Guess it is an improvement that ntl wish to communicate this info to its customers, rather than just leaving them completely in the dark.

Its not afirmware update but a change of config file. They are 2 different things. Also 100's and 120's won't be done yet

That just wouldn't be workable....

Imagine you want to download the latest Linux distro and you want it quick "hello customer services I'd like to go onto the 10Mb service please" download the files and "hello customer services I'd like to go onto the 1Mb service please" Kids on school holidays "hello I'd like to go onto the 4Mb service please" and so on.

Unworkable in my opinion.

:welcome: dsemuk and to be honest the monthly limit on speed changes apart from everyone phoning CS to download the latest movie for an hour and then going back down to 2/4MBit it's probably to do with the billing systems as well.

Hello!! and yes I see what you mean. I was thinking more along the lines of switching tiers online though. Maybe not once a day, but say, a while ago I switched down speeds and regretted it so wanted to switch back straightaway.

Incidentally, why can you switch up on the site but not down?

that would be NTL and their 'odd ways', probably because someone high up the chain thought that might encurage people to to easly downgrade and cost them money.

probably not mpeg2 HD or AVC HD streaming, but i wonder if they might do SD mpeg2 or SD AVC rather than some sub-standard 640x480 or less, we might need some more bandwidth if they did become really inovative and try streaming HD AVC to your high spec PC.

Are swansea and the other 2 areas better networks then other areas? if yes, would they roll it out there and if no problems assume other areas will be fine and then do a rollout on faster scale, since I cant imagine ntl doing only 3 areas a week.

I come from Belfast and am excited to hear about the 2mb to 4mb happening here first, but what time during the day would these updates normally be expected? the stroke of midnight, before breakfast, midday?

I wouldn't want to be foolishly reseting my modem just for an update that may not have been sent.

I believe NTL will reset your modem when the new config file is available so you don't have to do it yourself. When the modem reboots it will pickup the new config file and give you 4mb.

I assume ntl will auto reboot your modem, and I would think the most likely time of day for the upgrade to happen is early morning between midnight and 8am, not this week of course unless you in one of the 3 areas ntl announced.

If I was still on ntl and had no upgrade next tues morning I would try rebooting my modem possibly every 2 or 3 days following that date at 9am.

Hi all

Configuration files for the migration to 4Mb from 2Mb were deployed last night in Cardiff, Swansea and Belfast, however you will need to reboot your cable modem to get the increased speed.

I assume that all of this up-grading will also apply to the set top box users as well. I also assume that the new silver SAMSUNG boxes will manage this but that some of my clients using the PACE boxes which could not manage 2mb will certainly not see 4mb. Will NTL now be replacing all of those before the end of June?

I can confirm it's been upgraded in Belfast.

I downloaded the Halo demo from the Microsoft.com site (since they can pay for the high speed servers) and was getting around 450kbs but seemed to slowly creep into the 460kb range.

I was wondering.......

if NTL "need to upgrade the configuration files of ntlHome 100 & ntlHome 120 modems, which we plan to do in the near future."

When will this be?
Will the upgrade to these configuration files be done before the end of june?
Will all people on the 2Mb speed be upgraded to the 4Mb speed regardless of modem?

just to find out as I have one of the NTLHome 120 modems

The problem with both BT and NTL at current I believe they are contending at way higher then 20:1 probably nearer 50:1 to allow them to sell broadband agressivley and in addition in NTLs case they are not sharing 4x users burst instead its 2.7 in some areas which only have 27mbit. I think if a user is getting sub 2meg speeds on a 10meg burstable line they have every right to complain, they should of course verify it isnt the source server first tho by checking from multiple locations. Also I wish people would stop spreading the impression that NTL are carefully making sure people get full speeds etc. first, this isnt true as many people found out in the last few upgrades, why would ntl suddenly change their policy now? Dont be at all surprised if you go from a solid 2mbit connection to a variable 4mbit connection. Also 10 meggers dont be surprised that once these upgrades are complete you suffer slower speeds.

i remember seeing 50:1 some where i will look around on there site.

I have a 120 modem, and so do a hell of a lot of other NTL broadband subscribers. The 120s were a pain in the backside to upgrade to 10mb, so it's obvious that NTL will check that the 4mb config file works flawlessly  before deploying it to such a huge user base. Have patience, it will come.

yeah just like they tested it before on the 10meg (003 firmware) then it took 2 weeks of us complaining to them that it borked the NTL120 modems and then saying no its fine before someone with half a brain said yes its the firmware and rolled it back to 002.

strange why Brighton is so late on the rollout list if CS is correct in saying the 22nd, usually its one of the 1st area's. Anyway i'm not bothered this time, 2meg unlimited suits me, i'll wait for 4meg unlimited when it gets to me and if it borks the 120's again like the 10meg upgrade then i'd rather it had a accident this time and get a new modem, after all i'm only renting it -if its not fit for the purpose and they wish for me to continue paying for their service they will soon swap it over asap

thats interesting, obvously its not right, and they may have been playing around with their kit, but that 23.95 Mbps implys that the modem and the ubr can do around 25.Mbps today, i assume you have an ntl 250.

i wonder what the max real upload rate would have been.

A. Yes. We have engineered our local access network to provide a 20:1 contention ratio in comparison to a number of ADSL providers who have contention ratios as high as 50:1. The "contention ratio" is the number of customers that share one unit of data capacity, meaning the lower the contention ratio the higher the quality of the local access network."

Bullsh**.

Although it does have the claim:

Quote:

Q. Where there's a choice between ntl Broadband and ADSL how many take your service?
A. A. We estimate approximately 3 out of 4 customers chose ntl Broadband over ADSL, where ntl is available.
To keep it company, although that could easily be spun to be claiming that 3 out of 4 customers who already have ntl choose their broadband over ADSL.

Cable covers a bit under 50% of population so if it's outselling DSL 3:1 in its' own areas
it should have about 60% of the total connections DSL has (3:1 + 0:4 = 3:5 = 60%). Considering that ADSL is used by over 8 million people cable should in that case have 4.8 million broadband users. I'm fairly sure it doesn't, I find 2:2 + 0:4 = 2:6 = 33% or about 2.66 million to 8 million far more realistic considering the just under 50% where coverage of both overlaps.

Each card gives 27 or 38Mbit in Langley areas. 200 4Mbit customers will break the 20:1 on a 38Mbit card, that doesn't include the 1Mbit or 10Mbit users.

They will contend as high as they can like everyone else. Anyway slightly offtopic - contention shouldn't matter a jot so long as performance is alright.

I just dont believe the speed increase of the top tier from 3 to 10meg and the new increase of the middle tier from 2 to 4meg have been matched by equal amounts of extra kit in the UBRs.

They would most likely try and charge you, it depends who you get on the other end of the phone and the engineer who is there on the day to replace it. I guess you could claim it keeps turning itself off randomly and you're not quite sure why.

Other people on the board know alot more about these things though, best off waiting til one of them reads this and offers a better alternative.

The Terayons and CMXes are the oldest, however they are 'quality' modems despite their age while the ntl 100 + 120 were built as cheaply as possible.

I don't see why there should be a problem with the 120 modem as i have that one & mine worked fine on the 10mb speed never had a problem & 95% of the time i could get max speed

is there anything offical on this, do this mean us poor 100 or 120 owners have to wait even longer then, lol - blooming typical that is if so, whats the odds it'll still be borked

Well that sucks about the 100 and 120's :dozey:.

I assume most of the older customers have 100 or 120's if they havn't already been upgraded?

Yes, but they worked for the job fine at the time? Its got to be cheaper to churn out cruddy modems that just do the job than trying to future proof for speeds or tech that may never be taken advantage of / by the customer.

Which has what to do with my statement that the CMX and Terayon are fine for 4Mbit despite their age as they were built to a higher quality than the 100 /120 modems which were built for as low a cost as possible?

bilal 06-06-2006 18:03

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

i have the ntl 120 and always get full speed on 2mbit. I also know someone who has 10mbit with an ntl 120 modem and they get full speed on that.

So ntl 120 modems arent bad, they just need to do some additional testing on them as turbulentone said and as long as they get that testing done by the end of June and i get my 4mbit upgrade i won't mind...

Nope! Sadly not.
Although after the technical problem at the weekend I don't know if the upgrade at Nottingham is the one which will update my service as the technical problem there is the one which was to blame for my own problem on Sunday (although thats according to India who won't know where neither Grimsby nor Nottingham is!).

Its got to do with your statement of saying the 100 and 120 are so cheap that they are not fit for the job.

I made no warranty or otherwise of their fitness for any purpose, I just said that they were built as cheaply as possible and that the Terayon and CMX are of a higher quality, as you'd expect considering the Terayon retailed at £170.

Your need to points score with me is getting a bit weird, you seem to feel the need to comment or try and correct me at every possible occasion, which is a bit freaky. If you really want to prove your leetness with cable get a job with a cable company or contractor and get paid for it.

Finding holes in what a relative beginner like me says about the stuff doesn't really impress.

Yes - that was it - and will we have to re-boot and what will happen to the PACE box users that couldn't even be up-graded to 2mb?

Mick 06-06-2006 22:58

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

Pace STB users still on the 1Mb but paying £24.99, should of been sent a letter some time ago inviting them to arrange a STB swap out so they can surf at 2Mb.

Re: 2Mb STB users waiting to go to 4Mb, no information has been officially confirmed to us on this. But if it helps I will contact ntl tomorrow and seek some form of clarification on this matter. I will get back to you on this as and when I get a response back. :)
