Yeah, I heard of a certain site getting all that treatment. I've not even had a whisper, so I can only assume there was some sort of trouble there.

I like the Google style, simple design. Works well considering what the site is aimed at and also that other sites offering such services are messy, confusing and over-designed (rapidshare for example).

How often is it used? Bandwidth and file space are two big concerns in maintaining websites and your going to need bucketloads of stuff. Would you be ready to pay for all that and would the google ads pay for it? How long do you keep the files for? Do you have the ability to support the site if it became popular all of a sudden?

Its not too bad, I dont think you need two pages though. You have your links to the left, and then a photo to the right but not much content under it. On page 2 you have the reverse, nothing on left and content on right. Why not move the content on page 2 and put it to the right of the links on page 1?

Good first effort though, The Important thing is learning HTML and you seem to have done that :tu: Looking at it, you could move onto learning HTML + CSS. You have enough of the HTML needed so all you would need to learn is how to style it with CSS. Also means you dont have to bother with tables and other such formatting HTML code which isnt used much anymore.

Looms good but when the window is smaller the 'now 50mb' star covers the upload area. Can you not float the input box's to the right using css?

Re: [Merged] Promote your own website

Just completed this site: www.branthowe.co.uk

Nothing too fancy, still table based but some of the elements are positioned with css (gallery images). Fonts and size were requested by business owner.

Overall quite pleased with it since I'm now writing all sites in notepad from scratch. Its html transitional and css compliant and is accessible level A..
Next site in development will be entirely positioned with advanced css.

Dilli, email me : mark @ mlweb dot co dot uk and I'll hook you u with some space. Dunno about forwarding your name across but it should be just a case of changing the name servers.

You will have full ftp acccess etc which since you run your own ftp server should be a breeze.

Nothing wrong with a table layout mate, I always say, if it can be done with tables, do it with tables! Not all browsers fully support CSS yet so if you want it to look the same for everyone tables is the way to go imo.

All modern browsers support CSS, Its best to use it when you can. Cleaner, easier to maintain, reduces loading times (albeit not much of a problem anymore).

The problem with using tables is that you have to include the presentation data with every page so in the future if you want to move bits about you need to alter each page. With css you only need to edit the one file to totally change the look of the site. I sure you've probably seen it but take a look at css zen garden (google it)

Hi

the server address is correct

your user name should be your main email address you set up when registering your account, but without the '@ntlworld' suffix

The password should be the original one you set up when registering, i.e. letter & 9 numbers - this is the usual cause of problems, as people change their e-mail password, but the webspace still expects the old one.

If that is the case & you can't remember the original, you will have to contact Technical Support & they will reset it for you.

Statcounter
http:/www.statcounter.com/

This is pretty much the industry standard for tracking visitors to your site. You won't need the paid for package as the free one gives you a history of the last 500 page views. We subscribe to it and get a 1000 page view history but at the time the were only giving out 100 as the freebie.

Try's to auto complete keyword search's as you type. Useful because it shows you in popularity order the other keywords and key phrases.

https://adwords.google.com/

The defacto internet advertising medium. Allows you to place your adverts to the top and right of the keyword searchs. You only pay when someone clicks on your ad and visits your site. If you do this spend time to make sure that the text in the ad give's a call to action 'buy it now' and that the text in the ad matches the targeted keyword and also that the keyword & text in the ad are somewhere on the page you send the link to.

Page rank is the multiplier that is the final part in how far up the normal (organic) Google search listings you can reach. Google rates sites by content and relevance then multiplies this by the page rank figure so moving from PR1 to 2 can catapult you up the listings. Our work site is sat at PR4 which I'm very proud of. If I had to critises it would be your html coding. It is a mixture of upper and lower case. If you dropped it into lower case and used css instead of tables it would be very simple to redesign.

hehe, I know what you mean, but I use editplus2 and that highlights all the code, so it does not bother me that much, as editplus2 does not bother whether it is all upper or lowercase, in fact it could be a mixture of both, it still does not care.

but I do know what you mean

I fancy myself as somewhat of a decent web designer and I always use tables where tables work, CSS positional stuff can be nasty with cross browser compatibility being a big issue!

Perhaps he doesn't want his website to be XHTML (which should be in upper case) compliant :p:

Positioning can be tricky with css but it is possible to pull off and it is good it have css only sites. The only problem I have had with different browsers is that IE 6 has crap support for alpha layers in png files. But with MS forcing IE 7 onto so many computers it should be fine.

It is easy enough to get stuff to position correctly although I always seem to have a few issues with Safari which is supposed to be 100% standards compliant.

Well done on changing the code IK whilst is is a way to xhtml it's more for neatness. If I was being completly anal I would have suggested code indentation :S lol

I mostly do code indentation, its easier to read, but at lease I know my code.

one other thing about the case of code.....

the doctype had to be in uppercase to be valid HTML!!! using the http://validator.w3.org

but keeping this line as it is, the rest of my code is valid HTML 4.0, with the exception of 2 links that are for multimaps, and the embeded videos, other than the links they give out, its all valid.

oh and my CSS passes with the exception of the body, as I have changed the scrollbar, and I knew that would not pass. pity all browsers not support this feature, hehe

I was going to use the wee image on my site, but not sure who actually really likes seeing them ;)

ok, I think I might list my ones :)

This is my interaction design site:

Interaction Design

Just a Uni Project, had to research technology and such.

Visual Communication

Again, A Uni Project about art and such. I prefer making the sites than the writing.

and a flash portfolio which I have linked to before:

Christine Almond Portfolio

I have pages taking, briefly, about each of these here:

Should be adding a PHP/MySQL site soon and a ASP site. So any recommendations on those before I start would be cool, including what kind of site would be good to make using these (doing it to learn)

I'm doing an online christmas list for my php/mysql learning.

PHP & MySQL is a great combination, I'm starting to dabble in Ajax at the moment which is also a brilliant technology!

Ajax is the above + Javascript isnt it? Does it have its own frameworks/librarys?

AJAX is Asynchronous Javascript and XML and is used to create nice interactive web applications. A simple implementation could be to update certain areas of a page without doing a page refresh/postback etc.

Re: [Merged] Promote your own website

Well, Thats what I mean. Does AJAX actually contain anything new or is it simply a new name for a certain combination of existing tech?

I've not used PHP before and I'm just looking into Ajax so I'm not fully sure if it contains anything that you may not have seen.

Have a look here and see if there is.

Re: [Merged] Promote your own website

Ajax is a new name for something that has existed in Javascript for quite a while, the meaning is that it can get data from the server/call scripts/etc separately from a page refresh

Just done a mock-up of my works new website that I have spent this afternoon on.

http://www.trial.mlweb.co.uk/purple/image2.html

Any comments welcome, this is the 1st mock-up so I'm still not happy with several areas, the image to the right of the news for 1.

Quite pleased with it, wanted to do a nice bright web 2.0 style.

Had a re-jig of my site.

I've got rid of the crappy old index pages, made the blog the root, & replaced the rather poorly made photo gallery with the excellent Coppermine Photo Gallery.

Have also installed the same theme (K2) on Wordpress & CPG, so it all fits together.

Still some niggles to sort out, though.

I like the nice bright look - but agree about the image next to the news - the link placeholders overlapping into it looks a bit messy :)

why not make your text links, instead of saying more all the time?

the image of the news is fine, but I would try to make the site a wee bit smaller, I have a 17" monitor and it does not all fit nicely

I like the bright style, as a non-coder I found it quite easy to read and inviting. A couple of niggles. One that has been mentioned before - on a 17" screen at 1024x768 the page is fractionally too wide which gives you a scroll bar at the bottom. Those things *really* bug me.
Also it looks a bit untidy in Firefox, the green 'more' things overlap onto the news picture for random distances. I'd agree that making the actual text into links would be far neater.

My new site is http://www.britishclubdivers.co.uk

It's a bit bare at the moment but I hope people will use it to make new friends for diving as you should always dive with a buddy.

It's cool, though I have a 19" Widescreen running at 1440x900 so it looks a bit odd with the far right third of the screen completely blank, also the course listings etc looks a bit too busy on the main page? Just an opinion that last one though!

I don't care what you think ;) Google loves it. Reckon it's on for doubling traffic in the organic searches alone. Msn and Yahoo love it as well we have gone from 13-20 on Google to 1-3 on most searchs and on msn and yahoo Its number one on loads. Really chuffed about it.

Anyone know why Google gives out positions in 2's sometimes ie 1+2, 3+4?

I think i'd rather have 3-4 than 1 by itself. Draws your eyes to it and make sit more important. (Example of 1-2)
