, any tips?

Install the compiz-config-settings-manager in synaptic for a start...if you dont already have it.
Your "cube" is possibly only set to two horizontal desktops so you wont see any cube.

Go into the "General section" of ccsm once installed and find the "desktop size" tab and set it to 4.

EDIT:Once installed,CCSM is in your preferences menu but is called Advanced Desktop Effects.

Set horizontal to 4(for cube) and the other 2 to just one.
