Awwwesome.

I rang back NTL and said that I was talking to a representitive earlier who was upgrading me to the 10Mb service but I got cut off and could we do it now please?

'Yes no problem,' came the reply and within seconds my modem was upgraded to take 10Mb - checked yours out here:

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I had a billing complaint about NTL Digital and rang CS.
whilst he was resolving that issue he mentioned that I was on the 3mb BB, and that will be going to 10mb in December.
Whilst he was typing away and sorting my bill out. I said, "so this 10mb, is it official then? I only heard rumours about it some time ago"
He said, "Yes, I can put it on for you now if you like"

I said "Yes please"
of course :)

Haven't tested fully, as he's only just flicked the switch (or whatever it is they do)

Called CS today and asked about upgrading my broadband to 10mb very polite and helpfull lady said that "It has not been launched yet and that it's due to be launched just before christmas, try calling back in december"

How can it not be launched when many people are receiving it already? including people in my area and across the country?

I am quite happy to wait until it is launched but I think that NTL could have planned this a little bit better?

It's not really a case of planning, but poor internal communication. Something they are still not good at.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Read my previous 3 posts on the last page. I had the same problems - ring back and say you were in the process of being upgraded by someone when you got cut off and you'd like to complete the step now.

When you call ntl you have to enter your phone number - if this does actually direct you to different call centres that could be where the problem lies. If you enter an incorrect phone number (just mash the key pad a few times) it will say - number not recognised - enter area code - try nottingham - 01159 - I did and then i finally got through to someone who could help me.

people are saying internal comunication is a problem in NTL
but this 10mb thing started on the 8th and its the 21st now
how long does info needs to take to go through NTL call centers??

These contacts the Cableforum staff have at the executive level at NTL; surely they can be informed of how utterly useless their organisation is? It's not even difficult to cure, all they'd need to do is have a couple of staff who get told what's what and then have that mailed to every member of staff to make sure everyone's singing off the same hymn sheet. The way they talk about it on the phone is hardly reassuring - "I've heard…" suggests that everyone's sitting around in the canteen trying to figure out amongst themselves what's what. The four calls I've made about this so far have given me answers ranging from "It's still in trial… probably in January" to "It's going to be available in late 2006".

Unless NTL emails everyone randomly generated information for a laugh, how can they be so uninformed?

Yes but you are more informed than CS people because of the contacts the Cableforum staff have at NTL.

I'd say about 90% of NTL broadband customers don't know about the upgrade to 10Mb.

See?

Just to add, the firmware upgrade is not something you want to do manually, ntl have the correct image and they can transplant it via the network. I believe this is what happens when they upgrade you, this process appears to be something you have to initiate by calling CS on 0800 052 2000 then option 5 and asking to be upgraded.
Once 'upgraded' reboot the modem by logging onto http://192.168.100.1 and reboot (don't reset to factory defaults). Then speedtest.....voila! with luck

hey guys, im at my witts end here, got upgraded to 10mb like alot of you last week, wednesday to be excact. I have a ntl120 modem which has had the firmware updated. As ive previously posted ive been onto cs about my modem reseting when i download more than 4 files at a time or exceed 40k upload. This doesnt stop and i end up having to stop doing what im doing.
Now ive phoned ntl almost everyday since the upgrade about this, they said theyve altered settings an its fixed, but it wasnt, then they tell me to turn off my modem an unplug all the leads wait 10mins then plug it in again and that this would normaly fix my problem, which surprise surprise it didnt. They refuse point blank to send out an engineer or to replace the ntl120 modem.
so could someone tell me what im suppose to do now?, im payin the highest price for a service that is not usable.

latest speed test.....
Tue, 22 Nov 2005 05:23:21 UTC

3rd 512K took 2203 ms = 237988 KB/sec, approx 1961 Kbps, 1.92 Mbps
4th 512K took 1282 ms = 408961 KB/sec, approx 3272 Kbps, 3.2 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1689 Kbps, 1.65 Mbps
and it reset the modem 4 times during this.

Maybe its time to make am oppointment with a solicitor and take ntl to court. bad service, bad support but perfect billing. I AINT HAVIN IT!

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Just to reassure people, it IS worth perservering to get the 10Mbit upgrade! The first person I spoke to in CS told me I would have it 'by end 2006'!!! The second try yielded the answer that 'new customers can have it now, but existing ones will get it mid-Dec, this is due to a problem with our systems'.

The third person told me the same, but escalated to his supervisor when I complained that I was being penalised for signing up earlier, which I did on the promise I'd be 'at the front of the queue for 10Mbit'. He also told me his system did not allow upgrade to 10Mbit. Miraculously(!), after he came back, he suddenly 'mended' his system, and before the end of the call my NTL 250 modem had rebooted itself and I was connected at 10Mbit!

Moral of the story - just keep calling back, use option 2 or 5, and eventually someone will help you!!

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Similar story, just keep trying, on my 3 attempt - this time stating a how a friend of mine is a new customer and got offered the new service at 10mb but as an existing customer I am still on 3mb. They explained about how new customers get newer modems that work and NTL will be solving the older modem issues. I said I wanted it anyhow. (I think the issue may be related to duplex -- half of 10mb which is about 5mb). So I have now been upgraded and he didnt even need to talk to a supervisor.

Will be awaiting to see if my speed does in deed increase.

It will increase, but it may not go all the way up to 10Mb as yet. They have started updating modem firmware, but I suspect if your modem is really old and actually has to be swapped for a new one, you may have a little time to wait yet.

Even so, you ought to get about 5Mb if not the full 10. And yes, duplexing (or lack of) is the issue.

My modem is a Terayon TJ 210. - Its old now. Its meant to be capable of about 7mbits rather than 10. But most people are saying anywhere from 5mb to 7mb on the 10mb service. Basically will need a modem upgrade.

Been having exactly the same problem with an ntl100. Had an engineer out today who tested the line in the house. He then went outside and tested the line coming into the house. When he came back in he said that a couple of connections were a bit loose, probably due to traffic vibrations, and he's nipped them up. Said he was 99% sure that would fix the problem but if it didn't to ring tech support again. Just tested it and as you said as soon as the upload went over 40k it rebooted. Looks like I'll be on the phone to tech support again tomorrow as the account is in my wifes name and she needs to be here when I ring :(

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

well, still only getting 3mb so I thought I would call NTL Broadband support, the following is what I was told...

"Its only in test, you will have to wait until january."

so to recap.

On normal support line (0800) after 3 attempts I was told I am now on 10mb.
On Broadband suppoirt line (0845) I am told not until January.

Wow thats very interesting. I suppose I am being given the fob off.

I will wait and see any responses on this from this forum.

I'm in reading. Is anyone else in reading on 10mb - more than 3mb working that is?

fahys71 22-11-2005 12:14

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I couldnt wait, so impatient, well, I had been promised it. Plus off today so best day to get in contact and get things sorted.

Well, I called back the first number (0800) and explained what had happened, they said its probably due to my modem. Can you recheck, I asked. He said ok, then said, oh you are only on 3mb, I will now upgrade you, but you may not get full 10mb and it can fluctuate.

Well my lights flickered and now...

Tue, 22 Nov 2005 13:10:40 UTC

1st 512K took 703 ms = 745787 KB/sec, approx 6145 Kbps, 6 Mbps
2nd 512K took 656 ms = 799220 KB/sec, approx 6586 Kbps, 6.43 Mbps
3rd 512K took 657 ms = 798003 KB/sec, approx 6576 Kbps, 6.42 Mbps
4th 512K took 672 ms = 780190 KB/sec, approx 6242 Kbps, 6.1 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 6387 Kbps, 6.24 Mbps

So my modem is the problem as I already knew for full 10mb, but they obviously did nothing before.

So call back until you see at least an slight (or major) improvement to throughput (bandwidth).

Thanks to all. Just keep on trying.

Next will be to get my modem upgraded..... will give them a few days or I will fill up there voice recording system!!! I am now a happy customer.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I foolishly thought that if I phoned up CS option 5 instead of option 2 this time I might have been in with a chance of being upgraded, so I dialled the number waited patiently and spoke to a very polite man, I expalined that i'd like to be upgraded from 3mb as I new a few people who had already been upgraded, he asked me to wait and the phone went quiet, when he came back he said that "due to problems with the upgrade and he aknowledged that people had already been upgraded and due to the problems these people were having NTL had stopped upgrading further accounts until these problems had been fixed, and that would be wait for it sometime in December!!!!

Well I'm not going to bother phoning again and will wait for the contact that NTL said I would receive from them when the upgrade is ready to start again!!!!

3rd 512K took 1124 ms = 466448 KB/sec, approx 3844 Kbps, 3.75 Mbps
4th 512K took 172 ms = 3048186 KB/sec, approx 24385 Kbps, 23.81 Mbps

I have to agree that it depends who you speak to in CS as to whether you go on the 10mb trial or not.
The chap I spoke to explained that their was no problem with going on the trial, as long as i understood that the speed would fluctuate between 3-10 MB until the official upgrade in mid December.
I have to say I am pleasantly surprised at the ease at which i was transfered and the polite and officiant ntl staff member I spoke to.

Leanne, a nice scottish bird at CS said she can upgrade me to anything upto 10mb. She said it would happen within the hour. Modem just rebooted but i'm still on shoddy speeds.

Where exactly do you check your firmware version cos i can't seem to find it?

Edit: I seem to be downloading at 4mb speeds. Speeds of around 420k/s dropping and rising :(

Edit 2: I've got an Ambit 200 modem.

I've just been told by NTL Broadband support that the Terayon modem can cope with the 10mb connection as it gets a firmware upgrade from the server.

Does anyone know if this is correct. I hope it is.
Currently I'm getting half the connection (about 5mb d/l)

All those people struggling with 4 to 6Mbs download, is your modem connected via USB 1.1? Or is your ethernet connection on half duplex or 10Mbs? The speeds being reported by a few out there seems to suggest that the connectivity problems may be local to their machines.

there are data protection issues if they did that - you're best ringing NTL directly and asking for your username and password.

Hi everyone

I have been reading all these posts and noticed a lot of people can be very impatient, but I also found out when I was 1mb, i could of had 3mb which i lost out on for about 4 months!!! I did not know about the update at all, a simple email would of been nice atleast but ah well. I just wondered if I leave it till the mid december date, would I be automatically updated or I have to do it myself on the tier upgrade page, at the moment it says I can't have a upgrade, im 3mb so maybe its just my area (warrington). I have the ambit 200 modem (the silver one) and have seen that this is capable for 10mb connection. Could anybody enlighten me on whether or not it will just update or ill be waitin till im 90 for the upgrade like. :p:

You will probably be contacted by email etc closer to the date that they are due to upgrade the lower tiers. You should get the upgrade automatically but keep an eye open for more info on this forum so you know roughly when you should be receiving it.

Leave your modem for an hour and then reboot it. I asked where do I go when this doen't work? she said I don't know, you will have to ring back and we'll take it from there. So at 11.55 I'll be rebooting it and by 12.05 will probably be back on the phone to them. This is really starting to p*ss me off now.

following my plea for help on this forum i received a phone call from ntl, they sent out an engineer. He looked at my modem and asked what was happening, when i told him that it was disconnecting when up stream was used he simply pulled out the modem an replaced it with a nice shinney new blue ntl250 modem:D . He implied that ntl will be replacing all there modems with ntl250s in the near future.
Ive not disconnected once since getting the new modem an have full dl speeds. so from where i sit it definently is the modems.
Thx to all who gave advice an help. :)

I agree it is the modems but was told today otherwise. Was told the 100 and above were more than capable and they would only be replacing older or faulty modems :( Will wait to see if this "firmware" upgrade has cured it

HALF PRICE FOR 6 MONTHS !!

I just phoned for the 10mb upgrade and was told that due to modem problems CS are no longer able to do this and I would have to wait until automattically done in December. I complained, aske dfor supervisor then asked for disconnections.

At this pint I was told I could go through to diconnections OR I could have 3MB service for 6 months at half price £17.99 !! Also I would still get the speed upgrade in December !!

This is even better than having the 10MB service as I only have a 120 modem anyway. WOO HOO

Il still take the £114 thanks and wait a couple of weeks :D

My point was though that anyone could probably get this even if you have the upgrade. Just call to disconnect (say switching to adsl or something) and you will probably be offered it.

I'm having major problems with my NTL 120 modem. I get the full 10 meg fine, but I'm currently trying to download a patch for the test realm on World of Warcraft, it uses a bit torrent downloader and every few mins it reboots my modem. I'm not sure if it's because of the amount of connections or if it's a similar problem to a previous poster and it's because of it maxing upload.

What should I do, can someone here with NTL contacts help me get my modem switched to a 250?

The lady on the other end said yes its up and running in your area and you could get on the trial. After all the chat about its only a trial and you might not get full speed blaa blaa blaa. she said right now thats done with all you goto do is reboot the modem and youll be on the 10 meg.
Why Why Why do thay have to lie to me ive rebooted once no joy again no joy left it off for 8 hours while i was at work no joy. thats is one of the worst offeces in my book for CS staff :nono: and thats to lie lie and lie again.

they might aswel start letting us poor sods on 2mb upgrade to 10mb then with the ol 30gig cap. I'd be happy with 8mb and a 30gig cap tbh but we should be offered something its not hard to send out these modem config files. Its a blatent marketing scheme to get people to upgrade to the 37.99 package on NTL's part, which is kinda fair, but doesnt do them much in gaining loyalty and respect from there customer base.

What number did you call to speak to them? I called them lastnight (twice) and spoke to some woman, she said she would "add it to my account so that when its released I can get it" -- Im based in Reading, Berkshire and still dont have anything?

Would be nice to know the number and possibly a name of someone you spoke to, did you call them in the day?

Maybe its just not in Reading yet...

I've got the same modem and had problems with it rebooting. Had an engineer round and rang tech support 3 times about it. The last time I rang, yesterday, they said they have updated the firmware on it and it should be ok now. Touch wood it's not rebooted once since then. Ok quick update on my last post it seams that 2 things wrong my account was diactivated in september 2004 yet i was still being billed and my service never stopped all thats sorted now.
i asked him for a refound then from september to now. he laughed and said no. it was just a clitch and its been sorted now.
also the TS guy found out my modems mac address had been cloned upto 4 times 1 showing as offline and 3 online modems where reported to him. (beware of the demon modems ) so he quicly arranged for a techniction to come out and replace my modem tomorow so all being well as soon as this modem is killed and the new one fitted all my troubles will be sorted. :nworthy: :nworthy: :nworthy:

Dont think so i made 4 calls 1 to CS and that prompted the first post. the second to CS thay said it was done wrong in the fisrt place. 3rd was to CS and got pased from CS to TS then back to CS then was told to dial with option 3 for TS 4th call and the tech guy found all that i posted above because he said 1 of the modems with my mac addy had been put on 10meg. but it wasnt mine :Yikes: . total time on the phone for call 4 was nearly 75 mins.

To be honest im a little sick of NTL and their lack of knowledge of their products. I am already considering leaving their television services and the last thing they need is to mess me about with my internet! The lady on the phone just pointed out to me that people who have been upgraded are not actually receiving the 10mb service but are still on 3MB. umm, i dont think so lady, im not stupid!! Why are NTL employees telling blatant lies to me over the phone. Its not a clever tactic of them to lie to their customers with such fierce competition from others ISP's. I will be leaving NTL in the near future for another ISP, based purely on the fact NTL have lied to me. I dont care if my new isp has the same attrocious customer service, as long as my hard earned cash does not go to NTL. :td:

I have exactly the same problem, on a surfboard 3100. I don't believe it is due to more traffic, as it was working perfectly at 3Mb before and happened the instant after I was upgraded.

I've tried tech support who just got me to try a load of things (I know it's not my PC, IT support myself, but I humored them and did all they asked). I know the problem, it's the modem, but I can't get them to change it. Fed up of calling, going through the same stuff. I'm now waiting until the middle of December when it goes 'live' and try again, if NTL don't contact me first about my modem (yeah right! :) ).

There are a lot of staff that work at NTL and you have only spoken to 1 or 2 of them. Yes there are a few staff members that don't seem to know they're ar$e from their elbows, but generally speaking most of them are pretty clued up, myself included.

It is mostly the fact that the 10Mb is not officially rolled out that many CS staff do not know about it or even some of the details, its usually just before official release that staff are informed of the new service and features.

you only know more than them thanks to the very helpful people on this forum, some of us are employees of NTL and do go the extra mile by offering help on here when they really don't have to. So you have been unfortunate when you have spoken to a member of CS that wasn't fully clued up on the 10MB, but she never lied to you!

After a cooling of period i realise what i said was a bit on the harsh side, and all things aside the lady on the other end of the phone was polite in dealing with my enquiry. It is just frustrating to be told something when you know its not correct. I understand that NTL employees can not always be the first to know whats going on, in fact if my experiences in previous jobs are anything to go by they are likely the last to know. Still, the case of people being upgraded depending, supposedly, on who they speak to is a little annoying. Again i appologise for my hasty remarks. :disturbd:

I've tried tech support who just got me to try a load of things (I know it's not my PC, IT support myself, but I humored them and did all they asked). I know the problem, it's the modem, but I can't get them to change it. Fed up of calling, going through the same stuff. I'm now waiting until the middle of December when it goes 'live' and try again, if NTL don't contact me first about my modem (yeah right! :) ).

Yeah, I have rebooted my cable modem lots and lots of times, I tried to call them yesterday and some women just spoke over me and told me that it was because its a "pilot scheme" -- I tried to explain that I appreciate that and understand that, but why am I only going at 1mb now? -- she just told me its because its a pilot scheme and sometimes I will gete 10mb and other times I will maybe get 3mb (even tho I tried to explain that I am 3 times slower than normal!) -- Ive not pushed over 100k/sec since I upgraded, so I think I will give up on this one, I am going to call Customer services and ask them to downgrade meback to 3mb or maybe 2mb. Oh well :-( I tried :-(

have you checked your modem config screen which will either indicate to you that you're on a 1meg tier, 2meg, 3meg or 10meg?

Yep, and it say's 10mb -- downloads max out around 90k/sec -- currently on the phone to NTL technical support who are looking into it ... been on the phone for 53 minutes and 34 seconds and I tested the new UK drinking laws lastnight so at the moment I feel like shooting myself.

I know it is maxxed out as we are peered with NTL at work, and if my mate logs into his 3mb cable modem he is getting like 340k/sec....

Im hoping they just need to flash my NTLhome 200 or something?

You have to click on "operation configuration" to see your download & upload speeds. They are called "Maximum Downstream Data Rate" & "Maximum Upstream Data Rate".
